Chargers | Byrd released Mon Mar 22, 06:48 PM
The San Diego Chargers have announced they have released WR Demetrius Byrd.
Footballguys view: A seventh-round pick in 2009, Byrd was involved in a serious car accident before the draft. Before the accident which left him in critical condition Byrd was thought of as a mid-round prospect with good upside. Another team could be interested in bringing in Byrd to compete for a roster spot. |

Chargers | Will take time on signing Byrd Mon Jul 27, 04:32 PM
Kevin Acee, of the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports the San Diego Chargers will take their time signing seventh-round draft choice WR Demetrius Byrd (shoulder, ear) because they want to monitor his recovery from the car accident.
Footballguys view: Byrd has good initial quickness off the snap and does a good job of beating press coverage at the line of scrimmage. He has legitimate deep speed and is elusive after the catch. Byrd had a disappointing senior season at LSU, and was injured in a car accident less than a week before the NFL draft. He may have to develop on the practice squad in his rookie season but he could one day emerge as a nice complementary receiver for the Chargers. |

Chargers | Byrd motivated to contribute Tue May 5, 12:36 PM
Casey Pearce, of Chargers.com, reports San Diego Chargers WR Demetrius Byrd, chosen in the seventh round of the NFL Draft, continues to recover from the automobile accident that landed him in the hospital two weeks ago and is motivated to eventually contribute to the team. 'Now that I have survived an accident and was drafted by the Chargers, I have so much motivation to play with this team,' Byrd recently said through his agent David Dunn. 'I appreciate the Chargers for recognizing my hard work and helping me live out this dream. I promise you that I will work hard every day on and off the field.'
Footballguys view: Before the start of the 2008 college football season many considered Byrd to be a 1st day pick. As the QBs for LSU struggled, so did the entire passing game and Byrd's draft stock went on the decline. The Chargers picked him up in the 7th round despite the fact he was in a serious car accident the week before the draft. Byrd has been released from the hospital and if he regains his form the Chargers could have a late round steal on their hands. |

Casey Pearce, of Chargers.com, reports San Diego Chargers WR Demetrius Byrd (shoulder, ear) was recently released from the hospital and says he is feeling much better. Byrd's injuries were not life threatening, and he is expected to make a full recovery. He was unable to attend the team's recent minicamp.
Footballguys view: This is good news, we're wishing Demetrius a speedy recovery. |
NFL | Byrd expected to make full recovery Mon Apr 20, 05:58 PM
Updating previous reports, The Associated Press reports David Dunn, agent for Louisiana State WR Demetrius Byrd (shoulder, ear), said Byrd is expected to make a full recovery from his car accident.
Footballguys view: This is great news for the young draft prospect. It's unfortunate that the timing of this accident is likely to affect his draft stock. Byrd is currently seen as a mid-late round pick, but now may go undrafted. |
