Bears | Chicago signs pair of free agents    Fri Jun 18, 12:22 PM

Free agent TE Jake Butt (Broncos) and rookie free agent OT Tyrone Wheatley Jr. on Friday, June 18, signed with the Chicago Bears.

Footballguys view: Butt was a promising prospect but never seemed to be the same after an ACL tear the year before the Broncos drafted him in the fifth round. Wheatley was once a highly recruited tight end prospect who landed at Michigan, the same school his dad excelled for before a ten-year career with the Giants and Raiders.

Bears | Five players trying out    Tue Jun 15, 08:39 PM

Free-agent CB E.J. Gaines (Bills), TE Jake Butt (Broncos) and DT Mike Pennel (Chiefs) are participating in the Chicago Bears minicamp this week on a tryout basis. Undrafted free-agent TE Sal Cannella (Auburn) and OT Tyrone Wheatley Jr. (Stony Brook) are also trying out for the team.

Footballguys view: Butt was a talented tight end coming out of Michigan years ago but injuries have held him back as a pro. If healthy, Butt can give you plenty of value as a "Y" tight end and reserve player for the Bears. We'll see if he can make the team after this tryout.

Cardinals | Jake Butt works out for Arizona    Tue Jun 8, 06:28 PM

Free-agent TE Jake Butt (Broncos) worked out for the Arizona Cardinals Tuesday, June 8.

Footballguys view: Butt is a good "Y" tight end who can work as a blocker or receiver. He struggled to impress with the Broncos because he was constantly banged up. Talent is not an issue with Butt, but staying healthy is. We should see him latch on somewhere for another chance.

Broncos | Several TEs may compete for two spots    Sun May 31, 03:46 PM

Denver Broncos TEs Albert Okwuegbunam, Austin Fort and Jake Butt are expected to be competing for two roster spots during training camp. Okwuegbunam is considered a favorite for one of the spots.

Footballguys view: Okwuegbunam was a favorite target of Drew Lock during their playing days together in college at Mizzou. He caught 17 touchdown passes from Lock in two seasons and could be a red-zone threat for the Broncos in 2020 and beyond. Fort looked good in training camp last year as an undrafted rookie out of Wyoming. A knee injury forced him to miss all of 2019. Speaking of knee injuries, Jake Butt just can't stay healthy due to a few knee issues that have plagued his game in college and the pros.

Broncos | Jake Butt healthy, ready to perform    Sat May 30, 03:03 PM

Denver Broncos TE Jake Butt (knee) said Friday, May 29, he is doing well after missing the entire 2019 campaign following knee surgery and has been working out on his own. He also said he's ready to prove the team right for waiting on him after playing just three games since being drafted in 2017. 'It's not a guarantee - they're not telling me I'm making the team by any stretch or rolling out the red carpet,' Butt said. I still have to go out there and work and earn it. ... But the fact they're standing by me and giving me an opportunity, it obviously means the world to me and I'm going to try and go out there and prove them right and prove myself right.'

Footballguys view: Butt's career has been knocked off track several times by knee injuries, including when he came out of Michigan a few years ago. He has talent but these injuries have been too much to overcome. With Noah Fant, rookie Albert Okwuegbunam and free agent Nick Vannett there's not much room for Butt on the final roster.

Broncos | Three officially on IR    Mon Sep 2, 04:18 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock (thumb), RB Theo Riddick (shoulder) and TE Jake Butt (knee) were officially placed on the Reserve/Injured list Monday, Sept. 2.

Footballguys view: Lock is the 2019 second-round pick who could be the future franchise quarterback of the Broncos. Riddick could be the team's leading pass-catching back when healthy. Butt has only played in three games during his two seasons with the Broncos and is still dealing with the knee injury that cost him most of the 2018 season.

Broncos | Jake Butt needs surgery    Wed Aug 28, 11:51 AM

Denver Broncos TE Jake Butt (knee) will undergo a minor procedure after experiencing soreness in his left knee.

Footballguys view: It's a minor surgery but yet another surgery on his knees. Butt has played in only three games over the last two years for the Broncos. He's a talented player but he's had three major knee surgeries over his football career and this minor procedure makes it four times his knees have been operated on. Butt seems bound for Injured Reserve.

Broncos | Jake Butt knows he has to prove himself    Tue Aug 6, 02:40 AM

Denver Broncos TE Jake Butt (knee) said Monday, Aug. 5, that he appreciates the team's patience, but he knows he has to prove himself. 'I still have to go out there and prove it,' Butt said. 'I can't just sit in the trainer's room all day. I'm not naive. I know how the business works, but it does mean a lot that the coaches still believe in me.'

Footballguys view: Butt has a ton of talent but he's also had three major knee injuries during his football career dating back to high school. He's only played in three games as a pro and has missed most of training camp this year due to knee soreness. Butt needs to get healthy and stay healthy if he wants to make the 53-man roster. Right now, he's on the outside looking in.

Denver Broncos TE Jake Butt (knee) did not participate in practice Monday, July 22. The team hopes he will be able to practice Wednesday, July 24, after three days of rest.

Footballguys view: Butt has talent but he is oft-injured and is coming back from the third knee injury of his football career dating back to high school. The Broncos have 2019 first-round pick Noah Fant and second-year pro Troy Fumagalli competing for the top pass-catching target at tight end. Butt, when healthy, is just trying to make the final roster.

Broncos | Jake Butt limited Thursday    Thu Jul 18, 08:00 PM

Denver Broncos TE Jake Butt (knee) was limited to seven-on-seven drills during practice Thursday, July 18.

Footballguys view: Butt is facing an uphill battle to make the 53-man roster. He is coming back from the third knee injury of his football career dating back to his days in high school. Butt has talent as a 'Y' tight end but he's only appeared in a few games over the last two years and missed all of his rookie season in 2017. If healthy, Butt could make the Broncos roster as a No. 4 tight end...if they choose to carry four at the position.

Broncos | Denver to take it easy with Jake Butt    Tue Jul 16, 10:37 PM

Denver Broncos TE Jake Butt (knee) was limited to individual drills for most of the offseason as he continued to recover from surgery on his torn anterior cruciate ligament. He believes he will do more 'team things' at start of camp while the team slowly works his reps back to where they were, according to Aric DiLalla of the team's website.

Footballguys view: That's the best plan for Butt. He's had three major knee injuries during his football career, and the Broncos want to make sure they don't rush him back. Butt looked good for a limited time last year before getting hurt. He will work as a reserve tight end behind rookie first-round pick Noah Fant and veteran blocker Jeff Heuerman.

Broncos | Troy Fumagalli could surprise    Fri Jul 12, 02:00 AM

Denver Broncos TE Troy Fumagalli is someone to keep an eye on in camp, in the opinion of The Athletic's Nicki Jhabvala, who also lists him as a possible surprise contributor at a highly competitive tight end position where he and TE Jake Butt might be vying for one roster spot.

Footballguys view: Fumagalli missed his rookie season in 2018 due to a sports hernia. He has vacuum hands and can create mismatches as a receiver. Don't ask him to block, but Fumagalli has talent as a pass catcher. He looked good in minicamp and OTAs during the spring and is competing for a spot in the jam-packed Broncos tight end corps.

Broncos | Jake Butt may be limited early    Thu Jul 11, 06:54 PM

Denver Broncos TE Jake Butt (knee) likely will be able to participated in some team drills at the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Butt has been limited this offseason. He's coming back from the third knee injury of his football career. Butt has looked good in limited action this offseason but clearly is an injury risk. If healthy, he should be in the mix behind Jeff Heuerman and rookie Noah Fant.

Broncos | Jake Butt on track for camp    Sat Jun 22, 04:10 PM

Denver Broncos TE Jake Butt (knee) said he will be ready for the start of training camp.

Broncos | Jake Butt starting drills    Sun Jun 2, 08:31 PM

Denver Broncos TE Jake Butt (knee) has begun taking part in individual drills during OTAs.

Footballguys view: Butt has worked back from three major knee injuries during his football career. We know he has talent but he's so oft-injured we don't get to see him for long. If healthy, Butt is arguably the best all-around tight end on the Broncos roster. The team did select Noah Fant in the first round of the 2019 NFL draft, so Butt would work into some form of TEBC if healthy.

Broncos | Jake Butt hoping for training camp    Wed May 15, 10:02 PM

Denver Broncos TE Jake Butt (knee) will 'hopefully' be ready to return by the start of training camp, according to head coach Vic Fangio.

Footballguys view: Butt is out there at Broncos OTAs putting in some limited work. He does look good in drills and we'll have to see if he continues along well in his recovery. Butt is a talented 'Y' tight end with all-purpose ability. However, the Broncos selected Noah Fant (Iowa) in the first round of the 2019 NFL draft and he could be the leading receiver at the TE position for Denver this season.

Broncos | Two players will be limited    Sun May 12, 04:31 PM

Denver Broncos TE Jake Butt (knee) and OG Ronald Leary (Achilles) will be limited during organized team activities because of injuries.

Footballguys view: Butt might trouble making the team with Noah Fant now penciled in as the top receiving tight end on the team after Denver spent a first-round pick on him. Jeff Heuerman, Troy Fumagalli, and Temarrick Hemingway will be his main competition for a roster spot. Leary should be eager to get back on the field to benefit from the addition of Mike Munchak as offensive line coach.

Broncos | Jake Butt's days could be numbered    Sat May 4, 02:53 AM

Denver Broncos TE Jake Butt (knee) is unlikely to finish the season with the team, in the opinion of ESPN's Bill Barnwell, who sees TEs Noah Fant and Jeff Heuerman ahead of Butt, blocking his path to playing time.

Footballguys view: We don't think that's the case for Butt...unless he gets hurt again. Butt is a good 'Y' tight end (all purpose) and gives the Broncos valuable depth at the position. Fant, the team's first-round pick in the 2019 NFL draft, should be the lead tight end with Heuerman working as a blocker. That's great if everyone stays healthy, but Heuerman has never played a full 16-game season in four years of playing for the Broncos. It would be wise to keep Butt around.

Broncos | No timetable for Jake Butt    Thu Apr 18, 10:11 PM

Denver Broncos TE Jake Butt (knee) still doesn't have a timetable for when he may be able to return, according to head coach Vic Fangio.

Footballguys view: Butt might not be ready to start the regular season. He's talented as a 'Y' tight end and can be featured as a blocker or receiver. Butt has now injured his knees three times in his football career...it's the reason he fell to the fifth round of the draft a couple of years ago. Don't be surprised if the Broncos take a tight end in the first round of the 2019 NFL draft.

Broncos | Jake Butt taking part in minicamp    Tue Apr 16, 03:21 PM

Denver Broncos TE Jake Butt (knee) is participating in minicamp, according to Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic.

Footballguys view: Butt has had three knee injuries during his college and pro career. He could be the lead tight end for the Broncos if healthy. Butt has a good all-around skill set but has durability question marks. We'll see if he can even be ready for the start of the regular season, let alone the start of training camp. Butt was stretching with the team but did not participate in individual drills on Tuesday.
