Rams | Bulger to remain starting QB    Thu Nov 5, 03:22 PM

The Associated Press reports St. Louis Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo is not expected to replace QB Marc Bulger as the starting quarterback. 'I think Marc has done everything we needed him to do,' Spagnuolo said. 'I've said this before; it's not one position on the side of the ball, it's everybody.'

Rams | Bulger undergoes X-rays following Week 7    Mon Oct 26, 10:20 AM

Jim Thomas, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Rams QB Marc Bulger (hand) had X-rays on his left, non-throwing hand following Week 7, but said it was for precautionary reasons only.

Our view: Bulger gives the Rams their best chance to win, even if it's only a slim one.

Rams | Bulger struggles Week 7    Sun Oct 25, 05:52 PM

The Associated Press reports St. Louis Rams QB Marc Bulger was 14-for-26 for 140 yards with two interceptions Week 7 against the Indianapolis Colts.

Our view: The Colts have one the elite pass defenses in the NFL, and the Rams passing no match for them.

Rams | Bulger not listed on injury report for Week 6    Fri Oct 16, 08:40 PM

St. Louis Rams QB Marc Bulger (shoulder) was not listed on the team's injury report for Week 6. He was throwing well by the end of the week.

Rams | Bulger took all the snaps Wednesday    Thu Oct 15, 11:49 AM

Bill Coats, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Rams QB Marc Bulger (shoulder) took all the snaps with the first-team offense during practice Wednesday, Oct. 14.

Our view: Bulger returned last week after Kyle Boller went down with injury and immediately moved the offense down the field for a touchdown. This week in a matchup against the Jags Bulger could have a Hasselbeck-like day. That's why we like players like Donnie Avery and Keenan Burton as "what the heck" flex plays in week 6.

Rams | Bulger will be the starting quarterback    Tue Oct 13, 11:14 AM

Jim Thomas, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Rams QB Marc Bulger (shoulder) will be the team's starting quarterback in Week 6, according to head coach Steve Spagnuolo, assuming Bulger is fit and looks good throwing the ball in practice Wednesday, Oct. 14.

Our view: Bulger was forced into action after Boller went out with a concussion, and he played well. The team wanted to give him one more week of rest, but this early action may prevent him from being rusty in the game this week against Jacksonville.

Rams | Bulger says he should be ready for Week 6    Mon Oct 12, 11:18 AM

Bill Coats, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Rams QB Marc Bulger (shoulder) said he should be ready to play in Week 6, even though he made an appearance in Week 5 following an injury to QB Kyle Boller (head). 'It's getting close,' Bulger said. 'I still need a little more velocity throwing the ball. You never know till you get hit, so we'll see. But ... I think I'll be ready to play the game next week.'

Our view: Bulger came in for a banged up Kyle Boller and led the team to a touchdown on only six plays.

Rams | Boller shaken up Week 5, replaced by Bulger    Sun Oct 11, 05:00 PM

The Associated Press reports St. Louis Rams QB Kyle Boller (undisclosed) left the team's Week 5 game with an undisclosed injury late in the third quarter. Boller finished 20-for-31 for 209 yards with an interception before he was replaced by QB Marc Bulger. Bulger was 7-for-7 for 88 yards with a touchdown pass to finish out the game.

Our view: The Rams had hoped to hold Bulger out at least another week, but he was forced into the game against the strong Minnesota pass rush after Boller's injury. Bulger benefited from a less aggressive Cover-2 than the Vikings usually run, but gives the pass offense a different dimension when healthy.

Rams | Bulger limited Wednesday    Wed Oct 7, 06:49 PM

St. Louis Rams QB Marc Bulger (shoulder) was limited during practice Wednesday, Oct. 7.

Our view: Kyle Boller didn't exactly play like a champion this past week while Marc Bulger was out. As soon as Bulger is healthy we expect him back in the starting lineup.

Rams | Bulger does some throwing Monday    Mon Oct 5, 04:55 PM

The Associated Press reports St. Louis Rams QB Marc Bulger (shoulder) did some light throwing Monday, Oct. 5, to test his bruised rotator cuff. Head coach Steve Spagnuolo said Bulger likely will be questionable for Week 5.

Our view: Kyle Boller didn't remind anyone of Kurt Warner in his first start against the 49ers, and once Bulger is healthy he should get back into the starting lineup.

Bill Coats, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports head coach Steve Spagnuolo said if QB Marc Bulger (shoulder) suits up for Week 4, it will be as the team's No. 3 quarterback.

Our view: Kyle Boller gets his first start with his new team, and will try and move the ball through the air without WR Laurent Robinson. Keenan Burton will start opposite Donnie Avery, but we expect tight end Daniel Fells to be Boller's most trusted target.

Rams | Bulger misses practice Wednesday    Wed Sep 30, 09:01 PM

St. Louis Rams QB Marc Bulger (shoulder) missed the team's practice Wednesday, Sept. 30.

Our view: We assume Kyle Boller will start vs. San Francisco this weekend. Make the appropriate waiver wire moves with that in mind if you are counting on Bulger because your starter is Donovan McNabb, Kurt Warner, or Matt Ryan.

Jim Thomas, of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports the rotator-cuff injury St. Louis Rams QB Marc Bulger (shoulder) suffered is not serious. His status for Week 4 is uncertain.

Our view: Kyle Boller may be a better starting option for the Rams - even if Bulger is healthy. The team is clearly struggling, and could get a spark from a quarterback change.

Rams | Bulger injury update    Mon Sep 28, 12:37 PM

Jim Thomas, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Rams QB Marc Bulger (shoulder) suffered a rotator cuff injury in Week 3 and will have additional tests done Monday, Sept. 28, according to league sources.

Our view: If Bulger has a torn rotator cuff it could end his season. Kyle Boller came in and moved the offense on Sunday, and could be the better starting option for the Rams even if Bulger is healthy.

Rams | Bulger suffered bruised shoulder Week 3    Sun Sep 27, 06:52 PM

The Associated Press reports St. Louis Rams QB Marc Bulger (shoulder) suffered a bruised shoulder during the team's Week 3 game. Head coach Steve Spagnuolo said further evaluation would be needed before he would know if Bulger would miss any time.

Our view: Beat writers and observers were hinting that the injury might keep him out for awhile. With the Rams' wideouts all dinged as well, the Rams' pass offense has a tough road ahead in San Francisco and vs Minnesota over the next two weeks.

Jim Thomas, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Rams QB Marc Bulger (back) finished the team's Week 2 game with a sore back. He needed treatment from the team's medical staff after the game.

Our view: Bulger has actually been very emotional and competitive this year for the Rams, even though the team is 0-2. If they can get to a level of respectability, his attitude will probably play an important role.

Updating a previous report, St. Louis Rams QB Marc Bulger (finger) fully participated in practice Friday, Sept. 11. He is listed as probable for the team's Week 1 game. He threw the ball well during practice and had no problems taking center snaps.

Our view: Several quarterbacks have played with their fingers taped, so this shouldn't change Bulger's throwing motion.

Rams | Team easing Bulger back in    Mon Aug 31, 08:08 PM

Nick Wagoner, of StLouisRams.com, reports that the Rams are being cautious with QB Marc Bulger and his broken pinky on his throwing hand, but that Bulger fully expects to play in the season opener. Bulger has started throwing again, and should increase the amount of throws he takes as the season approaches. "The bone is still fractured," Bulger said. "I think a week from today it will be even more healed. It would just be a shame to go out there and do too much today, take a snap and a re-break or whatever and get set back more. Everything we are doing is just to be safe. We are right on course."

Our view: This doesn't change the Rams offensive outlook so much, but at least it's somewhat encouraging for their performance early in the year.

Rams | Bulger throws 21 passes in side session    Sun Aug 30, 07:18 PM

The Associated Press is reporting QB Marc Bulger took the first step Sunday toward returning to the playing field. Bulger, out since Aug. 17 after fracturing the pinky on his throwing hand, threw 21 passes in a side session at the morning practice. Coach Steve Spagnuolo didn't watch the session, but said offensive coordinator Dick Curl was pleased with the performance.

Our view: If Bulger is not ready for the start of the regular season, the Rams would have to start Kyle Boller at quarterback. We don't think anyone wants to see that scenario, including Steven Jackson owners.

Rams | Barron getting comfortable at left tackle    Tue Aug 18, 07:46 PM

The Associated Press reports that St. Louis OT Alex Barron is getting comfortable at his new position of left tackle. "It's going all right," Barron said of the transition. "I'm just trying to hone in on some techniques and stuff like that. That's the main part of it anyway. Everything's just flipped over. You've still got the same job -- block your man." Head coach Steve Spagnuolo also seems happy with Barron's progress. "I think he's been pretty good," Spagnuolo said. "He's a talented guy so we'll keep going with it. He's a talented offensive tackle."

Our view: Barron will be on the spot because starting QB Marc Bulger is already hurt, and he is one of the more fragile QBs in the league.

St. Louis Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo said QB Marc Bulger (finger) will have to jump back into the lineup when his finger heals and try to pick up where he left off. Bulger said it is an unfortunate injury. When asked if he could play if it were the regular season, he said it would be difficult but he would try to. Bulger left practice briefly, then returned but didn't participate in the drills. Kyle Boller ran the first-team offense.

Jim Thomas, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Rams QB Marc Bulger has been sacked 228 times since the start of the 2003 season, more than any quarterback in the NFL over that span.

Our view: Bulger has the physical build of a librarian, and thus is always an injury risk. Gone are the days of the greatest show on turf, and Bulger is no longer a quarterback that fantasy owners can rely on.

Rams | Bulger still learning the new offense    Wed Aug 5, 05:11 PM

The Associated Press is reporting the switch to the West Coast offense is taking some time to sink in for Marc Bulger. New St. Louis Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo hired Pat Shurmur as offensive coordinator, and Shurmur is going with the West Coast offense. Bulger has had to adjust to numerous coaches and offensive coordinators over his nine years with the Rams. He admits this latest change is taking some getting used to. "I'm still not there yet," Bulger said after practice Tuesday. "I still hear my old coach's voice, coach Martz, you know, with certain plays that are named differently but I just go back to that. I'm getting to the point now where I can get a mental picture in my mind when I hear West Coast terms."

Our view: The Rams want to feature a run-heavy offense in 2009 with RB Steven Jackson set to lead the way. Bulger's current ADP (QB29) reflects the change in offensive philosophy, but it only means Bulger comes at a value price for your backup fantasy quarterback. If he can stay healthy he has a good chance of outperforming his ADP, and even with Torry Holt gone Bulger still has good targets to throw to like Donnie Avery, Keenan Burton, and Randy McMichael. Steven Jackson is a dependable receiver out of the backfield as well.

Rams | Football Outsiders predicts 48% chance of winning season    Sun Jul 12, 11:19 AM

Mike Tanier, of the New York Times, reports that Football Outsiders statistical model that predicted bounce-back years for the 2007 Packers and 2008 Ravens give the St. Louis Rams a 48% chance of winning nine or more games this year. Tanier cites the 2008 Rams low percentage of forced fumbles recovered (5 out of 17), poor red zone running (a slight improvement can go a long way), and numerous injuries to starters as factors that could go the other direction in 2009 and make the Rams a winning team.

Our view: We aren't completely on board, but we have to admit that for about three or four games in the middle of 2008, the Rams looked like one of the most competitive teams in the NFC before they seemed to wilt again late in the season. Steve Spagnuolo should create an aggressive attack-based defense, and we know that Steven Jackson is one of the best RBs in the league. New offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur should make him the focus of the offense. The real key is probably the health of Marc Bulger. If Bulger can play at least 14 games, expect Donnie Avery to have a breakout year.

Rams | Barron likely to begin season as starting left tackle    Wed Jul 1, 06:00 PM

Bill Coats, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports that OT Alex Barron will begin the season as the starter at left tackle, barring injury or training camp developments. This means #2 overall pick Jason Smith will be at right tackle.

Our view: Not the greatest news for Marc Bulger, as Jason Smith is actually a very advanced pass blocker for a rookie because he played almost exclusively in a two-point stance at Baylor. Coats says the Rams will do this because they want to take a long look at Barron as a left tackle in the last year of his contract to see if he's worth keeping. One can assume that if Barron fails to protect Bulger early, the team will move Smith to left tackle, but the fragile Bulger could be hurt bad enough to miss multiple games by the time that happens.
