Colts | Have not contacted David Garrard    Tue Sep 27, 01:43 PM

Free-agent QB David Garrard (Jaguars) has said that the Indianapolis Colts have not contacted him. The team is also not interested in retired QB Kurt Warner or free-agent QB Marc Bulger (Ravens).

Footballguys view: The last we heard from Garrard his agent proclaimed that his client wants to be a long-term solution and not a short-term answer. Good luck with that Garrard.

NFL | Marc Bulger retiring    Wed Aug 3, 11:04 AM

Free-agent QB Marc Bulger (Ravens) has said he is retiring. Bulger, who went to two Pro Bowls during his career, spent 11 seasons in the NFL.

Footballguys view: Bulger was thought to land in Miami where he could compete with Chad Henne. Some thought he would stay in Baltimore where he could continue to backup Joe Flacco. Now that he's retiring the Ravens will use sixth-round pick Tyrod Taylor as their backup QB.

Ravens | Want to re-sign Marc Bulger    Wed Jul 27, 10:31 AM

The Baltimore Ravens would like to re-sign free-agent QB Marc Bulger, but they need to find a way to fit him under their salary cap. Bulger reportedly was in conversations with the Arizona Cardinals Tuesday, July 26, but it is not clear what his level of interest is in them.

Footballguys view: Earlier reports stated Bulger wants to stay on the East Coast, but Arizona could offer him a clear cut starting job. Baltimore would lie to keep him around as the primary backup behind Joe Flacco. They need veteran insurance as they gear up to make a Super Bowl run in 2011.

Cardinals | Four different QB options on the radar    Tue Jul 26, 04:36 PM

The Arizona Cardinals, in their pursuit for a new starting quarterback, have had trade talks with the Denver Broncos about QB Kyle Orton and the Philadelphia Eagles about QB Kevin Kolb. They have also dipped into the free-agent market and are talking with the agents for free agent QBs Matt Hasselbeck (Seahawks) and Marc Bulger (Ravens). The Cardinals have Kolb and Orton rated closely and talent. Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt cautioned signing or trading for a quarterback on Tuesday, July 26, may be unlikely because of the complicated process needing more time.

Footballguys view: Kolb's asking price may be too high which would force the team to look at Kyle Orton instead. Hasselbeck would be a quality option for the team but seems destined to end up in Tennessee. Bulger may not be an option for the Cardinals as reports have stated he wants to stay on the East Coast.

Ravens | Marc Bulger would like to return     Tue Jul 19, 11:56 AM

Free-agent QB Marc Bulger (Ravens) likes playing for the Baltimore Ravens, gets along well with QB Joe Flacco and has strong interest in returning to the team.

Footballguys view: Some feel Bulger is very comfortable being a backup player. He wants to stay on the East coast, and the Ravens certainly need a sound veteran behind Flacco in case of injury.

Cardinals | Marc Bulger not interested?     Tue Jul 19, 11:47 AM

Free-agent QB Marc Bulger (Ravens) is not interested in playing for the Arizona Cardinals, according to a source.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Earlier this offseason word came out that Bulger wanted to stay on the East coast. We could see the Dolphins adding him to compete with Chad Henne for the starting job. The Ravens may also make a strong push to keep him as the backup behind Joe Flacco.

Panthers | Could have interest in Marc Bulger    Sun Jun 26, 01:02 PM

The Carolina Panthers could be interested in Baltimore Ravens impending free-agent QB Marc Bulger once free agency begins.

Footballguys view: Bulger wants to stay on the East coast and could begin the season as the starter until first overall pick Cam Newton is ready to take over. We think Bulger will end up with the Redskins or the Dolphins.

Ravens | Would welcome QB Bulger back    Fri Jun 24, 04:10 PM

Mike Wilkening, from ProFootballWeekly.com, reports the Baltimore Ravens would welcome back free agent QB Marc Bulger if he doesn't find a better offer elsewhere. Bulger could remain the primary backup behind Joe Flacco.

Footballguys view: Bulger did a fine job as the backup behind Flacco last year and some feel he doesn't necessarily want a starting job. Staying in Baltimore is always an option, but we feel Bulger could end up in Miami to compete against Chad Henne for the starting job.

Dolphins | Could add QB Bulger    Mon Jun 20, 01:43 PM

Omar Kelly, from the South Florida Sun Sentinel, reports via Twitter that even though nobody knows the new free agent rules he feels the Dolphins will at least add a veteran QB like Marc Bulger.

Footballguys view: Bulger wants to stay on the East Coast and could compete with Chad Henne for the Dolphins starting job in training camp. He is a valuable veteran backup who could fill in as the starter if need be.

Dolphins | Lockout forced QB Henne into leadership role    Sun Jun 5, 08:34 PM

Omar Kelly, from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, reports the lockout has forced veteran QB Chad Henne into a leadership role with the Dolphins. Henne and OT Jake Long coordinated the players only workouts for the team, and are teaching a cliff-notes version of Brian Daboll's offense to their teammates.

Footballguys view: It's great to see Henne step up into the leadership role for the team. This change could help him hold off veteran competition and win the starting job in training camp. The Dolphins are likely to bring in a guy like Marc Bulger, Matt Moore, or Vince Young to compete for the starting role.

Redskins | Unlikely to add QB Young    Sun Jun 5, 08:10 PM

Jim Wyatt, from the Tennessean, commented in an interview on The Audible that the Washington Redskins are unlikely to add Vince Young to their roster. Wyatt notes the close relationship between Mike Shanahan and former Titans head coach Jeff Fisher as the reason why Young would be avoided.

Footballguys view: It's difficult to believe Fisher would give Shanahan a ringing endorsement of Young in a private conversation. The Redskins need to add more QBs to the roster and could be interested in guys like Marc Bulger or Rex Grossman. Donovan McNabb is going to be cut once the lockout is lifted which leaves only John Beck on the roster.

Dolphins | Marc Bulger to South Florida?    Thu May 26, 02:33 AM

The Miami Dolphins might show an interest in free-agent QB Marc Bulger (Ravens), especially since he doesn't want to leave the East Coast.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals have been strongly linked to Kevin Kolb, so the Dolphins may present one of the best chances for Bulger to start this season - if he even wants to.

Vikings | Could show interest in Marc Bulger    Wed May 25, 02:55 PM

The Minnesota Vikings could show interest in Baltimore Ravens impending free-agent QB Marc Bulger once free-agency begins.

Footballguys view: The longer the lockout goes the more likely the Vikings are to add a veteran QB via trade or free agency. Bulger reportedly wants to stay on the East Coast, so Minnesota may not be able to sign him. Kyle Orton is an option for the team and he could start ahead of Christian Ponder until the rookie QB is ready.

Dolphins | Could be interested in QB Bulger    Tue May 24, 11:05 AM

Cecil Lammey, NFL Insider for FRSN and senior writer at Footballguys.com, reports via Twitter that with free agent QB Marc Bulger wanting to stay on the East Coast the Dolphins could be interested in adding him to the roster to compete with Chad Henne for the starting job in training camp.

Footballguys view: Henne is going to have competition for the starting job and Bulger could be a good fit. The new tweaks to the offense include quicker drops by the quarterback and shorter routes by the wide receivers. This is perfect for Bulger's skill set. After backing up Joe Flacco in 2010, Bulger is healthy and ready to prove himself as a starter in this league once again.

Redskins | May have an interest in QB Bulger    Tue May 24, 11:02 AM

Cecil Lammey, NFL Insider from FRSN and senior writer at Footballguys.com, reports via Twitter that free agent QB Marc Bulger wants to stay on the East Coast and sources have told him the Redskins may have an interest in adding the veteran QB once free agency opens up.

Footballguys view: This move would make a lot of sense for the Redskins. Currently they only have John Beck on the roster, and it would be a disaster if he was their starter. Bulger is looking to make a comeback after getting shellshocked, punished, and hurt during his last season with the Rams. He's healthy after spending 2010 behind Joe Flacco in Baltimore, and could step in and start from day one for the Redskins.

Cardinals | Willing to give up two second-rounders for Kolb?    Mon May 23, 12:54 PM

John Clayton, from ESPN.com, believes the Cardinals would be willing to give up two second-round picks for Eagles QB Kevin Kolb.

Footballguys view: It's questionable whether or not that offer would get the deal done. Philadelphia is rumored to want at least one first-round pick for Kolb. Marc Bulger apparently doesn't have an interest in playing for Arizona, so that would leave Kyle Orton as the fallback option for the Cardinals.

Cardinals | Bulger doesn't want to go to Arizona    Mon May 23, 12:45 PM

John Clayton, from ESPN.com, reports from what he's heard free agent veteran QB Marc Bulger does not want to go to Arizona.

Footballguys view: Bulger to Arizona was a hot rumor earlier in the year but has died down in recent weeks. He may choose to stay in Baltimore where he can continue to backup Joe Flacco. The Cardinals have a serious interest in Eagles QB Kevin Kolb and see Broncos QB Kyle Orton as a 'Plan B' if Kolb's asking price is too high.

Cardinals | Bulger a fallback option at QB    Fri May 20, 03:58 PM

Mike Sando, from ESPN.com, believes the Cardinals could see free agent QB Marc Bulger as more of a fallback option than their primary target at the position.

Footballguys view: The team is rumored to be heavily interested in adding Kevin Kolb, and some in the media have called the future pairing a 'slam dunk.' If Kolb's asking price is too high (at least one first-round pick) then the team could look to guys like Bulger or Kyle Orton.

Ravens | Could re-sign Marc Bulger     Thu May 19, 03:36 PM

The Baltimore Ravens could be able to re-sign impending free-agent QB Marc Bulger this offseason if Bulger is not able to find what he wants in free agency.

Footballguys view: Bulger could get an opportunity to start for another team, and would likely move on to get that chance. However, if no starting jobs are there for him he could stay in Baltimore where he was a sound veteran reserve behind Joe Flacco.

NFL | Bulger best as a backup?    Thu May 19, 12:05 PM

Tony Softli, from ESPN 101 in St. Louis, believes free agent Marc Bulger should only be considered a backup caliber quarterback. Shell-shocked quarterbacks really struggle with happy feet and give up on a play rather than stand in there and throw under pressure.

Footballguys view: Bulger should get another chance to prove himself as a starter, even if it's only as a caretaker in front of a rookie franchise quarterback. He was beat up like a pinata in St. Louis but looked good with the Ravens as a backup and is ready for a fresh start.

Panthers | Will take long look at veteran QBs    Sun May 15, 07:35 PM

Dan Parr, from ProFootballWeekly.com, reports the Carolina Panthers are going to take a long look at veteran quarterbacks once free agency is open. Panthers GM Marty Hurney may look into trading for a veteran, but guys like Kerry Collins and Marc Bulger could fit what they want and are unrestricted free agents.

Footballguys view: Cam Newton is the QB of the future, but it may take some time for him to adapt to a pro style offense after running the spread option in college. Adding a guy like Collins or Bulger would allow the team to groom Newton slowly and not rush him into the starting lineup.

Cardinals | Could act fast on Kevin Kolb    Thu May 12, 09:51 AM

The Arizona Cardinals are likely to call the Philadelphia Eagles as soon as they are allowed regarding the availability of QB Kevin Kolb. The Cardinals can't afford for this to be a long process. They will want a quick resolution, because if they can't get Kolb, they will want to pursue Baltimore Ravens impending free-agent QB Marc Bulger, Denver Broncos QB Kyle Orton or Seattle Seahawks impending free-agent QB Matt Hasselbeck before they are off the market.

Footballguys view: The market for Kevin Kolb could be hot and heavy once free agency is opened up. We could see the Eagles adding at least one first-round pick for the young, unproven QB with high upside.

Dolphins | Could be interested in QB Bulger    Sun May 8, 04:02 PM

Armando Salguero, from the Miami Herald, reports the Dolphins may have interest in veteran free agent QB Marc Bulger.

Footballguys view: Bulger was Joe Flacco's backup last year in Baltimore and could get his career back on track if he's well protected by the offensive line. Many assume that he'll go to Arizona when free agency opens up, but he could have other suitors. The Dolphins want someone to compete with Chad Henne for the starting job in training camp.

Cardinals | Not interested in Donovan McNabb?    Thu May 5, 03:05 PM

Kent Somers, from the Arizona Republic, believes the Cardinals are not interested in adding veteran QB Donovan McNabb.

Dolphins | Could be interested in Marc Bulger    Wed May 4, 04:56 PM

The Miami Dolphins could show interest in Baltimore Ravens impending free-agent QB Marc Bulger this offseason if they are unable to trade for Cincinnati Bengals QB Carson Palmer.

Footballguys view: Many people automatically assume that Bulger will be snatched up by the Cardinals once free agency is open. However, there could be several teams interested in the Rams former starter. Bulger backed up Joe Flacco last year, was able to stay healthy for the first time in years, and if protected could see a career resurgence in 2011.

Titans | Could add veteran QB to mentor Locker    Tue May 3, 11:53 AM

John Glennon, from the Tennessean, reports the Titans could add a veteran free agent QB to mentor rookie Jake Locker. Options for the team include Kerry Collins, Matt Hasselbeck, and Marc Bulger.

Footballguys view: Locker has plenty of starting experience from his college days at Washington, but the team may feel more comfortable easing him into the lineup his rookie season. Collins has a long relationship with the team, while Hasselbeck and Bulger could be quality veteran options with decent price tags.

Ravens | Will not file tampering charges against Arizona    Mon May 2, 10:20 AM

Jamison Hensley, from the Baltimore Sun, reports a Baltimore Ravens source said the team will not pursue tampering charges against the Arizona Cardinals because it would be difficult to find evidence to prove the Cardinals have an understanding with QB Marc Bulger to sign him. Bulger was the Ravens' backup quarterback last season. Even though Bulger will be an unrestricted free agent, he is technically on the Ravens until the new league year begins.

Footballguys view: When free agency begins we fully expect Marc Bulger to be a member of the Arizona Cardinals. He would be following in the footsteps of Kurt Warner once again, just like he did in St. Louis. The two former Rams QBs have similar skill sets and the Cardinals are hoping they can spark the passing game with a player like Bulger under center.

Cardinals | Could trade for a quarterback    Fri Apr 29, 10:17 AM

The Arizona Cardinals could have a new quarterback for the 2011 season by Monday, May 2. The team is expected to pursue Baltimore Ravens impending free-agent QB Marc Bulger. However, the team could also test the trade waters and make offers to the Philadelphia Eagles for QB Kevin Kolb, to the Denver Broncos for QB Kyle Orton or the Cincinnati Bengals for QB Carson Palmer. The Cardinals still could draft a quarterback in the second round of the NFL Draft with the No. 38 overall pick. However, the feeling inside the organization has been that head coach Ken Whisenhunt would prefer to rely on a veteran to run the offense.

Footballguys view: Rumors have linked Bulger to Arizona for a long time and Kolb is another obvious thought. Arizona decided the risk outweighed the reward with this draft class and will look to fix their quarterback issues with a veteran.

49ers | Could show interest in Marc Bulger    Fri Mar 25, 12:43 PM

The San Francisco 49ers could show interest in Baltimore Ravens impending free-agent QB Marc Bulger when free agency starts, reports Michael Lombardi, of NFL Network.

Footballguys view: Many people automatically assume that Bulger is going to Arizona, but there will be other teams interested. San Francisco needs a change at the quarterback position and Bulger may be an option for them. Even if they add Bulger they could still select a quarterback with a premium pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.

Cardinals | Team not inclined to spend money on a veteran QB    Sun Mar 20, 03:08 PM

Brad Biggs, from NationalFootballPost.com, reports Arizona Cardinals owner Bill Bidwell doesn't want to spend big money for a veteran quarterback at this point.

Footballguys view: According to the report free agent QB Marc Bulger could be on his way to Arizona with a one-year $4 million deal. This is the same type of deal that Kurt Warner signed when he went to Arizona after a bad stint with the New York Giants.

Cardinals | Larry Fitzgerald has eyes on Kevin Kolb, Marc Bulger    Sun Feb 6, 12:22 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald was asked by the team's brass for his opinion on which quarterback the team should try to trade for or sign as a free agent during the offseason, reports ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Footballguys view: Fitzgerald's first suggestion was Eagles QB Kevin Kolb, who is likely on the trade block as Philly is moving forward with Michael Vick as their starter. Fitzgerald also brought up Ravens backup QB Marc Bulger, who will be a free agent this offseason. Fitzgerald is entering the final year of his contract with the team, and they want to keep him happy to better their chances of re-signing him to a long-term deal. Bulger could follow in the footsteps of former Rams QB Kurt Warner and could work well with Fitzgerald and the Cardinals.

Cardinals | Looked to sign Marc Bulger this offseason    Wed Dec 8, 10:06 AM

The Arizona Cardinals were interested in signing QB Marc Bulger during the offseason but could not wait to sign him because he was not released until April, reports Kent Somers, of The Arizona Republic. The Cardinals were interested after Bulger was released but did not want to pay three veterans at that time. Bulger ended up signing with the Baltimore Ravens.

Footballguys view: Bulger would be a serious upgrade over Derek Anderson, Max Hall, or John Skelton. Larry Fitzgerald's fantasy owners would have been a lot happier this year if Bulger was in Arizona.

Ravens | Troy Smith fine with QB Marc Bulger addition    Wed Jul 21, 06:54 PM

Ravens | Ed Reed questions Marc Bulger addition    Wed Jul 21, 10:22 AM

Baltimore Ravens FS Ed Reed said during a radio interview that QB Troy Smith would be more qualified to serve as the team's backup quarterback than QB Marc Bulger, according to The Baltimore Sun. Reed said Smith would give the team a better chance to win a championship if called upon and that Bulger is 'just another guy that's been in the league and been around.'

Footballguys view: There were players on the roster that thought Smith should have gotten the starting nod during Flacco's rookie season (after Smith recovered from his illness). We like Smith's game, but the Ravens have indicated they don't trust him as their backup and that's why Marc Bulger was signed. Smith has been wanting a trade for some time now so he could have a shot at being a starter somewhere else, and the Ravens could deal him before the season if the price is right.

Ravens | Joe Flacco hopes Marc Bulger will not affect chemistry    Mon Jul 19, 02:47 PM

Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco said he likes that the team added QB Marc Bulger but hopes that the chemistry between the team's quarterbacks will not be affected by the addition, reports Jamison Hensley, of The Baltimore Sun. 'Hopefully, we just all get along well. When you have a little bit of tension in the room, it doesn't lend to playing well. Yeah, he might bring a thing here or there that helps me out. We'll see. It's all about going out there, preparing during the week and having a good time doing that. Hopefully, we can do that,' Flacco said.

Footballguys view: Bulger was signed by the Ravens to be veteran insurance in case Flacco goes down with an injury. This move could force either Troy Smith or John Beck off the roster. Smith has been wanting a trade for some time now, but the Ravens have hesitated to trade him so far.

Ravens | Marc Bulger looking forward to helping Joe Flacco    Thu Jul 15, 02:33 PM

Baltimore Ravens QB Marc Bulger said he is looking forward to helping OB Joe Flacco anyway he can during training camp, reports The Baltimore Sun's Jamison Hensley. Bulger said he will allow Flacco to tell him how much help he needs. 'I'm going to let Joe let me know how much input he wants me to give. I just don't want to be the know-it-all backup. It's real easy to stand in the background and stand on the sideline. I'll leave it up to Joe how much help he wants. But I'll be there for anything he needs,' Bulger said.

Footballguys view: Bulger is what 'Flo' from Progressive would call good insurance. He was signed by the Ravens to help tutor Flacco as he continues to develop his pro game, and Bulger could fill in effectively if Flacco were to miss time with injury. The Ravens have Super Bowl aspirations, but the entire fate of the team rests on the play of the quarterback. Flacco has more weapons around him than ever before, and the Ravens have a nice backup in Bulger.

Ravens | Sign QB Marc Bulger    Wed Jun 23, 05:59 PM

Adam Schefter, from ESPN, reports the Ravens and former Rams quarterback Marc Bulger reached agreement on a one-year, $3.8 million deal.

Footballguys view: The Ravens have added several weapons to the offense this offseason, but needed more insurance in case Joe Flacco were to go down with an injury. Bulger is still a capable quarterback, and will be protected much better than he was in St. Louis. This signing is also an indication of what the Ravens think about backup QBs Troy Smith and John Beck. We can't imagine the Ravens carrying four quarterbacks into the regular season, so one of them might be traded or released. Because of Cam Cameron's relationship with John Beck, we think Troy Smith might be on his way out of Baltimore.

Kent Somers, from the Arizona Republic, reports backup quarterback Derek Anderson has yet to dispel the reputation for inconsistency he earned with the Cleveland Browns. He has been both impressive and erratic - often in the same series of plays - during off-season work.

Footballguys view: Anderson has rarely shown any consistency to his game, and that's why the Cardinals may be in the market for another backup quarterback like Marc Bulger.

Cardinals | Have not had recent discussions with Marc Bulger    Tue Jun 8, 12:02 PM

The Arizona Cardinals have not had recent discussions with free-agent QB Marc Bulger's (Rams) agent, Tom Condon, according to Kent Somers, of the Arizona Republic. Bulger wants to continue playing but is 'just taking his time' deciding for whom, Condon said.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals are looking for backup options in case Matt Leinart struggles this year. They currently have Derek Anderson as their #2 quarterback, but he's far from a reliable option. Rookies John Skelton and Max Hall are both years away from being able to take a snap during the regular season. Bulger could follow in the footsteps of former Rams great Kurt Warner, and could be a nice fit for the offense because of his accuracy and quick decision making.

Cardinals | Not talking with Marc Bulger    Sat May 22, 10:05 AM

The Arizona Cardinals have not engaged in discussions about signing free-agent QB Marc Bulger (Rams), according to Steve Wyche, of NFL.com. 'We are not actively engaged in discussion with Marc Bulger,' general manager Rod Graves said Friday, May 21. 'If he is interested, we're appreciative, but right now, we're focused on the guys that we have here. QB Matt Leinart has done a great job so far, but so has QB Derek Anderson and our young guys (QBs Max Hall and John Skelton).'

Footballguys view: As of right now the Cardinals are content with the quarterbacks they have on their roster. However, once training camp and preseason get here then we have a feeling the Cardinals could be regretting the decision not to sign Marc Bulger. The veteran has a couple of options on where to sign this year, but doesn't seem to be in any hurry to get a deal done.

Cardinals | Unlikely to pursue Bulger    Fri Apr 9, 12:33 PM

Kent Somers, of The Arizona Republic, reports the Arizona Cardinals likely will not pursue unrestricted free-agent QB Marc Bulger (Rams) because it does not appear they are anxious to add another veteran quarterback.

Footballguys view: It looks like Bulger may not follow in Kurt Warner's footsteps after all. The Cardinals seem happy at this time to roll with Matt Leinart and Derek Anderson for 2010. Bulger could wind up in Chicago, where he could reunite with Mike Martz and play backup behind Jay Cutler.

Jets | Not interested in Bulger    Tue Apr 6, 10:12 AM

Rich Cimini, of the New York Daily News, reports the New York Jets have no current interest in free-agent QB Marc Bulger (Rams).

Footballguys view: The Jets could use a better backup behind Mark Sanchez, but seem content to move forward with Kellen Clemens continuing in that role.
