Lions | Mark Brunell hired by DET    Fri Jan 29, 09:31 AM

Former QB Mark Brunell was hired by the Detroit Lions as quarterbacks coach Friday, Jan. 29.

Footballguys view: Now the question will be who is he going to work with? The Lions have Matthew Stafford on the market and will likely look for a bridge quarterback to a rookie that they take this year at #7 (or higher) or possibly in 2022.

Lions | Detroit considering Mark Brunell as QB coach    Thu Jan 28, 03:05 PM

Former NFL quarterback Mark Brunell - currently serving as a radio host in Jacksonville - is interviewing with the Detroit Lions to become the team's quarterback coach Thursday, Jan. 28.

Footballguys view: Brunell was a long-time NFL quarterback, and most will remember him as a starter for the Jaguars. Later in his playing career, Brunell served almost as a player-coach and helped guys like Jason Campbell. He has been a head coach, but that was in Jacksonville for the Episcopal Eagles. This would be his first foray into official NFL coaching.

NFL | Mark Brunell not retiring    Tue Apr 24, 12:04 PM

Free-agent QB Mark Brunell (Jets) said he has no plans to retire this season and is hoping to sign with a team before training camps begin.

Footballguys view: Brunell may have to wait a long time before a team gives him a call. Perhaps injuries in training camp will open up opportunity for Brunell.

NFL | Mark Brunell expected to retire    Tue Apr 24, 01:55 AM

Free-agent QB Mark Brunell (Jets) wants to make sure the NFL door is shut completely before turning in his retirement papers, but he is expected to retire. He wants to take a year off as his family prepares to move back to Jacksonville.

Footballguys view: Hard to believe that Brunell played in the NFL for 18 seasons. He began his career in Green Bay as a backup behind Brett Favre. Brunell will best be remembered for his time as the Jaguars starting QB where he had several years of success. He's been a veteran backup behind Mark Sanchez over the last two years, and is unlikely to get much interest from other teams.

Jets | Mark Sanchez not happy     Wed Nov 23, 09:40 AM

New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez (neck) is not happy over head coach Rex Ryan's decision to give a few first-team reps in practice to QB Mark Brunell. Sanchez clearly was not amused as he spoke to reporters in the locker room Tuesday, Nov. 22. 'That's the coach's decision,' Sanchez said. 'I'm just controlling what I can, and that's trying to improve, make better decisions with the football and taking the reps I have and doing well with them.' Sanchez apparently is angry enough about it that he's giving Ryan the silent treatment. 'For real. He has not said one word (to me),' Ryan said. 'He probably knows what I'm doing. I know Mark Sanchez extremely well ... If it takes me to do this, and take a punch in the nose, I don't care. I'll take it. But we got to have it from him. He's the guy. He's my guy. And we have to have it from him.'

Footballguys view: Jets fans aren't happy either. This offense needs to play with more consistency if the Jets are going to stay in the playoff hunt.

Jets | Mark Brunell sees first-team reps    Tue Nov 22, 06:04 PM

New York Jets QB Mark Brunell saw some first-team repetitions in practice Tuesday, Nov. 22, head coach Rex Ryan's way of trying to motivate QB Mark Sanchez. Brunell took four of 30 first-team reps after taking two Monday, Nov. 21. 'We do have to have guys prepared,' Ryan said. 'Mark's played well, but do I want to get the one guy (Brunell) a snap? Absolutely. I think it does send a message that, 'hey, every single player -- no matter how good -- Darrelle Revis doesn't take every snap in practice a lot of times.'

Jets | Mark Brunell mimicking Tim Tebow in practice    Wed Nov 16, 09:50 AM

The New York Jets have been using QB Mark Brunell on the scout team in practice to mimic Denver Broncos QB Tim Tebow. In his prime, Brunell was one of the league's more mobile quarterbacks. 'I'm left-handed and he is left-handed, and that's about it right there,' Brunell joked when asked how similar he is to Tebow.

Footballguys view: Wow. Brunell doesn't have the wheels he used to and is not the player we would use to mimic Tebow. The Jets would be better served using FB John Conner in that role because his size is similar to that of Tebow and the Broncos won't pass a lot on Thursday night if they don't have to.

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said QB Mark Brunell likely will the primary backup quarterback this season, according to Manish Mehta, of the New York Daily News.

Footballguys view: Brunell won a Super Bowl ring backing up Drew Brees last year, and now will try to get back to the big game backing up Mark Sanchez in New York. Adding him to the roster could push someone like Kevin O'Connell or Erik Ainge off the final roster. Kellen Clemens is now the Jets third-string quarterback.

The New York Jets have signed unrestricted free-agent QB Mark Brunell (Saints) to a two-year deal, according to Jason La Canfora, of NFL Network. Brunell will receive around the veteran minimum each season.

Footballguys view: Brunell won a Super Bowl last year as the primary backup behind Drew Brees. The Jets want him behind Mark Sanchez for veteran insurance. He's not the same player he used to be, but he's not as bad as Brad Johnson was at the end of his career. This move could push players like Erik Ainge and Kevin O'Connell off the final roster.

The New York Jets will sign unrestricted free-agent QB Mark Brunell (Saints) as soon as Thursday, July 22, reports ESPNNewYork.com's Rich Cimini.

Footballguys view: The Jets are built to make a Super Bowl run, but the quarterbacks behind starter Mark Sanchez aren't exciting options in case of emergency. Brunell won a Super Bowl ring last year backing up Drew Brees in New Orleans, and the team feels he's a much better option than Kellen Clemens, Erik Ainge, or Kevin O'Connell.

Jets | Players favor Kellen Clemens as the No. 2 quarterback     Wed Jun 30, 09:52 AM

'Brunell? Isn't he like 50 years old?' said one player of Brunell, who will turn 40 in September.

Jets | Kellen Clemens' days could be numbered    Thu Jun 10, 04:13 PM

New York Jets QB Kellen Clemens' days with the Jets may be numbered because the team is expected to sign unrestricted free-agent QB Mark Brunell (Saints) at some point in July, reports ESPNNewYork.com's Rick Cimini.

Footballguys view: Clemens may be best served just going to another team and starting over. Once thought of as the quarterback of the future behind Chad Pennington, his future turned bleak when inconsistencies plagued his game. Some other team could see him as an upgrade for their backup quarterback, although it's a pretty bad sign when you're replaced by 100-year old Mark Brunell.

Chris Mortensen, from ESPN, reports via Twitter that there's two things you can basicallly bank on : Mark Brunell to the Jets & Patrick Ramsey to the Saints come mid-July as backup QBs.

Footballguys view: We reported on the Saints interest in Ramsey earlier today. Brunell won a championship with the Saints last year, but they're looking for a new backup behind Drew Brees. If the Jets signed Brunell, he would challenge Kellen Clemens for the backup job behind Mark Sanchez. This signing could also push Kevin O'Connell or Erik Ainge (or both) off the roster.
