Lions | Ryan Broyles given walking papers    Mon Aug 31, 09:04 AM

Detroit Lions WR Ryan Broyles was cut Monday, Aug. 31.

Footballguys view: "What might have been" will always be the story with Broyles. Before multiple knee injuries, Broyles looked like a special talent.

Lions | Ryan Broyles fighting for spot    Sat Aug 22, 10:18 AM

Detroit Lions WR Ryan Broyles has made plays during the preseason games, but he will have to overtake WR Jeremy Ross for a roster spot.

Footballguys view: We loved his natural talent coming out of Oklahoma, but Broyles' career should always read "what might have been." Broyles has lost some explosiveness because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament and an Achilles' tendon injury in his career.

Lions | Little action for Ryan Broyles    Thu Aug 20, 11:18 PM

Detroit Lions WR Ryan Broyles didn't see a target in the first three quarters of the preseason game against the Washington Redskins Thursday, Aug. 20.

Footballguys view: Broyles is never going to be what he could have been before injuries derailed his career. Even dynasty owners in super deep leagues should have moved on.

Lions | Ryan Broyles on outside looking in?    Thu Aug 13, 12:10 AM

Detroit Lions WR Ryan Broyles is not expected to make the 53-man roster, according to beat writer Tim Twentyman. He feels the Lions will keep five wide receivers with WRs Calvin Johnson, Golden Tate, Corey Fuller, Jeremy Ross and Lance Moore making the roster.

Footballguys view: Broyles may always be remembered as "what might have been" because of injuries that derailed his career (even back in college). We'll see if he can do enough to make the final roster in Detroit.

Lions | Detroit's slot WR job up for grabs    Mon Jul 6, 07:02 PM

Detroit Lions WRs Jeremy Ross, Corey Fuller, Ryan Broyles and Lance Moore will all be candidates for the slot receiver job during training camp. Ross worked with the first-team offense during offseason workouts, but his roster spot is uncertain at this point.

Footballguys view: RB Theo Riddick could also figure into the mix. Moore is the grizzled veteran of the group and he seems to be happy to be out of Pittsburgh. Broyles' perseverance has to be admired after coming back from yet another catastrophic injury. Ross will likely make the team as a return man, and Fuller has the best deep speed of the group, with some upside as a receiver to spare. When you add in 2014 first-round TE Eric Ebron and redzone monster Joseph Fauria, the Lions have a diverse supporting cast behind Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate in the passing game.

Lions | Ryan Broyles misses OTAs    Wed Jun 10, 01:11 PM

Detroit Lions WR Ryan Broyles did not participate in organized team activities Wednesday, June 10. Head coach Jim Caldwell said the absence was not due to an injury.

Footballguys view: Broyles has an injury history that reads like Infinite Jest. This is not an injury situation, and that's good news for the talented but oft-injured veteran receiver.

Lions | Calvin Johnson missed another practice    Fri Oct 10, 12:42 PM

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) skipped his third straight practice of the week Friday, Oct. 10, for the first time this year. Head coach Jim Caldwell said a decision on Johnson's status for Week 6 against the Minnesota Vikings has not been determined, however. 'And also, you never know. There's a possibility. A couple weeks ago, I really didn't think he'd be available but the fact of the matter is he came out after doctors looked at him and said, hey, you know what, he can go,' Caldwell said. WRs Corey Fuller, Jeremy Ross and Ryan Broyles and TE Eric Ebron would be tasked with replacing Johnson as a committee if he doesn't play.

Footballguys view: Johnson not playing would honestly be best for his owners and the Lions right now anyway. He has only gotten worse trying to play through the injury over the last two weeks. Golden Tate becomes a must start with Johnson out.

Lions | Calvin Johnson's status unknown    Thu Sep 25, 04:06 PM

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson's (ankle) status for Week 4 against the New York Jets is unknown after he missed his second straight day of practice Thursday, Sept. 25. Johnson said Wednesday, Sept. 24, that he would be fine for Sunday, Sept. 28. The Lions would likely look for WRs Corey Fuller and Ryan Broyles to step up Sunday if Johnson can't play.

Footballguys view: We expect Calvin Johnson to play, you expect Calvin Johnson to play and the Jets expect Calvin Johnson to play. It's worth watching up until kickoff just in case, but Johnson should be good to go and against this secondary, primed for top WR1 numbers.

The Detroit Lions have declared CB Cassius Vaughn, SS James Ihedigbo, QB Kellen Moore, OT LaAdrian Waddle, RB Montell Owens, WR Ryan Broyles, LB Travis Lewis inactive for Week 3.

Lions | Ryan Broyles focusing on rehab    Fri Aug 1, 02:03 AM

Detroit Lions WR Ryan Broyles (Achilles') is trying to take things one day at a time after two days of training camp following a torn Achilles' tendon in 2013, saying he feels 'pretty good right now.' Broyles missed time in 2011 and 2012 with torn anterior cruciate ligaments in both knees, and he understands how to prepare for a season while rehabbing a major injury. Broyles has a new speed coach and is working on becoming more explosive, while not putting too much stress on his knees.

Footballguys view: Broyles could contribute, but his chances of ever living up to his second-round pick value or fantasy relevance are very remote after his litany of serious injuries. That he continues to work his way back to the field after so many catastrophes is a testament to Broyles endurance and perseverance.

Offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi singled out Ogletree during the spring as a player that impressed him.

Lions | Ryan Broyles looks in shape    Mon Jul 7, 05:35 PM

Lions | Ryan Broyles looking to work with speed coach    Sun Jul 6, 11:21 PM

Detroit Lions WR Ryan Broyles (Achilles') said he was going to look to work with a speed coach in the weeks leading up to training camp. Broyles said his rehab went well this offseason and was able to fully participate in minicamp.

Footballguys view: That Broyles could still make the Lions roster this year is a testament to his perseverance. He has come back from two ACL tears, and if Broyles can get back to any kind of functional level of NFL play after an achilles tear, he'll be a terrific player to cite as a reason to not give up on players who know how to work back from multiple serious injuries. He is still very unlikely to have any fantasy value this year.

Lions | Believe in Ryan Broyles    Wed Jun 25, 09:22 AM

Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said he believes in WR Ryan Broyles. 'I believe in Ryan, and he's one of the hardest-working guys I've ever seen in terms of rehab, practice. He's just outstanding,' Mayhew said. 'I'm not going to build a whole offense around him, obviously, but I believe in that man.'

Footballguys view: Broyles has to be hard-working to come back from as many serious injuries as he has in the last few years of his career. The Lions' actions in the offseason of signing Golden Tate and drafting Eric Ebron echo Mayhew's point that Broyles won't be a central part of the offense, but he could still contribute. In dynasty leagues, it was time to move on from Broyles last year, but in NFL terms, he could still hang around, which is a testament to his perseverance.

Lions | Ryan Broyles farther along    Wed Jun 11, 08:41 AM

Detroit Lions WR Ryan Broyles (Achilles') said he's farther along in his rehab from Achilles' surgery than he was for his anterior cruciate ligament tears the two previous years. He has been cleared to do everything, but he's continuing to work on his speed and conditioning.

Footballguys view: We love Broyles' talent, but the kid just can't stay healthy. With the addition of WR Golden Tate and TE Eric Ebron this offseason, the Lions now have other weapons behind Calvin Johnson. Even if he's healthy, Broyles would be the fifth or sixth target in the passing game. That's not someone who will be much of a fantasy factor. Don't give up on him in super deep dynasty leagues just yet, but lower expectations from what he could have been before all these injuries.

Lions | Ryan Broyles learning new techniques to prevent injury    Wed Jun 4, 02:35 PM

Detroit Lions WR Ryan Broyles (Achilles') has worked on the placement of his feet, knees and hips, and is learning movements and proper form in order to eliminate future injuries. Broyles has already come back from two ACL tears and says the Achilles rehabilitation has been easier.

Footballguys view: We love Broyles' talent, but he's always hurt. We hope he stays healthy this year, but now he's further down the target list with the addition of TE Eric Ebron and WR Golden Tate.

Lions | Ryan Broyles works as WR, returner     Sun May 25, 11:52 PM

Detroit Lions WR Ryan Broyles (Achilles') worked as a wide receiver and a kick returner during organized team activities last week.

Footballguys view: Broyles is in a make-or-break year in 2014. He's a fantastic natural talent, but he's always injured. Broyles came out of Oklahoma injured and he's barely been able to contribute as a pro. If he doesn't stay healthy this year, the Lions could easily move on.

Detroit Lions WR Ryan Broyles (Achilles') is looking forward to the competition at the slot position, where first-round pick TE Eric Ebron and sixth-round pick WR T.J. Jones are also slated to see time.

Footballguys view: Broyles just can't stay healthy. We love his natural talent, but at this time it seems like his pro career will be summed up by "what might have been."

Lions | Ryan Broyles cleared to participate    Wed Apr 9, 12:15 PM

Detroit Lions WR Ryan Broyles (Achilles') has been cleared to participate in offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: Broyles is getting a "clean slate" with the new Jim Caldwell regime. He's got talent, but Broyles may never be the same player he used to be after multiple knee problems.

Lions | Ryan Broyles to IR    Wed Oct 30, 05:06 PM

The Detroit Lions placed WR Ryan Broyles (Achilles') on the season-ending Injured Reserve Wednesday, Oct. 30, and activated RB Montell Owens (knee) from the short-term Injured Reserve in a corresponding move.

Footballguys view: Broyles has the talent to be an impact player in the NFL but injuries have ruined his first two seasons in the NFL. This latest injury will take a lot of time to come back from, and there's no guarantee that he'll be ready for the start of training camp next year.

Lions | Ryan Broyles to miss rest of season    Mon Oct 28, 01:23 PM

Detroit Lions WR Ryan Broyles (Achilles') suffered a ruptured Achilles' tendon in the team's Week 8 game and will miss the rest of the season. He is scheduled to undergo surgery Tuesday, Oct. 29, to repair the injury.

Footballguys view: Bad news for Broyles here, and another injury that brings up questions about his future as a pro. Broyles is incredibly talented, but multiple knee injuries (and now this injury) have held him back as a pro. We'll see if he can even be ready for the start of training camp next year.

Lions | Ryan Broyles likely out for season    Sun Oct 27, 05:24 PM

Updating a previous report, Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said Sunday, Oct. 27, that the initial diagnosis for WR Ryan Broyles (Achilles') is a ruptured Achilles' tendon. Broyles left the Week 8 game against the Dallas Cowboys and was obviously unable to return.

Footballguys view: Broyles has had three season-ending injuries in the last three season. He has come back from two ACL tears, but at some point these injuries are going to turn him into a shell of the player he was at Oklahoma, if they haven't already.

Lions | Preaching patience with Ryan Broyles    Thu Oct 17, 03:43 PM

The Detroit Lions are being patient with WR Ryan Broyles because they weren't expecting him to play before October while he came back from his second anterior cruciate ligament tear in as many years. He sat out the first two games and played just 17 snaps in week 3, but the team had to accelerate his progress when WR Nate Burleson went down with a broken forearm. Broyles' production has been minimal, though, even though he's played almost 40 snaps per game without Burleson in the lineup. Many times, the coverage has dictated that Detroit go away from the slot receiver, Broyles' position.

Footballguys view: The injury to Nate Burleson put more onus on Broyles' development than might have existed otherwise. While he's a talented receiver, Broyles isn't quite ready for the spotlight--having a healthy Calvin Johnson to shift coverage might make a difference but for now Broyles remains someone who should stay on your bench if at all possible.

Lions | Calvin Johnson makes progress, still questionable    Fri Oct 11, 02:25 PM

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (knee) was limited in practice for the second straight day Friday, Oct. 11, and he practiced without wearing a knee brace. However, he struggled with he had to cut in his routes and will be a game-time decision in Week 6 against the Cleveland Browns.

Footballguys view: Johnson belongs in your lineup as long as he is active, but Matthew Stafford's QB1 status is a bit cloudy because of the tough matchup and the potential for Johnson to be limited.

Lions | Ryan Broyles expected to see more work    Fri Oct 11, 12:57 PM

Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan suggested that he thinks WR Ryan Broyles is ready for a full workload this week regardless of whether WR Calvin Johnson (knee) returns to the lineup. 'He's right on track so we're real happy he's been able to get this time and progress. Certainly if somebody else isn't available, his availability is going to be leaned on a little bit more.' Linehan said that the initial plan this season for Broyles was similar to last year when he was recovering from his knee injury and didn't see any real action until the sixth game of the season.

Footballguys view: Broyles might be worth a pickup in deep PPR leagues, but until he shows some of the promise that made him a second-round draft pick on the field, there are probably better waiver wire receivers to target in your league.

Lions | Ryan Broyles wants bigger role    Thu Oct 10, 07:16 PM

Detroit Lions WR Ryan Broyles (knee) said he's ready to take on a bigger role in the offense after coming off a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee last season. 'I feel good,' Broyles said. 'I feel capable of going out there and making plays. I feel like I want to do more.' He's played in 87 of 202 offensive snaps (43.1 percent) since returning this year and has been targeted just six times. Broyles has five catches for 61 yards. And he played in 28 snaps last week, which was close to half as many as he had the week prior.

Footballguys view: He has to look healthier before he can get a bigger role. Broyles had just two catches for 27 yards on two targets in the team's Week 5 loss to the Green Bay Packers. He ran only 15 routes compared to 46 for WR Kris Durham and 41 for WR Patrick Edwards.

Lions | Kris Durham's role expanded    Tue Oct 1, 07:52 PM

Detroit Lions WR Kris Durham played in 92 percent of the team's 66 offensive snaps in Week 4 win over the Chicago Bears and scored his first touchdown of the season with WRs Patrick Edwards (ankle) and Nate Burleson (forearm) out. Durham played two snaps less than WR Calvin Johnson and 20 more than WR Ryan Broyles. Durham finished with three catches for 58 yards, a career high for him. 'It gives me some confidence,' Durham said. 'I think it gives Matthew some confidence in me. I was in the right place at the right time and made good throws, good catches.'

Footballguys view: Durham is a big possession receiver who can make difficult grabs over the middle of the field. He was college roommates with Matthew Stafford and the two clearly have chemistry on the fieid. We like Durham in deep dynasty leagues, but in re-draft he's more of a low end flex play from week to week.

Lions | Ryan Broyles unleashed    Wed Sep 25, 10:38 AM

Detroit Lions WR Ryan Broyles will not be on a limited snap count in Week 4.

Footballguys view: Broyles has always had incredible talent. He's fast, has strong hands, and can make defenders miss in the open field. However, durability is a big problem for Broyles as he is coming off back to back knee injuries in the last two years. If healthy, he can be a great weapon opposite Calvin Johnson.
