Nicholas J. Cotsonika, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Lions RB Aaron Brown was benched during the team's Week 14 game after a mistake on a kickoff return. Brown fielded a bouncing ball at the Lions' one-yard line, with the sideline to his left and the goal line behind him. He was tackled at the four-yard line. Head coach Jim Schwartz said Brown could have established himself out of bounds and then touched the ball, making the ball out of bounds and giving the Lions possession at the 40-yard line. He also could have let the ball go. If the ball went out of bounds on the sideline, the Lions would have had it at the 40. If the ball went into the end zone, it could have been a touchback. WR Derrick Williams has taken over the team's kick returner role.

Receiving and running the ball are secondary in the eyes of NFL executives. Brown will have to prove that he can protect the quarterback before he's trusted as a third down back. Tom Kowalski, from MLive.com, reports rookie Aaron Brown could be the steal of the draft because of his game-breaking speed. He has the tools to be either a third-down back or a slot receiver, but he's got to do a better job of focusing and eliminating assignment mistakes. He'll contribute on special teams -- and could be the team's kickoff returner -- but he'll be a role player on offense. The more he learns the playbook, the more time he'll see on the field.
| Footballguys view: In addition to speed, Brown has very good footwork and can change direction without slowing down too much. Brown could be a very good scatback for the Lions, but he is not built to handle much work between the tackles. Durability is also a concern as Brown missed a lot of time at TCU due to knee and ankle injuries. |

The Lions are trying to get him to run more inside the tackles, as Brown likes to bounce everything outside due to his speed. Brown said he is used to running outside, but now he has to change up his game since everyone in the NFL is so much faster than college. He will also see action on kickoff and punt coverage teams, too.
