Buccaneers | Brian Urlacher to visit training camp     Fri Jan 31, 01:10 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Lovie Smith invited retired LB Brian Urlacher to visit training camp. 'Brian is a family member for life,' Smith said. 'I've had the privilege to be around a lot of great players, any great player I've been around is always welcome wherever I am. We're trying to build something here football-wise, and I'm going to call on the Brian Urlachers of the world, and of course all our former Bucs around here. Derrick Brooks will tell you I've been in his ear quite a bit, got a chance to text with John Lynch yesterday... anytime you can have players around your current roster that have been through our system and know what it takes, it's a good thing. I will always be inviting any old player that I've been around.'

NFL | Derrick Brooks to announce retirement    Wed Aug 11, 10:03 AM

Free-agent LB Derrick Brooks (Buccaneers) will announce his retirement from the National Football League Thursday, Aug. 12, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced Wednesday, Aug. 11.

Footballguys view: The Bucs decided to make a very unpopular decision and release Brooks last season after new head coach Raheem Morris took over. Brooks failed to find a job with another team in 2009, and will now retire in what is surely a Hall of Fame career. We always loved watching Brooks on Sunday because of his attitude, nose for the football, and aggressive play.

Saints | Brooks to work out Tuesday    Tue Aug 11, 12:24 PM

CBSSports.com reports free-agent LB Derrick Brooks (Buccaneers) will have a workout for the New Orleans Saints Tuesday, Aug. 11, according to head coach Sean Payton.

Footballguys view: The Saints OLBs, Scott Shanle and Scott Fujita, might be the weakest pair in any 4-3 defense, so Brooks has a realistic chance to win a starting job if he gets signed by the Saints and shows up in good shape.

Jaguars | No interest in Derrick Brooks    Sat Jul 4, 03:24 PM

Gene Frenette, from the Florida Times-Union, reports that it doesn't appear the Jaguars have much interest in throwing a life line at 36-year-old linebacker Derrick Brooks, who is still job-hunting after getting cut by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Footballguys view: Even if Brooks wanted to play for the veteran minimum, the Jaguars think 2008 draft pick Thomas Williams and rookie free agent Russell Allen will alleviate concerns about depth at the position. Brooks may have to wait until injuries hit in training camp before he gets signed by a new team.

NFL | D. Brooks has not received offers    Mon Jun 22, 10:24 AM

Peter King, of SI.com, reports free-agent LB Derrick Brooks (Buccaneers) has not received an offer from a team since he was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Brooks said he wants to play one more year.

Footballguys view: His gut feeling is he will get picked up. Some teams, most notably the New Orleans Saints, have sniffed around but no offers have been made. Derrick Brooks still has a ton of passion for the game, and wants to go out on his own terms after playing most of 2008 hurt. "I'll tell you how committed I am to play, and playing well,'' said Brooks. "I was hurt most of last year. First time in 14 years I've been hurt, and I played hurt. It affected me, obviously. But I wanted to play well so badly this year that I skipped the Pro Bowl after the season, and the day after our season ended, the day after we lost to Oakland in the last game, at 1 or 2 in the afternoon, I was in the trainers' room doing my rehab work on my hamstring. I didn't want to have any setbacks by playing in the Pro Bowl.''

NFL | Derrick Brooks says he will play in 2009    Wed Jun 17, 09:19 PM

Free agent Derrick Brooks said Wednesday he plans to play in the NFL this fall and possibly even return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a team he led to a Super Bowl victory. The NFL Defensive Player of the Year when Tampa Bay won the Super Bowl after the 2002 season, Brooks was among five players the Bucs cut in a February purge that included his former Florida State teammate, Warrick Dunn.

Footballguys view: "I could still be a Buccaneer," Brooks said. "Stranger things that have happened. Teams are talking to me so I'm going to make sure I continue to stay in shape." New Bucs coach Raheem Morris has already stated a few times that the team is going in a different direction. Never say never, but at this time it seems doubtful that Brooks will head back to Tampa.
