Chargers | Curtis Brinkley won't be tendered    Tue Mar 12, 01:59 AM

San Diego Chargers RB Curtis Brinkley is not expected to be tendered Tuesday, March 12, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Footballguys view: The market won't be white hot for Brinkley and he could return to the Chargers. The team is looking for a RB to complement (and potentially replace) Ryan Mathews in the backfield.

Chargers | Norv Turner mum on RB situation    Wed Dec 19, 06:39 PM

San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner didn't reveal his plans at running back in Week 16 after RB Ryan Mathews (clavicle) was placed on the Injured Reserve. 'Well, we've got a chance to get Ronnie Brown back' Turner said. 'Jackie Battle will get a chance to play. And Brink (Curtis Brinkley ) played some yesterday, though I don't know that he would play on third down. And we'll probably add Edwin Baker to the 53-man roster. I don't know that he would be active, but we'd have to see where Ronnie Brown is.'

Footballguys view: We'll see the Chargers use a RBBC for the rest of the year. Battle, Brinkley, and Brown will split carries and receptions out of the backfield. This is not a situation fantasy owners can find value in.

Chargers | Jackie Battle to see action    Wed Dec 19, 08:51 AM

San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner said RB Jackie Battle will get a chance to play in Week 16, and appeared to favor him over RB Curtis Brinkley.

Footballguys view: We're not relying on any of the Chargers RBs now that Ryan Mathews is out for the year. Battle or Brinkley should only be considered as desperation flex plays in week 16.

Chargers | Running game goes nowhere fast    Tue Sep 11, 01:51 AM

San Diego Chargers RB Curtis Brinkley carried 10 times for just 12 yards in Week 1 against the Oakland Raiders Monday, Sept. 10. He and WR Eddie Royal actually led the team in rushing yardage. RB Ronnie Brown carried five times for just five yards, while FB Le'Ron McClain had two carries for five yards.

Footballguys view: Ryan Mathews can't come back fast enough. He missed the game with his clavicle injury but may be back in the next week or so.

Chargers | Ronnie Brown might start in Week 1    Fri Sep 7, 09:12 PM

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (clavicle) appears to be targeting a Week 2 return, so RB Ronnie Brown is likely to get the start in his team debut in Week 1 against the Oakland Raiders Monday, Sept. 10. RBs Jackie Battle and Curtis Brinkley are also in the mix.

Footballguys view: Brown is still only a flex play after the way he looked last year with Philadelphia. Brinkley is probably a better back now, but he was hurt in the preseason. Le'Ron McClain could also figure into the mix with his prowess in short yardage. The Chargers backfield is not a place to look for safe production this week.

Chargers | To use RB committee    Sun Aug 12, 11:44 PM

San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner indicated Sunday, Aug. 12, that the team will use a running back by committee approach until RB Ryan Mathews (clavicle) is healthy enough to return. 'Right now, it'd probably be a mix' between RBs Ronnie Brown, Le'Ron McClain and Curtis Brinkley.

Footballguys view: We're hearing that Brinkley may be the guy to emerge in this RBBC. The coaching staff loves him and he plays with a nice blend of balance and elusiveness. Brown is more versatile but not the same player he used to be when he came out of Auburn years ago.

Chargers | Trio of RBs to get long look    Fri Aug 10, 11:05 PM

San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner said Friday, Aug. 10, that he did not anticipate the team bringing in a running back with RB Ryan Mathews (clavicle) sidelined four to six weeks. That means RBs Jackie Battle, Curtis Brinkley, Ronnie Brown and FB Le'Ron McClain are likely to shoulder the load during the remaining preseason games.

Footballguys view: Brown is the most versatile of the group, but he's not been impressive in recent years. McClain hasn't received a significant workload in a few years but is an effective between the tackles runner.

Chargers | Curtis Brinkley outshines Jackie Battle    Wed Aug 1, 01:33 AM

San Diego Chargers RB Curtis Brinkley had a strong practice Tuesday, July 31, and outshined RB Jackie Battle. Brinkley has reportedly looked better during training camp, as he tries to hold off Battle for a roster spot.

Footballguys view: Brinkley was outstanding in relief during the Monday night loss to Kansas City last year. If the Chargers are smart, they'll see that he's better than Ronnie Brown in addition to Battle, and make him the primary backup running back.

Chargers | Trio of RBs have added company    Sat Jul 21, 12:05 AM

The San Diego Chargers signed RB Jackie Battle Friday, July 20, making things much tougher for RBs Edwin Baker, Curtis Brinkley and Michael X. Hayes heading into training camp and the preseason.

Footballguys view: The team lost FB Mike Tolbert in free agency, and Battle will compete with Le'Ron McClain to help fill that void. We don't expect Battle to get as many touches as Tolbert but he does have the versatility to contribute as a runner and receiver out of the backfield. Norv Turner has said the team will give RB Ryan Mathews 'as much as he can handle' this year.

Chargers | Edwin Baker, Le'Ron McClain in mix for carries    Tue Jun 26, 10:11 PM

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews is the unquestioned starting tailback, but it gets murky after that on the depth chart. RB Ronnie Brown is viewed as being at the tail end of his career. Brown will try to hold off RB Curtis Brinkley for the primary backup role behind Mathews. RB Edwin Baker and FB Le'Ron McClain will also be in the mix for carries.

Footballguys view: McClain had nearly 1,000-yards rushing for the Ravens in 2008, but hasn't been asked to carry the rock in recent years. Baker has good lower body strength, elite quickness, and good initial burst. However, he lacks top end speed and is nothing more than a change of pace back in our eyes.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews frontrunner for third down role    Fri Jun 1, 04:20 PM

San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner said RB Ryan Mathews appears to be the frontrunner for the third-down running back role entering training camp. RB Curtis Brinkley and FB Le'Ron McClain could also be options for the role.

Footballguys view: Just another sign that Mathews is in for a bigger role in 2012. If he can stay healthy it wouldn't surprise us to see him finish as a top 5 fantasy RB this year.

Chargers | Mike Tolbert rushes for 58 yards, score    Mon Jan 2, 01:04 AM

San Diego Chargers RB Mike Tolbert carried nine times for 58 yards and a touchdown in the Week 17 game against the Oakland Raiders. He also added a 13-yard reception. Tolbert split carries with RB Curtis Brinkley, as Ryan Mathews (calf) was inactive. Tolbert finished with 490 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns, while also posting two receiving scores. Over the past two seasons, Tolbert has totaled 21 touchdowns (19 rushing, 2 receiving).

Chargers | Both running backs in question for Week 17    Thu Dec 29, 01:05 PM

San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner didn't sound too optimistic about the statuses of RBs Ryan Mathews (calf) and Mike Tolbert (hamstring) for the team's regular-season finale against the Oakland Raiders in Week 17 after they both missed practice Wednesday, Dec. 28. RB Curtis Brinkley took the majority of snaps in practice Wednesday.

Footballguys view: If Tolbert can't play then we'll see Mathews backed up by Brinkley. He's one of our favorite reserve RBs in the league because of his determination and leg drive when running the football.

Chargers | Mike Tolbert finds end zone in Week 9    Sun Nov 6, 10:37 PM

San Diego Chargers RB Mike Tolbert (hamstring) started in Week 9 against the Green Bay Packers and he finished with 83 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. He also added four catches for 59 yards. Tolbert returned after being inactive in Week 8 due to injury. He started with RB Ryan Mathews (groin) and Curtis Brinkley (concussion) inactive.

Footballguys view: Tolbert didn't back down and found room to run as both a ballcarrier and a receiver. Ryan Mathews should be back for the Thursday night tilt with the Raiders, but if he isn't, Tolbert will be a quality play.

Chargers | Curtis Brinkley practicing    Fri Nov 4, 03:28 PM

San Diego Chargers RB Curtis Brinkley (concussion) is participating in practice Friday, Nov. 4.

Chargers | Hopeful Curtis Brinkley will play    Fri Nov 4, 08:20 AM

San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner is hopeful RB Curtis Brinkley (concussion) will practice Friday, Nov. 4, and play in Week 9. Brinkley has not yet taken the required neurological exam that would clear him to return to practice.

Footballguys view: Ryan Mathews is unlikely to play, which means FB Mike Tolbert will start. If Brinkley can play it would be as a complementary back behind Tolbert. However, if Brinkley is unable to play then we'd see FB Jacob Hester get a few carries to complement Tolbert.

Chargers | Curtis Brinkley doesn't practice    Wed Nov 2, 09:00 PM

San Diego Chargers RB Curtis Brinkley (concussion) did not practice Wednesday, Nov. 2.

Footballguys view: Brinkley was one of the breakout RBs of week 8 in just about a quarter of play on Monday night, but he may not play this week. Still, he is a player to remember with both of the Chargers lead backs battling various injuries all season.

Chargers | Status for Curtis Brinkley won't be known until later    Tue Nov 1, 11:58 PM

The status for San Diego Chargers RB Curtis Brinkley (concussion) for the Week 9 game against the Green Bay Packers won't be known until later in the week.

Footballguys view: Brinkley could take the edge off of Mike Tolbert's value this week, and he is absolutely worth a pick up in all but shallow bench leagues because of the poor health this year of both of the top backs in San Diego, combined with the quality of his play on Monday night.

Chargers | Curtis Brinkley being evaluated for concussion    Tue Nov 1, 01:13 AM

Updating a previous report, San Diego Chargers RB Curtis Brinkley (concussion) is being evaluated for a possible concussion suffered in the Week 8 overtime loss against the Kansas City Chiefs Monday, Oct. 31.

Footballguys view: Brinkley was looking real good against the Chiefs before he was concussed. With all the injuries to the RB position the team could add Jordan Todman back to the active roster.

Chargers | Curtis Brinkley stars as injury replacement    Tue Nov 1, 01:03 AM

San Diego Chargers RB Curtis Brinkley had 10 carries for 43 yards and a touchdown in the Week 8 game against the Kansas City Chiefs Monday, Oct. 31, taking over late for the injured RB Ryan Mathews (groin). He also had a catch for a two-point conversion, and three receptions for 24 yards.

Footballguys view: Brinkley ran decisively with power and keyed what should have been a comeback win. He suffered a concussion in the game, so he may remain on the waiver wire, but with the durability record of the RBs ahead of him, we'll probably be talking about Brinkley again this year.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews leaves with groin injury    Mon Oct 31, 11:48 PM

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (groin) left the Week 8 game against the Kansas City Chiefs Monday, Oct. 31, due to a groin injury. Mathews is questionable to return. RB Curtis Brinkley is seeing time in his absence.

Footballguys view: Mathews had his leg twisted as he was tackled going out of bounds. He didn't return to the game and he might in trouble for the Green Bay game on a short week of rest.

Updating a previous item, San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner said RB Curtis Brinkley is expected to play in Week 8 in place of RB Mike Tolbert (hamstring).

Chargers | Plan to carry more RBs    Mon Oct 10, 06:20 PM

The San Diego Chargers will 'probably' carry four active running backs for their remaining games, according to head coach Norv Turner. RBs Ryan Mathews (calf) and Mike Tolbert (concussion) are expected back for the team's next game in Week 7. RB Jacob Hester is expected to be the third back, and the team will sign FB Frank Summers or RB Curtis Brinkley from the practice squad. RB Jordan Todman won't necessarily be the fourth running back; the team likes him but sees him as a contributor in the future.
