Saints | Drew Brees joking about comeback?    Mon May 16, 11:36 AM

Retired QB Drew Brees hinted that a comeback was possible while addressing his future on Sunday, May 15, following reports saying he was done as a broadcaster with NBC. 'I may work for NBC, I may play football again, I may focus on business and philanthropy, I may train for the pickleball tour, senior golf tour, coach my kids or all of the above. I'll let you know,' Brees tweeted. However, New Orleans Saints head coach Dennis Allen believes Brees wasn't serious about unretiring. 'I think the comment was made in jest,' Allen said.

Footballguys view: Allen also revealed that there have been no conversations about Brees coming out of retirement with the team. Brees is done playing football, but it seems like he was having a little fun on social networking. The Saints have QB Jameis Winston as their starter for the 2022 season.

Saints | Drew Brees entertained idea of unretiring    Sat Dec 25, 01:30 PM

The New Orleans Saints reached out to retired QB Drew Brees in an attempt to lure him out of retirement for a one-game stint, prior to the Saints signing QB Blake Bortles this week. Brees considered the idea, and even tested out his arm, but ultimately decided against the returning.

Footballguys view: With desperate times come desperate measures, including giving Brees a phone call. It would've been cool to see if happen, but it might have been more sad given the state of Brees arm when he decided to hang it up.

Saints | Drew Brees placed on retired list    Fri Jun 11, 04:56 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees was officially placed on the Reserve/Retired list Friday, June 11.

Footballguys view: It's going to be weird not seeing Brees in a Saints jersey but this was coming for some time. The Saints are going to see if Jameis Winston can be their starter with Taysom Hill competing for the top spot as well...and Hill can still be a gadget quarterback if he doesn't win the starting job.

Saints | Drew Brees announces retirement    Sun Mar 14, 04:57 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees announced his retirement from professional football.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. The Saints gave Brees the time he needed to make a decision about his future, but this was reported over a month ago. He will go into the Hall of Fame as a first-ballot inductee and go down as one of the most prolific passers in NFL history. The Saints have Taysom Hill under contract and there is some thought they could bring Jameis Winston back to compete for the starting job.

Saints | Drew Brees not done yet?    Sat Feb 27, 01:54 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees is featured in a recent video posted on Instragram by fitness trainer Todd Durkin in which Brees is pushing a weighted sled. At one point in the video, the phrase 'something must be brewing' is posted.

Footballguys view: The Saints would keep Brees around if he wants to keep playing. However, with Russell Wilson perhaps an option for the Saints that could change things. Most expected Brees to retire after this year, but he's not yet done that.

Saints | Drew Brees renegotiates deal    Sat Feb 6, 12:21 AM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees has agreed to renegotiate his contract to open up around $24 million in cap space for 2021, according to a source.

Footballguys view: A move made by Brees to help out the Saints with their cap situation. He was on the books for $25 million and now is set for the $1.1 million vet minimum. Brees is expected to announce his retirement in the near future. The Saints won't have much cap space to work with this offseason. If they can afford him, there's a chance they bring back Jameis Winston to compete with Taysom Hill to be the starter in 2021.

Saints | Drew Brees may make decision soon    Wed Feb 3, 03:30 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees has not made an announcement about his playing future, but head coach Sean Payton said he believes Brees may make an announcement in the next seven to 10 days.

Footballguys view: We should see Brees making a decision on his future sometime after the Super Bowl. Jay Glazer reported a couple of weeks ago that Brees was going to retire and nothing might have changed. The Saints need to make other plans at quarterback for the 2021 season just in case Brees calls it a career.

Saints | New Orleans to wait for Drew Brees' decision    Wed Jan 27, 02:52 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees has not made an official announcement about his playing future, and general manager Mickey Loomis said the team will wait for Brees' decision before they decide what to do at quarterback.

Footballguys view: It seems like Brees is leaning towards retirement. Before the Divisional Round of the playoffs, Jay Glazer reported that Brees would in fact hang up his cleats when the Saints were out of the playoffs. The team will give Brees time to make his announcement, but they should be ready to have a different starting quarterback in 2021.

Saints | Drew Brees dealt with numerous injuries    Thu Jan 21, 02:32 AM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees dealt with more injuries than were previously known as, according to a post from his wife on Instagram, the veteran played with a torn rotator cuff and a torn fascia in his foot. Those are in addition to the 11 broken ribs and collapsed lung that were previously reported.

Footballguys view: His game was slowing down, but Brees did not look like himself in the 2020 season. Brees is expected to retire during the offseason, though he has not made that official, yet.

Saints | Drew Brees doesn't reveal plans    Mon Jan 18, 01:19 AM

Updating a previous report, New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees did not officially announce his retirement following the team's loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, Jan. 17, instead indicating he'd take 'an opportunity to think about the season' and make his decision later.

Footballguys view: Jay Glazer had reported on Sunday that Brees was going to retire when the Saints season was done. They lost to the Buccaneers in the Divisional Round which means Brees may be retiring later this year. He'll take some time to come to a decision but things appear like he's leaning towards hanging his cleats up.

Saints | Drew Brees expected to retire    Sun Jan 10, 12:10 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees has not made an official statement about his playing future, but he is expected to retire once the season is over, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Footballguys view: The Saints are willing to be patient with Brees, and they'd welcome him back if he wants to play another season. However, things have been shaping up this season to make it seem like this is the last year for the future Hall of Fame quarterback. We'll see if the Saints can make a Super Bowl run one more time with Brees at the helm.

Saints | Drew Brees would be welcomed back    Fri Jan 8, 12:28 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees has yet to make any decisions about his future beyond this season, but Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said Friday, Jan. 8, that if Brees wants to return for another season, the Saints would welcome him back. 'When you have a quarterback that's -- I don't like to say at his age, because that doesn't sound right, but it's true -- it's been year to year for him for a while. It's up to him each year to determine: 'Do I want to play next year or not?' We give him his space, we give him time at the end of the season to determine that, and we'll see what happens next year. I'm not counting him out. It's going to be entirely up to him,' Loomis said.

Footballguys view: Many thought this would be the final year for Brees in the NFL. The Saints are wanting to make a run to the Super Bowl, and getting a victory in that game would likely seal his fate. Falling short of a Super Bowl would mean that Brees would have to take some time away to consider what he wants to do. Only time will tell if we see Brees next season.

Saints | New Orleans picks up road rout in Week 17    Sun Jan 3, 07:20 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees completed 22-of-32 passes for 201 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 17 against the Carolina Panthers. RB Ty Montgomery filled in for the missing RB Alvin Kamara (illness), going for a season-high 105 yards on 18 carries, while QB Taysom Hill rushed for 41 yards and a touchdown before leaving with an undisclosed injury in the fourth quarter. WR Emmanuel Sanders posted nine grabs for 63 yards and a touchdown, while TE Jared Cook ended with four catches, 43 yards and a touchdown on five targets. WR Austin Carr posted an 11-yard touchdown on his only grab, while DE Carl Granderson had two solo tackles, two sacks, two tackles for loss and two quarterback hits.

Footballguys view: Brees was solid as the Saints also benefited from some Teddy Bridgewater mistakes. Emmanuel Sanders got a 500,000 dollar incentive with his eighth catch of the night and Ty Montgomery showed he can still contribute on an NFL field. The Saints will host the Bears next week.

Saints | Drew Brees activated    Sat Dec 19, 04:49 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (ribs) was activated from the Reserve/Injured list Saturday, Dec. 19.

Footballguys view: The Saints were waiting for Brees to be 100 percent ready and they must think he is. He's going to wear protection like he always has for those injured ribs. Brees is a low-end QB1 for Fantasy GMs out there in week two of the fantasy playoffs.

Saints | Drew Brees given green light    Fri Dec 18, 09:50 AM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (ribs) will start in Week 15 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Footballguys view: Brees is beating most expectations of when he would return from his injuries, which adds some risk to profile against the Chiefs. Consider him a boom/bust QB1 and his presence an upgrade for Alvin Kamara, Emmanuel Sanders, and Jared Cook.

Saints | Drew Brees still could get Week 15 start?    Thu Dec 17, 02:12 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (ribs) reportedly has taken some first-team reps in practice this week and has a chance to draw the start in Week 15 against the Kansas City Chiefs. However, head coach Sean Payton said the team won't turn back to him until he's 'asymptomatic.'

Footballguys view: Brees is pushing to get back out there, but the team needs to be careful. They can make a Super Bowl run with Brees if he's healthy for the postseason. The same thing can't be said if Taysom Hill is starting. We should see Hill get the start against the Chiefs on Sunday.

If all goes well, he could be activated from the Reserve/Injured list to play as soon as Week 14 versus the Philadelphia Eagles, according to a source.

Saints | Drew Brees out at least two weeks    Wed Nov 18, 11:16 AM

Updating previous reports, New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (ribs) had no change in his status after a second opinion for cracked ribs and a collapsed lung. That means he's out at least two weeks, and they'll re-evaluate him.

Footballguys view: Brees it out of action for a couple of week at least with a painful injury. Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill will compete for the starting quarterback job while Brees is out. The Saints could use Winston as the starter while also then using Hill more at the position.

Saints | More on Drew Brees    Tue Nov 17, 12:37 PM

Updating previous reports, New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (ribs) is seeking a second opinion after tests revealed five definite fractures in his ribs, but a source mentioned the possibility of more.

Footballguys view: We are all waiting for more information on this situation. The Saints will determine whether Brees will go on Injured Reserve after those results. Then, we need to determine whether it's Jameis Winston or Taysom Hill who takes over as the starter -- or if they'll use both more with Brees out.

Saints | Drew Brees out indefinitely    Mon Nov 16, 02:49 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (ribs, lung) was diagnosed with a collapsed right lung as well as three rib fractures on his left side and two on his right side, according to a source. ESPN's Ed Werder notes 'it is uncertain' how much time Brees will be sidelined.

Footballguys view: The Saints are not going to rush Brees back as he deals with this serious injury. That means they'll turn things over to Jameis Winston while Brees recovers for a playoff run. Winston takes chances with the ball and looked shaky in relief duty on Sunday. Taysom Hill might get more work as a quarterback with Brees down as well.

Saints | Drew Brees could miss time    Mon Nov 16, 10:18 AM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (ribs) could miss time due to the injury to his ribs suffered in Week 10. For now, it's considered a rib contusion, but he'll have an MRI for cartilage damage Monday, Nov. 16.

Footballguys view: Rib injuries come down to pain tolerance. A bruised rib is painful, and this is something that could knock him out of action for a couple of weeks. Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill would fill in at the position with Brees down.
