Saints | Two WRs cut    Mon Aug 19, 05:20 PM

The New Orleans Saints released WRs Patrick Crayton and Steve Breaston Monday, Aug. 19.

Footballguys view: Well that didn't last long. The Saints just added Breaston and Crayton earlier this month. Breaston's knee injuries may have caught up to him as he couldn't make a positive impression in camp. The Saints will roll with rookie Kenny Stills (Oklahoma) and second-year pro Nick Toon as the primary WRs behind Marques Colston and Lance Moore.

Saints | Patrick Crayton signs    Mon Aug 12, 05:09 PM

The New Orleans Saints signed free-agent WR Patrick Crayton (Cowboys) to an undisclosed deal Monday, Aug. 12.

Footballguys view: Crayton was a street free agent last year and may not have much left in the tank. We'd be surprised if he even makes the final roster.

Saints | Kenny Stills looks to have edge for No. 3 WR job    Fri Aug 9, 04:26 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Kenny Stills appears to be the leading candidate for the No. 3 wide receiver job at this point. WR Steve Breaston likely will compete with Stills for the job, but Stills has a big edge.

Footballguys view: Stills has the speed to get on top of the defense in a hurry and stretch the field. He plays bigger than his size and does a good job of tracking deep passes. The WR3 in the Saints offense is somebody fantasy owners should know. As we get closer to the regular season if we see Stills cemented into this job then keep him in mind when considering lottery ticket WRs late in your draft.

Saints | Younger WRs could get more chances    Tue Aug 6, 12:27 AM

New Orleans WRs Saalim Hakim, Preston Parker, Kenny Stills, Andy Tanner and Nick Toon could each see bigger roles following the injury to WR Joe Morgan (knee), who is likely to miss at least a few weeks. However, the team values experience in the top three receiver roles, and it is believed veteran WR Steve Breaston will get a long look as the No. 3 first before any of the younger players.

Footballguys view: Toon is the player to watch here. If healthy Toon has good size and the wingspan to make plays in the red zone. Toon is not a quick twitch athlete and needs to be a more refined route runner if he wants to play up to his potential.

Saints | Steve Breaston could be used as No. 3 WR    Tue Aug 6, 12:26 AM

New Orleans Saints WR Steve Breaston could get a shot as the No. 3 wide receiver behind starting WRs Marques Colston (foot) and Lance Moore following the injury to WR Joe Morgan (knee).

Footballguys view: Breaston has the experience over other young WRs (like Nick Toon) on the Saints roster. He's not the same player he used to be but should be asked to run clear out routes deep to open things up underneath.

Saints | Steve Breaston agrees to terms    Mon Aug 5, 02:46 PM

The New Orleans Saints have agreed to terms with free-agent WR Steve Breaston (Chiefs) on a one-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Saints supposedly have really liked their young trio of Nick Toon, Kenny Stills, and Joseph Morgan, so Breaston may be no more than a camp body to help while Morgan and Marques Colston are sidelined. He isn't over the hill, but Breaston wasn't able to play himself into a big role in a weak Chiefs wide receiver corps last year.

NFL | Steve Breaston thinks he will play this season    Wed Jul 24, 02:20 PM

Free-agent WR Steve Breaston (Chiefs) said the offseason has allowed his knee to heal and believes he will be able to play for some team this season.

Footballguys view: You gotta believe right? Breaston has drawn a little interest on the open market but teams are concerned about his durability and haven't jumped at the chance to sign him so far.

Lions | Will work out two    Mon Jul 22, 09:26 PM

The Detroit Lions are scheduled to work out free-agent WRs Steve Breaston (Chiefs) and Chaz Schilens (Jets) this week.

Footballguys view: Breaston has gotten little interest since meeting with the Steelers and Browns earlier this year. Teams are concerned about his ability to stay healthy since he battled knee inflammation all last season. Schilens had a couple of workouts (Patriots, Titans) earlier this year too.

Steelers | Not interested in Steve Breaston    Thu Jun 20, 08:12 AM

The Pittsburgh Steelers are no longer interested in free-agent WR Steve Breaston (Chiefs).

Footballguys view: Some thought Breaston would be a good fit with the Steelers because of his previous working relationship with OC Todd Haley. It sounds like the Steelers are more than happy to enter the season with the current WR corps in place.

NFL | Steve Breaston does not need procedure    Thu Mar 7, 01:52 PM

Free-agent WR Steve Breaston (knee) has been advised that he does not need Regenokine treatment on his knee and that he is fine.

Footballguys view: Breaston will continue to look for work in the NFL. He worked out for the Steelers earlier this year and could always be signed by them before camp.

NFL | Steve Breaston considering procedure on knee    Sat Mar 2, 01:12 PM

Free-agent WR Steve Breaston (knee) is considering traveling to Germany to have a procedure on his knee to repair inflammation and early arthritic symptoms. The procedure includes taking blood out of his body, incubating the blood and injecting it in the injured part of the body.

Footballguys view: Breaston feels he can pass a physical and sign a one-year deal with the Steelers but wants longer-term solution for his knee problems.

Steelers | Will not sign Steve Breaston now    Fri Mar 1, 03:38 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers will not sign free-agent WR Steve Breaston (Chiefs) at this point but could consider it later in the offseason if he remains unsigned.

Footballguys view: It's a move that makes sense for both sides. The Steelers will need WR help when they lose Mike Wallace in free agency. Breaston has played under OC Todd Haley in both Arizona and Kansas City.

Steelers | Steve Breaston to visit    Thu Feb 28, 02:13 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers will bring in free-agent WR Steve Breaston (Chiefs) for a visit in the near future.

Footballguys view: This move would make sense for both sides. The Steelers are expected to let Mike Wallace walk in free agency and have a need for WR help. Breaston knows the Todd Haley system because he played under him in both Kansas City and Arizona.

Browns | Unlikely to sign Steve Breaston    Thu Feb 28, 02:12 PM

The Cleveland Browns are unlikely to sign WR Steve Breaston (Chiefs). Breaston visited with the Browns Thursday, Feb. 28.

Footballguys view: The Browns are looking for additional WR help and may make the move to add one via free agency. Most expect Breaston to sign with the Steelers where he can be reunited with OC Todd Haley.

Cowboys | Interested in Steve Breaston    Tue Feb 26, 09:07 AM

The Dallas Cowboys are interested in free-agent WR Steve Breaston (Chiefs).

Browns | Interested in Steve Breaston    Sun Feb 24, 01:04 PM

Steelers | Considered favorite for Steve Breaston    Sun Feb 24, 01:03 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers are considered the favorite to sign free-agent WR Steve Breaston (Chiefs).

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Breaston has played under current Steelers OC Todd Haley twice during his career. They were together in both Kansas City and Arizona. The Steelers will need additional WR depth as most expect them to lose Mike Wallace in free agency.

Steelers | Steve Breaston open to signing    Thu Feb 21, 10:04 PM

Free-agent WR Steve Breaston (Chiefs) said he would be willing to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason but said the most important thing will be signing with a team that will give him playing time.

Footballguys view: Going to the Steelers makes a lot of sense for Breaston. They're in the market for another WR and Breaston has played for OC Todd Haley in both Arizona and Kansas City.

Steelers | Will meet with Steve Breaston's agent    Thu Feb 21, 01:52 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers will talk with Eric Metz, agent for free-agent WR Steve Breaston (Chiefs), at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Breaston has played under OC Todd Haley in both Arizona and Kansas City. The Steelers are looking for WR help, especially after they're likely to let Mike Wallace walk in free agency.

Chargers | Could show interest in Steve Breaston    Wed Feb 20, 05:33 PM

The San Diego Chargers could show interest in free-agent WR Steve Breaston (Chiefs) this offseason because offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt coached him when both were with the Arizona Cardinals.

Footballguys view: Breaston would probably serve a reserve role as the fourth receiver if he joins San Diego, so we look for him to land elsewhere.

Lions | Could show interest in Steve Breaston    Wed Feb 20, 05:12 PM

The Detroit Lions could consider pursuing free-agent WR Steve Breaston (Chiefs) this offseason.

Footballguys view: The Steelers are considered the favorite to land Breaston because of his connection with offensive coordinator Todd Haley, but Breaston could be very productive in the Lions offense with Nate Burleson fading and Ryan Broyles no sure thing to be ready for week 1.

Steelers | Might be interested in Steve Breaston    Tue Feb 19, 09:39 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers do not have a lot of room under the salary cap to sign many free-agents, but recently released WR Steve Breaston (Chiefs) could be on their radar. Breaston was a favorite of offensive coordinator Todd Haley, who was previously the head coach with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Footballguys view: The Steelers need depth at wide receiver with Mike Wallace all but gone, and Breaston is a cheap option with ability and versatility. He sounds like a good fit for a cash-strapped team.

Chiefs | Two released    Tue Feb 19, 05:39 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs released TE Kevin Boss and WR Steve Breaston Tuesday, Feb. 19.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs just clearing up some cap space here. The team clears up $1.3MM by releasing Boss, and $2MM by parting ways with Breaston. Both veterans should be able to find a home somewhere else in 2013. The Steelers could be interested in Breaston as he would be reunited with Todd Haley. Breaston played under Haley in both Kansas City and Arizona.

Chiefs | Steve Breaston excited for change    Fri Feb 8, 09:38 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Steve Breaston said Friday, Feb. 8, that he is energized by the change from former head coach Romeo Crennel to new head coach Andy Reid. He sees a bright future for himself with the Chiefs. 'I've never gotten down on myself,' Breaston said. 'It's a new opportunity so things can change for me. It's all up to me and what I do on the field. I feel good about (Reid) being here. My big thing is to just show him my work. I feel like there's a clean slate right now.'

Footballguys view: Breaston should be able to have a bounce back year under the new regime. We like him as a sneaky WR4/WR5 for your fantasy squad in 2013. We'll feel better about the Chiefs passing game when they find their QB.

Chiefs | WRs not very productive    Mon Dec 17, 06:55 PM

Kansas City Chiefs wideouts were not very productive in a Week 15 shutout against the Oakland Raiders. WR Dexter McCluster had a career-high seven catches for only 59 yards. WRs Jamar Newsome and Devon Wylie caught just one pass with the most experience starter, WR Steve Breaston inactive because of head coach Romeo Crennel's decision. 'I'm still not sure why I'm not playing,' Breaston said. 'I'm past all that now. It just is what it is. There are other things for this team to worry about.' WR Jonathan Baldwin did not catch a single pass.

Footballguys view: It was a disappointing day for the Chiefs passing game. QB Brady Quinn attempted 32 passes on Sunday, but only threw for 136 yards. We find it incredibly frustrating that RB Jamaal Charles only got nine carries in a game the Chiefs could have won.

Chiefs | Uncertainty at WR    Thu Dec 13, 08:54 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Jonathan Baldwin will be one of the starters at wide receiver in Week 15 with WR Dwayne Bowe (ribs) out for the rest of the year. Head coach Romeo Crennel said WRs Steve Breaston and Devon Wylie could be starting opposite of Breaston, but Crennel is unsure which player that will be. 'We're going to work during the week and we're going to see who will give us the best chance in the game, and then those guys will be active,' Crennel said. Breaston has disappointed with only seven catches for 74 yards this, but he is the receiver with the most experience on the current roster. He has been inactive for four of the last five games, and Crennel indicated that Breaston doesn't seem to have a strong grasp of the offense. WR Dexter McCluster has the most catches on roster in his career other than Breaston, with 108.

Footballguys view: Uncertainty is not something that gives fantasy owners confidence. We like the matchup against the Raiders in week 15, but can't recommend Baldwin as anything more than a desperation flex play.

Chiefs | Steve Breaston in the doghouse     Thu Nov 15, 08:24 AM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Steve Breaston was inactive for the team's Week 10 game, and head coach Romeo Crennel said that is because the team wants to take a look at other players. 'What happened a little bit is that he hasn't made as many plays,' Crennel said. 'So this past game he took a backseat so that we could get a younger player up to see what the younger player could do.' Rookie WR Devon Wylie took Breaston's place; however, he played six snaps and was not targeted on a pass. Crennel said there are other issues as well regarding Breaston. 'He's a veteran player, and some young guys might have a little more quickness and a little bit more speed. And if you as a coach want to take a look at that speed, you have to make a move. So I did.'

Footballguys view: We like Wylie's dynasty upside, but the Chiefs need to get a better QB before their passing game takes off.

He admits that he has gained some chemistry with QB Matt Cassel. 'It's always about developing that trust with your quarterback,' Breaston said. 'It doesn't just happen overnight. I'm the new guy here. Coach Haley knows me, but not everybody else does. I just think it's a matter of me continuing to be a reliable option for Matt.'
