Jaguars | Blake Bortles finishes with 155 yards    Sun Sep 23, 04:47 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles went 21-for-34 for 155 yards against the Tennessee Titans in Week 3. He also rushed for 27 yards on five carries during the game.

Footballguys view: One week after the best game of his career, Bortles can't even lead his team to a touchdown. The Titans gave Bortles a lot of trouble last year, and it appears that even with a new coaching staff, they have his number. The Jets underrated defense is up next week, so we'll remain in limbo with trusting the Jaguars offense.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles has banner day against Patriots    Mon Sep 17, 02:33 AM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles finished 29-of-45 for 377 yards, four touchdowns and an interception in Week 2 versus the New England Patriots. He added six carries for 35 yards.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles has decent outing    Sun Sep 9, 05:13 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles went 18-for-33 for 176 yards, one touchdown and one interception against the New York Giants in Week 1. He also rushed for 42 yards on four carries during the game.

Footballguys view: Bortles didn't do much, but he wasn't asked to do much even with Leonard Fournette out. The defense provided the margin of victory and Bortles at least showed some running ability to up his weekly floor. He'll be a possible streamer against the Patriots next week.

Jaguars | Two picks for Blake Bortles    Sat Aug 25, 09:46 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles completed 17 of his 23 passes for 204 yards and two interceptions against the Atlanta Falcons in the preseason Saturday, Aug. 25.

Footballguys view: Bortles has had a rough preseason, but not as bad as last year. He's still set up to be a matchup streaming quarterback, although losing Marqise Lee won't help his cause.

Jaguars | More big plays from Blake Bortles?    Wed Jul 4, 07:33 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles has earned the trust of offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, and Hackett said Bortles' improved decision making will allow him to be 'a lot more aggressive' with his play calling.

Footballguys view: What Hackett is saying, but we're not sure who Bortles is throwing to. At this point we don't recommend him as more than a low-end QB2.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles feeling more comfortable    Sun Jun 24, 02:44 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles recently told The Orlando Sentinel he feels like he is 'owning the offense' and has a better understanding of it this season after admitting he was working at more of an 'elementary level' at the start of last season.

Footballguys view: The Jaguars are built to make a Super Bowl run...if Bortles can get them over the top. They fell just short last year, losing to the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game where Bortles played a good game with 293 passing yards and a touchdown. The defense can take them far, but a more comfortable Bortles should help the offense play with more efficiency and effectiveness. The new weapons around Bortles should help him too. From a fantasy perspective, Bortles is a bye-week filler and QB3 who is going undrafted in most 12-team leagues.

Jaguars | Cody Kessler expected to be No. 2 quarterback    Sun Jun 24, 10:28 AM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Cody Kessler is expected to enter the regular season as the backup to QB Blake Bortles. QB Tanner Lee, the club's seventh-round draft selection, is likely to begin the year on the practice squad, in the opinion of The Florida Times-Union's John Reid.

Footballguys view: Back in March, the Jaguars acquired Kessler from the Browns in exchange for a conditional 2019 seventh-round pick. Kessler takes the place of long-time backup Chad Henne, and his starting experience gives him an edge over the rookie Lee. The Jaguars are a run-heavy team with QB Blake Bortles starting, and they'd be even more that way if Kessler was thrust into the lineup due to injury.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles inspiring confidence    Fri Jun 22, 12:34 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles displayed improved accuracy and impressive chemistry with his new weapons, and he also seemed very comfortable with his improved throwing motion after spending even more time working on it in California, according to Mike Kaye of FirstCoastNews.com.

Footballguys view: Bortles came on at the end of the year, and will gain a tight end and downfield receiver that he is showing good chemistry with so far. He's basically free in drafts and opens with the Giants, New England, and Tennessee.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles relaxed at practice    Sat Jun 2, 11:46 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles has been 'relaxed' at OTAs because he no longer needs to think about the plays or his footwork, according to offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett.

Footballguys view: Perhaps relaxed is the wrong word to use, but we get what Hackett is trying to say. Bortles wants to put his mechanical issues behind him so he can run the offense seamlessly without putting too much thought into his physical play. It sounds like he's on that track, but fantasy owners only see Bortles as a low-end QB2.

Jaguars | Keelan Cole staying relevant    Fri May 25, 03:27 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Keelan Cole made 'several impressive catches' Friday, May 25, according to Mike Kaye of First Coast News. Kaye believes this is evidence QB Blake Bortles has built on the chemistry he showed with Cole last season.

Footballguys view: Cole is a big-play receiver who can go long and gather in the rock. Last year, the undrafted rookie from Kentucky Wesleyan snared 42 passes for 748 yards and three touchdowns. As part of the top trio of pass-catchers in Jacksonville, we could see Cole duplicate those numbers in 2018.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles no longer in pain    Tue Mar 27, 01:14 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles is training without pain and has 'no limitations' after undergoing wrist surgery this offseason.

Footballguys view: The Jaguars committed to Bortles with a three-year extension earlier this offseason. They are in a Super Bowl window and will see if they can get past the AFC Championship in 2018.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles in rare company    Mon Feb 26, 07:00 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles has thrown for 90 career passing touchdowns and just under 15,000 passing yards. Former NFL QBs Peyton Manning, Dan Marino and Drew Bledsoe and Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford are the only quarterbacks in NFL history to achieve those numbers before turning 26 years old. Bortles turns 26 in April.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles receives new deal    Sat Feb 24, 07:30 PM

Updating a previous report, Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles agreed to a new three-year contract with the Jaguars Saturday, Feb. 24, worth $54 million, according to a source. The deal includes $26 million in guaranteed money and could be worth as much as $66.5 million with incentives.

Footballguys view: Bortles cap number in 2018 was reduced down to ten million, which will free up space to potentially bring back Allen Robinson, Marqise Lee, or Aaron Colvin. The team is really only committed to him financially through 2019, and releasing him after this season wouldn't be crippling. This doesn't foreclose them from taking a quarterback early in this year's draft or signing a backup with starter potential in free agency.

Jaguars | Replacement for Blake Bortles?    Fri Feb 23, 09:47 PM

The Jacksonville Jaguars are actively pursuing upgrades to QB Blake Bortles, according to a league source.

Footballguys view: The Jaguars are one quarterback away from a team that could contend for the Super Bowl. With an upgrade at the position they should be seen as a favorite in the AFC. We'll see if they jump in the frenzy around Kirk Cousins or decide to go in a different direction this offseason.

Jaguars | Competition for Blake Bortles?    Sun Feb 11, 10:24 PM

The Jacksonville Jaguars could select a quarterback in the first or second round of the 2018 NFL Draft to provide competition for QB Blake Bortles, according Mike DiRocco of ESPN.com.

Footballguys view: The Jaguars picked up Bortles fifth-year option but it doesn't mean he's set as the starter or any sort of long-term answer at the position. In fact, Bortles is arguably the weakest link on the team. In the first or second round, the Jaguars may be able to find some player like Lamar Jackson (Louisville) or Mason Rudolph (Oklahoma State).

Jaguars | Blake Bortles expected to stay     Tue Jan 30, 04:22 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles (wrist) is expected to remain with the Jaguars despite recently undergoing surgery on his injured wrist, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Rapoport said the plan all along has been for Bortles to return as starter.

Footballguys view: That's a good story now that they don't really have a choice unless his wrist heals by mid March. It is possible that they had always planned on bringing Bortles back, but the Jaguars would only be committed for one year and could still draft a quarterback this year as a possible replacement in 2019.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles undergoes wrist surgery    Mon Jan 29, 11:56 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles (wrist) had surgery on his right wrist Friday, Jan. 26, for a condition that had bothered him since December of 2016, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Bortles actually played better as the season went on, save for a poor wild card performance against the Bills. This development could cause his 19 million dollar fifth year guarantee to lock in if he is still injured in early March when the new league year starts.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles wants to stay    Mon Jan 22, 05:47 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles said he would be 'thrilled' to remain with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The fourth-year quarterback will be an impending free agent in 2019.

Footballguys view: The Jaguars didn't pick up his fifth-year option last year, and that's why Bortles is set to hit the open market. The team played at an incredibly high level this year but in crunch time against the Patriots, Bortles couldn't find a way to get it done. We'll see if they go to a guy like Alex Smith via trade or Kirk Cousins via free agency this offseason.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles falls short of Super Bowl    Sun Jan 21, 06:33 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles completed 23-of-36 passes for 293 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in the AFC Championship Game against the New England Patriots on Sunday, Jan. 21.

Footballguys view: Bortles was brilliant early, but couldn't find enough plays in the fourth quarter to put the game away or come back late once the Patriots recaptured the lead. The Jaguars will have a decision to make about whether to pay Bortles like a starter in an improved, but still uneven at times fourth season. Chances are he'll start for them next season.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles not on injury report    Fri Jan 19, 04:31 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles (wrist) fully participated in practice Friday, Jan. 19, and is not on the injury report for the AFC Championship game.

Footballguys view: Bortles is trending the right way with this injury and with his play on the field. He rushed for more yards than he passed for in the Wild Card Round against the Bills, but in the Divisional Round against the Steelers Bortles had 214 yards passing, one touchdown with zero turnovers and zero sacks taken. He'll need top play an efficient game against the Patriots in order to advance to the Super Bowl.

Jaguars | | Blake Bortles practices Thursday    Thu Jan 18, 05:01 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles (wrist) fully participated in practice Thursday, Jan. 18.

Footballguys view: Bortles is one of the four choices you have, yes he sure is. As for one of the better choices? Not so much. We believe we can trust Case Keenum and Tom Brady more than a guy who has been prone to bad moments and will have most of his offense run through the backfield.

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles completed 14 of his 26 pass attempts for 214 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in the AFC Divisional Round playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, Jan. 14. He also ran five times for 35 yards.

Footballguys view: Bortles didn't make any big mistakes and helped the Jaguars get off to a great start with a pass-first approach to open the game. He'll be asked to be steady, if unspectacular next week at Foxboro.

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles (wrist) fully participated in practice Friday, Jan. 12, and is not on the injury report for the Divisional Round playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Footballguys view: Bortles rushed for more yards than he passed in the Wild Card game against the Bills. That will have to be altered drastically if the Jaguars get into a shootout with the Steelers on Sunday. Expect the team to get RB Leonard Fournette the ball early and often.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles takes part in practice    Thu Jan 11, 03:22 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles (wrist) fully participated in practice Thursday, Jan. 11.

Footballguys view: Bortles may compare his popularity woes with those of LeBron James, but we might take James over him at fantasy quarterback most weeks. OK, maybe not, but we don't trust Bortles, nor do the Jaguars, which is why he won't throw much unless Jacksonville is in real trouble. If they are to beat Pittsburch in Pittsburgh, it will be on the ground, not with Bortles throwing it. Avoid him this week.

Jaguars | Full practice for Blake Bortles    Wed Jan 10, 04:47 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles (wrist) was a full participant in practice Wednesday, Jan. 10.

Footballguys view: Bortles ran for more yards than he passed for in the Wild Card game last weekend. He'll need to reverse that if the team gets into a shootout on the road against the Steelers on Sunday.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles more successful with legs    Sun Jan 7, 04:20 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles rushed for 88 yards on 10 carries against the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card playoff game Sunday, Jan. 7. He also went 12-for-23 for 87 yards and one touchdown during the game.

Footballguys view: It was a windy day in Jacksonville, and Bortles did not look good even on simple throws. However, his game seemed to settle down once he started running. They'll need a better performance from Bortles if they get into an offensive shootout against the Steelers in the Divisional Round.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles fully practices    Thu Jan 4, 03:45 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles (wrist) fully participated in practice Thursday, Jan. 4.

Footballguys view: Naturally there are very few options at quarterback during Wild Card weekend, but Bortles still wouldn't be our first choice. He might get some garbage yards late, but the Jaguars are likely to keep things conservative and have the offense revolve around Leonard Fournette and the ground game.

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles (wrist) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Jan. 3.

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles (wrist) was a full participant in practice Friday, Dec. 29, and he has been removed from the Week 17 injury report.

Footballguys view: Bortles has been on fire the last portion of this season, despite the three picks last week. We think he should be productive against Tennessee but it's not an important game for Jacksonville and he may not stay in the game. That keeps him as a nice QB2 play, but limits his upside.
