NFL | Blake Bortles retires    Wed Oct 5, 09:23 AM

Former Jacksonville Jaguars and Los Angeles Rams QB Blake Bortles announced his retirement Wednesday, Oct. 5.

Footballguys view: The no.3 pick in the 2014 NFL draft, Bortles will be remembered as a bust but he did have flashes as a pro. He was one game away from the Super Bowl as the quarterback of the Jaguars back in 2017, and Bortles made WR Allen Robinson a fantasy favorite back in 2015.

Saints | Blake Bortles released    Tue Apr 5, 12:03 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Blake Bortles requested and received his release Tuesday, April 5.

Footballguys view: There's not much there for Bortles, especially with Jameis Winston as the starter and Andy Dalton as his backup. Taysom Hill is going to concentrate on tight end, but Bortles didn't want to be a camp arm third-string player who gets cut at some point this summer. We'll see if some team adds him in the near future.

Packers | Blake Bortles added to roster    Sat Nov 6, 02:44 PM

Green Bay Packers QB Blake Bortles on Saturday, Nov. 6, was promoted to the Week 9 roster from the practice squad.

Footballguys view: The Packers have Jordan Love as their starting quarterback this week against the Chiefs. Behind him, we'll see Bortles as the primary backup because both Aaron Rodgers and Kurt Benkert are on the COVID list.

Free-agent QB Blake Bortles (Packers) is flying to Green Bay and is expected to join the Green Bay Packers' practice squad.

Seahawks | Blake Bortles visiting Seattle    Tue Oct 12, 05:02 PM

Free-agent QB Blake Bortles (Packers) worked out for the Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday, Oct. 12.

Footballguys view: Geno Smith is the team's starter, but the Seahawks will be kicking the tires on free agent quarterbacks. Bortles was with the Broncos for most of the 2020 season but signed with the Packers earlier this year. He didn't even make it to training camp in Green Bay and has been looking for work since then.

Packers | Blake Bortles has deal with Green Bay    Wed May 12, 05:35 PM

Updating a previous story, free-agent QB Blake Bortles (Rams) is signing a one-year deal with the Green Bay Packers, according to a source Wednesday, May 12. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: Bortles has plenty of starting experience and gives them veteran depth behind Jordan Love. Many reporters around the team think Love may not be ready (again) to be the primary backup, and that job could go to Bortles this year. Oh yeah, there's that whole Aaron Rodgers thing too. Stay tuned.

Denver Broncos QB Blake Bortles was officially signed off the practice squad by the Los Angeles Rams on Tuesday, Dec. 29. OT Bobby Evans was activated from the Reserve/COVID-19 list, while RB Darrell Henderson (ankle) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list.

Footballguys view: With Jared Goff (thumb) banged up, the Rams needed more depth. Bortles played with the Rams in 2019 so he's familiar with the system. John Wolford will get the start for the Rams in Week 17.

Broncos | Denver gets all of its QBs back    Tue Dec 1, 04:31 PM

Denver Broncos QBs Drew Lock, Brett Rypien and Blake Bortles were activated from the Reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday, Dec. 1.

Footballguys view: The Broncos should have Drew Lock on the field as their starter on Sunday night against the Chiefs. There could be some discipline for Lock from the team or the league but we doubt that includes a benching. We could see fines for the quarterback room after they failed to follow COVID protocol and all had to miss the game against the Saints in Week 12.

Broncos | DEN QBs cleared    Tue Dec 1, 11:14 AM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock, QB Brett Rypien and QB Blake Bortles tested negative Tuesday, Dec. 1, for COVID-19 and have cleared protocols.

Footballguys view: Lock should be under center for the Broncos on Sunday night against the Chiefs in Week 13. There might be some discipline from the team or the league since this quarterback room violated COVID protocols last week and were all unavailable to play in Week 12. Lock is running out of time to prove himself as a potential franchise quarterback for the Broncos. Right now, Lock is just trying to prove that he can be adequate consistently.

Broncos | Denver QBs ruled ineligible    Sat Nov 28, 06:05 PM

Updating a previous story, Denver Broncos QBs Drew Lock, Brett Rypien and Blake Bortles have been ruled ineligible for the game Sunday, Nov. 29, against the New Orleans Saints due to COVID-19 contact tracing, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Absolutely huge news for the Broncos here. They are not going to forfeit this game but have to move forward with RB Royce Freeman (their emergency quarterback) as the starter. They can run Wildcat formation with RBs Melvin Gordon and Phillip Lindsay if they choose. Also, it has been suggested that practice squad WR Kendall Hinton (a three-year starting QB at Wake Forest) could step into the role. Stay tuned.

Broncos | Blake Bortles released by Denver    Sat Oct 17, 01:55 PM

Denver Broncos QB Blake Bortles was released Saturday, Oct. 17.

Broncos | Blake Bortles headed to Broncos    Tue Sep 22, 09:08 AM

Free-agent QB Blake Bortles (Rams) is signing a one-year deal with the Denver Broncos this week. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Broncos almost signed Bortles last year. Bortles could be ready for Sunday against the Buccaneers as the primary backup to starter Jeff Driskel. Neither is a great option while Drew Lock is down for a month or so. Do not be surprised if Bortles ends up winning the starting job over Driskel at some point. Lock cannot get back fast enough.

Rams | LAR could look at veteran QBs    Sun Jul 5, 02:13 PM

Free-agent QB Blake Bortles (Rams) and QB Matt Moore (Chiefs) could be options for the Los Angeles Rams if the team wants a veteran backup quarterback, in the opinion of RamsWire's Cameron DaSilva.

Footballguys view: Right now John Wolford, Bryce Perkins and Josh Love are competing to back up Jared Goff. That sounds like a disaster in the making. Bortles was the backup last year and wouldn't have to be brought up to speed on the offense, so look for him to get signed if the team doesn't like what they see in the backup trio when camp opens.

Rams | Blake Bortles has options    Tue Mar 17, 02:28 PM

Los Angeles Rams impending free-agent QB Blake Bortles is weighing several options, according to a source Tuesday, March 17. One option reportedly is to return to the Rams.

Footballguys view: Bortles getting a ton of interest is a bit surprising. Maybe it's not a ton, but some teams might want him as a veteran backup behind a young starter. We think staying with the Rams might be the best thing for him. Stay tuned.

Rams | Blake Bortles terms    Wed Mar 20, 09:19 AM

Updating previous reports, Los Angeles Rams QB Blake Bortles received a one-year, $1 million deal from the Rams, which will be subtracted from the $6.5 million the Jacksonville Jaguars owe him.

Footballguys view: Bortles gets a fresh start with Sean McVay and the Rams. He's the backup to Jared Goff and won't see any playing time unless Goff is injured. We'll see if Bortles can play better with a better offensive coach to learn from.

Rams | Blake Bortles joins Rams    Mon Mar 18, 07:56 PM

Free-agent QB Blake Bortles (Jaguars) agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Rams Monday, March 18. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Rams needed a backup quarterback to Jared Goff since Sean Mannion was a free agent. This is an interesting destination for Bortles, a first-round disappointment of the Jaguars. If he can't make plays with head coach Sean McVay then he's unlikely to make plays anywhere.

Rams | Blake Bortles to visit Rams    Fri Mar 15, 10:10 PM

Free-agent QB Blake Bortles (Jaguars) will visit the Los Angeles Rams Monday, March 18, according to a team source.

Footballguys view: The Rams are looking for backup help behind Jared Goff. Last year's top reserve, Sean Mannion, is a free agent and they only have Brandon Allen on the roster behind Goff at this time. Bortles had mostly bad times with the Jaguars but he has flashed a bit here and there. His best spot is as a backup.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles due bonus March 17    Fri Mar 8, 01:10 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles is expected to released before March 17 when he is due a $1 million roster bonus, in the opinion of a team beat writer.

Footballguys view: Jacksonville cleared up plenty of cap space for Nick Foles on Friday, releasing several players but not Bortles...yet. Cutting Bortles would create another $4.5 million in salary cap space.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles safe for now    Fri Mar 8, 12:42 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles will remain with the team for now, a source said Friday, March 8, but that could change next week if the Jaguars land a free-agent quarterback.

Footballguys view: Bortles has a cap hit of $21 million in 2019 with a whopping $16.5 million in dead money. The Jaguars would take a big cap hit by releasing Bortles but it seems unlikely they would keep him if they can get a contract done with free agent quarterback Nick Foles.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles doesn't think he'll be back    Wed Jan 2, 08:41 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles believes he'll be elsewhere in 2019, saying, 'I don't think I'll be back next year. Being honest, I envision I'll be somewhere else next year.' It's also possible the Jaguars may delay cutting him until 2020, when his dead cap hit would be just $5 million instead of $16.5 million this offseason.

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles 15-for-28 for 107 yards, zero touchdowns and one interception against the Houston Texans in Week 17. He also rushed for 15 yards on four carries during the game.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles to start finale    Wed Dec 26, 12:37 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles will start the season finale against the Houston Texans in Week 17.

Footballguys view: The Jaguars travel to play against the Texans in Week 17. Bortles replaces Cody Kessler as the team's starter after Kessler replaced him a few weeks ago. It's not a great option for Fantasy GMs playing in Week 17, even in 2-QB streaming formats.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles unlikely to return in 2019    Sat Dec 8, 01:31 AM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles is expected to be released following the season, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Footballguys view: Bortles should catch on elsewhere as a backup. The Jaguars were able to open up cap room by signing him to an extension last year, but they will carry 16.5 million in dead cap next year as they guaranteed part of his 2019 salary and spread out the 15 million dollar signing bonus hit over the duration of the three-year contract.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles benched    Mon Nov 26, 02:42 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles has been benched in favor of Cody Kessler, according to head coach Doug Marrone.

Footballguys view: So long as Kessler is healthy, he should be the starter for the rest of the regular season. After making it to the AFC Championship last year, the Jaguars have fallen apart and the play of their quarterback is largely to blame. They don't ask him to do much and Bortles has still been ineffective and mostly careless with the football. Back in February of this year, Bortles signed a three-year extension with $26.5 million guaranteed. There's still $16.5 million in dead money next year according to Spotrac.com.
