49ers | Chris Borland could be done for the year Tue Dec 16, 05:55 PM
San Francisco 49ers LB Chris Borland (ankle) may not play again this season, according to defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Fangio said Borland being able to play before the season ended 'would be a stretch right now.'
Footballguys view: Ouch. The rookie linebacker had been coming through in a big way for the 49ers defense. Borland always had a nose for the football in college at Wisconsin, but he proved as a rookie that he could cover in the pros as well. |

49ers | Chris Borland nursing ankle injury Sun Dec 14, 06:11 PM
San Francisco 49ers LB Chris Borland (ankle) left the Week 15 game against the Seattle Seahawks due to an ankle injury. He checked back into the lineup, but then left again.
Footballguys view: Borland has been an IDP stud down the stretch, but it looks like he can't help IDP teams any more today. Nick Moody replaced him in the lineup. |

49ers | Patrick Willis to have MRI Tue Oct 14, 12:14 PM
San Francisco 49ers LB Patrick Willis (toe) will undergo an MRI exam to determine the severity of the toe injury he suffered in Week 6 Monday, Oct. 13, according to sources. Willis was wearing a walking boot on his left foot and said X-rays were taken.
Footballguys view: He was replaced in the MNF game by rookie LB Chris Borland. We like what the rookie showed in coverage, but he's an obvious downgrade from what Willis brings to the field. |

49ers | Could use multiple LBs to replace NaVorro Bowman Fri Jul 25, 08:15 PM
The San Francisco 49ers could use one inside linebacker in the base defense and another in the nickel defense while LB NaVorro Bowman (knee) is out of the lineup, according to defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. LB Michael Wilhoite has been working with the starting defense during training camp, but LB Chris Borland could also compete for the starting job.

49ers | Chris Borland looking forward to competing Fri Jul 4, 11:48 PM
San Francisco 49ers LB Chris Borland said he understands that LB Michael Wilhoite is the leading candidate for the starting inside linebacker job that will replace LB NaVorro Bowman (knee) but is looking forward to competing with Wilhoite during training camp.
Footballguys view: Don't count the rookie out. Borland is a two-down thumper with a great nose for the ball. He scrapes and flows to the ball quickly, and he arrives at the ball-carrier with natural violence. He's shown improved ability in coverage, and Borland could certainly be the starter (while Bowman is out) for the 49ers in Week 1. |

49ers | Chris Borland could receive early playing time Mon Jun 23, 02:22 PM
San Francisco 49ers LB Chris Borland could receive playing time early in the season because of LB NaVorro Bowman's (knee) injury.
Footballguys view: Borland is the type of player who could be relied on early as a pro. He's a two-down thumper who arrives at the ball swiftly. He rarely takes false steps and finds a way to put himself into great position to make a play. Borland will have to come off the field in passing downs because of his struggles in coverage. |

49ers | Michael Wilhoite may have edge for ILB job Fri May 23, 08:45 PM
San Francisco 49ers LB Michael Wilhoite may be the leading candidate to start at inside linebacker while LB NaVorro Bowman (knee) is sidelined, because he has been in defensive coordinator Vic Fangio's system for two years. Wilhoite is expected to compete with LBs Nick Moody, Chris Borland and Shayne Skov for the job.
Footballguys view: If Borland plays like he did in college, then he might be difficult to beat out for the job. The team's third-round pick has a nose for the ball and arrives at the ball-carrier with natural violence. Borland diagnoses plays quickly as they unfold in front of him, and he does a good job of avoiding blockers to get to the point of the play. |

49ers | Sign Chris Borland Thu May 22, 08:09 PM
The San Francisco 49ers have signed third-round draft choice LB Chris Borland to a four-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Borland is a fine fit for the 49ers defense. He's a two-down thumper who diagnoses quickly and can make plays against the run. At the Senior Bowl earlier this year Borland looked good athleticism in space. However, on film Borland struggled in coverage. |

NFL | Chris Borland off a draft board Wed Apr 30, 01:57 PM
Wisconsin LB Chris Borland has been taken off one NFL team's board because they believe he will need another surgery on his left shoulder, according to an executive involved with the team. 'The issue with his shoulder is that he had a repair and the screw has kind of slid down into the joint,' the executive said. 'So there's a feeling that he's going to have to have another surgery. It would be his third one.' Borland injured his left shoulder in 2009 and 2010 and underwent right shoulder surgery in 2010.
Footballguys view: Borland reminds many in the scouting community of former Dolphins/Cowboys LB Zach Thomas. He can find the ball quickly, and he arrives at the ball with violent force. Borland is a two-down thumper who will have to come off the field on passing downs. |

The Cleveland Browns had informal talks with Wisconsin LB Chris Borland at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Ravens | Meeting with two at combine Tue Feb 25, 02:42 AM
The Baltimore Ravens have met with Wisconsin LB Chris Borland at the NFL Scouting Combine, as well as WR Jordan Matthews (Vanderbilt).
Footballguys view: The Ravens are always on the lookout for defensive studs. Borland reminds many in the scouting community of former Dolphins linebacker Zach Thomas. Matthews, the cousin of Jerry Rice, knows how to run crisp routes. He has strong hands and good concentration too. Most scouts compare his skill set to that of Eric Decker (Broncos). |
