NFL | Jahvid Best's lawsuit thrown out    Fri Jun 6, 12:03 PM

Former Detroit Lions RB Jahvid Best's civil lawsuit against the NFL and helmet makers Riddell and Easton-Bell Sports has been thrown out. The case against the league was dismissed on May 6 due to a non-service dismissal without prejudice. It means that Best likely didn't serve the defendants in a defined period of time. He can refile the suit, but it's unclear if he will.

Footballguys view: Best was one of the first high profile players to have his career ended prematurely by concussions. The league and NFLPA are watching every one of these cases closely. It sounds like this one was thrown out on a procedural issue, so it's probably not over yet.

NFL | Jahvid Best suing league    Wed Jan 29, 01:35 PM

Former Detroit Lions RB Jahvid Best is suing the NFL because he suffered multiple concussions during his career. Best is also suing the helmet company Riddell.

Footballguys view: This can't end well for Best, who had concussion issues coming into the league. It's hard to imagine he wasn't well aware before he put on the shield. The suit against Riddell is also a bit hard to swallow given the warnings on the helmet. On top of everything else, it's sad because the Lion treated Best very well once it became clear he was done, keeping him on so he could get another year towards pension.

Lions | Jahvid Best cut    Wed Jul 17, 04:08 PM

The Detroit Lions have released RB Jahvid Best.

Footballguys view: This has been in the works for some time. Best hasn't played since October of 2011 when he suffered his last concussion. The Lions kept him on the roster as he continued to suffer from concussion symptoms. The story of Best will always read "what might have been?" He flashed incredible ability during his short time in the NFL but failed to stay healthy after multiple concussions.

Lions | Might keep Jahvid Best on PUP    Fri Mar 22, 09:17 PM

Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew hasn't given up on RB Jahvid Best (concussion) despite a career-threatening concussion in 2011, and an entire season spent on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list in 2012. 'We could put him back on PUP and carry him through the season if we wanted to,' Mayhew said Friday, March 22. 'We'll see what happens.'

Footballguys view: The tale of Best could always read 'what might have been.' We don't think he'll ever see the football field again, and it's a shame given the potential he flashed in college and briefly with the Lions.

Lions | Looking to add a RB    Thu Jan 10, 09:37 AM

The Detroit Lions had just four runs of 20-plus yards this season, tied for fewest in the NFL. RB Jahvid Best (concussion) would have helped in that area, but he could not get activated due to a concussion. As a result, general manager Martin Mayhew said the team will look for a running back with speed and big-play ability. 'We need that shifty back that can come in and be a change-of-pace guy and catch passes out of the backfield,' Mayhew said. 'A guy that can run routes and get one-on-one and beat a linebacker. That's what Jahvid gave us, a guy with some juice and some elusiveness.'

Footballguys view: The Lions need help at the position behind Mikel Leshoure. The RB class isn't that strong this season, but they could find value in the mid-rounds. A guy like Andre Ellington (Clemson) in the 2nd round, or Kenjon Barner (Oregon) in the 4th round would make a lot of sense.

Lions | Jahvid Best not ready to give up yet    Tue Nov 27, 09:31 PM

Detroit Lions RB Jahvid Best (concussion) said Tuesday, Nov. 27, that team doctors haven't ruled out his potentially resuming his playing career at some point. 'They told me I can't say this season, but they didn't shut the door (on resuming later),' Best said.

Footballguys view: We love his attitude here, but worry he may never be able to play football again. He certainly isn't going to be able to live up to the potential he had coming out of college. In super deep dynasty leagues he's worth taking a flier on.

Lions | No word on Jahvid Best's long-term status    Fri Nov 2, 07:35 PM

Detroit Lions RB Jahvid Best (concussion) won't play this season after the team opted to keep him on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list. 'There has been subsequent evaluation and consultation regarding Jahvid since our last update (October 15),' general manager Martin Mayhew said. 'As has been the case throughout, we have deferred to the medical experts and support their current recommendation that Jahvid not return to the field this season.' Mayhew did not address Best's long-term future, but the team has clearly missed his speed and versatility in the backfield. The Lions may have to make a decision on his future with them before the NFL Draft or free-agent period after this season.

Detroit Lions RB Jahvid Best (concussion) did not pass his neurological tests last week, meaning he won't be allowed to return to the team this year. Updating a previous report, the Detroit Lions are hopeful that RB Jahvid Best (concussion) will be able to return to the field at some point. The team announced a press release after they determined that he will not be coming off the Physically Unable to Perform list this week. 'After today's consultation with medical experts, including representatives from our medical and training staffs, it has been determined that Jahvid will not be permitted to return to play at this time,' general manager Martin Mayhew said.   Lions | Jahvid Best not cleared    Mon Oct 15, 06:13 PM

Detroit Lions RB Jahvid Best (concussion) has not been cleared to be activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Footballguys view: The Lions have his best interest at heart here. Doctors did not clear Best to resume football activity yet this year, but he is vowing to return to the field ASAP. Dynasty owners can buy low on Best now as a lottery ticket pick. Re-draft owners can drop Best from their roster as he may not get activated at all this season. This backfield will be Mikel Leshoure's with a dash of Joique Bell as a receiving back.

Lions | Jahvid Best injury update    Mon Oct 15, 02:37 PM

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said he still has not heard the results of RB Jahvid Best's (concussion) medical tests. Schwartz said the doctors are still discussing the situation.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners in deeper leagues could take a chance on Best but there's huge concerns here. He's a backup RB at this point in his career who will be used on a limited basis if he ever gets back on the football field.

Lions | Jahvid Best injury update     Sat Oct 13, 09:04 AM

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said Friday, Oct. 12, he still did not know the results of RB Jahvid Best's (concussion) neurological tests. 'I don't have any updates,' Schwartz said. 'He's been through a lot of testing this week. As far as I know, they are still going over the results. I don't know if we'd even hear anything today. That's still an ongoing process, but his testing, as far as I know, has been completed. I don't know if there is anything else they will require there. I haven't gotten any word.'

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners need to proceed with caution when considering Best for their roster. He's talented, but these concussion problems have put a cloud over his future. Even if he's cleared we see the Lions limiting his touches as a backup RB, change of pace guy behind starter Mikel Leshoure.

Lions | Jahvid Best optimistic about status    Thu Oct 11, 01:57 PM

Detroit Lions RB Jahvid Best (concussion) said he underwent a concussion test Monday, Oct. 8, and will receive the results Friday, Oct. 12. He said he is optimistic about being cleared to practice and play.

Footballguys view: If Best is cleared, he could assume a Darren Sproles role for the Lions in the passing game, but the team will probably limit his touches at first. He's worth a pickup now to see what happens until you're in a short bench league.

Lions | Jahvid Best could be activated next week    Tue Oct 9, 06:39 PM

Detroit Lions RB Jahvid Best (concussion) will undergo tests this week to determine if he can be taken off the Physically Unable to Perform list, and if he passes the tests, he could be activated as soon as Monday, Oct. 15. 'He's in very good physical shape,' head coach Jim Schwartz said. 'Each guy is a little bit different. We took an open mind with Mikel (Leshoure) when he came back. He was able to come back and have a really good opening game. We're too far away there.' Schwarz thinks Best could play right away after he returns, and he said that Best is in the best shape of his career.

Lions | Jahvid Best to undergo tests    Sun Oct 7, 04:27 PM

Detroit Lions RB Jahvid Best (concussion) will undergo tests this week to determine if he is able to come off the Physically Unable to Perform list. Best still has not received clearance to play and the team is not sure when he will come off the PUP list. Best has met with several doctors and has not received a consensus about his condition.

Footballguys view: The bottom line here is not that Best could return, it's that he still hasn't been cleared. He's worth a pickup in deep leagues, but we don't know anything new here about his actual condition.

Lions | Searching for more RBs    Tue Aug 28, 06:32 PM

Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew has been calling other teams in search of help at the running back position. RBs Jahvid Best (concussion) and Mikel Leshoure haven't been able to stay healthy, and now RB Kevin Smith (ankle) is dealing with an ankle injury. Best will open the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list and Leshoure is suspended for the first two games of the season.

Footballguys view: The Lions need help at the RB position and are making some phone calls to see who is out there. Some think the Broncos could be interested in dealing Knowshon Moreno if the price was right. Moreno played with Matthew Stafford in college at Georgia and is a quality receiving back. A guy like Chris Ivory could be available from the Saints. He's been outplayed by Travaris Cadet this preseason and is on the roster bubble.

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said the team has not decided whether RB Jahvid Best (concussion) will start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list but did say extra time off would benefit Best. Best has been working out by himself since has not been cleared to practice.

Footballguys view: Best's football future is in question after these major concussion problems. He's too risky to draft in your fantasy league.

Lions | Jahvid Best's return date remains uncertain    Mon Aug 20, 04:11 PM

The return date for Detroit Lions RB Jahvid Best (concussion) remains unknown. Best has not played since he suffered a concussion Oct. 16 last season against the San Francisco 49ers.

Footballguys view: Best is a strong candidate to begin the season on the PUP list. That would force him to miss the first six weeks of the regular season. After that the Lions would have a three week window to decide his fate. At that time they can choose to activate him or put him on season ending Injured Reserve.

Lions | Jahvid Best likely to start season on PUP list    Wed Aug 15, 12:07 PM

Detroit Lions RB Jahvid Best (concussion) is expected to start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list, which would sidelined him for the first six games.

Footballguys view: Best may never be the same player he once was. Starting on the PUP list will give a bigger opportunity to Kevin Smith (in the first two weeks) and Mikel Leshoure (after his two game suspension. We like Joique Bell as a nice deep sleeper pick if you've got the roster space. Smith and Leshoure are both known to be somewhat injury prone.

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said RB Jahvid Best (concussion) is not considered day-to-day and is expected to miss several weeks.

Footballguys view: As if you needed any more evidence to avoid Best this year. There's no reason to take him now. Kevin Smith and Mikel Leshoure are both great gambles in the 10th or later, and get to know the name Joique Bell, the Lions fourth-string running back.

Lions | Disappointed with Jahvid Best's progress    Tue Jul 31, 12:50 PM

Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said he's 'a little bit surprised' and 'a little bit disappointed' that RB Jahvid Best (concussion) has not been cleared for contact nine months following his last concussion. Best is symptom-free and has been working out since December. The team isn't in a rush to make a move to fortify the running back corps in case Best can't play. RBs Kevin Smith and Stefan Logan have taken most of the repetitions in training camp so far with RB Mikel Leshoure (hamstring) dealing with a hamstring injury.

Footballguys view: Our Jene Bramel clarified the situation - no one really knows when Best will get cleared to play. He's not worth taking in the first 10 rounds right now. Both Mikel Leshoure and Kevin Smith are moving up our draft boards.

Lions | Hoping Jahvid Best gets cleared to practice    Thu Jul 26, 01:55 PM

The Detroit Lions are hoping RB Jahvid Best (concussion) is cleared to participate in the first training camp practice but are not sure it will happen. Head coach Jim Schwartz said the team will be cautious with Best when he does receive clearance.

Footballguys view: That Best is still not cleared for contact this long after the 2011 season is a sign of just how fragile he is. Best has proven RB1 upside in PPR leagues, but his season (and maybe career) could end on any hit. He's not worth considering until at least the fifth or sixth round.

Detroit Lions RB Jahvid Best (concussion) was scheduled to meet with his doctor this month to receive clearance to participate during training camp, but his representatives are not commenting on whether he received the clearance yet.

Footballguys view: Best's durability concerns will have fantasy owners strongly considering Mikel LeShoure as a handcuff. LeShoure will miss the first two games due to a suspension, but could emerge as a feature back if Best is hurt again.

Lions | Jahvid Best expected to be ready    Sat Jun 30, 01:39 AM

Detroit Lions RB Jahvid Best (concussion) is expected to be ready for the start of the regular season. Barring any setbacks, he is expected to see a majority of the carries early on while RB Mikel Leshoure (knee) serves a two-game suspension. General manager Martin Mayhew recently said he expects a breakthrough season for Best.

Footballguys view: Best is arguably the most talented RB on the Lions roster, and if they want to advance in the postseason a more balanced offensive attack is needed. Fantasy owners are hesitant to pull the trigger on Best because of his long injury history. He's currently coming off the board at RB29 near the end of the 6th round.

Lions | Have been impressed with Jahvid Best     Thu Jun 14, 09:44 AM

Detroit Lions RB Jahvid Best (concussion) has looked strong throughout the team's offseason program, including minicamp. General manager Martin Mayhew said the rehab progress of Best gave him the confidence to address other needs during free agency. 'I think Jahvid has been outstanding,' Mayhew said. 'His speed and quicnkess, he looks great. If the running backs are healthy - which is a really big if - it's an outstanding group of players. I want to see how (the team's health at the position) plays out before we go in a different direction.'

Footballguys view: Best is the most talented RB on the Lions roster and could make a big impact in 2012. However, injuries have prevented him from playing up to his potential and Best's concussions problems are a big concern for the team.

Lions | May look for RB depth in draft     Sat Mar 31, 09:14 AM

Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said the team will face backfield depth issues if RBs Mikel Leshoure (Achilles') and Jahvid Best (concussion) aren't productive in 2012. The Lions are prepared to add depth at running back in the NFL Draft if the right player is available in the later rounds. 'As you probably have noticed, backs have really been devalued in the NFL,' Mayhew said. 'The free-agent backs this year aren't getting very much play.
