Patriots | Work out 11 players    Fri Sep 6, 06:44 PM

The New England Patriots worked out free-agent QB Austin Davis (Rams), QB B.J. Coleman (Packers), QB Graham Harrell (Jets), RB Damien Berry (Ravens), RB Jonathan Dwyer (Steelers), RB Cameron Marshall (Dolphins), WR Josh Bellamy (Chiefs), WR Chad Bumphis (Dolphins), DT Sione Fua (Panthers), DT Clinton McDonald (Seahawks) and DT Andre Neblett (Buccaneers) Friday, Sept. 6.

Footballguys view: Dwyer is the most talented name on the list, but the Patriots are only doing these tryouts to have a pool of players to choose from if they suffer injuries at these positions.

Ravens | 11 players released     Sun Aug 25, 11:51 AM

The Baltimore Ravens waived RB Damien Berry, WR Rashaad Carter, OG Jack Cornell, OT Ramon Harewood, CB Moe Lee, OT David Mims, DE Will Pericak, WR Gerrard Sheppard, WR Tommy Streeter and LB Meshak Williams. The team also released TE Visanthe Shiancoe.

Footballguys view: Streeter is a size/speed receiver who was the poor man's Stephen Hill in last year's draft. He could get picked up elsewhere because of his rare physical talent.

Footballguys view: Berry gives the team a speed back in their RB corps. He could also help them in the return game.

Ravens | Could add RB to the roster    Wed Aug 8, 11:01 AM

Baltimore Ravens RBs Anthony Allen, Bernard Pierce and Damien Berry have not made nearly as much noise in training camp as RB Bobby Rainey, an undrafted free agent from Western Kentucky. However, Rainey is a clone of RB Ray Rice and the team might need a change-of-pace runner. As a result, the Ravens could add a free agent near the end of camp.

Footballguys view: We wouldn't call Rainey a clone of Ray Rice. He's a compact runner with good balance and a low center of gravity and he's got good open field speed like Rice. However, he struggles with vision and is not a quality inside/out runner. Too often on film (or at the Shrine Game) Rainey would try to bounce runs outside or waste time dancing in the backfield. He's a change of pace back at best in the pros, and the Ravens could be in the market for a more adequate backup.

Ravens | Battle for backup running back    Tue Aug 7, 05:53 PM

The battle for the No. 2 role behind Ray Rice in the Baltimore Ravens' backfield isn't clear right now. While RB Bernard Pierce (hamstring) appears to be the most suited for an every-down role if called upon, a hamstring injury has prevented him from being on the field much. RB Damien Berry bulked up and has had a solid camp while RB Anthony Allen hasn't shown much in moves to go along with his power-running style. Undrafted rookie RB Bobby Rainey has turned heads. The diminutive back has shown the ability to catch well out of the backfield and no longer appears to be a long shot to make the team's final roster.

Footballguys view: We like Pierce to win the job if he's healthy. Berry is more of a pure speed back and Allen doesn't have an impressive overall skill set. Pierce is a bruising back who can grind down an opposing defense. His elite balance makes him difficult to bring down and effective after contact.

Ravens | Anthony Allen likely to open camp as No. 2 RB    Sat Jul 21, 12:03 AM

Baltimore Ravens RB Anthony Allen is likely to open training camp July 26 as the primary backup to starting RB Ray Rice. Allen will be trying to hold off RBs Damien Berry, Bernard Pierce and Bobby Rainey.

Footballguys view: Allen may begin the season as the primary backup behind Ray Rice, but if you're looking for a handcuff look elsewhere. We think rookie Bernard Pierce is the true backup and should win the job in training camp. Pierce is a more naturally gifted runner than Allen, and has better speed in the open field.

Ravens | Bernard Pierce to compete for No. 2 job    Fri Jun 29, 10:14 PM

Baltimore Ravens RB Bernard Pierce is believed to be a solid fit for the offense, and a solid complement to RB Ray Rice. He will challenge for the primary backup job to Rice, competing with RBs Anthony Allen and Damien Berry for the spot in training camp.

Footballguys view: Pierce is a talented runner with natural patience and instincts for the position. He understands cutback angles and has elite balance which allows him to change direction with ease. Pierce is a strong between the tackles runner, but lacks the speed to be a homerun threat.

Ravens | Could still add a veteran back    Sat Jun 16, 12:47 AM

The Baltimore Ravens say they are comfortable with RBs Anthony Allen, Bernard Pierce and Damien Berry as their backups to RB Ray Rice, but the team could still add a veteran back to the mix.

Footballguys view: The Ravens may evaluate the position closer and decide to add a veteran runner for training camp. Several RBs remain on the open market like former Bengals starter Cedric Benson.

Ravens | Anthony Allen confident he can get job done    Sat Mar 31, 10:42 PM

Baltimore Ravens RB Anthony Allen is in the mix to compete for the primary backup job behind RB Ray Rice following the retirement of RB Ricky Williams. Allen is confident he knows the system, protections, lines and passes, even though he barely played last season. '(Anthony) goes from third (running back to) potentially No. 1 if something happens,' head coach John Harbaugh said. 'Every backup player is an injury away, a play away from being the guy. We think a lot of him, we think a lot of (RB Damien Berry). We think they're going to have very good seasons, but we've got to look at some insurance, too. We've got to have more than two running backs on our roster, so we'll add some guys.'

Ravens | Confident with RBs on the roster     Sat Feb 25, 08:32 AM

Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said that he was surprised by retired RB Ricky Williams' original decision to consider retirement. And then he was surprised again that Williams didn't rethink the decision. However, he said he's confident the team can go into next season with RBs Anthony Allen and Damien Berry serving as backups.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners need to remember the names Anthony Allen and Damien Berry. Allen started his college career at Louisville but transferred to Georgia Tech and became a star. Berry was a speed back at the University of Miami and is a very explosive player who is a threat to score every time he touches the ball.

Ravens | Two could get chance to get No. 2 RB job    Wed Feb 15, 06:09 PM

Baltimore Ravens RBs Anthony Allen and Damien Berry could get the chance to win the No. 2 running back job during the offseason.

Footballguys view: Berry was a practice squad back in 2011, but he should be given a chance to pass Allen on the depth chart this offseason. The Ravens are likely to bring in at least one more back via free agency or the draft.

Ravens | Damien Berry to sign Tuesday    Tue Jul 26, 01:24 AM

The Baltimore Ravens will sign undrafted free-agent RB Damien Berry (Miami Fla.) Tuesday, July 26, according to a league source.

Footballguys view: Berry was one of our favorite undrafted backs because of his work ethic, heart and determination. Our very own Cecil Lammey thought Berry looked good at the NFLPA Game in San Antonio earlier this year. He has good leg drive and could have a role as a short yardage back and special teams player.
