Updating a previous report, Detroit Lions CB Rashean Mathis continued to see work at nickelback in practice Tuesday, Aug. 20. He can play nickel, outside cornerback and safety, but it appears his best opportunity to contribute will be beating out CB Bill Bentley at nickel. Mathis helped his cause for a bigger role with an interception on a deep pass in practice Tuesday.

Detroit Lions CB Darius Slay (knee) is expected to compete with CB Bill Bentley (shoulder) for the starting job opposite CB Chris Houston. Slay missed the rookie camp last weekend after undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his knee. However, Slay is expected to be ready for training camp.

Detroit Lions CB Bill Bentley (shoulder) is rehabbing from surgery on both of his shoulders, but he is still hopeful of earning a starting job in training camp and the preseason. He isn't quite back to 100 percent with organized team activities (OTAs) starting next week. However, Bentley said Wednesday, May 15, he will be healthy before too long. 'I'm going to be there when everybody hits the field,' Bentley said. 'I'm coming to compete.'

Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said he expects the teams high draft picks to be on the field quickly because of the needs of the team. 'That's a fair statement, but it's also fair to say we had more holes coming into it, or more holes that we knew about, coming into this draft than we did last year,' Mayhew said. 'We do expect a lot of those guys, especially guys that we took early, to be on the field pretty quickly.'

Detroit Lions CBs Bill Bentley (shoulder), Chris Greenwood (abdominal) and Jonte Green were drafted last April, but remain unproven. Bentley missed most of the season due to a shoulder injury, Greenwood missed the entire year due to an abdominal ailment, and Green was mostly a backup.
