NFL | Cedric Benson attempting comeback    Wed Oct 8, 10:25 AM

Free-agent RB Cedric Benson (Packers) is working out and hopes to land a tryout with an NFL team.

Footballguys view: There are a few teams that could look for running back help (Denver, Carolina, Minnesota), but we don't think Benson is on the radar. We'll see if he starts to get some private workouts, and even when he does, we're not overly excited about his fantasy prospects.

Packers | Cedric Benson to visit    Tue Apr 23, 05:24 PM

The Green Bay Packers are scheduled to meet with free agent RB Cedric Benson (foot) Wednesday, April 23. Benson is almost completely healed from a lisfranc injury.

Footballguys view: Benson looked good for the Packers last year before going down with his foot injury. The Packers could add him for a good price and get a veteran RB capable of carrying the full load. However, even if they add Benson we think they'll still address the RB position in the 2013 NFL Draft.

NFL | Cedric Benson injury update    Thu Apr 18, 09:56 AM

Free-agent RB Cedric Benson (foot) is getting closer to 100 percent, and he is on teams' radars.

Footballguys view: Benson looked good for the Packers last year before his LisFranc injury. He's a two down banger who can produce between the Tackles.

Packers | Cedric Benson could return on short-term deal    Mon Feb 18, 04:16 PM

The Green Bay Packers may be willing to re-sign impending free-agent RB Cedric Benson this offseason but likely would give him only a one-year deal worth the veteran minimum.

Footballguys view: Benson looked good for the Packers before going down with a foot injury in week 5 against the Colts. He's unlikely to have a flood of offers coming his way at this point in his career.

Packers | Cedric Benson clearing up legal issues    Thu Feb 14, 12:40 AM

Impending free-agent RB Cedric Benson (Packers) paid fines for a trio of traffic citations in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. He still faces another animal at-large citation based on allegations that his two Rottweilers attacked 17 calves on a neighbor's farm in December. Benson goes to court on that citation Wednesday, Feb. 20.

Packers | Cedric Benson an option in 2013    Wed Jan 23, 10:24 AM

Green Bay Packers impending free-agent RB Cedric Benson could very well return as the team's starting running back in 2013. 'I think there's a chance for that,' Benson said. 'At least I sure hope there is. I've been around a long time, and I know it's a strange league. But I really hope I get another chance here.'

Green Bay Packers impending free-agent Cedric Benson (foot) indicated that he would like to re-sign with the Packers this offseason.

Packers | Searching for lead back    Fri Jan 18, 01:17 PM

The Green Bay Packers feel the need to find a lead back heading into the 2013 season, and that man may not be on the current roster. The Packers shuffled through as many as six running backs this season and weren't satisfied with any of their options. Among the unrestricted free agents they could target this offseason include St. Louis Rams RB Steven Jackson, Miami Dolphins RB Reggie Bush, Dallas Cowboys RB Felix Jones and New York Jets RB Shonn Greene. Green Bay would likely be interested in Jackson in the secondary market because he'll be 30 this year.

Footballguys view: The Packers had the right idea when they signed Cedric Benson last year but he couldn't stay healthy and missed most of the season. James Starks hasn't worked out and Alex Green got a shot this year but failed to impress. DuJuan Harris is a great change of pace back but some think he's only a change of pace back.

Packers | Aaron Rodgers would love to see Cedric Benson return    Tue Jan 15, 03:21 PM

Packers | RBs were not used much as receivers     Fri Jan 11, 06:49 PM

Green Bay Packers RB Alex Green, Ryan Grant, James Starks and DuJuan Harris combined for only 25 catches during the regular season. RB Cedric Benson (foot) caught 14 passes and was on pace for 44 catches this season before he was placed on Injured Reserve.

Packers | Cedric Benson to stay on IR     Thu Nov 29, 02:16 PM

Green Bay Packers RB Cedric Benson (foot) will stay on Injured Reserve for the rest of the season. Head coach Mike McCarthy said Benson underwent surgery on his foot Wednesday, Nov. 28.

Footballguys view: Time for fantasy owners to let him go. Some were hanging onto Benson hoping for a return during the fantasy playoffs and now he won't be back this season. Benson will be a free agent in 2013, 30 years old and coming off a Lisfranc injury.

Packers | Cedric Benson to visit specialist    Tue Nov 27, 10:25 PM

Updating a previous report, Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said Tuesday, Nov. 27, that RB Cedric Benson (foot) will not practice this week, and he said he expects to have more information Wednesday, Nov. 28. Benson is set to meet with a specialist this week concerning his Lisfranc injury.

Footballguys view: Benson has previously stated that surgery could possibly be an option for him. He's currently on the IR/Designated to return list, but surgery would force him out for the rest of the season. Fantasy owners who were holding onto Benson in hopes of a return during the fantasy playoffs could be sorely disappointed.

Packers | Cedric Benson unlikely to practice    Tue Nov 27, 07:09 PM

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy doesn't think RB Cedric Benson (foot) will return to practice this week.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners waiting for Benson to return are going to have to wait a little longer. He thinks a week 15 return against the Bears is likely. We'll see if he can start practicing before preparing for his return.

Packers | Cedric Benson eligible to return Dec. 9    Wed Nov 21, 11:16 PM

Updating a previous report, Green Bay Packers RB Cedric Benson (foot) is eligible to return from the Injured Reserve/Designated to Return list Dec. 9. He said Wednesday, Nov. 21, that surgery still might be a possibility to correct Lisfranc foot damage.

Footballguys view: We're not excited about Benson's prospects when he does return from injury. Fantasy owners who have been holding onto Benson hoping for a splashy return may be disappointed with the results.

Packers | Cedric Benson considering surgery    Wed Nov 21, 07:58 PM

Green Bay Packers RB Cedric Benson (foot) is still considering surgery for his Lisfranc foot injury.

Footballguys view: Not the news you want to hear if you've been holding onto Benson hoping for a return in the fantasy playoffs. He's currently targeting a week 15 return against the Bears.

Packers | Cedric Benson injury update     Sat Nov 17, 12:28 PM

Updating a previous item, Green Bay Packers RB Cedric Benson (foot) said he is still not ready to resume practicing; however, he is hopeful of returning for the team's game Dec. 16 against the Chicago Bears. 'I'm kind of looking and thinking the Bears game,' Benson said. 'I think we're still a little bit out from practicing, from putting on a cleat and pounding on it like that. I think we're still a couple of weeks away from that, but very close, very close. Kind of the way the doctor puts it to me all the time is regardless of anything, whether you could play tomorrow, you've still got three weeks where you can't play.'

Footballguys view: Until Benson returns we'll see James Starks as the starter with Alex Green now playing as a reserve. Fantasy owners holding onto Benson may not get the returns they hoped for in the fantasy playoffs.

Packers | Cedric Benson making progress    Fri Nov 16, 10:32 PM

Green Bay Packers RB Cedric Benson (foot) is not running yet, and he is staying cautious for now. Benson is using a 'high-tech' treadmill, and on the device, his injured foot doesn't need to absorb his full body weight. He can adjust the percentage. Right now, he is at 65 percent body weight on that treadmill. Benson would not put a specific timetable on his return, but said 'absolutely' he wants to play again this season.

Footballguys view: With this new information, the idea of Benson starting when he is eligible to return in week 14 seems unlikely. He thinks he can return for a week 15 matchup with his old team, the Chicago Bears. At this point, the wisdom of holding Benson for a potential fantasy playoff contribution is questionable unless you are in a deep league with a thin waiver wire.

Packers | James Starks expected to start     Thu Nov 15, 09:55 PM

Green Bay Packers running backs coach Alex Van Pelt indicated RB James Starks likely will start at running back until RB Cedric Benson (foot) returns. 'I think he was productive when he was in there the last couple of games with limited touches, and he has the most experience of the backs we have right now. I think he's earned the right to get in there and get some more touches,' Van Pelt said.

Footballguys view: Alex Green got a shot to prove himself for several weeks and he didn't impress. Starks is a more upright runner but can gash a team when the holes in front of him are big. We're not expecting big fantasy numbers from Starks but if you've got a spot on your bench then Starks is worth a stash to see what happens.

Packers | RBs starting to get roles     Thu Nov 8, 03:04 PM

Green Bay Packers running backs coach Alex Van Pelt indicated the team has roles for their running backs moving forward. The team believes RB James Starks is best used when they are in their normal offense while RB Alex Green is better when the team uses the no-huddle offense. FB John Kuhn (hamstring) will be the third down back once he returns from his hamstring injury. The team could also have Cedric Benson (foot) back for the final four games of the season if he comes off the Injured Reserve/Designated to Return list when eligible.

Footballguys view: In other words, none of them have value now, and Benson only does if they use him as a feature back, like they did before his injury.

Packers | Cedric Benson placed on IR/Designated to Return    Wed Oct 10, 02:33 PM

The Green Bay Packers have placed RB Cedric Benson (foot) on the Injured Reserve/Designated to Return list.

Footballguys view: Benson may be able to return for the last four games of the season. Alex Green will now be the team's starter with James Starks serving as his backup. We think with this injury the Packers will go back to being a pass happy team.

Packers | Cedric Benson to miss at least eight weeks    Mon Oct 8, 10:19 PM

Green Bay Packers RB Cedric Benson (foot) has a Lisfranc injury, and he will miss at least eight weeks. It is possible he might be shut down for the remainder of the season.

Footballguys view: So much for his injury being minor. The Packers will now move forward without Benson for quite some time. Alex Green, James Starks, and FB John Kuhn will be used in a RBBC. Without Benson we could see more from QB Aaron Rodgers and the passing game.

Packers | Cedric Benson ruled out for Week 6    Mon Oct 8, 04:29 PM

Green Bay Packers RB Cedric Benson (foot) has been ruled out of the team's Week 6 game, according to head coach Mike McCarthy.

Footballguys view: It's a matchup against the Texans so you probably weren't going to start Benson anyway. The injury sounds minor so we could see a return to the lineup in week 7 against the Rams.

Packers | No Lisfranc injury for Cedric Benson?     Mon Oct 8, 08:27 AM

Green Bay Packers RB Cedric Benson (foot) said following Week 5 that he does not believe he suffered a Lisfranc injury, only a mild sprain. 'I mean, it could be a possibility, but in my opinion it's just a sprain,' Benson said. 'I was able to walk off and they say guys who have that type of things aren't able to walk off. They X-rayed it and it feels good.'

Footballguys view: Benson was in a walking boot after the game. We'll know more about his playing status if he can participate in practice later this week. The Packers play the Texans in week 6.

Green Bay Packers RB Cedric Benson (foot) left the game early Week 5 because of a foot injury and is considered questionable to return.

Bengals | Running game lacking big gains     Thu Oct 4, 08:39 AM

Cincinnati Bengals RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis ranks ninth in the AFC in rushing; however, he has also been lacking in consistent big gains. Green-Ellis has 17 carries of five yards or more, which is 12 less than what former starting RB Cedric Benson had at this point last season. Only four have been for 10 yards or more while Benson had double that in 2011.

Footballguys view: Green-Ellis isn't a big play back. It's not surprising he's putting up the numbers on mostly short runs. We're not expecting that to change as the season goes on.

Packers | Goal is to get Cedric Benson more carries    Tue Oct 2, 02:09 PM

Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Tom Clements said the goal is to get RB Cedric Benson more carries, because he gets better with more work. "He's a workhorse and when he touches the ball, the more he touches it, the better he gets," Clements said Monday.

Footballguys view: Benson has been a great fit for the Packers offense. His no-nonsense style works well in the Packers pass happy system. He can still grind down a defense and gets stronger as the game goes on.

Packers | Bigger workload ahead for Cedric Benson?    Sat Sep 15, 10:35 AM

Green Bay Packers RB Cedric Benson had 24 touches in the team's Week 2 game and he could continue to see a heavier workload if opposing defenses are content sitting back with two deep safeties. Head coach Mike McCarthy has also said the offense needs some semblance of a balanced attack.

Footballguys view: We've always loved the fit of Benson on the Packers offense. His no-nonsense style is perfect on a team that has a high powered passing attack. Benson is a grinder who can wear down a defense and gets stronger as the game goes on.

Green Bay Packers RB Cedric Benson rebounded in Week 2, rushing 20 times for a game-high 81 yards against the Chicago Bears. He also caught four passes for 35 yards during the game.

Footballguys view: Benson feasted on the cover-2 defense of his old team for the second time in his career. He might be a matchup play, and next week brings a tough one at the Seahawks. Benson's value is definitely on the rise.

Packers | Coach praises Cedric Benson    Tue Sep 11, 02:51 PM

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy praised RB Cedric Benson, saying that he has been "strictly business" and that he has been impressed with Benson.

Packers | Cedric Benson lays egg in team debut    Mon Sep 10, 12:42 AM

Green Bay Packers RB Cedric Benson carried nine times for just 18 yards in his team debut in Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers. He did not have any receptions out of the backfield, and he wasn't even targeted once.

Footballguys view: We'll give Benson a pass against the tough 49ers defense. Next week against the Bears should be better, as Benson found something extra against his old team when he was with the Bengals.

Packers | Cedric Benson praised by coaching staff     Thu Sep 6, 03:41 PM

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy praised RB Cedric Benson Thursday, Sept. 6, saying he is happy with where he is at in learning the constantly evolving play book.

Footballguys view: We love the fit, but we hate the matchup against the 49ers this week. Benson is a much better RB than James Starks even though he's not as fast. Starks is a space runner who can have big runs when holes are huge. Benson is a grinder who can make his own space between the tackles. We like Benson better because he's a determined runner who won't dance too much in the backfield.

Packers | Cedric Benson sits atop depth chart    Wed Sep 5, 12:08 AM

Green Bay Packers RB Cedric Benson sits atop the team's initial regular season depth chart heading into Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. James Starks is hurt, and is a space runner when he's healthy. He can pick up yards when holes are huge, but struggles to run through trash. We love Benson's fit on the Packers offense because of his straight ahead, no-nonsense determination.

Packers | Cedric Benson feels he is in prime    Thu Aug 30, 02:06 AM

Green Bay Packers RB Cedric Benson said Tuesday, Aug. 28, that he feels he is in his prime. Benson also felt going to the Packers would be a good fit for him. 'And it would be good to see a few fewer guys in the box, considering how strong (the Packers) in the pass game,' Benson said.

Footballguys view: Benson is a perfect fit for the Packers offense. His no-nonsense style will work better than the dancing style of James Starks. Benson could get 185 carries or so on the season if he stays healthy. We like him as a RB3 with upside for your fantasy team.

Green also said it might be a 'combo' effort, with the coaching staff addressing the situation further Wednesday, Aug. 29.

Footballguys view: Benson is a seasoned veteran who needs only a few reps on the preseason finale. We could see plenty from Alex Green and Brandon Saine.

Packers | Trio of backs ready to fill void    Tue Aug 28, 11:23 PM

Green Bay Packers RBs Cedric Benson and Alex Green are expected to see a bulk of the carries early in the regular season if RB James Starks (turf toe) is not ready to go. Starks has progressed slower than the team hoped. RB Brandon Saine (hamstring) is also in the mix for touches if Starks isn't ready.

Footballguys view: We like Benson more than Starks in the Packers offense. Starks is big and fast in a straight line, but is a space runner who is only productive when holes are huge in front of him. Benson is a two down back, with little to offer as a receiver. However, he's very determined and his straight ahead style could be quite effective for a Green Bay offense that spreads defenses out.

Packers | Cedric Benson debuts    Fri Aug 24, 03:32 AM

Green Bay Packers RB Cedric Benson made his debut with the squad Thursday, Aug. 23, against his former team, the Cincinnati Bengals. Benson ran six times for 38 yards. 'He's getting his feet wet. He made some runs out of nothing and did a nice job on some check-downs. It was good for him. We're excited to have him,' said QB Aaron Rodgers.

Footballguys view: Benson may have a few weeks of fantasy value, but his use and production should be very inconsistent if his performances in recent years and the Packers lack of commitment to the run stay the same this year. He is going as high as the 7th or 8th round, which is earlier than we would take him.

Packers | Impressed with Cedric Benson's work ethic     Thu Aug 23, 10:15 AM

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said he has been impressed with RB Cedric Benson's work ethic and commitment since joining the team. 'He's been motivated,' McCarthy said. 'He's taken my seat in the meeting room. He sits next to Aaron. I've been bumped back a row. I think that's a good thing. He's really into trying to learn this offense because I know I've said it a couple times already, he's trying to learn a different language. He's an accomplished football player. I'm glad he's here. He seems very motivated. And I know he's looking forward to playing Thursday.'

Footballguys view: We like Benson's fit on the Packers. He's not going to catch many passes there, but his straight forward, determined running style should work well in their spread system. Benson could perform like a low end RB2 or flex option for your fantasy team.

Packers | Cedric Benson feels he can have big season    Wed Aug 15, 08:19 AM

Green Bay Packers RB Cedric Benson said he can still be a 1,000-yard back in the NFL, even with the Packers being a pass-first offense. 'I definitely have a goal to still rush for 1,000, 1,000-plus, and set up some big numbers,' Benson said. 'I understand it's not a run-first team and the run is not real heavy here, but there's times where a back gets the ball 25 times (in one game). I'm sure if things are rolling (and) the run game is set to the standard that we're hoping to achieve, it could be way more carries than that. I'm just staying positive and optimistic about it, and I know when I get my opportunities, I'm going to make the best of it.'

Footballguys view: Benson is only a two-down player as he's not much of a receiver out of the backfield. We like his straight ahead style as opposed to the twinkle toes of James Starks. Benson could rush for 700-900 yards this season, even working in a form of RBBC. Defenses will be focused on stopping Aaron Rodgers and the passing game, so Benson won't face many 8 or 9 in the box situations.
