Ravens | Drew Bennett retires    Mon Jul 27, 10:43 AM

Adam Schefter, from ESPN, is reporting Baltimore Ravens WR Drew Bennett is retiring from football only three days after he signed a contract with his new team. Bennett: "I've been blessed to have the opp to play in NFL for as long as I have but it's time for me to move on to next chapter in my life."

Footballguys view: Now the Ravens are really hoping that Derrick Mason comes back. Bennett had an old knee injury that was the deciding factor in his retirement. He didn't play most of 2008, when he was with the Rams, after breaking his foot in week 1 of the regular season. We'll see what Baltimore does now and who they are looking at as a Plan D.

Ravens | Likely won't add another receiver    Sat Jul 25, 08:44 AM

James Walker, of ESPN.com, reports after signing free-agent WR Drew Bennett (Rams), the Baltimore Ravens will likely not pursue another wide receiver, either through free agency or the trade market.

Footballguys view: Ravens coach John Harbaugh is hoping that Derrick Mason will return from his retirement and rejoin the team, but they feel the receivers they have are enough to get the job done. The Ravens have some veteran leadership in their WR corps, and they have some younger receivers with potential. The one thing both sides have in common is the fact that they struggle with injury. Baltimore may have a different outlook about adding another receiver if injuries hit in training camp.

Ravens | Bennett signed    Fri Jul 24, 04:17 PM

Jamison Hensley, of The Baltimore Sun, reports on his Twitter page that the Baltimore Ravens have signed unrestricted free-agent WR Drew Bennett (Rams) to a one-year deal worth the veteran minimum, according to a team source.

Footballguys view: As Jason LaCanfora pointed out yesterday on his NFL.com blog, this tryout was scheduled before Derrick Mason's retirement announcement, so don't automatically assume that Bennett was signed to fill Mason's shoes. We were so unimpressed by Bennett in 2007 that we would hesitate to even slot him ahead of Marcus Smith on the Baltimore WR depth chart.

Ravens | Bennett undergoing physical    Fri Jul 24, 12:44 PM

Edward Lee, of The Baltimore Sun, reports the Baltimore Ravens are going to give unrestricted free-agent WR Drew Bennett (Rams) a physical after he worked out of the team Friday, July 24. He appears to be the team's focus among the receivers that worked out.

Footballguys view: We wouldn't rush out to pick up Bennett, both because of his poor performance in 2007 for the Rams, and the possibility that Derrick Mason could report to the team and play this season.

Ravens | Bennett considered favorite if tryout player signed    Thu Jul 23, 04:19 PM

Jamison Hensley, of The Baltimore Sun, reports unrestricted free-agent WR Drew Bennett (Rams) appears to be the early favorite to be signed among the wide receivers that will try out for the Baltimore Ravens if the Ravens decide to sign one of the tryout players, according to a team source.

Footballguys view: Bennett was so poor last year for the Rams that it's hard to imagine him having an impact on the Ravens, but Joe Flacco can really wing the big deep ball, and catching deep jumpballs was the way Drew Bennett (along with Billy Volek) became a big-time fantasy hero in 2004.

Ravens | Bennett tryout scheduled, Horn's agent contacted before Mason retired    Thu Jul 23, 01:37 PM

Jason LaCanfora, of the NFL Network, reports that the Ravens had scheduled Drew Bennett's tryout and contacted Joe Horn's agent before Derrick Mason announced his retirement. LaCanfora writes "many people in the organization have the feeling Mason will end up playing football this season."

Footballguys view: More and more evidence mounts that Mason is no sure thing to retire. The Ravens should have been concerned about their WR corps even before Mason retired because they have little experience on the roster after the starters, and they didn't address the position in this year's draft.

Ravens | Bennett to work out for team    Mon Jul 20, 06:56 PM

Terry McCormick, of the Nashville City Paper, reports that WR Drew Bennett is one of four receivers that will work out for the Ravens on Friday. Earlier it was reported that DJ Hackett is one of the others.

Footballguys view: Let's just say we'd be much more excited about Hackett's fantasy prospects than Bennett. He looked bad on a bad team last year.

Ravens | Harrison, Marshall among top options to replace Mason    Wed Jul 15, 07:20 PM

Jamison Hensley, of the Baltimore Sun, opined that the top five options to replace Derrick Mason are 1) Marvin Harrison, 2) Brandon Marshall 3) Anquan Boldin 4) Plaxico Burress, 5) Drew Bennett

Footballguys view: We like the options of Marshall and Boldin, especially if all the Ravens have to pay is a first-round pick. Marshall (and Burress) are character risks, but the Ravens seem to have a strong culture of accountability. We're afraid that Harrison might not have much left in the tank, and Bennett didn't have much in the tank to begin with.

Rick Stroud, from the St. Petersburg Times, reports unrestricted free-agent WR Drew Bennett (Rams) is scheduled to work out for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Monday, June 15.

Footballguys view: Both Bennett and D.J. Hackett are working out for the Bucs on Monday. The Bucs are looking for a veteran to upgrade their WR corps and are rumored to be interested in Marvin Harrison and Plaxico Burress as well.

Titans | In no hurry to sign Bennett    Fri May 22, 10:23 PM

Jim Wyatt, of The Tennessean, reports the Tennessee Titans are in no hurry to sign free-agent WR Drew Bennett (Rams).

Footballguys view: The team would like to give their younger players as many repetitions as possible. The team thinks they will be OK with the receivers they currently have if those players make progress.

Titans | Unsure about signing Bennett    Wed May 13, 09:08 AM

Jim Wyatt, of The Tennessean, reports Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher said Tuesday, May 12, he was 'pleased' with the results of free-agent WR Drew Bennett's (Rams) physical but the team hadn't decided whether to sign him.

Footballguys view: The Titans have several young WRs on the roster that could easily outproduce Drew Bennett at this point in his career. They could sign Bennett for more competition, but there is already plenty to go around.

Titans | Bennett visits Monday    Tue May 12, 10:51 AM

The Associated Press reports free-agent WR Drew Bennett (Rams) met with the Tennessee Titans Monday, May 11.

Footballguys view: The Titans are looking for help at the WR position and Bennett already has a history with the team. We'll see if the team decides to bring him back.

NFL | Drew Bennett may go back to the Titans    Sun May 10, 08:38 PM

Free Agent WR Drew Bennett (Rams) is scheduled to visit the Titans on Monday.

Footballguys view: If only he could bring Billy Volek back with him! Bennett started his career with the Titans and put up some decent numbers along the way. He left for greener pastures in St. Louis but his production never matched what he did in Tennessee. He could be re-united with the Titans to battle Lavelle Hawkins for playing time as the 4th WR.

Falcons | Bennett works out    Thu Apr 30, 02:40 PM

Steve Wyche, of NFL.com, reports the Atlanta Falcons worked out unrestricted free-agent WR Drew Bennett (Rams) Thursday, April 30.

Footballguys view: Roddy White and Michael Jenkins are locked into the starting lineup. Behind them are largely unproven players like Harry Douglas, the injury prone Brian Finneran, and the undrafted rookie Aaron Kelly. Bennett is not the same player he used to be when he tied an NFL record for scoring 8 Touchdowns in 3 weeks. Drew Bennett could make this team, although there are questions about how productive he could be at this point in his career.

Browns | Bennett scheduled to visit    Wed Apr 29, 12:14 PM

Terry McCormick, of the Nashville City Paper, reports free-agent WR Drew Bennett (Rams) was scheduled to visit the Cleveland Browns Tuesday. April 28, and take a physical, according to a league source.

Footballguys view: The Browns addressed their need for WRs in the 2009 NFL Draft where they selected Brian Robiskie and Mohammed Massaquoui in the 2nd round. They also signed Jordan Norwood, and Brent Casteel as Undrafted Free Agents after the draft. Drew Bennett hasn't been the same player since he and Billy Volek were racking up huge points in the fantasy playoffs several years ago. However, the Browns are largely unproven behind WR Braylon Edwards so if Bennett does sign he may have a chance to make the team.
