Jets | John Beck joins NYJ coaching staff    Tue Nov 2, 01:21 PM

Former NFL quarterback John Beck, who has been the last several years as a personal quarterback coach for Zach Wilson and several other draft prospects, will reportedly join the coaching staff of the New York Jets for the remainder of the season.

Footballguys view: Beck knows the Shanahan system well (that's what Mike LaFleur runs) from his days in Washington playing for Mike Shanahan. He's been working as a "QB guru" and knows the game well.

Jets | Will work out two QBs    Sun Aug 25, 11:21 AM

The New York Jets are expected to work out free-agent QB Matt Leinart (Raiders) and QB John Beck (Texans).

Footballguys view: If the team feels Geno Smith isn't ready and Mark Sanchez isn't healthy enough to start vs. the Bucs in week 1, one of these two street free agents could be kicking off the 2013 campaign as the Jets starter.

Bills | Will work out two QBs    Sat Aug 24, 09:10 PM

The Buffalo Bills are scheduled to work out free-agent QBs Matt Leinart (Raiders) and John Beck (Texans).

Footballguys view: Haven't Bills fans suffered enough? Leinart and Beck are not the answer for the Bills but they're desperate right now after losing Kevin Kolb to a concussion. Rookie E.J. Manuel is recovering from a minor knee injury but his status for the opening week of the season is up in the air.

Texans | John Beck waived    Wed Oct 3, 02:20 PM

Texans | John Beck, Case Keenum will each play half    Wed Aug 29, 04:49 PM

Houston Texans QB John Beck will play the first half in the final preseason game Thursday, Aug. 29. QB Case Keenum will take over and play the second half of the game.

Footballguys view: Bouncing around to three different teams since 2007 we've seen enough from John Beck. Keenum lacks elite talent but we think he could beat out Beck for the team's QB3 job.

Texans | John Beck, Case Keenum continue to battle    Mon Aug 20, 01:43 AM

Houston Texans QBs John Beck and Case Keenum continue to fight for the No. 3 quarterback job. Keenum served as the third QB Saturday, Aug. 18, and he threw just three passes.

Footballguys view: Beck has the experience, but offers little upside as the QB3 behind Matt Schaub and T.J. Yates. Keenum is a system QB who lacks a big arm, but could be an interesting developmental prospect the team would like to keep around. Fantasy value (including dynasty value) on both of these guys is non-existent.

Texans | John Beck may have edge for No. 3 QB job    Mon Jul 30, 03:27 PM

Texans | Two QB to split reps during minicamp    Fri Jun 8, 05:50 PM

Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said QBs John Beck and Case Keenum will split the reps during minicamp next week. Kubiak said QB T.J. Yates will sit out the practices.

Footballguys view: Beck was added after the Redskins cut him earlier this year. Keenum was added as an Undrafted Free Agent after the 2012 NFL Draft. We like Keenum to win the third QB job behind Matt Schaub and T.J. Yates.

Texans | Three competing for backup QB role    Thu May 31, 01:54 AM

Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak indicated Wednesday, May 30, that QBs John Beck and Case Keenum are competing with QB T.J. Yates for the primary backup job to QB Matt Schaub.

Footballguys view: Yates learned a lot during his trial by fire last year, so he would have to implode in camp and preseason to lose the job to Beck. Keenum is going to have to be completely overhauled to make the transition from the University of Houston's shotgun/spread offense.

Texans | Case Keenum appears to be top pick for No. 3 QB job    Mon May 21, 02:16 PM

Houston Texans QB Case Keenum is believed to have the edge over QB John Beck for the No. 3 quarterback job during the offseason.

Footballguys view: Beck has failed to impress with three teams and is most likely just a camp arm. Keenum would have to really struggle in order for Beck to win the job.

Texans | Agree to deal with John Beck    Thu May 10, 01:47 AM

The Houston Texans agreed to a deal with free-agent QB John Beck (Redskins) Wednesday, May 9.

Footballguys view: Why? We like Undrafted Free Agent Case Keenum more than Beck. He's failed to impress with three different teams (Miami, Baltimore, Washington) and is unlikely to do much for Houston if he even makes the team.

Redskins | John Beck released    Sat Apr 28, 03:07 PM

QB John Beck is no longer in the plans of the Washington Redskins; his contract has been terminated by the team following the drafting of QBs Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins.

Redskins | John Beck believes he will start again in NFL    Mon Feb 13, 01:54 PM

Washington Redskins QB John Beck said he believes he will receive another opportunity to start for an NFL team in his career but is not sure when it will happen.

Footballguys view: There's wishful thinking, then there's this. Beck was horrible as a starter in Miami and in Washington. We can't imagine him getting a shot to start again unless it's an act of desperation.

Redskins | John Beck grateful for chance to start    Wed Nov 16, 10:03 PM

Washington Redskins QB John Beck went 0-3 as the team's starter, tossing two touchdowns and four interceptions while compiling a 72.1 passer rating. He said Wednesday, Nov. 16, that he was grateful for the chance to start. 'I do truly believe in the phrase, 'Tough times don't last, tough people do,'' Beck said. 'I'm grateful for the opportunity I did get to play in games and be in front of live bullets.'

Washington Redskins QBs John Beck and Rex Grossman split reps with the first-team offense during practice this week. The team may be splitting the reps to see if Beck will improve from being in a competition.

Redskins | John Beck says he needs to improve    Mon Nov 7, 03:11 AM

Washington Redskins QB John Beck will get another shot at bringing an end to his 0-7 record as an NFL starter. He is expected to start during Week 10 against the Miami Dolphins, but Beck has done little in his three starts to suggest he'll be a long-term option for the Redskins. 'I don't want it to continue,' Beck said of the team's offensive problems. 'I want to put my foot down, and I want it to stop.' Beck went on to say the team has to get better and it has to start with him. Head coach Mike Shanahan said it is easy to blame the quarterback, but the team has lost some pieces of the puzzle recently and it has helped lead to the quarterback looking pretty average. 'We're playing pretty average as a group,' Shanahan said.

Footballguys view: Beck needs to improve quickly as we can't imagine him holding on to the starting job much longer. Checking down to your RB out of the backfield almost 20 times a game is not the way to move an NFL offense.

Redskins | John Beck mediocre Week 9    Sun Nov 6, 06:30 PM

Washington Redskins QB John Beck went 30-for-47 for 254 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Week 9 against the San Francisco 49ers.

Footballguys view: Beck only found the end zone in garbage time and really got little going outside of dumpoffs to Roy Helu. He is barely even a backup quality QB, but the Redskins are stuck with him or Rex Grossman for the rest of the year.

Redskins | John Beck to start    Wed Nov 2, 04:06 PM

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said QB John Beck will start in Week 9.

Footballguys view: Beck may have a short leash if he struggles against the 49ers. We could be seeing Rex Grossman return to the field as the team's starting QB if Beck doesn't start playing better to help the team get on the winning track.

Redskins | John Beck passes for 208 yards, two INTs    Sun Oct 30, 10:03 PM

Washington Redskins QB John Beck completed 20 of 33 passes for 208 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions in Week 8 against the Buffalo Bills. He also ran three times for 10 yards.

Footballguys view: Beck never really had time to throw downfield and took too many sacks. He has another tough matchup next week and there's no guarantee that we won't see Rex Grossman again soon.

Redskins | John Beck solid in Week 7    Sun Oct 23, 05:29 PM

Washington Redskins QB John Beck went 22-for-37 for 279 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Week 7 against the Carolina Panthers.

Footballguys view: Beck also ran in a TD for the second straight game. He'll be a decent backup fantasy QB as long as he starts, but he won't get many better matchups than the Panthers.

Redskins | Offense to stay the same with John Beck    Fri Oct 21, 09:42 AM

Washington Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said his playcalling will not change because of the switch from QB Rex Grossman to QB John Beck as starting quarterback. During two fourth-quarter possessions in Week 6, Shanahan went to the bootleg several times, taking advantage of Beck's mobility. However, Shanahan said that overall, not much changes with the Redskins' schemes, and he won't need to lighten Beck's load by scaling back on pass plays.

Footballguys view: We'll see, as Beck seemed most comfortable in the empty backfield, five-wide sets last week. Shanahan has too good of an offensive mind to limit Beck by using him in exactly the same way he used Rex Grossman.

Redskins | John Beck likes loyalty of Santana Moss    Wed Oct 19, 09:47 PM

Washington Redskins WR Santana Moss disagreed with removing QB Rex Grossman after his abysmal Week 6 game against the Philadelphia, and QB John Beck, the new starter, likes the loyalty. 'I do like the loyalty. If I was a starting quarterback, I would want my teammates to feel that very same way about me,' Beck said. 'That's what makes those guys good players - because of that loyalty.'

Footballguys view: In other words, "You better defend me when Shanahan makes the change back to Grossman".

Redskins | John Beck to start in Week 7    Wed Oct 19, 09:32 AM

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan has informed his team that QB John Beck will start in Week 7, according to a team source.

Footballguys view: Not a surprise here. Rex Grossman had his chance to succeed and failed to play well. Beck was a Shanahan favorite when he came out of BYU and now gets the chance to prove himself as the team's starter. If your desperate at QB then grab Beck as a QB2 with limited upside. This week against Carolina might be the best matchup for Beck all season.

Footballguys view: We'll spare you the suspense. It's John Beck.

Redskins | Rex Grossman just plain gross    Sun Oct 16, 06:59 PM

Washington Redskins QB Rex Grossman, benched in the fourth quarter of the Week 6 loss against the Philadelphia Eagles, misfired on 13 of his 22 pass attempts. He finished with 143 yards, no touchdowns and four interceptions. Meanwhile, QB John Beck was 8 of 15 for 117 yards with one rushing TD in limited action.

Footballguys view: Grossman was given another chance by the football gods, and he revealed himself to be backup quality at best yet again. He said he had put his critics out of his head, but they probably started getting louder for him after the near-collapse vs. the Rams in week 4.

Redskins | Rex Grossman is in, but for how long?     Tue Sep 6, 02:50 PM

Washington Redskins QB Rex Grossman may be the starter entering the season, but his chances of making the full season as the starter are longer than the team's chances of making the playoffs in 2011, writes David Elfin, of CBSWashingtonDC.com. In the last 18 years, only three Washington quarterbacks - Jason Campbell (2008 and 2009), Brad Johnson (1999) and Gus Frerotte (1996) - were able to start all 16 games for the Redskins. At some point, it is believed QB John Beck will become the 20th starting quarterback for the Redskins in the last 19 years.

Footballguys view: Grossman will begin the year as the starter but we think John Beck could overtake him at some point during the season. After that we could see a QB carousel that will drive fantasy owners crazy.

Redskins | John Beck had his chance    Tue Sep 6, 02:50 PM

Washington Redskins QB John Beck's poor showing in the team's final preseason game likely sealed his fate with the coaching staff and led them to naming QB Rex Grossman as their starter entering the season.

Footballguys view: Beck is not the answer, and the Redskins know it. He could fill in as a starter when/if Grossman fails, but he's not the future for the franchise at the position. Beck and Grossman is one of the worst QB combinations in the league, and fantasy owners should not carry either one unless you're playing in a deep league.

Redskins | Starting QB competition continues     Fri Aug 26, 10:45 AM

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan declined to say following the team's preseason game Thursday, Aug. 25, which quarterback is in the lead, or even if he had seen enough to make a determination as to whom his starter for Week 1 will be. QBs Rex Grossman and John Beck are in competition for the job. 'I've been telling you guys from Day 1 and I'll keep on saying the same thing. We're going to evaluate them all the way through camp, all the way through the last preseason game and possibly up until the day before we play the Giants,' Shanahan said. 'It all depends on if someone separates themselves ... As I've said before, I feel very good about both quarterbacks, we can win with both of them. They've played well enough to date for people to see that, even outside our organization, and hopefully they keep on playing well.'

Footballguys view: This is probably best to keep both QBs motivated, but if we had to wager on one being the starter, we would pick Beck.

Redskins | Battle for starting quarterback role will continue    Fri Aug 26, 04:12 AM

Washington Redskins QBs John Beck and Rex Grossman will continue to battle for the starting job during the remainder of the preseason. Head coach Mike Shanahan said he feels very good about both quarterbacks and said the team can win with either one of them. 'I'm going to evaluate them all the way through camp, all the way through the last preseason game. Possibly all the way up to the day before we play the Giants. It all depends if somebody separates themselves,' Shanahan said of his quarterbacks. The two quarterbacks alternated two series during the third preseason game, with Grossman starting. Grossman hit eight of 15 passes for 112 yards while Beck hit six of 10 passes for 108 yards with an interception. The battle appears to be in a dead heat entering the final preseason game.

Footballguys view: Some who cover the team believe that Beck has the job regardless of the public message being put out there by the Redskins. We would draft Beck over Grossman on that belief even though Grossman has looked better so far.

Redskins | Will wait to name starting QB    Mon Aug 22, 05:15 PM

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said he will wait to name his Week 1 starting quarterback until right before the game. He said the competition between QBs John Beck and Rex Grossman is close and would be comfortable with either as the starting quarterback.

Footballguys view: Beck looked really good in his first start of the preseason but this decision could come down to the wire. We have a feeling the starter could bounce between Grossman and Beck all year long if they struggle to get a strong hold on the position.

Redskins | Undecided about starting QB Thursday    Sun Aug 21, 03:22 PM

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said he has not decided if QB John Beck or QB Rex Grossman will start the third preseason game Thursday, Aug. 25.

Footballguys view: Beck performed well in his first preseason action this week and is working to cement himself as the starter for the regular season. Just like the RB position in Washington, the starting QB could change more than once during the year.

Redskins | John Beck extremely efficient    Sat Aug 20, 01:04 AM

Washington Redskins QB John Beck completed 14 of his 17 pass attempts for 140 yards in the preseason game Friday, Aug. 19, against the Indianapolis Colts. Meanwhile, QB Rex Grossman was 7-for-12 with 88 yards, but he also tossed an interception.

Footballguys view: It sounded like the starting job was Beck's to lose before he even stepped on the field, now he is a sure thing to start week 1 if he is healthy. He might be a quality backup fantasy QB with low-end starter upside based on Rex Grossman's numbers at the end of last season.
