Cowboys | Richard Bartel to work out    Tue Dec 24, 12:49 PM

The Dallas Cowboys will work out free-agent QB Richard Bartel (Cardinals).

Footballguys view: Bartel has been with the Cowboys before. He knows the team and the system. They're searching for a backup behind Kyle Orton, and Bartel may be their choice.

Cardinals | Reach injury settlement with Richard Bartel    Mon Sep 3, 02:12 PM

The Arizona Cardinals have released QB Richard Bartel (shoulder) from Injured Reserve after the two sides reached an injury settlement.

Footballguys view: Bartel has bounced around the league for years now and will be free to sign with another team once he's healthy. The Cardinals will develop rookie Ryan Lindley as their 3rd QB behind John Skelton and Kevin Kolb.

Cardinals | Richard Bartel to enter in relief    Mon Aug 27, 11:50 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Richard Bartel will serve as the No. 2 quarterback in the preseason finale Thursday, Aug. 30, against the Denver Broncos, coming on in relief of QB Ryan Lindley.

Footballguys view: Bartel is competing with Lindley for the team's QB3 spot. The veteran has had some big preseason games in the past, and there was a time when some thought he could be the next Tony Romo. It's clear he won't ever reach that level, and could find it difficult to beat out Lindley. The rookie from San Diego State is inconsistent, but has an incredibly strong arm and good bucket accuracy.

Cardinals | Battle for No. 3 QB job    Sat Jul 21, 10:21 PM

The Arizona Cardinals not only have a battle for the No. 1 quarterback job between QBs Kevin Kolb and John Skelton, but veteran QB Richard Bartel is trying to hold off QB Ryan Lindley for the third quarterback job during training camp and the preseason.

Footballguys view: Bartel is a savvy veteran, but has bounced around the league during his pro career. He plays like a poor man's version of Tony Romo and has made some impressive plays for the Cardinals in the preseason. Lindley is the strong armed rookie with consistency problems. When Lindley is on he has incredible deep accuracy and can make all the bucket throws. However, he struggled as a senior at San Diego State after losing two WRs (Demarco Sampson, Vincent Brown) to the pros, and losing head coach Brady Hoke (gone to point at things in Michigan).

Cardinals | Ryan Lindley could have edge as No 3 QB    Mon Jul 2, 01:34 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Ryan Lindley may be the favorite over QB Richard Bartel for the No. 3 quarterback job because the team used s sixth-round draft choice on Lindley.

Footballguys view: Lindley had arguably the strongest arm in this draft class, but suffered through a poor senior season at San Diego State which caused his draft stock to fall. He's shown great downfield accuracy on bucket throws but needs to do so on a consistent basis. Bartel has bounced around the league for years but has made an impression in a reserve role with the Cardinals.

Cardinals | Ryan Lindley is intriguing project    Sat May 12, 10:52 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Ryan Lindley won't be challenging QB Kevin Kolb for the starting job, but quarterbacks coach John McNulty said Lindley has a 'big arm,' and figures to make the quarterback situation interesting this summer. While NcNulty wouldn't rule out Lindley battling QB John Skelton for the backup job, it's more likely Lindley's immediate competition is QB Richard Bartel for the No. 3 job. 'He's a big guy with a big arm,' McNulty said. 'He's not intimidated by anything out here.' Lindley struggled with accuracy in college, and he said the problem lies primarily in his footwork.

Footballguys view: Lindley is a fine developmental prospect. He had arguably the strongest arm in the entire 2012 NFL Draft. Lindley is not very mobile, but does have the ability to be very accurate on downfield bucket throws. In fact, Lindley's game is very similar to that of John Skelton.

Arizona Cardinals general manager Rod Graves said he believes the team can will with QBs Kevin Kolb, John Skelton and Richard Bartel but is willing to add another quarterback this offseason if it improves the team.

Cardinals | John Skelton lifted in Week 11    Sun Nov 20, 09:20 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB John Skelton completed just six of his 19 pass attempts in Week 11 for 99 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions in Week 11 against the San Francisco 49ers. QB Richard Bartel came on and completed 8 of 16 for 64 yards and his first NFL touchdown. There was a lot of speculation by fans on whether Skelton or QB Kevin Kolb (toe, foot) would start when the latter was healthy, but now the answer is rather obvious.

Footballguys view: Skelton appears to still be the starter for the week 12 tilt with the Rams if Kevin Kolb can't go, but obviously his leash is short.

Cardinals | Undecided about backup QB    Sat Sep 10, 06:07 PM

The Arizona Cardinals have not decided whether QB John Skelton or QB Richard Bartel will be the No. 2 quarterback for Week 1.

Footballguys view: This is mainly because of Skelton's ankle injury, because he is still #2 on the depth chart, although Bartel did have a good camp.

Cardinals | John Skelton ahead of Richard Bartel for No. 2 QB job    Wed Sep 7, 12:21 AM

Arizona Cardinals QB John Skelton is listed as the primary backup to starter QB Kevin Kolb, ahead of QB Richard Bartel, heading into Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers.

Footballguys view: Skelton was banged up in the preseason, so this could be an "in theory" pecking order, while Bartel would get in if Kolb goes down in week 1 like he did last year.

Cardinals | Richard Bartel in running for No. 3 QB job    Wed Jun 8, 02:57 AM

Arizona Cardinals QB Richard Bartel is considered a strong candidate for the team's third quarterback job, perhaps battling QB Max Hall for the job if the team trades for a signal caller once the lockout is resolved. Hall might end up on the practice squad.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals are high on the potential of Bartel as a reserve QB. He's bounced around the league during his career but has good athleticism and arm strength. Some feel he could even challenge John Skelton for the second-string job this year. Arizona is likely to add either Kyle Orton or Kevin Kolb via trade to be their starting QB this year.

Cardinals | Two QBs share reps Wednesday    Wed Dec 8, 03:11 PM

Arizona Cardinals QBs John Skelton and Richard Bartel shared reps with the first-team offense during practice Wednesday, Dec. 8, reports Kent Somers, of The Arizona Republic. Head coach Ken Whisenhunt said he is not ready to name a starter for Week 14.

Footballguys view: Skelton is a rookie, but some felt he could be groomed as the QB of the future when he was drafted out of Fordham this year. Bartel has bounced around the league, and is fresh off a stint in the UFL. We give the edge to Skelton here because of his familiarity of the offense.

Cardinals | Two to compete for starting QB job for now    Wed Dec 8, 10:11 AM

Arizona Cardinals QB John Skelton and Richard Bartel will compete for the starting quarterback job during practice this week while QB Derek Anderson (concussion) tries to pass his concussion test, reports AZCardinals.com's Darren Urban. It is not known if Anderson will be in consideration to start in Week 14 even if does pass all of his tests.

Footballguys view: Bartel was just signed this week and doesn't know the system in Arizona. Skelton was drafted this year, and some thought he would be groomed as their QB of the future. He is tall, has a strong arm, and has enough athleticism to keep a play alive with his feet.

Redskins | Two expected to compete for No. 3 QB job    Tue Jul 6, 03:31 PM

Washington Redskins QB Richard Bartel and QB Colt Brennan expected to compete for the team's No. 3 quarterback job during training camp, according to CSNWashington.com's Rich Tandler.

Footballguys view: Bartel has bounced around during his NFL career, but there was a time that some in the scouting community thought he could develop into the next Tony Romo. Brennan has looked good at times during the preseason, but needs to work on his consistency as a quarterback if he wants to make the final roster.

Redskins | QB Bartel sticking around under Shanahan    Thu Jun 3, 01:34 PM

Rich Tandler, from CSNWashington.com, reports nobody is quite sure what to think about Richard Bartel, except that almost everyone is wondering why he's still around. This is not a knock on his ability; in the limited times he's displayed what he can do in shorts and T-shirts, he hasn't embarrassed himself. It's just surprising that Shanahan hasn't replaced him with a handpicked developmental quarterback. Perhaps the coach sees something in him.

Footballguys view: Richard Bartel signed with the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2007. Some thought he would develop for a few years as a backup like Tony Romo did, but Dallas let him go in 2008. He's bounced around to Cleveland, Jacksonville, and now is with the Redskins. The former Tartleton State star may have caught the eye of Mike Shanahan, but is still a long shot to make the final roster. He'll most likely have to stick around on the practice squad.

The Browns have also terminated the contract of SS Hamza Abdullah, RB Noah Herron, CB Corey Ivy, WR David Patten and TE Aaron Walker.

Footballguys view: Richard Bartel, once thought of as the next Tony Romo in Dallas, could be added to the practice squad if he clears waivers. Of all the wide receivers released by the Browns, we like the upside of rookie Jordan Norwood. He has good body control, football intelligence, and is a fairly savvy route runner.   Browns | Harrell leaves without contract    Tue May 5, 09:11 AM

Mary Kay Cabot, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports the Cleveland Browns were impressed with undrafted free-agent QB Graham Harrell (Texas Tech) and might like to add him to the roster in the future, a source said. The offensive staff felt Harrell, who participated in the team's rookie camp on a tryout basis, picked up the system quickly and has great potential. However, the Browns let him leave town without a contract, in part because it currently has four quarterbacks on the roster: QB Brady Quinn, QB Derek Anderson, QB Brett Ratliff and QB Richard Bartel.

Footballguys view: I wonder what Texas Tech Head Coach Mike Leach will have to say about this. Leach blasted Eric Mangini in the media because he thought the Browns head coach had leaked a negative story about Tech WR Michael Crabtree which led to him falling down draft boards. All 4 of the QBs on the Browns roster are much more talented than Harrell, and unless injuries strike it seems unlikely that he would make the active roster.
