Patriots | Montee Ball cut Tue Feb 9, 05:42 PM
New England Patriots RB Montee Ball was released Tuesday, Feb. 9.
Footballguys view: A second-round pick (Broncos) in the 2013 NFL draft, Ball was released by the Broncos after the preseason and he was out of the league most of the year. The Patriots picked him up on their practice squad, but Ball was reportedly out of shape and made no positive impression. Ball was arrested on a domestic-violence charge last Thursday. |

Patriots | Montee Ball signs Tue Dec 15, 03:42 PM
Free-agent RB Montee Ball (Broncos) signed with the New England Patriots Tuesday, Dec. 15.
Footballguys view: Ball was a bust with the Broncos, and we're not expecting him to turn it around with the Patriots. He's on the Pats practice squad, but Ball was reportedly unimpressive when he worked out for the Packers a little over a week ago. |

Bears | Chicago could sign Montee Ball Mon Nov 2, 03:43 PM
Free-agent RB Montee Ball (Broncos) is being considered by the Chicago Bears in light of RB Matt Forte's (knee) injury.
Footballguys view: Ball was a second-round pick in 2013 by John Fox when he was with the Broncos. He has been working out and staying in shape in hopes of getting another chance after the Broncos cut him earlier this year. By our calculations, only the Patriots and the Falcons have shown interest in Ball. He knows the Adam Gase system, and Ball could immediately give the Bears veteran depth. |

Patriots | Several players work out Tue Sep 29, 05:28 PM
Free-agents RB Montee Ball (Broncos), TEs Brandon Bostick (Vikings) and Brian Leonhardt (Raiders), QB Zac Dysert (Texans), RB Darrin Reaves (Panthers) and TE Konrad Reuland (Ravens) worked out for the New England Patriots Tuesday, Sept. 29, according to a source.
Footballguys view: The Patriots are likely just updating their emergency list here. It's interesting to see Montee Ball get a look from the Patriots. Ball failed in Denver, but it's been a bit surprising to see him out of work for a few weeks. Perhaps some team is going to add him in the near future. |

NFL | Montee Ball unclaimed off waivers Mon Sep 7, 09:34 PM
Free-agent RB Montee Ball (Broncos) was unclaimed off waivers and he is now an unrestricted free agent.
Footballguys view: A second-round pick in the 2013 NFL draft, Ball failed to impress during the preseason. He's one of the most productive runners in FBS history, but college success doesn't always translate into pro stardom. Ball should be drawing interest from at least a few teams now that he's on the open market. Reports indicate that Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago and Oakland could be interested. |

Falcons | Interested in Montee Ball Mon Sep 7, 04:11 PM
Free-agent RB Montee Ball (Broncos) has drawn interest from the Atlanta Falcons.
Footballguys view: With Tevin Coleman and Devonta Freeman already in place, we just can't see a spot for Ball. The zone-blocking system in Denver didn't work for Ball, so why would the Falcons system (similar in design) work? The Broncos don't have a world-class offensive line, but they look like the Cowboys O-Line from the 90s compared to what Atlanta has up front. |

Broncos | Montee Ball waived Sun Sep 6, 02:10 PM
Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball was waived Sunday, Sept. 6.
Footballguys view: Ball has been disappointing except for a few moments since being a second-round pick in 2013. Dallas as supposedly interested, but they have traded for Christine Michael. Ball might have to wait for an injury in-season to get a call. |

Cowboys | Dallas discussing Montee Ball Fri Sep 4, 02:37 PM
The Dallas Cowboys and Denver Broncos are discussing a trade that would involve shipping Broncos RB Montee Ball to Dallas.
Footballguys view: Ian Rapoport has squashed this rumor. That being said, the Cowboys could just be waiting to see if Ball gets cut. Either way, if he can't make the Broncos roster, it's hard to be excited about him, even in Dallas. |

Broncos | Montee Ball lays an egg Fri Sep 4, 02:12 AM
Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball rushed 16 times for 27 yards in the final preseason game Thursday, Sept. 3. RB Kapri Bibbs tallied 27 yards on six rushes.
Footballguys view: Ball could get cut two years after being drafted in the second round. The Cowboys liked him a lot in that 2013 draft, so he could end up in Dallas. |

Broncos | Montee Ball fighting for spot? Thu Sep 3, 09:29 PM
Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball and RB Kapri Bibbs could be battling to be the final running back on the roster.
Footballguys view: As we've talked about before, it's going to be a fistfight. At least nobody is throwing a broken pool cue between them and offering a job to them. Dark Knight jokes aside, these two are buried behind Ronnie Hillman and RB1 C.J. Anderson. |

Broncos | Two Denver RBs will see most work Thu Sep 3, 05:06 PM
Denver Broncos RBs Montee Ball and Kapri Bibbs will see the majority of work in the Denver backfield Thursday, Sept. 3, against the Arizona Cardinals.
Footballguys view: We've heard this is the battle for one roster spot. Two men enter, one man leaves....and goes home unemployed. We're leaning towards Ball, but he hasn't impressed yet. Neither of these two yahoos are worthy of fantasy value. If you want a Denver running back, it's C.J. Anderson as an RB1. |

Broncos | Two Denver RBs fighting for spot Tue Sep 1, 02:18 PM
Denver Broncos RBs Montee Ball and Kapri Bibbs aren't guaranteed a roster spot at this point. They will each play this weekend for one final audition.
Footballguys view: That's rough for a guy like Ball who was just drafted in the second round two years ago. However, CJ Anderson has played very well and Ronnie Hillman has looked improved again, so it's Thunderdome for these two backs. At the end of the day, Anderson is your RB1 here and everyone else is a deep bench guy at best. |

Broncos | Montee Ball losing ground? Mon Aug 24, 05:13 PM
Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball has already lost the backup running back role to RB Ronnie Hillman. RB Juwan Thompson may also surpass Ball in the near future, according to Mike Klis of 9news.com.
Footballguys view: Ball has fallen to third on the depth chart right now. He's looked good in practice, but that hasn't carried over to the preseason. Ronnie Hillman has 120 yards on only 16 carries in two games, while Ball is averaging only 2.5 yards per carry in the preseason. C.J. Anderson is the primary back, and Hillman is now his primary backup. |

Broncos | Anderson's shoulder bang minor Sat Aug 8, 06:57 PM
Cecil Lammey, from ESPN Denver and Footballguys.com, reports that Denver Broncos running back C.J. Anderson's shoulder bang is considered minor. Head coach Gary Kubiak said after practice, "He got his shoulder banged and he wanted to go, but I told Greek [Head Athletic Trainer Steve Antonopulos] to take him out."
Footballguys view: They are going to be cautious with all injuries at training camp. The Broncos are going to use Anderson as their bellcow back this year, and fantasy owners should be excited about his potential. His current ADP is a late-first or early-second round pick in most fantasy leagues. With Anderson missing the end of practice, Montee Ball received the first-team reps. |

Broncos | Montee Ball looking to rebound Wed Aug 5, 11:13 PM
Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball lost the starter's job due to ineffectiveness and multiple injuries last season. He heads into the season in a young, talented stable of backs, but RB C.J. Anderson is expected to be the leader of the group.
Footballguys view: Ball wasn't himself last year. An appendectomy in the preseason caused him to look slow and banged up. A groin injury later in the year knocked him out for most of the season. Ball is back at full strength, and he's been looking good at camp--but he is clearly behind C.J. Anderson in the pecking order. |

Broncos | Montee Ball likely in backup role Mon Jul 6, 08:20 AM
Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball is expected to receive seven or eight carries a game, while RB C.J. Anderson serves as the bellcow with 18 per game, in the opinion of beat writer Troy E. Renck.
Footballguys view: Ball is just a handcuff to Anderson at this point, and Ronnie Hillman could share the job with him if Anderson does go down. Ball's dynasty stock has never been lower, so if you're still a believer, now is the time to act. In redraft, he's only worth a pick in deeper leagues or if you have misgivings about Anderson. |

Broncos | Window closed for Montee Ball? Sun Jun 21, 08:52 PM
Troy E. Renck, from the Denver Post, believes that the "window has closed" for Montee Ball to prove himself as the team's starter. "If C.J Anderson stays healthy, his commitment is at a new level," Renck said. "I don't see Ball getting the chance to prove that anymore. I think the window closed on him last year." "It's a bellcow offense, the back doesn't rotate in and out."
Footballguys view: Strong statements here from one of the best Broncos beat writers. Note how he also includes that Kubiak is looking for one back to be the bellcow. Ball had hoped he could end up in a 1A/1B situation this year, but that may not be the case. Anderson is the starter, he's the frontrunner and he's the better back. We'll see if he can cement the job in training camp. |

Broncos | C.J. Anderson starts as top RB Tue Jun 16, 02:27 PM
Denver Broncos RB C.J. Anderson will begin training camp as the starting running back. Head coach Gary Kubiak said it's his job to hang on to. Kubiak also added that RBs Montee Ball and Ronnie Hillman have had solid offseasons and will make the running back battle competitive.
Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Anderson proved last year that he could be a quality starter and full-time back. He's a natural fit for the zone-blocking system the Broncos have implemented up front this year. Anderson is more powerful than Ball and Hillman, and he's a better receiver out of the backfield. |

Broncos | Montee Ball expecting big role Sun Jun 14, 10:30 PM
Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball has performed well during offseason activities, and he described the situation at running back as a '1-A and 1-B' rotation between he and RB C.J. Anderson.
Footballguys view: Anderson is at the top of the depth chart right now. Ball is his backup, but expect him to push Anderson for the job in training camp. Anderson is the better fit in the zone-blocking system, but Ball was the high (second round) draft pick. We'll see this battle unfold in August. |

Broncos | Montee Ball determined this offseason Wed Jun 10, 06:25 PM
Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball seems more motivated this offseason after suffering an early-season groin injury and losing his starting job to RB C.J. Anderson. Coaches have noticed that Ball is more focused following a tumultuous 2014 campaign. Ball said he's ready to be the next man up and is determined to win his starting spot back.
Footballguys view: Ball has been impressive out at Broncos minicamp according to our very own Cecil Lammey. The problem for him is that Anderson has looked better. This battle bears watching over training camp, but it's Anderson's job to lose. Head coach Gary Kubiak wants to find one bellcow to be the featured back, and Anderson can fit that role. We like Anderson as a low-end RB1 (early 2nd-round pick), but know that he has the upside to lead the league in rushing this season. |

Broncos | Duo splits first-team carries Fri May 29, 09:07 AM
Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball and C.J. Anderson are splitting first-team repetitions during organized team activities.
Footballguys view: Anderson's the starter at this point, and it's his job to lose. Ball is finally healthy after a groin injury cut his 2014 season short. Unless Anderson fumbles the job away or gets hurt, we can't see Ball overtaking him for the starting job. At practice on Wednesday, Ball looked odd in the zone-blocking system while Anderson looked like a natural. The lead back in Denver (under new head coach Gary Kubiak) is going to be a RB1 for fantasy owners. |

Broncos | Montee Ball eyes starting role Thu Apr 30, 03:22 PM
Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball is confident that he will regain the lead-back role with the team, but admitted that RB C.J. Anderson deserves the job right now. Ball is currently behind Anderson and RB Ronnie Hillman on the depth chart. Ball blames an appendectomy in August of last year for weakening his core, which then led to a torn right groin that put him on Injured Reserve. He had just 172 yards on 55 carries and a touchdown in 2014. Ball started feeling better in February and has spent the last three months working on his flexibility with a personal trainer.
Footballguys view: He's going to have to fight off CJ Anderson, and that won't be easy. Anderson had a stellar 2014 and Ball didn't. He should be able to overcome Hillman easily, but Anderson looks like the favorite to win the lead back job in 2015. |

Broncos | Denver RB competition fierce Fri Mar 27, 07:25 PM
Denver Broncos RB C.J. Anderson, who finished 2014 with 648 rushing yards in the last six games, will enter the 2015 season at the top of the running back depth chart, according to new head coach Gary Kubiak. However, competition will be fierce for touches in training camp, with RBs Montee Ball and Ronnie Hillman still around. Ball vowed 'to get back my job' at the end of last season after landing on the Injured Reserve. Hillman is a wild card, and he has yet to top 106 carries in any one season. RB Juwan Thompson is a possibility as a fullback/running back hybrid.
Footballguys view: Anderson enters camp as the starter, and he's the best fit--a near-perfect fit--for the zone-blocking system. Ball will look better in this system, but he needs to stop dancing in the backfield if he wants to play up to his potential. We think Hillman is a bad fit for the new system, and his role may be quite small in 2015. |

Broncos | Montee Ball placed on IR Sat Dec 13, 02:07 PM
Denver Broncos RB Montee Ball (groin) was placed on season-ending Reserve/Injured Saturday, Dec. 13. SS Quinton Carter (knee) was also placed on season-ending Reserve/Injured.
Footballguys view: This was just an off year for Ball. First, the appendectomy that knocked him out for most of the preseason. Then, the groin injury that ended his season. Ball will be healthy for the start of next season, but now he'll have to compete for playing time as a backup. For the Broncos it stays the C.J. Anderson show - and next to "Guardians of the Galaxy" or maybe "The Flash" it's the best show on TV. Anderson could keep this job next year as well, but for now he'll do as a RB1 against San Diego. |
