Broncos | Lance Ball shown the door    Fri Aug 30, 09:23 PM

Broncos | Jeremiah Johnson having strong camp    Wed Jul 31, 11:36 PM

Denver Broncos RB Jeremiah Johnson is having a fantasy training camp, but he is competing at a very tough position, with the likes of RBs Ronnie Hillman, Montee Ball, Knowshon Moreno, FB Jacob Hester, Lance Ball and even C.J. Anderson ahead of him in the pecking order.

Footballguys view: Johnson always has a strong training camp only to fade if he gets a shot in the regular season. He can burst outside and is good in the open field. However, he's swallowed up when running inside.

Broncos | Four to compete for No. 4 RB job    Wed May 8, 01:33 PM

Denver Broncos RBs Lance Ball, Jeremiah Johnson, Mario Fannin and C.J. Anderson are expected to compete for the No. 4 running back job during offseason workouts and training camp.

Footballguys view: Ball is the best all-purpose RB in this group. He's good on special teams as well. Johnson is quick and explosive but has failed to impress enough to get on the field. Fannin is big (224 pounds) and fast (4.38 40-yard dash) but hasn't stayed healthy during his pro career after going undrafted out of Auburn in 2011. Anderson was a UDFA for the Broncos this year and has a powerful lower body and good vision.

Broncos | Lance Ball signs tender    Mon Apr 8, 05:28 PM

Denver Broncos restricted free-agent RB Lance Ball has signed his one-year tender offer. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Ball gives the team veteran depth at the RB position but his roster spot is not guaranteed. He's a versatile RB who can contribute as a runner, receiver out of the backfield, and also as a special teams player.

Broncos | Have depth at RB    Mon Jan 7, 03:47 PM

The Denver Broncos have employed a next-man-up attitude at running back this year after RB Willis McGahee (knee) went down, and the team has been successful with RB Knowshon Moreno in his absence. Their 114.5 yards rushing per game ranks seventh in the league. RB Ronnie Hillman fumbled early in the team's Week 17 game and was benched for the rest of the game in favor of RBs Lance Ball and Jacob Hester. Denver still managed to run for 172 yards against the Kansas City Chiefs in that contest. 'If you want to say one thing that's great about this team, it's that nobody's selfish,' Ball said. 'That's what you need to have a championship team.'

Footballguys view: McGahee is allowed to return if the Broncos play in the AFC Championship Game. If he does play then he will serve as the primary backup behind Moreno.

Broncos | Week 15 Inactives    Sun Dec 16, 11:30 AM

The Denver Broncos have declared WR Andre Caldwell, QB Caleb Hanie, OG Chris Kuper, TE Julius Thomas, RB Lance Ball, DL Sealver Siliga, CB Tracy Porter inactive for Week 15.

Footballguys view: Kuper being out is a hit for the Broncos pass protection, but not enough to downgrade Peyton Manning or the Denver passing game.

Broncos | Great opportunity for Knowshon Moreno     Thu Nov 22, 12:11 PM

Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning said he sees the injury to RB Willis McGahee (knee, leg) as a great opportunity for RB Knowshon Moreno. Moreno will split duties with RBs Ronnie Hillman and Lance Ball. 'He hasn't played, but he will be a part of it. It's going to be a three-man committee,' Manning said. 'Hey, this is the NFL. You are kind of used to where it doesn't matter what year you are or how old you are. If you're on an NFL roster, you're expected to go in there and contribute and do your job.'

Footballguys view: Moreno should be the third back in the Broncos committee. Rookie Ronnie Hillman should be the starter and will get a bulk of the workload. Lance Ball could get some short yardage work, while Moreno will get around 5 touches this week.

Broncos | Trio to replace Willis McGahee     Thu Nov 22, 07:27 AM

Denver Broncos RBs Ronnie Hillman, Lance Ball and Knowshon Moreno will replace RB Willis McGahee's (knee, leg) carries during his absence.

Footballguys view: Hillman will be the lead back with Lance Ball working as the short yardage back. Moreno will only get a small handful of carries in his first game back after being inactive for 8 weeks.

Broncos | Knowshon Moreno to see increased role    Tue Nov 20, 09:09 PM

Denver Broncos team president John Elway said Tuesday, Nov. 20, that RB Knowshon Moreno will be in the mix going forward with RB Willis McGahee (knee) sidelined.

Footballguys view: Our very own Cecil Lammey believes the team will use a RBBC with rookie Ronnie Hillman leading the way. Lance Ball should be the team's short-yardage and goalline back while Moreno could get a few snaps as a change of pace back.

Broncos | Ronnie Hillman likely the replacement    Tue Nov 20, 03:04 PM

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman will likely get the first crack at carries after the loss of RB Willis McGahee (knee, leg). However, pass blocking will remain the biggest factor in which running back sees the majority of work with McGahee out. 'For a smaller guy, he's pretty feisty in protection,' head coach John Fox said about Hillman. 'That's the thing that's always hard to learn for a rookie.' RBs Lance Ball and Knowshon Moreno could also be mixed in. Moreno has been inactive for the last eight games but hasn't been injured.

Footballguys view: Hillman has big play ability because of his speed. He's a threat to score every time he touches the ball and can make plays in space at the second level. He'll lead the RBBC for Denver. We expect Ball to get the short yardage work and Moreno will get a few touches (around 5) as well.

Updating a previous item, Denver Broncos RB Willis McGahee (knee) does not believe the knee injury he suffered in Week 11 is serious, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. McGahee is scheduled to have an MRI Monday, Nov. 19.

Footballguys view: Without McGahee RB Ronnie Hillman would be the team's starter. The backup would be RB Lance Ball.

Broncos | Lance Ball has bruised ribs    Mon Aug 27, 11:41 PM

Updating a previous report, Denver Broncos RB Lance Ball (ribs) suffered bruised ribs in the preseason game Sunday, Aug. 26, against the San Francisco 49ers.

Footballguys view: Ball plays like a bowling ball out on the football field. He dishes out a lot of punishment but also absorbs punishment in the process. Ball should make the team as a do everything veteran option.

Broncos | Offense shows new wrinkles Sunday     Mon Aug 27, 07:04 AM

The Denver Broncos mixed up their offensive looks during their preseason game Sunday, Aug. 26, throwing up some no-huddle with four-wide receiver sets. RB Lance Ball lined up out wide to run routes like a receiver in the formation.

Footballguys view: Expect guys like Ball, Ronnie Hillman, and Knowhson Moreno to be worked in as receivers out of the backfield from time to time. Denver looked really sharp on Sunday.

Broncos | Ronnie Hillman projected as No. 2 running back    Tue Jul 31, 03:01 PM

Denver Broncos rookie RB Ronnie Hillman has seen action in training camp on passing-downs. He has shown the necessary speed during practice to quickly get to the corner. Hillman's snaps have come in rotation with RBs Lance Ball and Jeremiah Johnson, which follows starting RB Willis McGahee in drills. Hillman projects to be the team's change-of-pace back behind McGahee.

Footballguys view: Hillman fits better in a Peyton Manning-led offense than Willis McGahee. He has the foot speed to run the stretch play and he's a better receiver out of the backfield than McGahee. He might take some time to win over John Fox, who tends to favor veterans, but Hillman is a perfect late-round running back to put on your bench for the first month or two of the season while his role and game grow.

Broncos | Lance Ball seeing first-team snaps    Tue Jul 31, 01:05 PM

Denver Broncos RB Lance Ball has been given plenty of reps with the first-string offense during the first five days of training camp.

Footballguys view: Ronnie Hillman will have to overcome head coach John Fox's famous bias against rookies. Ball is a solid all-around back who should stick on the team as a third stringer, but Hillman's young legs will move him up the depth chart as soon as he improves in pass protection.

Broncos | Lance Ball rushes for 64 yards, TD    Sun Dec 18, 10:23 PM

Denver Broncos RB Lance Ball carried 11 times for 64 yards and a touchdown in Week 15 against the New England Patriots, getting more playing time with RB Willis McGahee (leg) in and out of the lineup due to injury. Ball also had two receptions for 41 yards, but he lost a key fumble, too.

Footballguys view: Ball ran with stubbornness and efficiency and ended up posting a good fantasy day for anyone that was forced into playing him. He'll be an excellent sleeper flex or even RB2 if Willis McGahee can't go or is limited on Saturday.

Broncos | Lance Ball productive in Week 11    Fri Nov 18, 12:38 AM

Denver Broncos RB Lance Ball had five carries for 18 yards, and he added two catches for 26 yards, in the Week 11 win against the New York Jets Thursday, Nov. 17. Ball was actually more efficient than starter RB Willis McGahee (hamstring), who averaged just 1.5 yards per carry on 12 rushes.

Footballguys view: Ball's stubborn straight-ahead style is a good fit for this offense. He should be rostered as a potentially valuable backup if Willis McGahee's hamstring problems flare up.

Broncos | Willis McGahee not a lock to play    Tue Nov 15, 03:31 PM

Denver Broncos RB Willis McGahee (hamstring) went through warmups and stretching Tuesday, Nov. 15, but didn't take part in individual drills in practice open to the media, and he is questionable to play in the team's Week 11 game versus the New York Jets Thursday, Nov. 17.

Footballguys view: If McGahee can't play we'll see the Broncos use Lance Ball as their starter. They just activated Jeremiah Johnson off the practice squad and he could see some time behind Ball.

Broncos | Lance Ball receives plenty of work    Sun Nov 13, 05:49 PM

Denver Broncos RB Lance Ball rushed for 96 yards on 30 carries against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 10. Ball received most of the carries because of injuries to RBs Willis McGahee (hamstring) and Knowshon Moreno (knee).

Footballguys view: Ball became the #1 back by process of elimination and stubbornly ran north-south, fitting right in the retro gameplan for the Broncos. He could start again next week, but the matchup is much tougher against the Jets.

Broncos | Lance Ball runs for 63 yards in Week 8    Sun Oct 30, 08:04 PM

Denver Broncos RB Lance Ball rushed six times for 63 yards in Week 8 against the Detroit Lions, and he added a four-yard reception. Ball also lost one fumble.

Broncos | Expected to have two RBs Week 8    Sat Oct 29, 03:16 PM

The Denver Broncos are expected to go into Week 8 with only RBs Knowshon Moreno and Lance Ball as the running backs.

Broncos | Willis McGahee update    Mon Oct 24, 05:54 PM

Updating a previous report, Denver Broncos RB Willis McGahee (finger) will undergo surgery on the fourth metacarpal of his index finger later this week.

Broncos | Willis McGahee has surgery    Mon Oct 24, 03:36 PM

Denver Broncos head coach John Fox said RB Willis McGahee (hand) underwent surgery on a fractured fourth metacarpal in his right hand Monday, Oct. 24, and he will not be available for the team's Week 8 game versus the Detroit Lions. It's also unlikely that he'll be ready for Week 9 against the Oakland Raiders. RBs Knowshon Moreno and Lance Ball are expected to share the workload with McGahee out.

Footballguys view: Missing McGahee will hurt the Broncos offense. McGahee was running hard all season, and was set for another 100-yard performance when he got hurt against the Dolphins. Moreno and Ball are not exciting fantasy options because they're not the same caliber of runner that McGahee is. The Broncos may choose to activate RB Jeremiah Johnson off the practice squad to be the third-string back behind Moreno and Ball.

Footballguys view: If either of Correll Buckhalter or Knowshon Moreno is not ready for week 1 or get re-injured in the first four weeks of the season, Ball will see significant playing time, which would be good news for the numbers of Kyle Orton and the Broncos passing game.

Denver Broncos RB Lance Ball is expected to start at tailback Sunday, Aug. 15, due to injuries at the running back position, reports Jeff Legwold, of The Denver Post.

Footballguys view: We wouldn't rush out to add Ball in deep dynasty leagues. If somehow he is still atop the depth chart in a few weeks, the Broncos will surely make some moves at RB to upgrade the position, because it will mean that both LenDale White and Justin Fargas have crapped out in training camp.
