Cardinals | John Carlson impressing    Thu Jul 3, 04:14 PM

Arizona Cardinals TE John Carlson has been the tight end who impressed the most during organized team activities and minicamp. Head coach Bruce Arians complimented Carlson's ability to pick up the system quickly, his speed and hands, and he considers Carlson an adequate blocker. Arians wants physical tight ends who are capable blockers. Carlson will compete for targets with TEs Rob Housler, Jake Ballard and Troy Niklas (hand).

Footballguys view: Carlson had a brief moment with the Seattle Seahawks where he looked like he could be an impact player but he soon faded into the background, relegated to blocking duties. It was much the same in Minnesota, though he was also stuck behind Kyle Rudolph and only really saw some work when Rudolph was hurt last year. The Cardinals haven't had a good pass-catching tight end in a long time, but there is danger here as our own Andrew Garda reported from the Combine that head coach Bruce Arians wants his tight ends to block first and catch second. So Carlson might find himself blocking a lot this year, perhaps one reason why most of our staff sees him as no better than a low-end TE3.

Cardinals | Expected to keep four TEs    Thu Jun 12, 06:48 PM

The Arizona Cardinals are expected to keep four tight ends on their roster. Head coach Bruce Arians feels the team probably has too many legitimate options to keep them all. TEs John Carlson, Jake Ballard, Rob Housler and Troy Niklas (hand) are the favorites to make the roster.

Cardinals | Jake Ballard officially signed    Tue Mar 11, 04:29 PM

The Arizona Cardinals have officially re-signed restricted free-agent TE Jake Ballard (Cardinals) to a one-year deal. The contract's financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Ballard signed with the Cardinals last November and hauled in seven passes for 75 yards and two touchdowns. He'll compete for playing time this year, but we're not going to see him be much of a fantasy factor.

Cardinals | Like Jake Ballard    Sat Mar 8, 10:43 PM

Cardinals | Jake Ballard will be active    Sat Nov 9, 12:19 PM

Arizona Cardinals TE Jake Ballard will be active for the team's Week 10 game but is not expected to be a big part of the offense.

Footballguys view: Ballard has struggled to impress since leaving the Giants in free agency after the 2011 season. We're not expecting him to be much of a fantasy factor, and aren't that intrigued by him as a deep dynasty prospect either.

Chiefs | Jake Ballard worked out    Wed Oct 23, 03:42 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs recently worked out free-agent TE Jake Ballard (Patriots).

Patriots | Cut Jake Ballard    Fri Aug 30, 12:56 PM

The New England Patriots cut Jake Ballard Friday, Aug. 30.

Footballguys view: Add this to Daniel Fells getting released and it doesn't seem like Rob Gronkowski is going to start the season on the PUP list. He might still miss a few games, but taking Gronk in the fourth round is looking pretty smart right now.

Patriots | Zach Sudfeld will have his chance    Wed Aug 21, 06:15 PM

New England Patriots TE Zach Sudfeld looks like a lock to enter Week 1 as the team's No. 1 tight end if TE Rob Gronkowski (back, forearm) starts the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list. Sudfeld is 6-foot-7, 260 pounds, which is almost the exact same size as Gronkowski. Sudfeld caught a touchdown pass the team's preseason game last weekend in the red zone on a pattern that Gronkowski has run before. Sudfeld displayed nice run-after-the-catch skills on another play later in the same preseason game. TE Jake Ballard is healthy and has been consistent in camp, too, and his role as a hybrid tight end in the past is similar to Gronkowski.

Footballguys view: Sudfeld plays a bit like Dennis Pitta (Ravens). He can get open on underneath routes and does a good job looking passes into his hands. Sudfeld isn't the greatest after the catch but can make contested catches with ease. We like him as a late-round TE2 with upside.

Patriots | Jake Ballard, Zach Sudfeld appear safe    Mon Aug 19, 04:00 PM

New England Patriots TEs Jake Ballard and Zach Sudfeld appear to have solid grips on roster spots at this point.

Footballguys view: Ballard is the backup behind Rob Gronkowski as the team's in line TE. Sudfeld is taking over in the move TE role vacated by Aaron Hernandez. We like Sudfeld as an upside TE2 late in fantasy drafts.

Patriots | Zach Sudfeld taking first-team reps    Wed Aug 14, 07:08 PM

New England Patriots TE Zach Sudfeld took the majority of first-team repetitions in practice Tuesday, Aug. 13, while TEs Daniel Fells and Jake Ballard were on the sidelines. Fells and Ballard are now battling for a roster spot.

Footballguys view: Sudfeld has TE1 upside in any week that Rob Gronkowski is out, and he is an excellent handcuff to Gronk if you take the former #1 fantasy tight end. This relationship looks like Dallas Clark and Jacob Tamme's from a few years back, where the backup will only be 75% or less of the starter, but that will still be enough to make him a very good fantasy tight end in his own right. If Sudfeld is as good as he has reportedly been in practices, he might even cement a spot in the two tight end set that the Pats made so lethal in recent years.

Patriots | Jake Ballard falling behind competition?    Fri Aug 9, 02:48 PM

New England Patriots TE Zach Sudfeld has looked good in practice, and TE Daniel Fells has reportedly had a solid training camp. TE Jake Ballard, on the other hand, has looked stiff at times, and has fallen behind in the team's competition.

Footballguys view: Ballard doesn't seem to be fully recovered from the knee injury that cost him all of 2012. He's being outplayed by Fells and undrafted rookie Zach Sudfeld. Ballard is squarely on the roster bubble and is in danger of getting cut.

Patriots | Jake Ballard having problems with recovery    Mon Aug 5, 07:01 PM

New England Patriots TE Jake Ballard (knee) has slowed down over the last few days and was not moving around as before because he is still recovering from knee surgery. His absence has allowed TE Zach Sudfeld to perform well during practice.

Footballguys view: Our very own Cecil Lammey watched Sudfeld during the week of practice at the Shrine Game earlier this year and came away impressed. Some in the scouting community compared Sudfeld to a poor man's version of Dennis Pitta (Ravens) because of his strong hands. Sudfeld had durability concerns in college but if healthy could win the TE2 job behind Rob Gronkowski.

Patriots | Jake Ballard could on bubble    Mon Aug 5, 03:38 PM

New England Patriots TE Jake Ballard has struggled during training camp and could be on the roster bubble.

Footballguys view: Ballard still hasn't fully recovered from the knee injury that cost him all of the 2012 season. He's looked rigid in practice and is not impressing at camp. Undrafted rookie Zach Sudfeld (Nevada) is an interesting name to keep in mind when considering backup TEs for the Patriots.

Patriots | Jake Ballard sits    Sun Aug 4, 04:50 PM

New England Patriots TE Jake Ballard (knee) sat out of practice Saturday, Aug. 3, due to soreness in his surgically repaired knee.

Footballguys view: Ballard was everyone's first thought as a beneficiary when Aaron Hernandez was released and Rob Gronkowski underwent surgery after surgery this offseason, but his current not-so-great physical state shows that not every ACL recovery is a given. He's off of our fantasy radar and has been replaced by UDFA rookie Zach Sudfeld as the deep sleeper at tight end in New England.

Patriots | Two pass physicals    Tue Jul 23, 05:11 PM

New England Patriots TE Jake Ballard (knee) and FS Kanorris Davis (undisclosed) both passed their physicals and have been taken off the physically unable to perform list.

Footballguys view: Ballard has not impressed so far in camp. Some feel he's in danger of making the final roster if he doesn't stop looking so rigid on the practice field.

Patriots | Jake Ballard may not make team    Tue Jul 23, 10:10 AM

New England Patriots TE Jake Ballard (knee) has looked stiff and lacking fluidity in camp, and he's not a lock to make the team.

Footballguys view: An important note for fantasy owners here. Ballard is coming back from the knee injury that cost him the entire 2012 season and is no lock for the final roster. Some expected Ballard to step right into the role vacated by Aaron Hernandez. That's simply not the case. The Patriots TE situation is very much unclear right now.

Patriots | Trio lands on PUP    Tue Jul 23, 12:37 AM

The New England Patriots placed TE Jake Ballard (knee), WR Julian Edelman (foot) and OG Nick McDonald (shoulder) on the Physically-Unable-to-Perform (PUP) list Monday, July 22.

Footballguys view: Ballard could be in line for a big role without Aaron Hernandez. His role could be even bigger if Rob Gronkowski (back, forearm) is not ready for the start of the regular season. Edelman could be a starter this season as he has experience in the offense and has previously earned the trust of QB Tom Brady.

Patriots | Jake Ballard ready to compete    Fri Jun 28, 10:30 PM

New England Patriots TE Jake Ballard (knee) is making his way back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, and he reportedly looking 'rigid' during organized team activities (OTAs) and minicamp.

Footballguys view: The team could lean heavily on Ballard to start the regular season if Rob Gronkowski starts the year on the PUP list. They'll be cautious with Ballard until he's fully healthy.

Patriots | Jake Ballard almost 100 percent    Fri Jun 21, 10:05 AM

New England Patriots TE Jake Ballard (knee) is almost 100 percent.

Footballguys view: Obviously Ballard has become a good deep sleeper at tight end with all of the turmoil at the position for the Patriots. Don't assume that the offense will remain tight end-centric in the passing game if Hernandez and/or Gronkowski miss significant time. Bill Belichick will alter the offense to fit the strengths of his personnel. He is not wedded to one system or approach.

Patriots | Optimism surrounding Rob Gronkowski    Tue Jun 18, 06:45 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (back, forearm), who underwent surgery to fix a spinal issue in his back Tuesday, June 18, has hopes of returning to action late in August, during the preseason. However, Gronkowski isn't a lock to be ready for Week 1 of the regular season. He's likely to begin training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list but will be eligible to come off at any point before Week 1.

Footballguys view: If no other negative news comes out about Gronkowski's condition, this is as low as his ADP and dynasty value will get for a long time. This first piece of somewhat positive news on his back surgery recovery schedule should move his ADP up, or at least stop the slide it has been on since the offseason started.

Patriots | TE Sudfeld appreciates his opportunity    Sun Jun 9, 07:55 PM

New England Patriots undrafted rookie TE Zach Sudfeld (Nevada) appreciates the opportunity he's been given in minicamp. With Rob Gronkowski ailing and Jake Ballard coming off a torn ACL, Sudfeld seems like a good bet to crack the Patriots' 53-man roster according to the Boston Globe.

Footballguys view: Our very own Cecil Lammey came away impressed by Sudfeld when he watched him during the week of practice for the Shrine Game earlier this year. Sudfeld is known as a quality blocker and an underrated receiver. He fell to the ranks of the undrafted because of durability concerns. With all the injuries to the TEs in New England fantasy owners in deep leagues need Sudfeld's name on their waiver wire speed dial.

Patriots | Jake Ballard not fully practicing    Fri May 31, 11:37 AM

New England Patriots TE Jake Ballard (knee) has not fully participated during the two organized team activities that the media has watched this offseason but has shown good hands during offensive drills. He also has been running with a noticeable limp.

Footballguys view: Ballard had major knee surgery 16 months ago but says that he's feeling better. 'I'm doing my best I can to be 100 percent, and I'm doing as much as I can, as much as they're allowing me to do out here,' Ballard said.   Patriots | Jake Ballard looking healthy    Wed May 29, 05:01 PM

New England Patriots TE Jake Ballard (knee) has looked sharp during organized team activities and hasn't been limited after having major knee surgery around 16 months ago. Ballard has shown nice hands and will be a nice blocking asset for the team this year. 'I'm doing my best I can to be 100 percent, and I'm doing as much as I can, as much as they're allowing me to do out here,' Ballard said. 'When I'm out here I feel like I'm putting in good work and getting better.'

Footballguys view: Ballard may be in for a bigger role than some people think. He missed all of 2012 due to this knee injury but is good to go this season. Ballard may be called upon if Rob Gronkowski (forearm, back) or Aaron Hernandez (shoulder) fail to stay healthy this year. Keep Ballard's name on your waiver wire speed dial.

Patriots | Will be cautious with Jake Ballard    Sun Apr 14, 02:14 PM

The New England Patriots will be cautious with TE Jake Ballard (knee) during offseason workouts because he is coming back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Footballguys view: The team will really need Ballard if Rob Gronkowski misses any playing time this year due to injury. Ballard should be ready for the start of the regular season and some believe he could be a full participant in the workouts.

Patriots | Jake Ballard making progress    Sun Feb 17, 01:06 PM

New England Patriots TE Jake Ballard (knee) is doing well in his rehab from a torn anterior cruciate ligament and is expected to compete for a roster spot during training camp.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners need to remember Ballard's name as he could be a valuable asset in 2013. Both Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez have struggled with injuries during their pro careers. Ballard is a quality veteran who could fill in nicely if called upon.

Patriots | Logan Mankins practicing in pads    Tue Aug 14, 05:12 PM

New England Patriots OG Logan Mankins (knee) participated in practice in pads for the first time Tuesday, Aug. 14. However, FB Eric Kettani, CB Alfonzo Dennard, FB Spencer Larsen, OG Brian Waters, LB Tracy White, OT Markus Zusevics, OT Matt Kopa, OT Kyle Hix, OT Sebastian Vollmer, TE Aaron Hernandez, TE Visanthe Shiancoe, WR Brandon Lloyd, TE Daniel Fells, TE Rob Gronkowski, TE Jake Ballard and DLs Myron Pryor, Gerard Warren and Jonathan Fanene sat out. CB Malcolm Williams and S James Ihedigbo returned.

Footballguys view: The Patriots offensive line is the only concern in a year setting up to be their best on offense since 2007. Mankins return to practice is reassuring for anyone planning on taking Tom Brady in the first round.

Patriots | Jake Ballard not likely to help much    Sat Jun 23, 08:23 PM

New England Patriots TE Jake Ballard (knee) projects to spend part of 2012, if not all, recovering from a major knee injury.

Footballguys view: Ballard's addition was more focused on the future than it was on 2012. Ballard is pretty much a lock to begin the season on the PUP list. This would keep him out of the lineup for the first 6 weeks of the season. After week 6 the Patriots would have 3 weeks to decide whether or not to put Ballard on season ending Injured Reserve.

Giants | Thought Jake Ballard would clear waivers     Thu Jun 14, 12:35 PM

New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese felt the team was not going to lose TE Jake Ballard on waivers to the New England Patriots. 'Yes, we thought that he would clear,' Reese said. 'It's rare but it's not the first time something like that has happened. It's disappointing for us that we didn't get him back. He did a tremendous job for us and we hope he gets well soon and that he can finish his career, whether it's with New England or whatever team he ends up with. It was disappointing, but that does happen, every blue moon.'

Footballguys view: Very rarely does Reese lose on a transaction, but that clearly is the case here. Ballard will sit for the Patriots and get healthy with an eye on a bigger role in 2013. This transaction only makes the Giants/Patriots rivalry even more lively.

Patriots | Jake Ballard claimed off waivers    Tue Jun 12, 05:03 PM

The New England Patriots claimed TE Jake Ballard off waivers from the New York Giants Tuesday, June 12, according to Ballard's agent.

Footballguys view: The Patriots would seem to have the least need at tight end of any team in the league, but they lost two players at the position on waivers last year and use the position as much as any offense in the NFL. Ballard has zero fantasy value as a Patriot, but the move does open up long-term fantasy value for Giants fourth-round pick Adrien Robinson, who the team called the "Jason Pierre-Paul of tight ends".

Giants | Jake Ballard waived    Mon Jun 11, 04:03 PM

The New York Giants have waived TE Jake Ballard (knee) because of a failed physical.

Giants | Eli Manning wants to replace offensive weapons    Tue Apr 24, 01:37 PM

New York Giants QB Eli Manning is hoping the team drafts some more offensive firepower in this year's NFL Draft after they lost RB Brandon Jacobs and WR Mario Manningham to the San Francisco 49ers. 'When we go into the draft, that could be an area we try to attack,' Manning. 'Get a skill-position guy who can help us get carries, get catches, in some ways get that same production from the guys we lost last year.' Manning said Stanford TE Coby Fleener could be a target after the team lost both TEs Jake Ballard (knee) and Travis Beckum (knee) to knee injuries in the Super Bowl.
