Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier said the team does not expect DE Christian Ballard to return to the team this season. Ballard left training camp around two weeks ago because of personal reasons.

Minnesota Vikings DT Sharrif Floyd might be thrust into the starting role if DT Kevin Williams (knee) isn't ready to return. DT Christian Ballard is on the reserve/left squad list and DT Letroy Guion could go back to the three-technique position on the defensive line. DT Chase Baker hasn't played in an NFL game. The team is unlikely to rush Williams back.

While Minnesota Vikings DL Jared Allen is a defensive player of the year candidate, and Brian Robison and Kevin Williams held their own, the team struggled up front. DLs Everson Griffen, Letroy Guion, Remi Ayodele, Fred Evans and Christian Ballard all struggled in 2011. Ballard saw time at multiple spots, and might need to focus on one position. Ayodele and Evans figure to return, but they might have plenty of competition in training camp.

University of Iowa DL Christian Ballard measured 6-foot-4 1/2, 286 pounds at his Pro Day Monday, March 21, reports Gil Brandt, of NFL.com. He ran the 40-yard dash twice, both in 4.70 seconds. He also ran the short shuttle in 4.56 seconds and the three cone-drill in 7.23 seconds. He measured a 34-inch vertical jump, a 9-foot-7 broad jump and completed 16 repetitions on the 225-pound bench press.
