Eagles | Monitoring Patriots cuts at TE Wed Sep 2, 07:18 PM
Mike Reiss, of the Boston Globe, reports that the Philadelphia Eagles are keeping a close eye on the Patriots TE situation, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Footballguys view: The Patriots could release David Thomas, Alex Smith, or Ben Watson when they go down to their 53-man roster. Any of them would be a suitable #2 TE for the Eagles, who saw rookie fifth-round pick Cornelius Ingram go down with another ACL tear in training camp. |

Patriots | Baker emerging as team's top tight end Wed Sep 2, 04:22 AM
Karen Guregian, of The Boston Herald, reports New England Patriots TE Chris Baker has emerged as the team's top tight end. TE Benjamin Watson (undisclosed) recently returned from an undisclosed injury, and he mostly played on special teams during the team's most recent preseason game.
Footballguys view: Watson's roster spot is in jeopardy. He is easily one of the ten most talented athletes playing tight end in the NFL, but it has never really translated to consistent production and play on the field. |

Patriots | Several players do not attend practice Tuesday Tue Sep 1, 06:26 PM
Mike Reiss, of the Boston Globe, reports New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman (undisclosed), CB Terrence Wheatley (undisclosed), CB Shawn Springs (undisclosed), RB Laurence Maroney (undisclosed), OL Don Connolly (undisclosed), WR Wes Welker (undisclosed), TE David Thomas (undisclosed), TE Chris Baker (undisclosed), DL Myron Pryor (undisclosed) and LB Shawn Crable (undisclosed) were not present during practice Tuesday, Sept. 1.
Footballguys view: Welker has missed a lot of practice and two out of the three preseason games. We know nothing about his injury since he's a Patriot, but it is beginning to make us wonder if Welker will be 100% for the opener. |

Patriots | Tight end race still too close to call Tue Aug 25, 12:33 AM
The Associated Press reports New England Patriots TE Benjamin Watson, TE David Thomas, TE Alex Smith and TE Chris Baker are competing for what could be three slots on the final 53-man roster. There is a chance the team could keep all four on the roster because the Patriots don't have a true fullback on the roster. The Patriots' tight ends could play as lead blockers, as well as being part of two- and three-tight end formations on short-yardage plays.
Footballguys view: We think Baker will be the lead in the TEBC, and he could easily have 6-8 TDs if Tom Brady is successful in returning to the offense to its 2007 form. Baker is the best all-around player, and he has had the best training camp. He's worth a pick as one of the last backup fantasy TEs in deep leagues, and in TD heavy leagues. |

Patriots | Baker part of two-minute offense Fri Aug 14, 05:25 PM
Mike Reiss, of the Boston Globe, reports that TE Chris Baker's presence in the two-minute offense was a surprise since he does not run as well as Ben Watson. Reiss writes that Baker is clearly the Patriots top tight end.
Footballguys view: Baker is not even being drafted right now, but his two touchdowns last night could be foreshadowing big things. Watson had six touchdown catches in Tom Brady's record-breaking year of 2007, Baker looks to be in line to have a similar total this year. |

Patriots | Rounding out the tight ends Thu Jul 16, 11:35 AM
Mike Reiss, of The Boston Globe, reports New England Patriots TEs Chris Baker and Alex Smith are locks to make the team in 2009.
Footballguys view: The Patriots signed Baker to a multi-year deal as a free agent during the offseason, and they traded a fifth-round draft pick in 2010 to acquire Smith from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Baker figures to work more as a blocker and run underneath routes, while Smith and TE David Thomas could move around at the position. Smith and Thomas, who are both in the final year of their contracts, could serve in a fullback-type role, too. Baker is under contract through 2013, but he is due a significant bonus after two years so it's essentially a deal through the 2010 season. TE Tyson DeVree, signed through 2010, is projected as the No. 5 tight end right now. |

Patriots | Distinct roles for TEs Watson, Smith, Baker, Thomas Thu Jul 16, 09:02 AM
Mike Reiss, of the Boston Globe, reports that TE Ben Watson is likely to continue filling the role of the primary tight end in three-wide receiver sets because he has the best speed of any TE on the roster. Free agency signing Chris Baker will be a blocker and run underneath routes, and trade acquisition Alex Smith and fourth-year pro David Thomas "project more as "move" players who could line up in the backfield and serve in a fullback-type role."
Footballguys view: Even though Watson had decent numbers during the Patriots great offensive season in 2007, and we expect the Pats to have a similar approach on offense this year, his role is diminishing and he won't be trustworthy in your lineup every week, although you could do worse if you're looking for a bye week/injury TE. |
