NFL | Champ Bailey retiring    Tue Oct 28, 01:50 PM

Free-agent CB Champ Bailey (Saints) has announced he is retiring, according to his agent.

Footballguys view: Countdown about five years and we'll see Bailey in the Hall of Fame. Is he the best corner to ever play the game? He could be. Bailey had elite speed and could shut down the best receivers, but (unlike Deion Sanders) he also liked to tackle.

NFL | Champ Bailey looking to play again    Wed Sep 24, 04:34 PM

Free-agent CB Champ Bailey (Saints) is healthy and is looking to sign with a team. He is willing to play cornerback, nickel back or safety for a team.

Footballguys view: Bailey is not the same player he used to be, but he could help a team looking for a veteran leader in a banged up secondary. It's telling that his phone has not been ringing off the hook since the Saints decided to let him go.

Lions | Nothing imminent with Champ Bailey    Thu Sep 4, 07:52 PM

Free-agent CB Champ Bailey (Saints) had a good workout with the Detroit Lions Thursday, Sept. 4, but no signing is imminent, according to a source with knowledge of the team's situation. Bailey is believed to be fully healthy.

Footballguys view: They may bring him in after Week 1 when a contract will no longer be guaranteed. The Lions could use some veteran help but they have felt they could hang with Darius Slay and Rashean Mathis.

Lions | Nothing imminent with Champ Bailey    Thu Sep 4, 12:57 PM

Free-agent CB Champ Bailey (Saints) is not close to a contract with the Detroit Lions even though he worked out for the team Thursday, Sept. 4.

Lions | Champ Bailey working out    Thu Sep 4, 12:24 PM

The Detroit Lions are scheduled to work out free-agent CB Champ Bailey (Saints) Thursday, Sept. 4.

Footballguys view: The Lions are kicking the tires here and could see whether adding a veteran - even at this late date - could help shore up a secondary which has a lot of question marks.

Jets | Champ Bailey unlikely    Mon Sep 1, 02:45 AM

Although the New York Jets are in need of cornerbacks, they are unlikely to pursue free-agent CB Champ Bailey, who was cut by the New Orleans Saints on Saturday, Aug. 30. The thinking is if Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan believes Bailey has lost a step, then Jets coach Rex Ryan would not take a chance on him.

Footballguys view: Bailey is not the same player he used to be. The Lisfranc injury he suffered in 2013 with the Broncos slowed him down all last season. Bailey could perhaps make a team if he switched to free safety in the twilight of his Hall of Fame career.

Saints | Champ Bailey released    Sat Aug 30, 03:47 PM

New Orleans Saints CB Champ Bailey has been released.

Footballguys view: Bailey just isn't the same player he used to be. Last year, Bailey struggled through a Lisfranc injury for the Broncos. That injury and age have slowed him down. He's a bright veteran who might make a team as a free safety.

Saints | Champ Bailey feels good    Sun Aug 24, 10:09 AM

New Orleans Saints CB Champ Bailey said he feels good after dealing with a minor foot injury, and feels like he has to prove what he can do. "Yeah, I do have to prove what I can do," Bailey said. "Even though I've played 15 years, it doesn't matter. Man, this is a production business. I think every guy going into training camp has to show what he can do. And, you know, I feel good. If they like what I do, then I'll play a lot on Sundays. Plain and simple."

Footballguys view: Bailey is not the same player he used to be. Age and injuries have finally caught up with him. A Lisfranc injury slowed him down last season with the Broncos, and his foot is still giving him trouble today.

Saints | Champ Bailey remains out    Mon Aug 4, 07:29 PM

New Orleans Saints CB Champ Bailey (undisclosed) remained out of practice Monday, Aug. 4.

Footballguys view: Bailey might be on the roster bubble for the Saints. If he can't get healthy, then the future Hall of Fame corner might get his walking papers. He struggled last year with the Broncos as he tried to play through a Lisfranc injury.

Saints | Champ Bailey's injury not considered serious    Sat Aug 2, 11:12 AM

Updating a previous report, New Orleans Saints CB Champ Bailey's (undisclosed) is not considered serious at this point, according to head coach Sean Payton. Payton would not disclose Bailey's injury.

Footballguys view: There has been speculation that Bailey may not make the Saints final roster. He battled through a Lisfranc injury in 2013, and Bailey struggled to look like his old self. If healthy, there's still enough left in the tank to contribute.

New Orleans Saints CB Champ Bailey is not guaranteed to make the final roster.

New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said the team will only use CB Champ Bailey at cornerback and will not use him at another position.

Saints | Champ Bailey to compete for starting job    Fri Apr 4, 04:09 PM

New Orleans Saints CB Champ Bailey will compete for a starting job this year opposite CB Keenan Lewis. Bailey will battle it out with CBs Corey White and Patrick Robinson. Bailey could also play a hybrid cornerback-safety role in nickel and dime packages.

Footballguys view: Bailey struggled in 2013 with the Broncos, but that was largely due to a Lisfranc injury he suffered in training camp. If healthy, Bailey should be a quality reserve corner at least.

Saints | Agree to terms with Champ Bailey    Fri Apr 4, 03:24 PM

The New Orleans Saints agreed to terms with CB Champ Bailey (Broncos) on a two-year deal Friday, April 4. Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Bailey gives the Saints veteran depth at the corner position. He's not yet ready to switch to free safety, and Bailey can still contribute as a nickel corner. Bailey is one of the best tacklers to ever play cornerback in the NFL. His 2013 season was disappointing as he tried to play through a Lisfranc injury he suffered in the preseason.

The San Francisco 49ers could show interest in free-agent CB Champ Bailey (Broncos) because of the off-field troubles for CB Chris Culliver.

Broncos | Champ Bailey released    Thu Mar 6, 01:57 PM

The Denver Broncos officially released CB Champ Bailey Thursday, March 6.

NFL | Champ Bailey could change positions    Wed Mar 5, 11:11 PM

Free-agent CB Champ Bailey (Broncos) might consider a switch to safety if he opts to continue his career elsewhere after being released by the Denver Broncos. 'I'm a corner at heart. If a situation made sense to play safety, then I would consider it,' Bailey said Wednesday, March 5.

Footballguys view: Bailey is not the same player he used to be. However, he spent most of the 2013 season dealing with a Lisfranc injury. He's better than what he showed on the field this season. Moving him to safety makes a lot of sense.

Broncos | Champ Bailey to be released    Wed Mar 5, 11:09 PM

The Denver Broncos informed CB Champ Bailey Wednesday, March 5, that he will be released, according to a league source. Bailey was set to earn $9 million this season with a cap hit of $10 million.

Footballguys view: There was zero guaranteed money left in Bailey's contract. That means the Broncos immediately get a $10 million bump in salary cap space. Right now they have around $28 million to spend on free agents. Expect the Broncos to be more active in free agency than some think.

Broncos | Interest in Darrelle Revis    Sun Mar 2, 02:43 AM

The Denver Broncos may be interested in Tampa Bay Buccaneers CB Darrelle Revis. Revis would make $16 million next year, as opposed to Broncos CB Champ Bailey and his $10 million salary, but Revis is much younger than Bailey and is considered an upgrade at the position.

Footballguys view: The Broncos would make themselves a strong contender to get back to the Super Bowl if they added a corner like Revis. Their secondary is going to be hurting from the knee injury Chris Harris suffered in the playoffs. Plus, the team has to decide whether or not they want to bring back free-agent corner Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.

Broncos | Will sit down with Champ Bailey    Fri Feb 21, 07:28 PM

Denver Broncos general manager John Elway said the team will sit down with CB Champ Bailey to talk about his future with the team as well as a possible contract restructuring. Bailey is scheduled to make $10 million next season.

Footballguys view: Bailey has zero guaranteed money owed to him in 2014. That means he's a candidate for release or restructure.

Broncos | Champ Bailey might need to restructure    Mon Feb 3, 11:43 PM

Denver Broncos CB Champ Bailey is set to make $10 million in 2014, and he would count $10 million against the salary cap. Bailey and his agent are expected to meet with team president John Elway soon to discuss their options. The team likely cannot afford Bailey at that price, but he might be willing to negotiate in order to remain.

Footballguys view: Bailey has a $10 million cap number, and zero guaranteed money in 2014. That makes him a prime candidate for restructuring or release. If Denver keeps him around, they could move him to free safety. Bailey is a valuable veteran, but clearly not the same player he used to be.

Broncos | Champ Bailey not talking about future    Sun Jan 26, 08:06 PM

Denver Broncos CB Champ Bailey said he is focusing on Super Bowl XLVIII and will talking about his playing future after the game. Bailey said he is not thinking about retirement at this time.

Footballguys view: We think Bailey calls it a career if the Broncos win the Super Bowl. He's not the same player he used to be, and some think he's going to play safety in 2014 if he does stick around. Bailey is due $10 million next year with $0 in guaranteed money. This means he'll be cut, or at least have his contract restructured, before the start of the new league year.

Broncos | Champ Bailey to see increased playing time    Sat Jan 18, 02:56 PM

He only played on 29 of 52 snaps during last week's victory against the San Diego Chargers. '(The pitch count) doesn't exist this week,' Bailey told Lindsay Jones of USA Today. 'Whatever it takes.'

Footballguys view: Bailey is likely a first-ballot Hall of Fame player, but he's never played in a Super Bowl. He's hoping to help put the Broncos in the Super Bowl by beating the Patriots on Sunday.

Broncos | Champ Bailey could be released    Sun Dec 29, 12:57 PM

The Denver Broncos could consider releasing CB Champ Bailey before they are scheduled to pay him a $1 million roster bonus. Bailey is scheduled to make $9 million in 2014.

Footballguys view: Bailey's level of play had been sliding, and he barely got on the field this year. He's clearly not worth nine million dollars, no matter how much history he has with the Broncos.

Broncos | Champ Bailey had Lisfranc sprain    Fri Dec 20, 09:13 PM

Denver Broncos CB Champ Bailey (foot) suffered a Lisfranc foot sprain in his left foot during the preseason, which has kept him off the field for the majority of this season. However, he's planning on returning for the final two regular season games, although he'll likely have his snaps limited to keep him fresh.

Footballguys view: This is what most expected, but now we have confirmation. Lisfranc injuries just need time to heal. Bailey has tried to come back twice this season, and both times he hasn't looked right. He's feeling better now, and the Broncos are hoping he's available for their Super Bowl run.
