NFL | Matt Asiata inks deal with AAF    Fri Feb 8, 09:57 PM

Free-agent RB Matt Asiata (Lions) has signed with the Salt Lake Stallions of the Alliance of American Football.

Footballguys view: Asiata was undrafted out of BYU back in 2011 and had a few stops in the NFL. His most recent spot, the Lions, didn't last long and he was out of the NFL in 2018. Asiata is a power back who we'll monitor in this new league.

Lions | Matt Asiata released    Fri Sep 1, 04:36 PM

Detroit Lions RB Matt Asiata was released Friday, Sept. 1.

Footballguys view: Zach Zenner and Dwayne Washington have one less competitor for big back goal line carries.

Lions | Matt Asiata on borderline    Thu Jun 29, 03:33 AM

Detroit Lions RB Matt Asiata may be on the borderline if the Lions decide to keep five running backs, but if the Lions carry four backs then Asiata may be on the sideline.

Footballguys view: Asiata is a limited back who is solid in close quarters and can catch the ball but isn't an every down back by any stretch. If the Lions are looking to move away from a fullback on carries, everything Asiata can do is something another back can do, and better. We get the feeling Asiata is a long shot to make the final roster.

Lions | Detroit adding Matt Asiata    Fri May 26, 08:13 PM

Free-agent RB Matt Asiata (Vikings) agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions Friday, May 26, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Asiata joins a Lions backfield to give them another power option behind Zach Zenner. Ameer Abdullah is likely the lead back, but he's not built to be a grinder in the NFL. That's where Zenner comes in...and oh yeah, Theo Riddick will still be a fine pass-catching option for the Lions in 2017. Asiata is no lock for the final roster.

Lions | Matt Asiata not signed by Lions    Mon May 15, 05:30 PM

Free-agent RB Matt Asiata (Vikings) was not given an offer following his participation in the Detroit Lions' rookie minicamp last week.

Footballguys view: Asiata is a TD hog, but if he can't stick with a team like the Lions then it will be tough for him to land elsewhere. Lions head coach Jim Caldwell insists they're happy with the current backs in place.

Vikings | Door open for Matt Asiata return    Sat Mar 11, 01:31 PM

Free-agent RB Matt Asiata (Vikings) is looking at other teams and waiting for some of the top free-agent running backs to sign, but he has not ruled out a return to the Minnesota Vikings.

Footballguys view: We're surprised Buffalo hasn't wanted another fullback after signing two already this offseason...(we're being sarcastic of course). Asiata has not found a ton of interest for his services out there, so returning to the Vikings might be his best bet.

Vikings | Matt Asiata to test market    Sat Mar 4, 03:07 PM

Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent RB Matt Asiata plans to test the free-agent market and there is a decent chance that he does not re-sign with the Vikings, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Good luck with that. Asiata is entering his age-30 season and the RB class in the 2017 draft is quite deep. Asiata managed just 3.32 YPC on his 121 carries in 2016, finishing with 402 yards. He also added 32 catches for 263 yards.

Vikings | Matt Asiata will be free agent    Sat Jan 14, 04:38 PM

Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

Footballguys view: The Vikings could always bring back Asiata for a good price. The draft is chock full of very good running backs, so the market should be cool for Asiata's services.

Vikings | Matt Asiata takes part in practice    Thu Dec 15, 03:06 PM

Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata (ankle) fully participated in practice Thursday, Dec. 15.

Footballguys view: The Colts are a shaky run defense, but the Vikings offensive line isn't very much help blocking for run plays. Asiata and Jerick McKinnon will split carries and likely both put up about the same numbers, somewhere in the RB3 neighborhood.

Vikings | Matt Asiata takes part in practice    Thu Nov 17, 03:06 PM

Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata (shoulder) fully participated in practice Thursday, Nov. 17.

Footballguys view: The Vikings aren't running the ball well, but Asiata could always have his fantasy value boosted by short-yardage TD runs. Against the Cardinals we have him as a RB4/flex play.

Vikings | Matt Asiata full go    Wed Nov 16, 06:05 PM

Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata (shoulder) was a full participant in practice Wednesday, Nov. 16.

Footballguys view: It's going to be tough sledding on the ground for the Vikings this week. The Cardinals have the 12th-best rush defense as they only allow an average of 100 rushing yards per game. That makes Asiata a RB3 for fantasy owners.

Vikings | Matt Asiata struggles    Sun Oct 23, 04:54 PM

Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata had 55 yards rushing in a 21-10 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, Oct. 23.

Footballguys view: Asiata seemed to pull even, if not ahead of Jerick McKinnon in this performance. He also caught six passes for 25 yards. McKinnon also got a little banged up to help Asiata's cause. He was also stuffed on a fourth and goal or an even better fantasy day was there despite the lackluster offensive day. Next week against Chicago should be a better week for the Vikings offensively.

Vikings | Matt Asiata finds the end zone    Sun Oct 9, 07:03 PM

Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata carried 14 times for 55 yards and a touchdown in the Week 5 game against the Houston Texans. He also hauled in three receptions for 46 yards.

Footballguys view: Asiata ran stronger as the game went on and got the "finisher" carries and a goal line carry to make for a very good fantasy day. He might be the better running back pick in the Vikings backfield when the team is heavily favored, and he's worth owning in all formats, even heading into the team's bye.

Vikings | Matt Asiata has quiet Week 3    Sun Sep 25, 04:17 PM

Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata rushed for 15 yards on six carries against the Carolina Panthers in Week 3. He also caught one pass for four yards.

Footballguys view: Asiata was announced as the starter, but he couldn't find room to run behind the ineffective Vikings line, especially after they lost Alex Boone. Jerick McKinnon outplayed Asiata and should get the start against the stout Giants run defense next week.

Vikings | Matt Asiata to start Week 3    Sun Sep 25, 12:13 PM

Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata will be the starting running back for the Vikings in Week 3.

Footballguys view: Jerick McKinnon was slated to be the starter earlier this week, but the Vikings are going with the more rugged three-down back to start. Both will get a lot of work and we expect McKinnon to do more and earn more work because the VIkings offensive line is not opening the holes that the north-south Asiata needs for success.

Vikings | Jerick McKinnon will start    Wed Sep 21, 02:09 PM

Minnesota Vikings RB Jerick McKinnon will be the starting running back with RB Adrian Peterson (knee) sidelined. He likely will play at least 60 percent of the snaps.

Footballguys view: We have a bit of clarity here, but know that McKinnon is going to lose out on some high-value touches if/when the team gets near pay dirt. RB Matt Asiata will also receive playing time and likely will handle the goal line carries.

Vikings | Minnesota will split work for backs     Mon Sep 19, 04:22 PM

Minnesota Vikings RBs Jerick McKinnon and Matt Asiata could see a 65/35 split between carries if RB Adrian Peterson (knee) misses any time, according to Matt Vensel of the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Footballguys view: We could see McKinnon work as the team's change-of-pace back, and Asiata could be featured on early-down and goal-line situations. Fantasy owners need to monitor Peterson's progress. Neither McKinnon or Asiata should be considered more than RB3 level because of this split and uncertain nature of this situation.

Vikings | Matt Asiata not close to deal    Mon Mar 7, 05:38 PM

Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent RB Matt Asiata is not close to an agreement with the Vikings. Asiata has received interest from several teams.

Footballguys view: It's going to be interesting to see what kind of market Asiata has. The RB/FB 'tweener may move on in free agency. Jerick McKinnon is already the primary backup to Adrian Peterson, and Asiata may want a larger role.

Vikings | Matt Asiata to re-sign with Vikings?    Wed Mar 2, 08:00 PM

Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent RB Matt Asiata is wanted back by the Vikings.

Footballguys view: Asiata is a solid short yardage back who can actually catch the ball well. He was an effective part of a one-two punch with Jerick McKinnon in 2014 with Adrian Peterson out and the Vikings would be smart to keep him around.

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson (finger) was limited in practice Wednesday, Oct. 21. Peterson left RB Matt Asiata to the running back duties for the final few plays in Week 6 after hurting his finger.

Vikings | Matt Asiata out in goal-line situations?    Mon Jul 27, 10:37 PM

Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata was a fantastic contributor in goal-line situations, but head coach Mike Zimmer indicated Monday, July 27, that RB Adrian Peterson will be leaned upon in the situations this season. 'Obviously, we're going to have to spell (Peterson) at times like you do a lot of guys. But we get down on the goal line, and we're probably not pulling him out, you know?,' Zimmer said.

Footballguys view: Asiata is not overly talented, but he has fantasy relevance because of his nose for the end zone. It sounds like he's going to be sitting on the bench when the Vikings get close to pay dirt this season.

Vikings | Matt Asiata limited again    Thu Dec 18, 06:15 PM

Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata (foot) was limited for a second consecutive day Thursday, Dec. 18.

Vikings | Limited practice for Matt Asiata    Wed Dec 17, 05:05 PM

Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata (foot) was limited in practice Wednesday, Dec. 17.

Footballguys view: Asiata makes for an interesting RB2 with upside this week. The Vikings play the Dolphins in Week 16, and Miami has been getting gashed on the ground. Asiata is a tough inside runner, and he's surprisingly used more as a receiver than some think.

Vikings | Ben Tate, Joe Banyard may see more time    Mon Dec 8, 05:16 PM

Minnesota Vikings RBs Ben Tate and Joe Banyard could receive more carries, because head coach Mike Zimmer thought RB Matt Asiata received too many carries in Week 14. Asiata received 19 of the 23 carries during the game.

Footballguys view: Asiata is an average talent--he's basically a fullback who runs hard and can catch a few passes out of the backfield. Tate was added earlier this year after the Browns released him. Banyard was a star RB at UTEP, but injuries slowed down his college career. The most talented back is arguably Banyard, but this looks like an ugly 3-headed RBBC that fantasy owners should avoid.
