Carolina Panthers RB Cameron Artis-Payne, QB Taylor Heinicke, CB Lorenzo Doss, WR Aldrick Robinson and LS Andrew DePaola were released Friday, Aug. 30. LB Brandon Bell, OG Tyler Catalina, C Parker Collins, CB Corn Elder, DT Woodrow Hamilton, OG Taylor Hearn, TE Cole Hunt, WR Damion Jeanpiere Jr., WR Andre Levrone, WR Jaydon Mickens, CB Ryan Pulley, WR Rashad Ross, TE Jason Vander Laan, LB Antwoine Williams and C John Yarbrough were waived. OG Kofi Amichia (undisclosed) and S Damian Parms (undisclosed) were also waived with an injury designation. OG Kitt O'Brien (undisclosed) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list.

Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey might see a little more help in the backfield, as head coach Ron Rivera searches for a secondary runner. '(McCaffrey) him touching the ball was no concern,' Rivera said. 'It was just the extra plays. So we have to look at that and find a way to take that load from him.'
| Footballguys view: McCaffrey should touch the ball as much as possible, but a breather from time-to-time would be nice. The team re-signed RBs Cameron Artis-Payne and Elijah Hood, they drafted RB Jordan Scarlett, signed Elijah Holyfield as an undrafted free agent and have RB Reggie Bonnafon in the mix as well. We'll watch this backup running back situation shake out in training camp. |

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton completed 14-of-34 passes for 180 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions in the Week 17 game against the Atlanta Falcons. He also rushed 11 times for a game-high 59 yards. RB Cameron Artis-Payne ran five times for 16 yards, while RB Christian McCaffrey chipped in with six runs, 14 yards and five catches for 40 yards. WR Devin Funchess ended up with two receptions, 48 yards and a score, while TE Greg Olsen was limited to one catch and 10 yards.

Carolina Panthers RB Cameron Artis-Payne was arrested Sunday, April 24, for speeding and reckless driving. He was driving 102 miles per hour in a 65 miles-per-hour zone. Neither alcohol nor drugs were involved, however. Artis-Payne was arrested on an unsecured $5,000 bond and only spent about 30 minutes in jail.

Head coach Ron Rivera said he's comfortable letting Stewart rest the final two weeks of the regular season so that he's ready for the playoffs, and Rivera is comfortable with using RB Cameron Artis-Payne. Stewart is not practicing but is out of his protective boot.

Carolina Panthers RB Cameron Artis-Payne is expected to get his share of opportunities in the Week 15 game against the New York Giants with RB Jonathan Stewart (foot) sidelined. 'This is a big opportunity for Cameron,' head coach Ron Rivera said Wednesday, Dec. 16. 'He's going to get some opportunities for sure. I'm excited about it. It's one of those things where we said when the time's right and Jonathan needs a break (Artis-Payne will get an opportunity), but Jonathan just kept rolling and rolling.'
