Carolina Panthers QB Derek Anderson signed a two-year extension Wednesday, Sept. 2.

Footballguys view: Anderson gets a reward here to stay with the Panthers as their backup behind Cam Newton. He's a good reserve quarterback with a rocket arm and plenty of starting experience.

Carolina Panthers LB A.J. Klein (ankle) fully practiced Friday, Jan. 2, and is questionable for the team's wild-card playoff. QB Derek Anderson (illness) and OG Fernando Velasco (non-injury) both fully practiced and are probable. S Thomas DeCoud (hamstring) did not practice and is doubtful.

Panthers | Cam Newton on track to start?    Thu Dec 18, 01:17 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) had an increased set of repetitions in practice Thursday, Dec. 18, and it looks like he's on track to play in Week 16 against the Cleveland Browns. Head coach Ron Rivera has yet to name Newton the starter, though, but he showed no signs of pain for the second straight day. Newton has been showing good velocity on his throws and hasn't had restrictions with his movement. QB Derek Anderson took second-team reps Thursday.

Footballguys view: We're still concerned about Newton for this weekend, and have him as a middle-of-the-road QB2. The injury, the lack of weapons and even the Cleveland defense give us some concern--added together Newton won't be his usual QB1 self.

Panthers | Cam Newton back at practice    Wed Dec 17, 01:12 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) returned to practice Wednesday, Dec. 17, and he worked with the second-team offense in the portion of practice open to the media. QB Derek Anderson worked with the first-team. Newton's status for Week 16 against the Cleveland Browns is uncertain right now, but he looked to be moving and throwing well Wednesday. He also ran and make some juke moves without difficulty.

Footballguys view: It looks like Newton could be back in action this week. Head coach Ron Rivera said he had hoped to make a decision on the starting QB early in the week.

Panthers | Derek Anderson leans on Greg Olsen    Tue Dec 16, 06:39 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Derek Anderson had 15 passes of 10 or more yards in Week 15 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and six of Anderson's passes of 10 or more yards went to TE Greg Olsen, who had 10 catches for 110 yards in the game. Anderson tends to lean more on Olsen as he holds the ball longer in the pocket and goes through his progressions. Olsen had eight catches for 83 yards in Week 1 when Anderson started.

Footballguys view: Hey, we give it up to Anderson for his performances while Cam Newton has been out. When Anderson starts, he forces the ball to both Olsen and Kelvin Benjamin...and that's not a bad thing.

Panthers | Derek Anderson to start in Week 15    Wed Dec 10, 01:59 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Derek Anderson will get the start in the team's Week 15 game, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Newton's car wreck may knock him out for the rest of the season. Anderson has a rocket arm, but he does struggle with accuracy sometimes. We're expecting the game plan to include a lot of handing off. When Anderson does throw, expect him to lock onto TE Greg Olsen and WR Kelvin Benjamin.

Panthers | Cam Newton to miss practice    Wed Dec 10, 01:19 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) will not be at the team's facilities Wednesday, Dec. 10, after being discharged from the hospital. It is unknown how long it will be until he's ready to return to action. 'That will be determined really on a day-to-day basis and we'll see how fast the soreness goes away,' team spokesman Charlie Dayton said. 'He'll start the recuperation process today.' QB Derek Anderson was taking first-team repetitions in practice Wednesday.

Panthers | Cam Newton may miss several weeks    Sun Sep 7, 12:52 PM

The Carolina Panthers fear that QB Cam Newton (ribs) could miss three to four weeks because of if he takes a hit on his injured ribs. Newton can change the team's mind if he can show he can protect his ribs while playing. At this point, the team plans to start QB Derek Anderson Week 1.

Footballguys view: Newton shouldn't be in your lineup. Even if he plays, his role in the running game will clearly be limited.

Panthers | Cam Newton hopes to play    Thu Sep 4, 02:57 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) said he expects to play Week 1 but will allow the coaches and trainers to determine his availability. Newton was able to do some throwing during practice Thursday, Sept. 4, and said it does not hurt when he throws.

Footballguys view: The ribs have us concerned because even if he plays, he could aggravate them and leave the game. With a questionable passing offense and the rib issue, against what could be a tough defense, we are seeing him as a high-end QB2.

Panthers | Cam Newton expects to play    Thu Aug 28, 12:47 AM

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) said Wednesday, Aug. 27, that he will be ready for the regular season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers despite fracturing his ribs last week. 'There's no doubt in my mind,' Newton said.

Footballguys view: The ribs will be a long term concern as they are the sort of thing which can linger and cause issues down the road. However, we're happy to see that he will be ready to go Week 1. We have him as a borderline QB1 because of the issues at wide receiver, but his ability to run with the ball and overall skills make him a guy who will be able to overcome his surroundings and put fantasy points on the board.

Panthers | Cam Newton inactive    Fri Aug 8, 07:46 PM

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) was inactive for the preseason opener against the Buffalo Bills Friday, Aug. 8, as expected. QB Derek Anderson started in Newton's absence.

Footballguys view: This is the best move for the Panthers. Newton is still nursing his ankle injury, and there's no need to risk further injury by playing in the first preseason game.

Panthers | Cam Newton will work with wide receivers    Thu Jul 10, 02:22 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton will work with his wide receivers before training camp gets underway to try to get on the same page after missing time due to an ankle issue. 'It's been more difficult because Cam's coming off an ankle injury and he had to get surgery, so we couldn't throw with him as much as we would like,' Panthers receiver Tiquan Underwood said.

Footballguys view: The more he can get together with these guys the better. He was working with rookie Kelvin Benjamin already, so bringing in the other guys is even better. Newton is an easy QB1 for any format, though the lack of receivers makes it tough to see him as challenging the likes of Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Andrew Luck or Peyton Manning.

Panthers | Derek Anderson re-signs    Thu Mar 13, 07:53 PM

Panthers | Twenty-one players will become unrestricted free agents    Tue Jan 14, 02:11 AM

The Carolina Panthers have 21 players who will become unrestricted free agents when the free-agency period begins in March. Players include WRs Domenik Hixon, Brandon LaFell and Ted Ginn Jr., QBs Derek Anderson and Jimmy Clausen, TE Ben Hartsock, OL Jordan Gross, OL Geoff Hangartner, OL Travelle Wharton, OL Garry Williams, OL Bruce Campbell, DE Greg Hardy, DT Colin Cole, LBs Jordan Senn, Jason Williams and Dan Connor, S Quintin Mikell, S Michael Mitchell, CBs Captain Munnerlyn and Drayton Florence, and K Graham Gano.

Footballguys view: The Panthers are going to have to invest in their wide receiver corps one way or the other this offseason. The offensive line and secondary are also areas that could have lots of turnover before next season.

Panthers | Could bring in David Garrard    Sat Mar 9, 08:32 PM

Browns | Coach could show interest in Derek Anderson    Sun Mar 3, 01:47 PM

Cleveland Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski could try to talk Carolina Panthers impending free-agent QB Derek Anderson into signing with the Browns to compete for the starting job but it could be difficult because of Anderson's history with Cleveland.

Footballguys view: Anderson would fit nicely in the Norv Turner system. However, they have a somewhat younger version of Anderson in last year's first-round pick Brandon Weeden.

Panthers | May be interested in having Derek Anderson back    Sun Mar 3, 01:44 PM

The Carolina Panthers may be interested in re-signing impending free-agent QB Derek Anderson because he performed well when QB Cam Newton missed some time this season.

Panthers | To reunite with Matt Moore?    Sun Feb 10, 09:54 PM

The Carolina Panthers might look to free-agent QB Matt Moore (Dolphins) for their backup job behind QB Cam Newton in 2013. Moore is reportedly well liked in Charlotte after previously playing three years for the Panthers. Impending free-agent QB Derek Anderson (Panthers) is not expected back, hinting he might reunite with Cleveland Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski.

Footballguys view: We could see Moore added to the Panthers roster but he may look for an opportunity to compete for a starting job in free agency. Going back to Carolina would mean he's locked in behind Cam Newton.

Browns | Derek Anderson interested?    Mon Jan 14, 10:01 AM

Carolina Panthers impending free-agent QB Derek Anderson said on his Facebook page he is interested in returning to the Cleveland Browns. 'Looks like it is time to make a return to a familiar place for some unfinished business,' Anderson said. 'I'd be honored to return to Cleveland to play football if the fans would have me.'

Footballguys view: Anderson was QB for the Browns from 2005-2009. He's been a backup with the Panthers for the last two seasons and would return to Cleveland as a backup behind Brandon Weeden.

Panthers | Derek Anderson having a solid camp    Tue Aug 7, 05:30 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Derek Anderson is having a solid training camp, and he is still ahead of Jimmy Clausen on the depth chart.

Footballguys view: Anderson has the stronger arm and is more experienced at the pro level. Clausen is on the roster bubble and may not make the team.

Panthers | Derek Anderson re-signed    Wed Mar 14, 04:45 PM

The Carolina Panthers have re-signed free-agent QB Derek Anderson to a one-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Anderson knows OC Rod Chudzinski's offense from their days together in Cleveland. He'll serve as the backup behind Cam Newton, and his signing could signal the team could release QB Jimmy Clausen.

Panthers | Derek Anderson unlikely to return    Sun Feb 26, 02:08 PM

The Carolina Panthers are not expected to re-sign impending free-agent QB Derek Anderson this offseason because the team will be looking for a quarterback that has a similar skill set to QB Cam Newton.

Footballguys view: It's possible the team brings Anderson back for veteran depth if they can't find anyone via free agency. We think they could be interested in adding a guy like Dennis Dixon or Vince Young.

Panthers | Not naming No. 2 QB for Week 1    Fri Sep 9, 01:50 PM

Panthers | Jimmy Clausen No. 3 QB?     Fri Sep 2, 09:34 AM

Carolina Panthers QB Jimmy Clausen appears to have been surpassed on the depth chart by QB Derek Anderson. Anderson is likely the team's No. 2 quarterback at this point behind QB Cam Newton.

Footballguys view: Clausen flopped in his rookie year, but if John Beck succeeds in Washington this year, let it be a reminder that most QBs need a few years in the league before we can completely judge them.

Panthers | Kealoha Pilares makes his bid    Sun Aug 14, 12:54 AM

Carolina Panthers WR Kealoha Pilares had a 35-yard touchdown reception for QB Derek Anderson in the second half of the preseason opener Saturday, Aug. 13, against the New York Giants. The speedster rookie from Hawaii also saw tim on punt returns.

Footballguys view: Nothing beyond the #1 wide receiver is set on the Panthers depth chart right now, so Pilares has a great opportunity to become their Davone Bess right away with a good camp.

Panthers | Derek Anderson agrees to terms    Tue Aug 2, 01:04 PM

The Carolina Panthers officially agreed to terms with free-agent QB Derek Anderson (Cardinals) Tuesday, Aug. 2. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Panthers | Close to deal with Derek Anderson    Mon Aug 1, 01:00 PM

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said the team is close to a contract agreement with free-agent QB Derek Anderson (Cardinals).

Footballguys view: Anderson looked bad as the Cardinals starter last year so it's puzzling why Carolina would want him this season. He's got a rocket arm but he can't throw it into the ocean standing on the beach. The Panthers have rookie Cam Newton as their QB of the future, plus second-year QB Jimmy Clausen is still there too.

Cardinals | Lowball offer led QB Warner to retire?    Sat Jul 9, 08:28 PM

Dave Razzanno, former 20+ year scout, reports via Twitter that Kurt Warner's people told him the veteran QB wanted to continue playing last year but a lowball offer from the Cardinals forced him into retirement.

Footballguys view: Cardinals fans should be upset if this is true. Kurt Warner led the team to a Super Bowl and some feel he could still play at a high level. The Cardinals suffered through a 5-11 record where they burned through guys like Derek Anderson, Max Hall, and John Skelton at the QB position. Arizona was the 31st ranked team in passing offense in 2010 and could have certainly used Warner under center.
