Bills | Anthony Allen signs    Tue Jan 14, 04:15 PM

The Buffalo Bills signed free-agent RB Anthony Allen (Ravens) to a reserve/futures contract Tuesday, Jan. 14.

Footballguys view: Allen was taken in the seventh round of the 2011 NFL draft by the Ravens. He's a versatile player who can be a quality reserve runner and decent receiver out of the backfield. Owners in super deep dynasty leagues need to monitor his progress.

Ravens | Anthony Allen favorite for No. 3 RB job    Sun Jun 23, 01:14 PM

Baltimore Ravens RB Anthony Allen will enter training camp as the leading candidate for the No. 3 running back job.

Footballguys view: The 2011 seventh-round pick (Georgia Tech) is a versatile runner with good ability in between the tackles. Allen's not as explosive as Bobby Rainey but could win the RB3 job ahead of him.

Ravens | Anthony Allen re-signs    Tue Apr 2, 09:32 PM

The Baltimore Ravens re-signed exclusive rights free-agent RB Anthony Allen Wednesday, April 3.

Ravens | Bernard Pierce hitting stride    Sat Dec 29, 09:50 PM

Baltimore Ravens RB Bernard Pierce has managed 443 rushing yards with a touchdown and average of 5.2 yards per carry this season. Only a handful of rookie RBs have been more productive than Pierce. 'He's patient and he knows how to read defenses. He's putting everything together and running where he's supposed to and how he's supposed to,' fellow RB Anthony Allen said. 'It's about growing and learning the game, and Bernard is doing that.'

Ravens | Bobby Rainey signed to practice squad    Tue Sep 11, 09:13 PM

The Baltimore Ravens re-signed free-agent RB Bobby Rainey (Ravens) to the team's practice squad Tuesday, Sept. 11. Coach John Harbaugh explained the thinking in cutting Rainey before Week 1. 'Bobby Rainey is a big part of our plans,' Harbaugh said. 'I texted Bobby before the game. He is, right so, upset about it. Bobby is a guy that I cherish. We just did it for special teams reasons, pure and simple. (RB Anthony Allen) has done a great job on special teams, and we made a strategic roster move we hope works for us.'

Ravens | Anthony Allen added to active roster    Mon Sep 10, 06:03 PM

The Baltimore Ravens have signed practice squad RB Anthony Allen to their active roster. In a corresponding move, the team waived RB Bobby Rainey.

Footballguys view: Interesting move here. Rainey beat out Allen for a roster spot after preseason but now is on the street. He's not much of a runner but did flash good skills in the open field as a receiver out of the backfield. Rainey could end up on a practice squad somewhere.

Ravens | Five added to practice squad    Sat Sep 1, 03:08 PM

The Baltimore Ravens have signed RB Anthony Allen, S Omar Brown, LB Josh Bynes, OL Jack Cornell and OG Antoine McClain to their practice squad.

Footballguys view: Allen was unable to beat out Bobby Rainey for a spot on the depth chart but gets a spot on the practice squad. We like his low center of gravity and balance running between the tackles.

Ravens | 15 players waived    Fri Aug 31, 10:52 PM

The Baltimore Ravens waived RB Anthony Allen, S Omar Brown, LB Josh Bynes, LB Nigel Carr, OL Jack Cornell, WR Dorian Graham, OL Cord Howard, NT Nicolas Jean-Baptiste, NT Ish Kitchen, OG Antoine McClain, DE Terrence Moore, QB Curtis Painter, WR Logan Payne, FS Chyl Quarles and LB Chavis Williams Friday, Aug. 31.

Footballguys view: Matt Waldman favorite Bobby Rainey beat out Allen for the #3 running back job. He could eventually overtake third-round pick Bernard Pierce to back up Ray Rice.

Ravens | Anthony Allen struggling with pass blocking    Sat Aug 18, 02:39 PM

Baltimore Ravens RB Anthony Allen struggled with his pass blocking for the second straight week Friday, Aug. 17, and allowed another sack this preseason.

Footballguys view: Bad news for Allen here. Backs need to protect the QB if they want to see the field. Allen is competing with Bernard Pierce and Damien Berry to be the primary backup behind Ray Rice.

Ravens | Could add RB to the roster    Wed Aug 8, 11:01 AM

Baltimore Ravens RBs Anthony Allen, Bernard Pierce and Damien Berry have not made nearly as much noise in training camp as RB Bobby Rainey, an undrafted free agent from Western Kentucky. However, Rainey is a clone of RB Ray Rice and the team might need a change-of-pace runner. As a result, the Ravens could add a free agent near the end of camp.

Footballguys view: We wouldn't call Rainey a clone of Ray Rice. He's a compact runner with good balance and a low center of gravity and he's got good open field speed like Rice. However, he struggles with vision and is not a quality inside/out runner. Too often on film (or at the Shrine Game) Rainey would try to bounce runs outside or waste time dancing in the backfield. He's a change of pace back at best in the pros, and the Ravens could be in the market for a more adequate backup.

Ravens | Battle for backup running back    Tue Aug 7, 05:53 PM

The battle for the No. 2 role behind Ray Rice in the Baltimore Ravens' backfield isn't clear right now. While RB Bernard Pierce (hamstring) appears to be the most suited for an every-down role if called upon, a hamstring injury has prevented him from being on the field much. RB Damien Berry bulked up and has had a solid camp while RB Anthony Allen hasn't shown much in moves to go along with his power-running style. Undrafted rookie RB Bobby Rainey has turned heads. The diminutive back has shown the ability to catch well out of the backfield and no longer appears to be a long shot to make the team's final roster.

Footballguys view: We like Pierce to win the job if he's healthy. Berry is more of a pure speed back and Allen doesn't have an impressive overall skill set. Pierce is a bruising back who can grind down an opposing defense. His elite balance makes him difficult to bring down and effective after contact.

Ravens | Anthony Allen likely to open camp as No. 2 RB    Sat Jul 21, 12:03 AM

Baltimore Ravens RB Anthony Allen is likely to open training camp July 26 as the primary backup to starting RB Ray Rice. Allen will be trying to hold off RBs Damien Berry, Bernard Pierce and Bobby Rainey.

Footballguys view: Allen may begin the season as the primary backup behind Ray Rice, but if you're looking for a handcuff look elsewhere. We think rookie Bernard Pierce is the true backup and should win the job in training camp. Pierce is a more naturally gifted runner than Allen, and has better speed in the open field.

Ravens | Bernard Pierce to compete for No. 2 job    Fri Jun 29, 10:14 PM

Baltimore Ravens RB Bernard Pierce is believed to be a solid fit for the offense, and a solid complement to RB Ray Rice. He will challenge for the primary backup job to Rice, competing with RBs Anthony Allen and Damien Berry for the spot in training camp.

Footballguys view: Pierce is a talented runner with natural patience and instincts for the position. He understands cutback angles and has elite balance which allows him to change direction with ease. Pierce is a strong between the tackles runner, but lacks the speed to be a homerun threat.

Ravens | Anthony Allen working with starters    Sat Jun 16, 12:55 AM

Baltimore Ravens RB Anthony Allen has been working with the first-string offense during the team's OTAs and most recent three-day minicamp. After spending time buried on the depth chart in the past, Allen is finding the extra work valuable. Allen said he has found it beneficial working with the first-string because the speed is much faster than working with the backups. He appears more tone than he did previously, and at 6-0 and 230 pounds, he may have the size to be the power back for the Baltimore offense. Allen feels he needs to round out his game somewhat, as he will need to do a little bit of everything in the Ravens' system.

Footballguys view: Allen is a solid all-around back who is competing with rookie Bernard Pierce to be the primary backup behind Ray Rice. Pierce has been nursing a hamstring injury which has opened the door for Allen to show what he can do.

Ravens | Could still add a veteran back    Sat Jun 16, 12:47 AM

The Baltimore Ravens say they are comfortable with RBs Anthony Allen, Bernard Pierce and Damien Berry as their backups to RB Ray Rice, but the team could still add a veteran back to the mix.

Footballguys view: The Ravens may evaluate the position closer and decide to add a veteran runner for training camp. Several RBs remain on the open market like former Bengals starter Cedric Benson.

Ravens | Anthony Allen confident he can get job done    Sat Mar 31, 10:42 PM

Baltimore Ravens RB Anthony Allen is in the mix to compete for the primary backup job behind RB Ray Rice following the retirement of RB Ricky Williams. Allen is confident he knows the system, protections, lines and passes, even though he barely played last season. '(Anthony) goes from third (running back to) potentially No. 1 if something happens,' head coach John Harbaugh said. 'Every backup player is an injury away, a play away from being the guy. We think a lot of him, we think a lot of (RB Damien Berry). We think they're going to have very good seasons, but we've got to look at some insurance, too. We've got to have more than two running backs on our roster, so we'll add some guys.'

Ravens | Confident with RBs on the roster     Sat Feb 25, 08:32 AM

Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said that he was surprised by retired RB Ricky Williams' original decision to consider retirement. And then he was surprised again that Williams didn't rethink the decision. However, he said he's confident the team can go into next season with RBs Anthony Allen and Damien Berry serving as backups.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners need to remember the names Anthony Allen and Damien Berry. Allen started his college career at Louisville but transferred to Georgia Tech and became a star. Berry was a speed back at the University of Miami and is a very explosive player who is a threat to score every time he touches the ball.

Ravens | Two could get chance to get No. 2 RB job    Wed Feb 15, 06:09 PM

Baltimore Ravens RBs Anthony Allen and Damien Berry could get the chance to win the No. 2 running back job during the offseason.

Footballguys view: Berry was a practice squad back in 2011, but he should be given a chance to pass Allen on the depth chart this offseason. The Ravens are likely to bring in at least one more back via free agency or the draft.
