On August 11th, Twelve members of the Footballguys staff completed a 20-round mock auction using the Footballguys Players Championship (FFPC) scoring format. Before we can look at the results of the draft, here are few of the details pertaining to the FFPC scoring and roster guidelines. After all, the details of your league are as important as the players on your team. For example in this scoring format, the tight end is awarded 1.5 points per reception and therefore has more value. FFPC also has the dual flex which allows two additonal flex positions from the RB, WR or TE. Knowing and acting on these important roster and scoring guidelines is vital in having a competitive and successful auction.

Questions
1. If you could have one mulligan and change a winning bid, what would it be?
I think Drew Brees was pretty strong value at $19, but he wasn't a priority for me. I wouldn't have taken him above $20. The $12-$15 I could've saved by rostering a QBBC would have kept me from locking up on Frank Gore or Darren McFadden. I thought both were great buys in the low $20 range. Grabbing one of them would have greatly improved my running back situation.
2. You spent a total of $57 on six wide receivers getting four WR1 or WR2 type players. Was that your strategy going in to find value at the wide receiver position?
Yes. I wanted to get one player from my top two tiers at a value then take shots from there. My elite tier options were nominated too early to have a great grasp on value but I was happy to end up with Vincent Jackson. Once I missed out on a handful of RB2 values I liked, I switched gears late in the draft and prepared to go to $10-$15 each on 2-3 additional WR2 / WR3 values.
3. You wound up spending 26% of your budget on five tight ends. Explain the reasoning behind this strategy.
It's a 1.5 PPR TE premium, dual flex league. It became evident very early that the middle running back tiers were going for more than the second tight end tiers were. That didn't make much sense to me, so I shifted gears to target tight ends as potential upside flex plays. I love Tyler Eifert this year and held back a couple extra dollars to make sure I rostered him as my TE3. The end game got me James Casey for very little and Heath Miller was a better $1 play than the backs and receivers left with my last skill position nomination.

Questions
1. You spent 89% of your budget on RBs and WRs. Was that by plan? Explain your thought process behind that strategy?
You don’t necessarily want to spend a lot of money out of the gate and many times, the players that are nominated in the early part of the auction are going to be high dollar players. Having said that, it is easy to miss out on an elite running back, let alone a second running back with a similar skill set. Before you know it, there are fewer attractive options available. It’s good to conserve your money, but you also want to win quality players. My strategy going in was to target one RB1 back and one elite WR fairly early and then fill in with value players, while spending $10-20 on a TE1. I settled on Steven Jackson and Dez Bryant as my two cornerstone players. My intent was not to win Brandon Marshall, but for $34 in a split second decision, I thought the deal was justified – especially after I just won Dez Bryant for $38. The only problem was that multiple people raised the bid at the same time and mine went in as $36. Nobody else raised the bid and Marshall was mine. This completely changed my strategy. I knew I had to spend less than I wanted for my TE1 and probably my WR3 and WR4. One very important piece of advice – don’t sacrifice your spending strategy simply because you think a player’s value is better than another player you won at a higher price.
2. What advice would you give to someone who is in a 12 team auction?
My advice would be to what I wanted to do – target an elite, level 1 RB and level 1 WR and then wait for the value to kick in. In auction leagues I’ve found that the best value is at quarterback and wide receiver. You can spend the same amount of budget on three or four low end WR2 or WR3 level players that you would for one elite wide receiver. The value at quarterback is even better. Colin Kaepernick, Robert Griffin, Matthew Stafford and Tony Romo all went for $10 or less, whereas Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and Peyton Manning went for $21, $19 and $18 respectively. In most cases, backup quarterbacks went for $2 or less. Have a budget for your core players. Perhaps something like this.
- RB1 - $35
- WR1 - $30
- TE1 - $12
- RB2 - $20
- WR2 - $12
- RB3 - $7
- WR3 - $7
- QB1 - $10
- All others – $6 or less
In the above budget spending strategy: QB1, RB1, RB2, RB3, WR1, WR2, WR3, TE1 = $133 spent. That leaves $67 for 12 reserve players or about $5-$6 per player. Given that some lower end reserves, plus kicker and defense will go for $1, you have some wiggle room to spend $7 or even $8 on a WR4 or RB4. Examples RBs and WRs who went for $7 or less include: Chris Ivory ($7), Ahmad Bradshaw ($6), Montee Ball ($5), Kenny Britt ($7), Steve Johnson ($7), DeAndre Hopkins ($7), T.Y. Hilton ($7). There is definitely value to be had later in the auction.
3. What player were you targeting that you missed out on?
After altering my strategy, I missed out on a few players I wanted, because they went a little higher than what I wanted to spend. I did not want to get myself into needing five plus players with a $2 budget per player. In evading that, I missed out on Kyle Rudolph and Martellus Bennett, who each went for $10. I settled on Fred Davis ($5), Zach Sudfeld ($3) and Robert Housler ($2) for the price of what my TE1 would’ve been. I also had interest in Jacquizz Rodgers, who went for $2 when my maximum spend on any player was $2. I settled for Mikel Leshoure for the same price, but I definitely wanted Rodgers as a handcuff to Steven Jackson.

Questions
1. You won 10 players with a winning bid of $1, while it's good to have a few minimum bid winners on your team, generally this means you are top heavy in one or more positions. Is this a strategy that you recommend?
I had spent a good portion on my budget early, on Marshawn Lynch, Trent Richardson and A.J. Green. I targeted Lynch and Richardson based on their respective offensive line strengths, even though they aren’t huge PPR producers. Because of those splurges, I had to sit out much of the “middle rounds” and frankly, I’m ok with that. By the time I got back in the game, everyone was broke and it was dollar time. Just my opinion, quality is the thing to seek, not quantity. I didn’t want to have a bunch of mediocre players, I wanted to have the equivalent of three first round picks in a normal draft.
2. What player did you miss out on that you were targeting?
Danny Amendola, who went for about 20 dollars. What a great value that will turn out to be. As most know, Danny Amendola went to the same Texas Tech program as Wes Welker and if he can stay healthy, can get 110+ receptions in that system, with Tom Brady throwing to him. Every day that goes by I am higher on Danny Amendola.
3. Nick Toon is growing in popularity lately. What are your expectations of him this year?
Normally, a guy fighting for the fourth wide receiver spot wouldn’t be such a hot fantasy sleeper. But with the way the Saints spread the field, and the way Drew Brees spreads the production, there’s really not a huge gap between the Saints’ numbers one and two targets and the number three or four targets. Toon has sure hands, height to be a red zone target and of course famous bloodlines. I don’t expect him to be a starter on this fantasy team but he could have value as a bye week flex play. He’s a much stronger pick in dynasty formats.

Questions
1. You easily spent the most of your budget (70%) on running backs, while staying relatively low on wide receiver and tight ends. Explain this strategy?
It was all based on my projections for this league and how the auction unfolded early. It may be a PPR league with premium TE scoring, but a team can start four RBs. I calculated my dollar value using the VBD method that Sigmund Bloom recommended and then tailored my distribution of assets on a curve where I gave more value to the first 5-6 rounds than Bloom used in his example.
The combination of my projections and my adjusted cap distribution curve yielded a budget where 21 of the top 30 players for this league were running backs. For my budget Peterson was worth $75; Doug Martin $68; Shane Vereen $33; and Le’Veon Bell $22. There was a greater spread of value for receivers and tight ends, but the concentration of players was really lumped together in the middle to late rounds.
My projections may be my downfall, but I believe in them so once I got Doug Martin – the first player up for bid – at a $24 discount compared to what I would have spent on him and then Peterson followed at $20 less than my budgeted price, it made sense for me to target four backs I could use. It then meant bargain shopping mid-round receivers and late-round tight ends that I value higher than the norm like Antonio Brown, Vincent Brown, Anquan Bolden, and T.Y. Hilton.
I’ve drafted against these owners enough in the past that I figured most of them would be tight in the beginning. Controlling the auction is the big thing. When the first cue was a tight opening that allowed me to get Martin at a discount I had a feeling it was time to be aggressive, which earned me Peterson a pick later. If the group adjusted to Peterson, I would have gone a different route with my execution of the draft, but they didn’t.
Controlling at auction is a great strategy, but so is being aggressive when you know what you want, how much you’re willing to pay to get it, and no one stands in your way. I recognized these dynamics in this auction and then had to the patience to wait out my peers. By the late rounds I had as much bankroll or more than anyone else and still got the two backs and four receivers I wanted.
2. What player was your most valuable winning bid for your team?
Sorry Jeff, but I don’t believe you can pinpoint one player as the most valuable winning bid. There are way too many dynamics at play. However, I will say the patience to wait after spending almost 50 percent of my budget on two players and getting players I valued was what made me happy with my draft (rankings for this league and my budgeted values in parenthesis):
- Shane Vereen (17th overall/$33)
- Le’Veon Bell (26th overall/$22)
- Antonio Brown (42nd overall/$11)
- Vincent Brown (44th overall/$9)
- T.Y. Hilton (85th overall/$2)
I got five of my top 100 overall (not including Boldin, Peterson, or Martin) players for a combined $64 – and four of them were in my top 50! Because I saved on my first two backs, I could spend more on some of my receivers than what was budgeted. This was what I was hoping to achieve once I landed the two stud runners.
3. Your strategy was to spend high on running backs. What other strategy would you entertain for a successful auction?
My strategy was to determine where the values could be had. My execution turned out to be spending on running backs because Doug Martin went absurdly low based on my projections. It turned out I was right. He went for less than Ray Rice, Trent Richardson, Arian Foster, C.J. Spiller, and was within $5 of Steven Jackson, Marshawn Lynch, Chris Johnson, and Matt Forte. It afforded me to spend the premium on Adrian Peterson, which meant my fourth back might be better than many of my competitor’s second back in a start-four RB league.
If wide receivers went at or below my budget I would have taken four stud receivers. It could also apply to tight ends if the values dictated it. But in this league I thought my peers vastly overvalued the two positions – especially tight ends.
They saw 1.5 PPR at the TE position and went bonkers. My projections may ultimately be the bonkers-like variable, but I didn’t see the value. Of collecting top tight ends when only 3-5 had value compared to having 4 runners you could use every week.
The most traditional strategy is to spend perhaps 20 percent of your budget early and then nothing until you have a 2-to-1 maximum bid advantage against your competition. It is a tried-and-true strategy.
I was tempted to win Dez Bryant who went to you (Jeff Haseley) for a dollar less than my budgeted cost and considering I had saved $44 with my first two picks, I have easily spent another $10 on Bryant to win him from you and then targeted a tight end like Gonzalez before waiting until the very end to take bargain players.

Questions
1. You spent 32% of your budget on tight ends, but you managed to acquire Jimmy Graham in the process. Would you recommend this strategy to others? Is Graham worth it at the expense of other positions?
Graham was definitely worth it. In a TE premium league, he should be the most valuable player. I wanted Daniels to be my flex. In fact, Daniels was my first nomination. I was to start with him and shoot for Graham or Gronkowski. I see the Houston tight end as one of the safest players in the second positional tier.
2. What one player were you targeting that you missed out on?
I see Maurice Jones-Drew, Pierre Thomas, and Lance Moore as undervalued in every draft or auction. I spent too much acquiring a strong set of running back starters and wished I had saved some for this trio.
3. What advice would you give to someone who is in a 12 team auction?
Wait on quarterback. I was the first to win a quarterback, and was ecstatic to win Peyton Manning for less than ten percent of my cap. But, later on in the auction, Robert Griffin III went for almost half the cost of Manning. I would have been better off waiting. One other thing to consider is that if you spend on an elite tight end, top quarterback, and pair of ball carriers, you will be scraping the bottom of the barrel at the receiver position. I would have been better off only getting one top back, instead of two, and spreading out my money over the RB2 and WR1 positions.

Questions
1. You won just two players with a minimum bid of $1. Four or less minimum bid winners is usually a good sign of a successful auction. Explain how you were able to follow this strategy?
I expected the opening of the auction to be fast and furious with soaring prices and that was exactly what occurred. I prefer to build balanced teams with plenty of quality upside on the bench. Having the additional capital compared to the other owners in the middle and end of the auction was a key component to acquiring my target players down the depth chart.
2. You selected just one quarterback and one tight end. What was your thinking behind this move?
I was open to the possibility of grabbing Graham or Gronkowski, but only for a price in the $20-25 range, which both were well past in the early going of the auction. Once the pair of stud tight ends was off the board, I was committed to going cheap at the position, but targeting a player I liked quite a bit. Jordan Cameron and Coby Fleener were priority players at the position. I finally landed Fleener near the end of the auction, a tight end I like to surprise as a top-10 option this season.
3. If you could make one change or take back one winning bid, what would it be?
I am not a fan of going for a quarterback early in a draft or paying a premium in an auction. I felt Aaron Rodgers was a good price when I bought him, but seeing Colin Kaepernick go for $10 and Matthew Stafford for $7 later made Rodgers look like a waste of $5-10. Those extra few dollars go a long way with a $200 budget, especially with a spread the wealth mentality for team-building. After purchasing Rodgers, I decided to go without a backup at the position to save a few dollars for other positions. With just a single starter and securing one of the best in the game, a backup would be needed just for Rodgers’ bye week and can be addressed during the season.

Questions
1. Your percentage of budget spent for each position is very close to the average of all team owners, which suggests a balanced team. Explain how you were able to maintain this strategy?
It started by resisting the temptation to spluge on running backs early, although I do wish I'd gotten in on Doug Martin because he ended up being a steal. I kind of slow played it in the beginning of the auction, nominating players I had very little interest in. Then once Julio Jones and Chris Johnson were nominated I went pretty hard. I had actually planned on winning A.J. Green too, which would have thrown my percentages off, but he ended up getting away from me. I didn't mind spending extra on Jones or Wes Welker because I knew I'd get value for my WR3 in Mike Williams.
2. What player was your most valuable winning bid for your team?
I would have to say it was Stevan Ridley., Ridley cost less than half of what an elite running back did, mostly because of his lack of involvement in the passing game. I still think he's going to get a ton of touches, and nearly all of the touches in the red zone. It doesn't take very many touchdowns to make up for his lack of receptions. If you look at my team in terms of draft picks, Ridley was my third most expensive player so he would be my third rounder. I'd love to land him in the third round of any draft.
3. What one player were you targeting that you missed out on?
Jason Witten is a player I love in the FFPC format, but I couldn't bring myself to spend $31 on him. I really thought when I passed that I could get Greg Olsen for half the price, but I ended up having to go to $20 on him, which was a little more than I wanted to spend. Witten could very easily catch 100 balls again in 2013 and with 1.5 ppr that's worth a ton. Witten actually outscored Gronkowski in this format in 2012.

Questions
1. This is a very balanced team with just two minimum bid winners and seven double-digit bid winners. Explain why this is a good strategy going into an auction?
With an auction draft you have all manner of options available to you. You can draft 3 players that would be first round draft picks, you can draft 10 4th round players if luck pans out or you can do a mixture of getting elite players and depth. With the required starting lineups, scoring system and competition for the elite players, I wanted to make sure I didn't pay over my value for any player if I could avoid it. That probably resulted in getting more depth, but lacking the marquee player that I needed to put my team in a better position. 12 Running backs went for $40 or more, Jimmy Graham went for $53 and 5 receivers went for more than $35. Getting any of these players would have made it difficult to get depth.
2. What player were you targeting that you missed out on?
Mainly the elite players, but in particular Ray Rice. His ADP has fallen to the middle of the 1st round, yet here he fetched the 3rd highest price for a Running Back. The price went $3 over my maximum for him. Matt Forte was another close call, he went for $42 when my top value was $40.
3. What are your expectations of the 49ers passing game this year, specifically Vernon Davis' outlook?
The 49ers have had a fairly dramatic overhaul at receiver this year with Randy Moss gone, while Mario Manningham and Michael Crabtree are injured. Anquan Boldin will be stable, but won't get anywhere near the numbers that Crabtree would've had. The number two receiver situation is a mess, with A.J. Jenkins more likely to get cut than contribute. Austin Collie was signed off the street and has a head start for that role. I don't think that experiment will end well. That leaves me and many others to deduce that Vernon Davis simply has to be more available as a receiver if the 49ers running game and Colin Kaepernicks' style of play is to dominate. Failure to get yardage in the passing game will kill everything else. Jim Harbaugh is a bright enough coach to use his best weapons, and the main one is Vernon Davis. With the scoring system here Davis will be incredible value in hindsight.

Questions
1. This is a very balanced team, following a similar budget path of the average team. What strategy changes did you make in this 12 team auction that you learned from the 10 team auction?
I was a little too aggressive in the 10-team auction and wound up having to fill out my roster with too many $1 type players. This time I decided to be very patient early and try to control the middle of the draft. At that point, the players shouldn’t be too expensive so you can build great depth and still have enough auction funds to be aggressive when values present themselves. I wound up having to spend more than I thought it would cost to land Forte and Jones-Drew but they gave me a base to work from. I think I wound up with 4 players who typically go in the 2nd round of PPR drafts so I think that would give my team an edge here.
2. You had the winning bid for both Robert Griffin and Tony Romo. Explain why you wanted two level 1 quarterbacks on your roster?
I generally would prefer to wait at quarterback but I thought RGIII was worth a $10 bid. I wouldn’t have spent any more on him and kind of regretted even bidding on him after I won him, especially when I saw the type of QB values that were found later on. After I won him, I realized that he’s obviously an injury risk given how his 2012 season ended so I felt like it was important to get another QB who I could count on. Romo was the last of the true QB1 options out there I think, and I thought the price of $7 was worth the production he can provide. Between these two, I'd expect this team could play the best matchups each week and get top-5 QB production for a reasonable price of $17.
3. What player was your most valuable winning bid for your team?
After spending more than I wanted to for Forte and MJD, I thought Ryan Mathews for $8 was a value that really helped make the draft a success. He provides a clear #3 RB and even though he’s been injury prone, the potential is there for him to be a top-10 back when healthy. I hoped to handcuff him to Woodhead later but the price was too much for me. Cecil Shorts for $9 as my WR3 was another great value. Lastly, I think Brandon Pettigrew for $4 could wind up being one of the best values in the draft considering how important TEs are in this scoring system.

Questions
1. What advice would you give to anyone participating in a 12 team auction draft?
Mostly just to jump in and enjoy the experience. Without knowing anything about pricing, etc you can start with a Top 300 Draft List from the site and write the value recorded for the first 15 players. That will generally determine the pricing framework the rest of the way. Target guys that are under-valued in straight drafts usually works well in auctions as well. But be willing to try and get guys less popular if they come at the right price.
2. What one player were you targeting that you missed out on?
I really wanted to have QB Alex Smith on my team, but mismanaged my cap where that was not possible. I feel based on his early schedule and the team's desire to run uptempo, he could be poised for a great 1st half of the FL season.
3. Do you feel you overpaid for any player(s)? If so, who was it and how did it affect the rest of your auction?
I do not think I overpaid for any player, but I think I missed lots of opportunities by structuring the team the way I did (Studs and Duds). Overall, this team would have been a lot better had I not bought one of my elite WRs and spread those dollars around to get considerably better depth all-around.

Questions
1. What was your strategy going into the auction?
I had a dual strategy for the early bids - to either pay for Calvin Johnson or Jimmy Graham, and then build the rest of the team out from there. As the process transpired, I acquired Johnson first, which then set my strategy on tight end, as I knew I wouldn't be able to afford Graham after spending 25% of my budget on Johnson. I therefore transferred $26 of the cap I had budgeted at tight end over to the running backs budget, knowing I'd wait until late in the auction to pay for a tight end (having my favorite sleeper tight end, Martellus Bennett, in mind). I did eventually acquire Bennett for one dollar less ($10.00) than I had budgeted for him.
2. Nearly 50% of your budget ($99) was spent on two players, Calvin Johnson and Ray Rice. How did this decision impact the rest of your auction?
After spending that $99 amount, I started nominating highly-regarded players that I had no interest in obtaining, in order to bleed the other owners' banks until I was closer to parity with the rest of the field in terms of cap. Chad Parsons didn't cooperate but otherwise the strategy worked, and I was eventually able to fill out my starting lineup with reasonably-priced players after waiting for about an hour for others to spend their banks. Parsons did snipe Bernard Pierce from me as he had enough cap to pay for backups if he wanted to (and he did).
3. What player was your most valuable winning bid for your team?
In terms of fantasy points I think Calvin Johnson is going to provide the most fantasy points (and the largest margin of points over other team's wide receiver stables) so he is very valuable in that sense. In terms of most potential upside, I think Ronnie Hillman at $7.00 may well be the best "value" purchase in the auction. He has top-20 potential at his position in my opinion, and many paid much more for running backs with a lower ceiling in this scoring paradigm.

Questions
1. What was your strategy going in and did you have to alter it at any time during the auction?
Basically studs and duds. The nice thing about an auction is that you don't have to be stuck with one first round pick, one second round pick, etc. You can re-apportion your assets to have a different spread of value from the board. I wanted two stud running backs and a stud tight end, and I would then pluck value at QB and WR later on. When the early stud running backs were only going for 20-25% of the cap, that made my decision even easier. Everything went basically exactly as planned.
2. Explain why QBBC is a good strategy to use in an auction draft?
In a redraft, you have to forgo some nice sleepers at RB/WR/TE to get upside QB2's in the 12th-18th rounds. While you do have to spend an extra roster spot or two to carry three or four QBs out of your draft, you can still grab your favorite end game RB/WR/TE because they almost always only cost one dollar. Once everyone gets their starting quarterback, no one is going to spend valuable dollars trying to stop you from getting what would be their backup quarterback.
3. You left $5 on the table and only spent $195 of your budget. How would you have spent the extra $5?
I would have gotten a better WR3. I definitely made a mistake of not being more aggressive when I was one of the last two of three owners with more than single-digit dollars left so that I could have the hammer at the end. It ended up that having the hammer meant no one bid me up, which mean I had money left at the end.
