On July 30th, 12 members of the Footballguys staff got together for the site's sixth mock draft of 2014. Before we can look at the results, however, here are few of the details. After all, the details of your league are as important as the players on your team. If you're loaded with yardage monsters in a league that is touchdown-only, you'll certainly struggle. If you're weak at quarterback in a league that starts two of them every week, you'll be lucky to sneak into the playoffs.

Questions for Cian
1. I see you drafted three running backs to begin your draft and then four straight wide receivers. Explain why you chose this plan of attack and why you think it is a beneficial strategy?
My best drafts this year have come when I've started TE-RB-RB-RB-WR. Because I was picking first overall in this draft, I was less tempted to take Jimmy Graham than I would normally be. I went with McCoy, someone I feel is the safest of the top four options at running back. I put an emphasis on running backs early on because I feel there is a bigger dropoff between the options at that position from rounds one through four to rounds five through 10 than there is at the wide receiver position. In this draft I went RB-RB-RB-WR-WR-WR-WR, but I actually wish I had gone RB again in the sixth or seventh round because later on I became desperate trying to find adequate running back depth when other teams were picking up players who I believe are quality WR3s. I believe it's beneficial to start running back heavy because you can still find quality options at wide receiver in the middle rounds, while tight ends and quarterbacks appear to be the deepest positions(relative to the number of starters) in fantasy this year.
2. Pick a player that you feel was your best pick in terms of ADP value and give a brief take on his 2014 outlook
It's between DeSean Jackson(4.12) and Jay Cutler(10.12). I'll go with Cutler because I generally don't want to take a quarterback at that stage of the draft but his value was too tempting. The only reason I would be concerned about Cutler's prospects in fantasy this year is because he was injured last year. His offense is littered with incredible receiving options and an above average offensive line. Another season in Marc Trestman's offense can only be good for him too. As the thirteenth quarterback off the board, he should easily outperform his ADP if healthy.
3 You took two low end TE1s before selecting your first quarterback (Jay Cutler). ADP suggests you could've selected those TEs after your QB. Russell Wilson, Nick Foles, Cam Newton, Tom Bradt, Tony Romo and Matt Ryan were on the board at pick 8.12. Do you like Cutler over those mentioned?
I'm somewhat answering this question with my answer to the previous question. My thought process with tight ends is slightly different to quarterbacks. I like to wait at both positions unless I get Graham or Gronkowski early on. The difference between the two positions is I think I can get more reliable, consistent producers at the quarterback position in the late rounds, whereas there is more upside and risk to the late round options at tight end. I view Ladarius Green as a bit of a risk and Charles Clay as a more reliable option, hopefully Green explodes, but Clay is a really good fallback option at that stage of the draft. By getting them both at the turn, I wasn't going to be concerned with matching two risky prospects together. I do like Cutler over some of the quarterbacks mentioned, not all, but like I explained, I prefer the combination of TE high, QB low that I could create.

My best value at this point of the season is Frank Gore despite the fact that I also have Darren Sproles in the same tier and I picked Sproles three rounds later. Sure, Gore is 31, but Carlos Hyde hasn't proven he's ready for third-down duty, Marcus Lattimore hasn't proven he's healthy, and Gore has been a borderline RB1 when the dreaded cliff could appear any moment. Forget the stupid RB Cliff for another year; Gore has one of the best offensive lines in football and even if Hyde earns 30 percent of the 49ers workload it's not much. I am projecting 345 carries for the 49ers ground game: 240 for Gore; 75 for Hyde; and 30 for LaMichael James. If you combine Hyde's and James' carries in this scenario, those 105 carries account for 30 percent of the 49ers total. If Gore gets hurt this year, his tenure at starter could end the moment he's helped off the field. However, I'll take that chance in the seventh round on a player who was last year's No.13 RB.

Questions for Mark
1 What was your philosophy heading into the draft?
In early rounds, I go with best player available on my draft board. This year, once one is past the elite group of receivers, the depth among second and third fantasy wide receivers is incredible. Therefore - especially in PPR leagues - I angle to snag one of the elite receivers and then wait until subsequent receivers start to pop out to me as values later on in the draft.
Did you plan on waiting two rounds before taking a running back?
Actually, I expected to go running back in the second round. With the fifth pick in the first round, I felt fairly certain that I would get one of my top two wide receivers (Calvin Johnson or Demaryius Thomas). As things transpired, I did snag Thomas. I did not expect Peyton Manning to still be available at pick #20, but when he was I felt it was too good a value to pass up (Manning is currently #8 on my Overall PPR board). In this case, my theory of best player available in the premium rounds trumped my pre-draft expectation of taking a running back in the second round.
2 You selected a dual threat of Demaryius Thomas and Peyton Manning. Explain why that's a good strategy to double up on QB-WR combos from the same team.
It depends on the quarterback-wide receiver combination, but in this case I was able to get the top-scoring duo on an offensive juggernaut. Manning had 12 games with between 307 and 462 yards passing (eight 300+ games, four 400+ games), two games near 300 yards passing (295, 289) one mediocre game with 266 yards passing, and one sub-par game with 150 yards through the air. ONE sub-par game - meanwhile, Thomas had 6 100+ yards-receiving games, and four games with multiple TDs. He never caught less than three balls in a game (3/78/0 week six and 3/106/0 week 13), and ended the year with 92/1,430/14 to his credit. I don't anticipate Manning/the Broncos slowing down this year so I see no downside to owning his favorite receiver.
Plus, it's fun to watch the fantasy score ticking up like a pinball score as Manning connects with Thomas for TDs. Fantasy football is about having fun, getting excited about NFL games while they are being played, and there is only one other duo in the NFL - Matthew Stafford/Calvin Johnson - which generates the kind of electricity that Manning/Thomas do.
Are you concerned about the Broncos difficult pass defense schedule? No, I am not. Peyton Manning loves to rise to a good challenge and he/the Broncos' offense dismantled all comers last year, basically. This is a special offense at the peak of it's production.
3 Which pick of yours do you feel was the best value selection based on ADP? Provide a brief outlook for that player this year.
Right now the consensus ADP on Peyton Manning at Footballguys.com (as of August 5) is #9, so snagging him at #20 looks pretty sweet from where I am sitting. That's the range where Aaron Rodgers/Drew Brees is usually going. I've got Manning down as the #1 fantasy quarterback in the land right now with a projection of 5,200 yards passing, 45 TDs and 12 interceptions (with 25 yards rushing!) giving him an "X" value of 102.5 compared to Rodgers' 86 and Brees' 78, so I like Manning for 1 fantasy point per week more (on average) than Rodgers and 1.5 more than Brees each week - Manning should be worth about 6.5 points per week more than Tom Brady (#13 on my quarterback' board).

Questions for Jeff
1 You selected a TE (Julius Thomas) in the first three rounds of the draft. Is that a move you were planning and do you condone that in drafts this year?
In leagues that award a point or more for a reception, the tight end position is a key roster spot that can be exploited to give you an advantage over the majority of your opponents. The top three tight ends of Jimmy Graham, Rob Gronkowski, Julius Thomas and some might argue Jordan Cameron, are in a separate elite tier where after those three (or four) the rest of the board has an expected value that drops off. If I can secure a Top 3 tight end, I know I can find good value to fill in point production at running back and wide receiver later in the draft.
2 You selected Bishop Sankey at 5.06 nearly a full round before his ADP. Talk about why you like him this year. Is he a worthy RB2?
I look at Bishop Sankey as a player the Titans are going to have to lean on and lean heavily on. I believe he was hand-picked by the team in the draft because they knew what their rushing personnel was going to look like for the 2014 season. They wanted a player who could be explosive and handle the load with Chris Johnson leaving for greener pastures in New York. It all comes down to math - I expect Sankey to have 200+ carries this year and 80-85% of the time, that equates to a Top 20 finish among running backs. When you factor in very little competition other than Shonn Greene for carries, Sankey looks pretty good. I do believe he will be a reliable RB2 this year. The number of touchdowns he scores will be the difference between RB2 and RB1.
3 You selected Drew Brees at pick 4.07. Explain why you decided to take him and how you should plan your draft if you do select one of the first quarterbacks off the board.
In a 12-team league if you're able to get three solid picks and then an elite quarterback, you pull the trigger. It's as simple as that. In short terms, if Drew Brees, Peyton Manning or Aaron Rodgers fall to the fourth round, you should have enough firepower from your first three picks to have a strong core - and then you can add an elite quarterback if one is available. In my case, I was able to secure my RB2 with my next selection (Sankey). Ray Rice, Rashad Jennings, Joique Bell and Frank Gore were also available in round five at my selection. Waiting on an RB2 in my opinion is the key if you want to take a quarterback within the first four rounds of the draft. This gives you the leeway of targeting an elite tight end as well. Wide receiver is very deep, so you can fill in your WR2 and WR3 in rounds six and seven. If you elect to wait on tight end, you'll only need to secure your WR3 or WR4. The good value at running back in round five and wide receiver in rounds six and seven afford you the ability to target quarterback and tight end if an elite quarterback like Brees, Rodgers or Manning happens to fall to you in the fourth round or later.

Questions for Steve
1 You selected two running backs (Arian Foster and LeVeon Bell) who are experiencing some injury (hamstring) woes in training camp. Explain your stance on minor injuries like these and whether or not you are concerned with regular season production.
Minor injuries when training camps have just begun, are difficult to assess. I generally ignore them, particularly with returning starters when drafting this early. Hamstrings can be troublesome as they tend to linger when players return too quickly so highly considered players may be treated more cautiously by the training staff and coaches this far ahead of the season.
2 Who is a late round running back or wide receiver that you covet in drafts and explain why you like them for the upcoming season?
Looking over current ADP for wide receivers in ppr scoring leagues, I really like each of the following:
1) WR29 Mike Wallace – If Miami’s offensive line can improve over their miserable play last year, Tannehill should be better able to utilize Wallace. I have him at WR22.
2) WR44 Hakeem Nicks – Nicks ranked in the top twelve wide receivers in 2010 and 2011 and gets a much needed new start in Indianapolis with Andrew Luck. I like the potential value he offers that low and have him ranked at WR28.
3) WR53 Greg Jennings – Regardless of who starts as quarterback for the Vikings, the play at that position should be much improved. Jennings had five straight seasons finishing at WR20 or above, two in the top five, and finished at WR39 last year. He definitely offers value.
4) WR47 Kenny Stills – Stills had a solid rookie season, but has been hindered with a quad recently and rookie Brandin Cooks has been grabbing all the attention. Stills ranked at WR47 in his rookie season and should improve greatly in his second year, assuming he recovers from his injury before the start of the season.
At the running back position, related to current ADP, I like the potential of the following:
1) RB22 Chris Johnson – Johnson has never finished below RB16 in non-ppr scoring, so he should definitely provide value this year in ppr scoring as the New York Jets have an urgent need for someone that can catch passes and make things happen.
2) RB24 Rashad Jennings – Jennings had an outstanding season last year with the Raiders after being an afterthought for most of his career with the Jaguars. He will have an opportunity to set career highs in carries and receptions as the lead back for the Giants.
3) RB40 Darren McFadden – McFadden has consistently disappointed with his every year injuries and inconsistent production, but his capabilities far outweigh his current ADP and I suspect he will be a depth pick often by me this year.
4) RB47 Tre Mason – The Rams have greatly improved their offensive line and Mason has skills to be an early contributor in his rookie season.
3 You were one of four staffers to select two running backs to begin the draft. Explain why you think that is a good strategy for this year.
I enjoy drafting in the middle of the draft as you can target value each round without having to guess which direction the flow will go. My normal pattern is to go heavier early on wide receivers, but even after selecting Arian Foster in the first round, LeVeon Bell was one of the last running backs with a three down role that is heavily featured in the passing game. He had 45 receptions as a rookie in only 13 games, so there is a lot of potential for Bell in ppr scoring leagues. If one of my top six wide receivers would have still been on the board, I would definitely have selected them as you have better opportunities for value when you keep your roster balanced as you go.

Questions for Austin
1 You have two key players coming back after suffering a major injury last year (Reggie Wayne and Jeremy Maclin). Is production after coming back from a major injury something to be concerned about in this day and age?
I definitely lower players in my rankings if they’re coming off of a major injury or have a history of nagging injuries. The physical aspect of this concern diminishes slightly each year, but the emotional ability of a player to regain his confidence and play the way he did pre-injury will always impact my rankings.
Maclin is WR26 in my PPR rankings, which matches his ADP and is higher than the FBG expert consensus of WR31. The Eagles produced two top-31 PPR receivers last season, so drafting their top pass-catcher for 2014 as the 29th receiver in this draft feels appropriate despite last year's injury. With six more receivers selected between my 6.04 pick and my 7.09 pick, I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t have been available at the end of the seventh round. Maclin is my top pick for bounce back player of the year.
Wayne was too good of a value to pass up, especially in a PPR league where we start three receivers. Sure, I have concerns that his career will fall off a cliff the same way that Marvin Harrison’s did after his 2007 injury, but the early reports about Wayne out of Colts camp have been extremely positive. I have Wayne ranked at WR36, which matches his ADP and is only one spot ahead of the FBG consensus. I’ll take him all day at WR44 as my WR5.
2 You waited on both quarterback and tight end in this draft. Is this a strategy you use often? Why do you feel this strategy can be an advantageous draft plan?
I’m always looking for quarterback and tight end value in the early rounds, but it rarely falls to me. If I’m unable to snag Jordan Cameron in the late forth or early fifth round, then I usually have at least four running backs and four receivers on my team before picking a quarterback or tight end.
Picking Cam Newton at 9.09 is earlier than I usually take a quarterback, but I couldn’t ignore Newton’s value that late. Scoring only .04 points per passing yard in this league gives Newton enough of an edge for me to take him a round or two earlier than other serviceable QB1s.
My strategy for waiting on quarterback and tight end is purely based on VBD and the fact that I have a large tier of players projected for similar production. The difference between my eighth-ranked tight end and my 16th-ranked tight end is less than 10 fantasy points over the entire season, so I’m willing to wait and grab two guys late in that tier. I try to get one high-upside guy (Dwayne Allen at 11.09) and one low-floor guy (Delanie Walker at 12.04) if I can.
3 Name one RB or WR that you covet in the late rounds of drafts this year and give a brief outlook for that player in 2014.
I nab Doug Baldwin as my last receiver in most drafts. I have him ranked WR41, about 20 spots ahead of the FBG consensus of WR60 and his ADP of WR62. His upside is somewhat capped by Seattle’s run-first offense, but it wouldn’t shock me if he finished the year as a top-30 receiver. Drafting him isn’t the swing-for-the-fences move that most late-round picks tend to be, but he’s a good way to solidify your receiver corps or flex options if you take several gambles on mid-round players.
With Golden Tate in Detroit and Sidney Rice retired, it clears the path for me to comfortably project Baldwin for 54 catches, 849 yards, and five touchdowns. If Percy Harvin struggles to stay healthy again, I could easily see Baldwin putting together a thousand-yard season. I was psyched to get him as my WR7 in the 15th round of this draft.

Of course, this puts you on your toes at other positions, given you have likely fallen behind at running back or wide receiver. After taking Graham, my best advice would be to let the draft come to you. It might be tempting to reach for a player because you need to fill the position, but it's best to live in tiers—if there are five or six players available in the current tier of need, and at least one or two will get back to you, don't eschew value at other positions.
