Every NFL season features it's share of injury-related storylines, and the 2013 season is no different. From the very high-profile rehabilitation of Robert Griffin III III's knee injury to the less-hyped progress (or lack thereof) of Jake Ballard from his torn ACL - suffered way back in Superbowl XLVI - the outcome of various players' injury woes will have a profound impact on the fortunes of the various NFL teams (and the fantasy owners who invest in players from those teams).
Now that training camps are going full throttle and the players have been in action through three preseason games, we've got a better idea about who is progressing well in their rehabs (for example, Robert Griffin III III, who is expected to be under center during week one of the regular season), and which players are struggling to get healthy (ie. Jonathan Stewart, sent to PUP for six weeks by Carolina on Tuesday due to his ongoing struggle with his surgically repaired right heel). There has been an epidemic of significant re-injuries to high-profile players during the third week of preseason games. DuJuan Harris was sent to IR by the Packers after playing just a few snaps during the third preseason contest (knee re-injury), and Kevin Kolb, who suffered a serious concussion in the third preseason game (the latest in a series of brain traumas), may have to retire as a result. Find below the skill-position injury recap reflecting the latest developments during the final week of preseason action leading into the Thursday finale of exhibition play.
Quaterbacks
BUF: Kevin Kolb was signed to a free agent deal during the offseason. Unfortunately, Kolb suffered another concussion in a series of brain traumas during his career in the third preseason game and looks like he'll be out for an extended period of time (the team is worried the brain trauma could be career-ending) - the Bills may have to start Jeff Tuel during week one of the regular season as a result. Most expect Kolb to land on IR for 2013, although the team hasn't made that move officially as of August 28.
BUF: EJ Manuel will miss the remainder of the preseason after an MRI revealed swelling in his left knee, the team announced Saturday, August 17. Manuel will have a "minor" surgical procedure on the knee and the team will then re-evaluate his availability heading into the first week of regular season. On Sunday, August 18 Bills head coach Doug Marrone said he would not rule out Manuel for Week one of regular season and said he would be willing to start Manuel even if he misses a few weeks of practice. However, in the wake of Kevin Kolb's concussion, the team seems resigned to starting Jeff Tuel in week one of regular season, which indicates that Manuel won't be ready to go.
JAX: The Jaguars announced that Blaine Gabbert will be their starter as of August 19, but he was also sidelined for the rest of the season due to a hairline fracture in his throwing hand during the second preseason game. Gabbert is expected to fully recover in time for the regular season opener.
NE: Tom Brady threw a scare into fantasy owners on August 14 when he went down clutching his knee during a New England/Tampa Bay joint practice. However, the MRI indicated that the injury was minor, and Brady played Friday, August 16 (played very well, in fact, with 11/12 for 107 yards passing, one TD and zero interceptions thrown). Reports on August 20 indicated that Brady is wearing a knee brace in practice at the request of owner Robert Kraft as a precautionary move.
NYJ: Geno Smith suffered an ankle injury during the first preseason game, and has struggled in practices since. On August 14, head coach Rex Ryan indicated that Smith might sit out the second preseason game "Well, I guess, we’ll see how it goes," Ryan said. "He’s been out there practicing, working through things... but that could be a possibility [Smith missing the game]." On August 20, the team said Geno Smith will start the team’s third preseason game if his ankle is healthy enough to play. Smit has practiced sporadically since the injury. Smith did play in the third preseason game but tossed three interceptions during the game.
NYJ: Mark Sanchez suffered a shoulder injury (bruised shoulder on his throwing arm) late during the third preseason game - as of August 28 the team indicated that it was too early to tell if Sanchez would be available for week one of the regular season. Sanchez is also dealing with an infected toenail: 'They're digging a hole in Mark Sanchez's toe big enough to pull a half dollar out of it 'cause he's got some nail that's infected. He doesn't blink, he doesn't tell me,' quarterbacks coach David Lee said on August 23, pointing out how Sanchez plays through nicks he picks up.
PHI: Michael Vick missed time at the end of the 2012 season due to a concussion/getting demoted while the Eagles struggled. He did play in week 17, though, and after working out a new, restructured contract with the team he's in the mix to be the starting quarterback. Vick does face a training camp challenge from Nick Foles for the top job, though - it will likely not be until the end of the preseason before we know which player starts for the new-look Eagles. Vick opened training camp playing with the first team. He has since been named the starter in Philadelphia.
PHI: Nick Foles wound up on IR to end the season last year, due to fractures in his hand. However, the recovery time from the injury was said to be in weeks, not months, and he split reps with Michael Vick at the recent Eagles' OTA/mini-camp. Foles is locked in a training camp duel with Vick for the starting job in Philadelphia. Though Foles played adequately during preseason, Vick was named the starter as of the third week of preseason games.
PIT: Ben Roethliberger feels fully recovered from the shoulder and ribs injuries that plagued him mid-season during 2012: "I feel great. I think I ended the season healthier than I have in a long time. I know that sounds crazy because of my ribs and chest, but I played three or four games at the end of the season and I was actually getting healthy as the season was ending," Roethlisberger said on March 6, 2013. However, it was revealed on June 5, 2013 that Roethlisberger had minor surgery on his right knee Wednesday, June 5, and is expected to be healthy for the start of training camp. It was reported that Roethlisberger could have played with the injured meniscus in his right knee, but doctors recommended he have the surgery. On June 11, Roethlisberger said the recovery from surgery to repair a torn right knee meniscus is going well and that he could play this weekend if he had to. On July 26, head coach Mike Tomlin indicated that Roethlisberger had "a little discomfort" in his right knee, but Roethlisberger was participating in team drills despite the pain. Roethlisberger has played in all three preseason games and seems ready to go for the season as of August 28.
TEN: Jake Locker (Locker dislocated non-throwing-arm shoulder twice last season) said on May 21, 2013 he feels like his old self with the shoulder, and has had no issues. "I don't know a whole lot about it as far as if it's supposed to be better or stronger, but I can tell you it feels better and just the same as it did before I got hurt," Locker said. "I haven't had any problems with it. I haven't had any moments with it where, I'm like, 'Aw, man, I can feel that,' or 'it slipped a little bit.' It feels great. It feels normal and I'm excited about that." Locker completed 16/26 passes during the Titans' scrimmage on August 3, 2013, and also threw three TD passes during the session. Locker has played in all three of the Titan's preseason games as of August 28.
WAS: As of August 20, Kirk Cousins has been diagnosed with a mild foot sprain - there no damaged ligaments in the foot. The injury should be short-term, with Cousins ready for week 1 of the regular season. On Monday, August 26 he told local reporters that there was no doubt he'd be ready for week one of regular season.
WAS: Robert Griffin III III had his knee surgically repaired January 9, 2013 (torn ACL and LCL, with some damage to the medial meniscus cartilage as well). Redskins' team Dr. James Andrews has indicated that Griffin is "well ahead" of the timetable for his recovery, and head coach Mike Shanahan has also stated that Griffin is ahead of schedule - but there is still uncertainty about Griffin being ready for the start of the season, and he may get very few reps on the practice field during training camp. A report out of Washington on June 7, 2013 indicated that Griffin was limping after the practice session that day, but other reports have stressed that Griffin hasn't suffered soreness or swelling in the joint despite doing running, cutting, and throwing the football on the side of the field with the other rehabilitating players. For his part, Griffin plans to be ready for day one of training camp, but the final decision will rest with Dr. James Andrews and the Redskins' training staff. As of June 20, Griffin was able to participate in three straight days of cutting and change-of-direction drills and did not suffer any setbacks. He is expected to continue to do similar drills to get his knee stronger. He has two scheduled checkups on his knee before the start of training camp. According to a report on July 13, the Redskins have been surprised by how well Griffin has done with tests they have asked him to do. As of August 1, 2013 Griffin is taking snaps in seven-on-seven drills - as the days pass, the team incrimentally increases the number of snaps he takes (he went from eight snaps on the opening day of camp to mid-teens by the close of the first week). Griffin remains on track to start for Washington in week one of regular season. As of August 3 there has been no swelling in Griffin's surgically repaired knee. On August 12, head coach Mike Shanahan said that without a setback, he believes QB Robert Griffin III III (knee) will be ready for Week 1 of the regular season. Griffin participated in drills before the preseason game Monday, August 19, against the Pittsburgh Steelers under the watchful eye of Dr. James Andrews. Griffin was then examined, and there was a discussion with the quarterback and the team on the plan for the next steps in Griffin's rehab. As of August 28, Griffin hasn't been officially cleared for Week one of the regular season, but reports on August 27 indicated that the team considers his status for week one to be full go - the final medical exam is expected to be a formality - Dr. James Andrews will conduct the exam on Thursday, August 29.
Running Backs
ARI: Rashard Mendenhall struggled to play on his reconstructed knee (ACL tear) during 2012, according to reports out of his new home with the Cardinals. However, he has garnered praise from head coach Bruce Arians since arriving in Arizona, and appears to be the favorite to start for the Cardinals. However, in the first week of training camp Mendenhall developed knee tendinitis and will reportedly start the second week of training camp on the sidelines resting his knee. It remains to be seen if Mendenhall will start the first preseason game on Friday, August 9. As of August 5, Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said RBs Rashard Mendenhall (knee) and Ryan Williams (knee) will continue to sit out practice but are making progress. Mendenhall missed the first preseason game but participated in the second contest, with 7/32/0 rushing and one target for zero receptions. Mendenhall led the team in rushing during the third preseason game, with 6/47/0 to his credit, but experienced "looseness" in his rebuilt knee. As of August 27 he was reportedly going to be fine for week one of regular season, but the ongoing series of nagging problems with his knee is a red flag for fantasy owners.
ARI: Ryan Williams had no confidence in his surgically repaired knee (patella tendon tear/surgery during 2011) during the 2012 season. He stated on May 23, 2013 that he was scared to have the ball in his hands, and added: "I was trying to protect my leg instead of trying to protect the football. It's a scary sight being a running back and being scared to run the ball. That's something that no running back should feel." Williams' season ended in week five due to a shoulder injury that sent him to IR (he averaged under three yards a carry when on the field during 2012). He has since received more treatments for his surgically repaired knee during the first week of training camp, and was on crutches as of August 3 due to an irritation of the fatty pad under the patella tendon in question. Williams is considered questionable for the team's first preseason game. As of August 5, Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said RBs Rashard Mendenhall (knee) and Ryan Williams (knee) will continue to sit out practice but are making progress. A report on August 14 indicated that Williams had a platelet rich plasma injection into his sore knee sometime early in August in an attempt to promote healing in the joint. As of August 12 Williams is considered "day-to-day" as he continues his rehabilitation. On August 19, Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said Williams is not expected to play in the team's third preseason game. Arians indicated Williams needs to start playing if he wants to make the final roster. Williams did play in the third preseason game (2/10/0 rushing), but was reportedly offered for trade as of August 25. It remains to be seen if Williams will have a team once the NFL cuts down to 53-man rosters.
ATL: Steven Jackson may be limited in preseason as the coaching staff doesn't feel that he needs a lot of repetitions, according to reports on July 6, 2013. Jackson is not injured, the team is simply planning to limit the contact he receives in games that don't count. He posted 12/51/0 rushing and 3/15/0 receiving in the third preseason game. Jackson is ready to go for week one of regular season.
BAL: Bernard Pierce has fully recovered from the bone bruise in his knee that bothered him during the playoffs earlier this year. He's also reportedly gained 10 pounds during offseason training, and now weighs 228 pounds entering the 2013 preseason. On July 28, head coach John Harbaugh stated "I'd say the first two days of practice, he's a better player now than he was last year even at the end of the season,". However, as of August 10 Pierce was missing practice time due to a sprained left knee. He did return to practices on August 12. Pierce didn't handle the football in the second preseason game, after spraining his knee in the first preseason game. He recorded 10/7/0 rushing and 2/6/0 receiving in the third preseason game vs. Carolina.
BUF: As of March 22, 2013 Fred Jackson was cleared to begin football activities again - "I'm on track, ready to go. I'm trying to hit the ground running and do as much as I can. I've been cleared by all the doctors so I'm ready to get back into it." Jackson spent much of 2012 on the sidelines due to LCL and MCL sprains in his right knee. As of August 2, Jackson is reportedly 10 pounds heavier than his 2012 playing weight - his role during 2013 remains up in the air according to coach Doug Marrone. Jackson posted 7/28/0 rushing in the second preseason game, and had 6/18/0 rushing and 1/6/0 receiving in the third game at Washington.
CAR: Jonathan Stewart was forced out of the Panthers' lineup from week 12 onwards during 2012 due to a left ankle injury. Corrective surgery was performed on the ankle January 19, 2013, and also had corrective surgery on his other ankle as well. Stewart was limited in the Panthers' OTAs during late May and isn't expected to get into practices until training camp. Stewart has a history of ankle and foot injury issues - fantasy owners need to watch his rehabilitation this summer carefully before investing a pick in this particular running back. Stewart was reported to not be ready for practices as of June 13. On July 11, head coach Ron Rivera said Stewart was "progressing" - Stewart started training camp on the active/PUP list but he is considered out "indefinately" as the team hasn't set a time table for his return to action. As of August 12, head coach Ron Rivera stated that Stewart's rehab is on schedule and that Stewart may be ready for the start of regular season. However, on August 21 Rivera indicated that Stewart will not play in the team's third preseason game Thursday, August 22, and the club isn't ruling out placing him on the PUP list, which would cause him to miss at least the first six weeks of the season. "At this point anything is an option," head coach Ron Rivera said. "What you're hoping is you can get him on the football field and we'll see once the doctor gets a chance to look at him." The team announced on August 27 that Stewart would start the regular season on the PUP list, meaning he'll miss at least the first six games of the season (he may be placed on IR after his time on PUP, depending on how his ankle progresses).
CIN: Bernard Scott tore his left ACL in October 2012, and watched his team draft Giovani Bernard in the April NFL draft. Though Scott received medical clearance on March 18, 2013 to begin running, cutting and doing explosive weight training, he has probably worn out his welcome in Cincinnati after a series of season-ending injuries have derailed his Bengals' career. Scott reportedly (July 10) could start training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list as he is coming back from the torn ACL. He was placed on the active/PUP list on July 24. Sources indicated on August 8 that Scott is likely to start the regular season on the PUP list (meaning he'd miss at least the first six games of 2013).
CIN: Cedric Peerman missed time at the end of last season due to an ankle injury, and didn't play in the team's playoff game. However, he was resigned to a two-year deal in March, so it appears that his ankle is not a concern entering the 2013 preseason. Peerman missed some offseason workouts because of an undisclosed injury and landed on the Non-Football Injury list as of July 25 due to foot and ankle injuries he suffered during offseason activities unrelated to football. He's expected to be out 1-2 weeks as of July 25. He carried the football four times for 17 yards in the second preseason game on August 17. Peerman didn't garner a carry in the third preseason contest.
CLE: Montario Hardesty underwent arthroscopic surgery on his knee August 15, 2013 and is expected to miss the first two-to-three regular season games as he rehabs from this most recent knee surgery (he's also torn the ACLs in both of his knees). Hardesty is also dealing with a dislocated right thumb. On August 27, Hardesty was placed on IR ending his 2013 season.
CLE: Browns chief executive officer Joe Banner said on August 18 that Dion Lewis (broken leg sufferd in the second preseason game August 15) is undergoing surgery Monday, August 19, to repair his fractured fibula. Banner said the team will not know if Lewis can play again this season until after the surgery. The most recent reports indicate that Lewis will go on IR - his season appears to be over. He was placed on IR August 26.
CLE: Trent Richardson had his lower right leg stepped on during organized team activities in late May. At the time, the team said he had a minor muscle strain. However, since then the team has become concerned that the injury could become a stress fracture, and head coach Rod Chudzinski confirmed on June 4 that Richardson will be held out of further practices until training camp starts in August. Footballguys.com's resident doctor, Jene Bramel, suspects that the lower right leg injury is in fact a bone bruise that could develop into a stress fracture. In any case, bone bruises can take anywhere from a few days to months to heal - this situation will be an ongoing item to watch once training camps open. Additionally, Richardson suffered multiple cracked ribs last season (week six) and played through the injury thereafter - he has indicated (April 14, 2013) that he may have 'lingering pain' from that injury going forwards, though he seemed to walk back that statement on April 16. Richardson did start practicing when training camp opened, but then he got kicked in the shin and was sidelined again. As of August 3, he is considered questionable for the first preseason game after missing practice due to the latest iteration of shin injury. Peterson was expected back at practice August 6. Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski explained on August 7 that Richardson would not play in the first preseason game but would have played if the game counted. On August 10 coach Chudzinski said he hoped that Richardson could play in the second preseason game. Richardson did play on August 15 and posted 6/33/0 rushing (5.5 yards per carry) during his time on the field. He had 7/31/0 rushing and 1/10/0 receiving during the third preseason game - Richardson looks set to be the starter on opening day.
DAL: On August 24, Lance Dunbar (foot sprain suffered August 19) said he will be out of his walking boot in a few days and hopes to be ready to play for the start of the regular season. The time-frame on his return is 3-4 weeks, so it'll be close for Dunbar to be ready by the game vs. NYG.
DAL: DeMarco Murray partially participated in practice on May 30, doing individual drills on the side of the field. He appears to be recovering from the hamstring pull that limited him earlier in the month, and is expected to be fine for practices later in the summer. On June 13, Murray (hamstring) said he felt like he was "back where [he needs] to be" and is expected to participate in minicamp workouts Thursday, June 13. As noted above, Murray missed the first few organized team activities back in May because of a slight hamstring strain. On July 10, 2013 Murray said he's "100 percent, ready to go" heading into training camp later this month. Murray, along with the other starters, sat out the Hall of Fame game on August 4 as a precautionary measure. Murray had a cameo in the second preseason game with 5/14/0 rushing at Arizona. Murray got benched after fumbling in the third preseason game, but returned in the second half and eventually posted 12/51/0 rushing with 2/14/1 receiving.
DAL: Joseph Randle (thumb injuy) said he will get the cast taken off his thumb as of the third week in June. He said at that time that he plans wear a small brace on his thumb when training camp begins. Randle played in the Hall of Fame game but was behind Lance Dunbar, who opened the game with the second stringers. Randle led the Cowboys in rushing at Arizona during the second preseason game, with 8/16/0 rushing, and added 1/-1/0 receiving during the contest. Randle also led the team in rushing during the third contest, with 16/66/0.
DEN: Knowshon Moreno had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee early this offseason after injuring it in the third quarter of the divisional playoff game. He reportedly had stem cells from his pelvis injected into the right knee in an attempt to regenerate the tissues that were damaged. As of May 20, 2013 Moreno was not medically cleared to participate in the first round of Denver organized team activities. On June 1, head coach John Fox commented on Moreno's situation saying "He's coming along. We're going to be very cautious. When the doctors give him the full-go go-ahead, he'll be doing everything." On June 11, Moreno was running routes during organized team activities as part of a program of bringing him back into practices on the field. Moreno has been practicing during training camp and appears to be healed from his arthroscopic surgery. Moreno has been nursing a bruised right knee since just before the second preseason game. He played well in the third preseason game, with 5/33/0 rushing and 3/42/0 receiving to his credit.
DET: Mikel LeShoure missed OTAs during May due to a hamstring pull, and he may not be ready to return to practices for awhile longer, according to remarks from head coach Jim Schwartz on June 4, 2013: "[It's taking] maybe a little bit longer than we would've thought... We'll get him back there soon. He's working hard, he's just not working on the field." On June 17, Leshoure commented "I've just got to get healthy. Last year I was just dealing with a lot of things, nagging injuries weren't where they needed to be coming off the first year of my injuries. I've just got to get healthy and consistency will come when you're healthy." LeShoure had one carry for zero yards in the second preseason game, and wasn't played unit late in the game - he appears to be buried on the depth chart. He ran for 5/32/0 in the third preseason game.
DET: Lions head coach Jim Schwartz indicated on August 25 that Montell Owens (unspecified knee injury) does not have a long-term injury but Schwartz would not go into any details.
GB: Alex Green stated on May 14, 2013 that he never fully recovered from his October 2011 ACL surgery last season: "I came back, I got close to it, but once I got close, then I had a couple setbacks. I was never really quite where I wanted to be, but I made great strides in the off-season. I'm definitely getting ready for this year." The Packers drafted Eddie Lacy and Johnathan Franklin in the April draft, putting Green's future with the Packers in doubt. Though Green opened training camp with the first team, he is expected to be pushed behind Lacy and Franklin in short order. Green has appeared in all three preseason games to date, and with DuJuan Harris now on IR Green looks like he'll be Eddie Lacy's backup entering regular season.
GB: DuJuan Harris has missed training camp due to a knee injury and is on the PUP list as of August 5 - despite this, Harris was listed as the starter on the first depth chart the Packers released on August 5. Harris was activated on August 12 and was given the first carry with first team during practice on Monday, August 19. However, Harris re-injured his troublesome knee in the third preseason game and is now on IR - his season is over.
GB: Eddie Lacy's toe surgery (that caused him to fall in the April draft) is no longer a concern according to the Crimson Tide's team doctor. Dr. E. Lyle Cain Jr. said on May 10 that the "window of legitimate concern has passed." Said Cain, "If you fused it completely, it'd give you a stiff big toe and you can't push off and that's a big problem. In Eddie's case, he does not have that. His fusion does not affect his big-toe motion." On May 29, Green Bay signed Lacy to a four-year contract. Lacy posted 65 yards on eight carries in the first Green Bay scrimmage of the year - he ran for several long-gainers and looks healed from the toe surgery. However, Lacy was sidelined from practice on Wednesday, August 7 due to a hamstring injury and missed the first preseason contest. The injury is reported to be minor but fantasy owners should monitor Lacy's comeback from the injury as hamstring injuries can become nagging, recurring issues if not allowed to heal fully before a player returns to action. Lacy sat out of practice on Monday, August 12. Lacy looked powerful in the second preseason game with 8/40/0 rushing and 1/11/0 receiving at St. Louis. In the third preseason game the Seattle D limited Lacy to 8/-5/0 rushing, but given DuJuan Harris' landing on IR Lacy looks like the unchallenged starter in Green Bay entering the first game of regular season.
GB: James Starks struggled with a knee injury during 2012, and ended up playing in just six games - the Packers drafted Eddie Lacy and Johnathan Franklin in the April draft, putting Starks future with the Packers in jeopardy. However, Starks is said to be running extremely hard during training camp, and was singled out as "outstanding" during camp by running backs coach Alex Van Pelt as of August 1. However, on August 17 Starks managed just 3/4/0 rushing at St. Lous in the second preseason game. He didn't touch the football during the third preseason game - Starks looks like he's on the roster bubble as of August 28.
HOU: Arian Foster left the organized team activity on May 28, 2013 due to a strained calf. An MRI was subsequently performed. Head coach Gary Kubiak called it a "pretty good calf strain" on May 29, but asserted that Foster is "going to be fine". Foster will be getting treatment in the months leading up to training camp - he is expected to be ready for the start of training camp. On June 17, Foster stated that it was "more than likely" that he'll be ready for training camp. However, Foster hasn't taken the field during training camp yet, missing practices despite head coach Gary Kubiak's expressed expectation that Foster would be in the sessions. Foster is also dealing with a sore back and isn't expected to play in the preseason opener on Friday, August 9. Head coach Kubiak reiterated on Tuesday, August 13 that Foster is "fine" - except for back tightness. On August 20, coach Kubiak said he fully expects Foster (back) to be ready for the season opener September 9 against the San Diego Chargers. Foster was unable to practice Monday, August 19. "Yes I am because I watch him work," Kubiak said. "I've been watching him. He's basically going through practices or has been since we've been in camp on his own with Jeff. Obviously, there's been a little setback as we try to get some soreness out of him. But from what I've seen, yes. It's not like he's been standing around for the last three weeks. Obviously, we want to get him back out here as quick as I can." Local observers are not so optimistic about Foster, however, and some feel that Foster is in jeopardy of missing the first regular season game. Foster finally joined practices on Friday, August 23, and has since indicated on August 26 that "Over the past couple of months, I had the chance to just train and rehab and work on my body and didn’t have all those carries in training camp. Even during camp, I got a long rest (because of the back injury). It’s usually a grind. My body feels great."
IND: Ahmad Bradshaw was signed by the Colts in mid-June even as he continues to recover from offseason foot surgery. He started training camp July 23 on the PUP list. As of July 30, Bradshaw was said to be a few weeks away from practicing - he likely won't be on the field until late August. As of August 4 he wasn't expected to start practicing with the team until late August, the Colts reiterated. However, Bradshaw took handoffs in a walk-through early in August and the NFL determined that Bradshaw had practice, so he was taken off of PUP on August 12. As of August 13, Bradshaw asserted that he feel's 100% healed, and on August 13 head coach Chuck Pagano called Bradshaw an "every-down" back. It remains to be seen if Bradshaw will handle the football during preseason - the Colts are expected to be very cautious about playing Bradshaw during games that don't count. Bradshaw finally practiced in full pads on August 21, but didn't take part in team (contact) drills. He is progressing in his rehab, but his role for the Colts remains an open question. As of August 27 there are no plans for Bradshaw to take reps during the remaining preseason game.
IND: Donald Brown ended the 2012 season by landing on IR December 11, 2012 due to an ankle sprain (suspected to be a high ankle sprain). He should be fully recovered as of June, 2013 but Browns' injury history and the emergence of Vick Ballard as the lead back for the Colts has depressed Browns' fantasy outlook entering the 2013 preseason. The signing of Ahmad Bradshaw could mean that Brown will be a casualty when the team cuts down to the final 53-man roster. Brown played in the second preseason game with 6/21/0 rushing and 3/17/0 receiving to his credit. He posted 5/35/0 rushing in the third preseason game.
Ex-IND Now-BAL: On March 26, 2013 head coach Chuck Pagano commented that Delone Carter needed to stay healthier during 2013 - then on May 23, news broke that Carter had recently undergone shoulder surgery of unspecified extent. We'll see if Carter can get healthy in time for training camp - he may be on the roster bubble this year and missing time during OTAs due to the shoulder situation isn't going to help Carter stick on the roster. Carter was traded to Baltimore on August 21 - he's posted 10/27/0 rushing during preseason so far.
JAX: Justin Forsett (toe injury) is no longer wearing a walking boot and was able to jog Monday, August 5. He said he hopes to be able to play in the first preseason game. So far, he has yet to appear during preseason. As of August 26, Forsett has missed the entire preseason due to this turf toe injury - his position on the depth chart is unclear, and there are whispers his roster spot may be in jeopardy.
JAX: Maurice Jones-Drew suffered a Lisfranc fracture in his left foot during week seven of 2012. He eventually got corrective surgery (but it wasn't until the last Friday of 2012). He was reportedly out of shape at the beginning of spring organized team activities, and has only been able to run at 75% speed so far this year. On May 14, he commented "Lately, it's been one day on, a day off, two days on, a day off — it's part of the process. I'm closer than I think. I just want to take my time and make sure we do it the right way." Jones-Drew is said to be on pace to be ready for the open of training camp as of early June, but it remains to be seen if he'll be able to go full speed when camp gets underway. On June 15, Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell said the plan is for Jones-Drew to fully participate in practice once training camp begins. Caldwell said he is not concerned that Jones-Drew will be rusty if he comes to camp in shape. On June 25, Jones-Drew asserted that the foot "feels great". Jones-Drew has been limited in practices since the start of training camp, but has been cutting on the foot and reports that he feels great. On August 7 Jones-Drew stated "There's no pain in my foot. I'm cutting great, no swelling. It's like back to normal again." Jones-Drew was held out of the first preseason game for precautionary reasons. On August 10 the team indicated that they were not sure if Jones-Drew would play in the second exhibition. Jones-Drew did play briefly, with 3/9/0 rushing and 1/20/0 receiving during the contest. Jones-Drew had seven carries for 28 yards in the third preseason game.
KC: Jamaal Charles suffered a minor toe injury during early-June OTAs but was practicing in full again as of June 4, 2013 - X-rays showed that the injury wasn't serious and Charles' quick return to practice bears out that finding. Charles is fully participating in training camp and is reported to be a favorite target of new QB Alex Smith. However, Charles suffered a scary-looking injury during practice on August 12 - he was carted off the field due to a foot injury. On August 13, MRIs determined that Charles had not suffered a serious foot injury. However, on August 14 it was reported that Charles will likely sit out the second preseason game against the 49ers for precautionary reasons. Charles is reportedly walkning on his sprained foot but is having trouble pushing off the foot. "His ankle ligaments were fine," Chiefs trainer Rick Burkholder said on Tuesday, August 13. "He had some pain on the outside bone of his foot. We did an X-ray. That was negative. There's a tendon that attaches right at that spot and that's what is sore right now. That's why we call it a strain." Knile Davis is taking first team reps while Charles nurses his sore foot. Charles began practicing again on August 18 and reportedly showed "no hesitation" about running the football. However, on August 19 Charles explained: "Playing in the NFL you get weird injuries. This is one of the weird injuries I've had. It started in my foot and it traveled all the way to the top of my foot and now it's stuck in the middle of my right leg." Charles did play briefly in the third preseason game, with 2/4/0 receiving to his credit.
MIN: FB Jerome Felton underwent emergency appendectomy surgery on Wednesday, August 14 and will miss the remainder of preseason as he recovers from the procedure. Felton was hit with a three-game suspension (DUI) on August 26 so he'll have plenty of time to heal up from his appendectomy before he returns to action in week four.
MIN: Adrian Peterson had sports hernia surgery in the first week of February 2013 - he said on May 29, 2013 that he was almost 100% recovered and that he is lifting more weights than ever now. The hernia surgery appears to be a non issue heading into training camp. On June 20, Peterson reiterated that he feels great: "Feeling good, feeling strong, feeling 100 percent," Peterson said. "Ready to roll when training camp comes around." Peterson is being limited in camp for precautionary reasons and likely won't see much work during meaningless preseason games as the team saves him for the week 1 regular-season opener. As expected, Peterson has not played in the first or second preseason games. He had a cameo appearance in the third contest but wasn't handed the football (or touched by the defense).
NE: Stevan Ridley has fully recovered from the severe concussion he suffered in the AFC Championship game last January. As of May 3, 2013, Ridley commented "I thank the Lord that I'm healthy and brought me back. All I can do now is move forward from that, but it was a nice hit that I took. Just got to shake it off. Comes with the game. It was one of the worst ones that I took in my life. I'll be out here this year ready to go." Given the NFL's heightened sensitivity to concussions, a prior concussion history (such as Ridley now has) could lead to weeks off the field if he suffers a subsequent concussion during 2013. Ridley has practiced fully since the start of training camp - the only concern is reports of some issues with ball security during team drills. Ridley had 5/18/0 rushing in the second preseason game vs. Tampa Bay. He posted nine rushes for six yards at Detroit during the third preseason game.
NO: Pierre Thomas missed the final game of the 2012 season due to a knee injury - however, he is expected to be part of the mix at running back for 2013. Thomas addressed the team's plans on May 8, 2013 saying "[Coach Payton] said we've got to get back to running the ball, having 100-yard games non-stop. I can't wait. I'm excited and I know everybody else is excited." As of August 5, Thomas is listed as the Saints' first-string running back. He participated in team drills on August 13, but missed the second preseason game due to the mystery injury. Thomas scored on a 51-yard TD reception in the third preseason game and appears to be ready for the start of regular season.
NYG: Andre Brown was placed on IR/designated to return on November 26, 2012 due to a broken fibula. He didn't get back on the field as the Giants' season ended before he was eligible to return. However, Brown was re-signed to a one-year, $2.023 million contract on April 23, 2013, and is reported to be the Giant's short-yardage/goal-line back for 2013. The broken fibula appears to be a thing of the past. As of May 29, local reports indicated that Brown is penciled in as the Giants' goal-line back for the 2013 season. As of the start of training camp the coaching staff anticipates Brown running as part of the team's running-back-by-committee during the 2013 season. Brown led the Giants in rushing during the second preseason game, with 8/36/0 rushing and added 1/6/0 rushing to his performance, and he posted 7/17/0 rushing in the third exhibition contest.
NYG: Henry Hynoski (knee injury, suffered in May 2012 - a lateral plateau fracture on his left knee) hopes to be ready for Week 1 of the 2013 season. Hynoski may be a bit ahead in his rehabilitation, according to reports on July 11. As of July 30 Hynoski was not doing weight-bearing exercises on the knee, and he appears to be a long shot to play at the start of regular season.
NYJ: Chris Ivory has missed practice time in training camp due to a hamstring injury - the injury surfaced on July 31. On August 6 head coach Rex Ryan said "Hey, he's had a hamstring," Ryan said. "When the trainers clear him, he'll be ready to roll. He's champing at the bit to get out there. He's working extremely hard." Ivory missed the first preseason game due to his ongoing hamstring issue. He returned to individual drills on Sunday, August 11 and participated fully in practice on August 12 - "He looked excellent," said Ryan. "That's one every Jets fan has been waiting to see." Ivory posted 6/13/0 rushing vs. the Jaguars in the second preseason game, and managed 8/15/0 rushing with 1/16/0 receiving in the third cross-town exhibition against the Giants.
Ex-NYJ: Joe McKnight suffered an apparent concussion on August 2, 2013, and was sidelined again on August 13 after suffering another (apparently repeat) head injury/concussion. McKnight was reported to be "wobbly" on the practice field on the 13th. On August 21, McKnight confirmed he was suffering from concussion symptoms prior to the second preseason game. McKnight is expected to play during the third preseason contest. However, he didn't appear and has since been cut.
OAK: As of April 7, 2013 Darren McFadden reported that he was 100% healthy after suffering a high-ankle sprain during the 2012 season. McFadden enters a contract season this year, so he's got a lot of incentive to stay healthy. He has reportedly looked good in the team's new blocking scheme during the first week of training camp. However, on August 18 we learned that McFadden (shoulder) was limited by a shoulder injury Sunday, during practice, but coach Dennis Allen said he does not believe the injury will keep him from playing Friday, August 23, against the Chicago Bears. Fantasy owners should note that the ding did keep McFadden out of the third exhibition, however. On August 26 coach Allen said that McFadden would "absolutely" play in week one, but McFadden's tenderness and lack of ability to play through injuries is a concern for fantasy owners who may consider drafting him for the upcoming season.
OAK: As of June 12, Latavius Murray had missed organized team workouts due to a sore foot. He'll be monitored closely to help Murray heal up in time for training camp. However, Murray hasn't practiced since the opening of training camp - there is no official word on when he may be back in action. As of August 4 Murray was still sitting out of training camp due to injury. On August 21 Murray had an ankle arthroscopically operated on - he's now expected to miss the beginning of regular season.
PHI: As of August 6, LeSean McCoy was dealing with a knee injury and was considered day-to-day. He missed the preseason opener later in the week. McCoy played in the second preseason game with 8/47/1 rushing and added 3/16/0 receiving during the game. He posted 5/9/0 rushing and 2/19/0 receiving in the third preseason game.
PHI: Bryce Brown is recovering from a tweaked ankle - as of August 26 Brown was expected to practice Tuesday, August 27. This injury appears to be minor.
Ex-PHI Now-PIT: Felix Jones had sore hamstrings limiting him in practices as of August 6. However, he played in the preseason opener on August 9 and posted 8/31/0 rushing with 1/9/0 receiving. He carried the ball 4/14/0 and had one reception for three yards in the second preseason game. Subsequently, Jones was traded to Pittsburgh - he managed 8/29/0 rushing for the Steelers in the third exhibition contest.
PIT: Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (sore knee) said he expected to participate in practice Sunday, August 4. Bell has been impressive in training camp so far. However, on August 10 head caoch Mike Tomlin said that he hadn't seen enough of Bell during practice prior to the first preseason game, so he didn't play Bell in the preseason opener. Bell was set to resume practicing on August 12. Bell played four snaps in the second preseason game, but came out with a foot injury of unspecified magnitude. He's had an MRI, and two medical opinions, to explore the nature of the injury. As of August 21, reports indicate that Bell does have a Lisfranc injury, but that the team is hoping he can go the non-surgical route for recovery (he'll be out 6-10 weeks in that case). If Bell needs surgery to correct the injury, he'll likely be out for the 2013 season. As of August 21, it appears that Bell will not be on the field during September, 2013 (and that's the best case scenario). Since August 21 there has been back-and-forth between the team and outsiders about the exact nature of Bell's mid-foot sprain, but the fact remains he'll miss several weeks rehabbing the injury, no matter what it is called. Bell shed his walking boot on August 28 to begin rehabbing the injured ligaments in his foot.
SD: Danny Woodhead had not participated in practice since Friday, August 2, and head coach Mike McCoy did not give a specific reason for the absence. Woodhead did not play in the first preseason game. However, he returned to practice on Monday, August 12. Woodhead didn't handle the football in the second preseason game. He did play in the third exhibition, and posted 1/3/0 rushing and 2/10/0 receiving vs. Arizona.
SEA: Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said Sunday, August 4, that Robert Turbin (foot injury) has been cleared by team doctors to return to the practice field. Christine Michael had been working with the second-team offense in Turbin's absence. Turbin posted 9/35/0 rushing during the second preseason game. Turbin put up 10/50/0 rushing and 4/22/0 receiving during the third preseason game.
SF: Kendall Hunter is still recovering from his November 2012 Achilles injury, but was finally removed from the PUP list on August 10 and is ready to begin participating in training camp at some level. He played in the third preseason game with 3/13/0 rushing to his credit.
SF: Marcus Lattimore was placed on the Non-football injury list as of July 20. He is expected to miss most of regular season - the team is openly talking about 2013 being a "redshirt" season for Lattimore so he isn't likely to have much value except in dynasty leagues. On August 19 the team confirmed that Lattimore will miss the entire season.
STL: Zac Stacy did not play in the second preseason game Saturday, August 17, against the Green Bay Packers. Team and league sources described Stacy has having "general soreness", but he has been seen with his right leg wrapped at some practices the previous week. He posted 5/8/0 rushing and 2/19/0 receiving at Denver during the third preseason game.
TB: Doug Martin took a knee to the helmet early during the game at New England - he posted one carry for four yards - and was held out of the rest of the contest as a precaution, but he passed his concussion test (meaning he wasn't concussed). Head coach Greg Schiano stated that Martin was fine on the plane ride home from Gillette Stadium. On August 19 Martin was cleared for participation in the non-contact portion of practice, which was a precautionary move. He appears to have avoided a serious head injury/concussion. He was held out of the third exhibition game as a precaution.
TEN: Shonn Greene "rolled" his ankle on August 24 but is expected to practice as usual going forwards - this is a minor injury concern as of August 28.
WAS: Rookie Chris Thompson still needs to heal following a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, according to a report on July 12. He was expected to receive full clearance to practice around July 5, 2013, but that move is still pending as of July 12. Thompson has reportedly developed "soreness and tightness" in his surgically repaired knee and missed at least three practices as of August 2, 2013. Roy Helu is reportedly tightening his grip on the #2 job behind Alfred Morris, leaving Thompson in fantasy limbo. Thompson played in the third preseason game, but fumbled the football, leading head coach Mike Shanahan to say: "No matter how good you are, if you fumble you can’t play,".
Wide Receivers
ATL: Julio Jones sat out of the first preseason game on August 8, 2013 due to tight hamstrings. On August 10, coach Mike Smith said Jones was limited during practice. Smith said he expects Jones to fully participate in the near future. As of August 13 Jones had resumed practicing and he led the team in receiving during the second preseason game with 3/55/1 - it appears the hamstrings are just fine leading into the third preseason game. Jones saw eight targets for 4/81/0 receving in the third preseason game.
ATL: Roddy White had just one target and zero receptions before sitting out the rest of the exhibition at Baltimore due to an ankle injury suffered during the contest. "I have not had a chance to speak in depth with Roddy," coach Smith said after the game. "We made a decision that Roddy was not going to come back in the ball game." An MRI on Friday, August 16 indicated that the ankle injury is "minor" - reports out of Atlanta indicate that he'd start again next week if this were regular season, but that the team is expected to hold him out of the third exhibition contest for precautionary reasons. White did miss the third preseason game.
Ex-AZ: Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said on June 14 that he hopes Ryan Swope will be ready for training camp. Swope has missed some offseason workouts because of reported concussion-like symptoms. "We were very, very, very surprised about it," Arians told NFL.com on Friday, June 21. "I'm not sure what he can do, I'm not sure what the doctors are going to do at this point. I hope ... because the kid is a great talent, and it would be a shame. But having Austin Collie last year go through this same thing, it's scary." On July 25 it was announced that Swope's fifth concussion forced him to retire from professional football.
BUF: Kevin Elliott has a torn ACL and will miss the remainder of the season, according to head coach Doug Marrone on August 16, 2013.
BUF: Stevie Johnson strained his back during OTAs in April, and missed some of the sessions in May, but returned to participate on May 28, and reports from that session indicated that his range of motion looked good. Johnson reportedly had a slight fracture of his L-5 vertebra - "It got to the point where, 'It's got to be something more than a strain or something' because every time I sit down it's hurting," Johnson said on June 13. "Every time I stand up it's hurting. I lay down, it's hurting. I went through rehab and it wasn't helping. So I got the MRI, and it was a slight fracture." A cortisone shot and an epidural were part of his recovery. Unfortunately, Johnson suffered a strained hamstring in the first week of training camp, and reports on August 2 indicated that Johnson is now expected to miss the majority of preseason. He doesn't have a torn hamstring, according to a MRI, but the strain is considered serious. Fantasy owners want to monitor Johnson's recovery from this injury as hamstring strains can become nagging injuries if they aren't allowed to heal properly. As of August 19, Johnson is expected to play in the team's third preseason game Saturday, August 24, against the Washington Redskins. Johnson did extensive work in practice Monday, and he's reportedly anxious to test his leg. He led the team in receiving during the third preseason game, with seven targets for 4/28/0 receiving.
CAR: Domenik Hixon missed the Panthers' preseason opener due to an unspecified leg injury. He has sinced missed practices and the second preseason game due to a hamstring injury, and is rumored to have suffered a setback in recovering from the hamstring injury. Hixon also sat out of the third preseason game. He may be on the roster bubble in Carolina.
CAR: James Shaw has been nursing a hamstring injury during the second week of training camp, and didn't catch a pass during the first preseason game, nor did he snag one in the third contest.
CHI: As of August 4, Earl Bennett was being evaluated for a possible concussion. As Bennett had a concussion last December, this re-injury could keep him out for multiple weeks if it is a serious brain injury. Bennett started missing practices on August 5 as a concussion was confirmed. He's missed all three preseason games to date.
CHI: Alshon Jeffery tweaked a hamstring during June OTAs, it was reported on June 11. The team was limiting his participation in sessions as a precautionary move. According to local reports on August 4, Jeffery has established himself as the team's #2 wide receiver during the first week of training camp, and looks set as a starter heading into the slate of preseason games. Jeffery has played during preseason but so far has just two targets to his credit. During the third preseason game Jeffery led the team in receiving with eight targets for 7/77/0 receiving.
CHI: Brandon Marshall did not participate in practice Wednesday, June 12, because the team wants to be careful with him since he is recovering from hip surgery. Marshall did practice on June 11 - the team is reportedly bringing him along easily to help facilitate his full recovery from the surgery - Marshall checked into training camp in excellent shape and is full-go for the preseason practices/games. He returned to practices July 31. Marshall led the Bears in receiving vs San Diego with 4/38/1 on five targets. During the third preseason game Marshall posted zero receptions despite having four targets during the game.
CIN: On August 4, Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said WR A.J. Green (knee injury) will not be traveling with the team to Atlanta for joint practices and a preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons. The move is seen as precautionary - Green's sore knee is considered a minor concern as of early August. On August 10 coach Lewis said Green "might" practice prior to the second preseason game. As of the week of August 19, Green has been participating in 11-on-11 drills during practice and has declared his knee 100 percent healthy. Green played in the third preseason game and led the team in receiving with five targets for 3/42/0 receiving. He looks ready to rock heading into regular season.
CIN: As of August 4, Andrew Hawkins' sprained ankle was improving but he still hasn't established a time table for returning to practices. As of August 10, the team indicated that Hawkins would be in a cast on his ankle or at least ten days before the team decided what move to make with Hawkins next (perhaps IR/designated to return list?). Hawkins has avoided a cast as of August 26 but may still be placed on IR/designated to return.
CIN: Mohamed Sanu suffered a stress fracture in his left foot that was surgically repaired in the first week of December, 2012. As of April 15, 2013 Sanu declared himself 100% recovered from the surgery, and said on May 21 that "I feel real strong and explosive. It felt great to be back out there on the field doing the things I was doing last year: running routes full speed, stopping and going, run blocking, catching balls again." A report on June 27 indicated that Sanu is the favorite to start across from A.J. Green entering training camp. Sanu was listed as the starter across from A.J. Green on August 2 - he is reportedly running well in camp and appears 100% healthy entering preseason. Sanu saw five targets for 3/36/1 receiving in the second preseason game, and added three targets for 2/16/0 in the third preseason tilt.
CLE: Davone Bess suffered a back injury that forced him out of the final three games of the 2012 season. However, he was signed by the Browns (to a three-year extension) after a trade with Miami during the 2013 NFL draft. He is currently penciled in as the #3 wide receiver behind Josh Gordon and Greg Little. A report on June 15 indicated that Bess is expected to start in Cleveland while Gordon is out on his two game substance-abuse related suspension (codeine in cough syrup led to a blown drug test, according to Gordon). Bess didn't catch a pass in the second preseason game, or the third. However, a report on August 26 indicated that Bess is Brandon Weeden's "go-to" guy for third downs entering week one of regular season.
CLE: On August 10, Josh Gordon said he does not believe the patellar tendonitis in his knee that has bothered him during training camp will be an issue during the regular season. Gordon will miss the first two games of regular season due to a suspension. He led the team in receiving during the second preseason game with 3/72/0 to his credit.
CLE: David Nelson (knee injury) said he has been cleared to practice and he came off the Physically Unable to Perform list Friday, July 26. He finally resumed practicing with the team on August 18. Nelson didn't catch a ball in the third preseason game.
DAL: Though Miles Austin played in 16 games last season, he was hampered by hip and hamstring issues during the year. During 2013, Austin is reportedly focusing on training to enhance his chances of avoiding the same issues again: 'I'm definitely strengthening my hamstrings a lot more than I have been. Doing a different routine, a couple of extra exercises each day on our leg days' he reported on May 28, 2013. As of mid June, Austin reported his hamstrings felt fine - "I feel good now." he stated on June 17. Austin hinted on July 26 that this could be his last year as a Cowboy - but the comments didn't relate to an injury issue. He sat out the Hall of Fame game with the other starters, but that move was purely precautionary. Austin snagged 2/25/0 in the second preseason game, and had 4/59/1 in the Cowboy's fourth tilt of the season (during the third week of preseason - the Cowboys have an extra preseason game since they appeared in the Hall of Fame game).
DAL: Danny Coale (knee injury/surgery) did not participate in practice Monday, July 22. As of July 24 he was reportedly dealing with swelling and pain in the surgically repaired joint. He has yet to appear during the preseason.
DAL: As of August 3, Terrance Williams has been diagnosed with a concussion and he missed the Hall of Fame Game as a result. He caught one pass for five yards in the second preseason game, and one pass for 11 yards on August 24.
DEN: Wes Welker suffered a sprained right ankle in the preseason game Saturday, August 17. Reports out of Denver indicate that this is a relatively minor injury, and Welker is expected back in the lineup as of August 26 - Welker resumed practicing fully on August 26.
DET: Ryan Broyles suffered a torn right ACL on December 2, 2013, and underwent reconstructive knee surgery on December 7, 2012. As of May 29, 2013 the team stated that Broyles was making good progress in his rehabilitation, but the team hasn't set a return date for Broyles just yet. Broyles did participate in individual drills during the Lions late May OTAs. A report on the Lions' website (July 2) indicated that Broyles is "way ahead of schedule" in his return from the torn right ACL. Local reports on August 4, 2013 indicated that Broyles has been very impressive in training camp and that he appears fully recovered from his knee injuries/surgeries as of early August. On August 19 Broyles admitted he has "good days and bad days" as he continues his rehab program. He snagged 2/32/0 receiving in the third preseason game.
DET: Nate Burleson was placed on IR October 24, 2013 due to a broken leg. He was able to come to an agreement with the team on a restructured contract as of February 21, 2013, and he has been reported to be well ahead of the usual timetable for recovering from his injury. As of May 22, he was fully participating in OTAs, and is considered a favorite to be the #2 wide receiver across from Calvin Johnson during 2013. However, the fast healing Ryan Broyles may challenge Burleson for playing time in training camp. As of July 1, Burleson was expected to participate fully in training camp despite an admission from coach Jim Schwartz that Burleson wasn't yet 100% healed. Burleson played briefly vs. Cleveland and had two targets for zero receptions. He saw three targets for 1/6/0 during the third preseason game.
DET: Calvin Johnson has been resting a tweaked knee, and wasn't practicing as of August 20 - however, Johnson was expected to play in the third preseason "dress rehearsal" game on August 22, but was held out as he felt some soreness in the knee during pre-game warmups. The team expects him back in the lineup for the regular season opener.
GB: As of August 13, head coach Mike McCarthy admitted that Randall Cobb is playing through a biceps (tendon) injury that is affecting his play - the injury may be a factor during preseason. Coach McCarthy indicated that the injury may be a factor "for a while". Cobb sat out the first preseason game due to the injury. Cobb said on August 13 "I understand I have some limitations and have to be smart about it, but it's difficult." Cobb sat out the second preseason game too. After missing the third exhibition, Cobb returned to practices fully on August 25.
GB: Jordy Nelson suffered from a pulled hamstring and a sprained ankle during 2012, missing four games and playing in parts of others. However, he is reportedly healed up from those nagging injuries entering the summer practice sessions (as of May 30, 2013). Unfortunately, Nelson sat out of practice on Friday, August 2, due to a "banged up" knee. On August 6, it was reported by Adam Schefter that Nelson had knee surgery on Monday August 5, and Nelson is expected to be out 4-6 weeks as a result. On August 19 Nelson spoke about his rehabilitation: "Our main goal is San Fran [in week one of regular season]," Nelson said. "And that's just a goal. You never know what could happen. We'll just continue to go day by day." Nelson worked on the offensive scout team with QB Aaron Rodgers in practice Monday, August 26, and hauled in an 85-yard touchdown pass. He reportedly looks unencumbered while running, and Rodgers said Nelson is a 'fast healer.'
HOU: Texans head coach Gary Kubiak confirmed Saturday, August 17, that DeAndre Hopkins suffered a concussion in the preseason game against the Miami Dolphins. "He's fine," Kubiak said. "Obviously, we'll put him through the protocol." Fantasy owners should take note of the concussion because once a concussion is suffered, future re-injuries can occur more easily. Also the NFL has a high level of sensitivity to brain injuries these days and there are many examples of players missing multiple games if they suffer a repeat concussion in any given season. Hopkins missed the third preseason game and as of August 27 he is not cleared to return to action. The team hopes he'll be ready for the regular season opener, but Hopkins is having trouble recovering from this concussion - on August 28 it was revealed the Hopkins had been concussed in an automobile accident December 27, 2011.
HOU: DeVier Posey suffered a torn Achilles tendon during the Texans' playoff game in January - he had surgery to repair the injury on January 19, 2013. Head coach Gary Kubiak has spoken about Posey as being a possible contributor to the offense by mid-season - on June 4, Kubiak said "How early is the question. We’re making a decision on him at the end of camp because of the PUP and those type of things." Most observers expect Posey to start the season on the PUP list, making him undraftable in redraft fantasy leagues. On July 25 Posey was placed on the PUP/active list to open training camp.
IND: As of May 29, Darrius Heyward-Bey was sitting out of his new team's OTAs due to a sore hamstring - the team reportedly considered the injury minor, but was acting out of an abundance of caution by holding Heyward-Bey out. He is expected to be in the mix as the third wide receiver in Indianapolis this year, according to reports on June 16. Unfortunately, Heyward-Bey suffered a left knee sprain on August 4 that was reported on August 5 to be a MCL sprain that will cost him multiple weeks of practices. T.Y. Hilton moves into the starting spot across from Reggie Wayne as a result of this injury, and Hilton may keep the job even when Heyward-Bey is healthy enough to practice again. Heyward-Bey returned to practice on August 6 - he started in the preseason opener on August 11 but didn't record a catch. The latest report from practice on August 13 indicated he dropped at least five passes during the session. Heyward-Bey did lead the Colts in receiving in the second preseason game (4/42/0), and posted 3/33/0 receiving on three targets during the third preseason game.
EX-JAX: Free-agent WR Laurent Robinson (Jaguars) said on July 16 that he's symptom-free after his concussion-marred 2012. He was scheduled to work out for the New Orleans Saints on Monday, August 5.
JAX: Cecil Shorts was placed on IR for the final week of the 2012 season after suffering his second concussion in three weeks during December. Shorts was subsequently cleared for football activities on January 25, 2013. However, due to the league's heightened sensitivity to concussions (especially players with a history of concussions), the series of concussions Shorts sustained last December is an item to keep in mind when drafting this season. Shorts planned on working out with Larry Fitzgerald this summer according to reports on June 6, 2013. Shorts opened training camp by catching 10 passes and has looked good in sessions the first week - he looks ready to go as of early August. However, Shorts injured his calf early in camp and as of August 12 he is still sidelined due to the calf injury. He missed the preseason opener and the second preseason game as well. On August 16, Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley indicated Shorts would be able to play with his injured calf if it were the regular season. Note that Shorts has not completed a full practice since August 2, because of the injury, but his recent workouts have been described as "intense". Shorts did play in the third preseason game, with two targets for 1/20/0 receiving to his credit.
Ex-JAX Now-NYJ: Mohamed Massaquoi managed to play in just nine games last season, and he landed on IR December 24, 2012 due to a knee injury. He was subsequently signed by Jacksonville on April 5, 2013 - presumably his knee is back to 100% healthy entering preseason. However, it is worth remembering that Massaquoi hasn't played a full slate of 16 games per season over the past three years. He is reportedly (May 1) expected to start across from Cecil Shorts while Justin Blackmon serves his four-game suspension to start the season. However, during the first week of training camp Massaquoi has been up-and-down in consistency and he may be opening the door to other receivers to challenge him for keeping Blackmon's spot warm during the first four weeks of regular season. Massaquoi posted 2/15/0 receiving out of four targets during the second preseason game. Massaquoi was cut by the team on August 19 but was quickly signed by the Jets on August 22.
KC: Donnie Avery has missed most of the early June OTAs due to a high ankle sprain. He was expected to recover in time for training camp. Avery has struggled with drops in training camp and is listed as a backup on the first K.C. depth chart (August 4). Avery posted 1/6/0 receiving during the second preseason game. He saw nine targets for 6/54/0 receiving in the third preseason game.
Ex-KC, Now-SF: Jonathan Baldwin suffered a hand injury during practice Saturday, August 3, but was able to continue practicing. He was traded to San Francisco on August 19.
KC: Dexter McCluster suffered a hamstring injury during mid-May OTAs, but he did return to practice on May 30, 2013. As of early June, the hamstring issue appears to have been a mild injury. As of July 28, Kansas City's OC Doug Pederson is "determined" to find ways to get the footabll into McCluster's hands - he is good to go for the slate of preseason games. McCluster grabbed a pass for nine yards during the second preseason game. McCluster was ill for the third preseason game and missed out on the action.
MIA: Brian Hartline has a calf injury and missed practice on August 2 and the Hall of Fame Game August 4 as a result. Hartline saw two targets for zero receptions in the second preseason game. He snagged 4/40/0 on five targets during the third exhbition game.
MIA: Mike Wallace has battled a groin injury since training camp started, and he was held out of practice on August 2 and the Hall of Fame game August 4 as a result. He fully participated in practice on Wednesday, August 7, however. Wallace did play in the second preseason game, but he wasn't targeted during his time on the field. He posted 3/31/0 on four targets during the third preseason game.
MIN: Greg Childs was not cleared to practice as of June 16 as he continues to recover from patellar tendon injuries to both of his knees. His status for the start of training camp is unknown due to his lack of practicing during OTAs. Childs is on the PUP list as of training camp, and he may stay there once regular season rolls around. All signs continue to point to Childs remaining on PUP as of week three of the preseason.
NE: Despite missing 20 games for the Rams over the past two years due to injury (the most recent problem was a heel injury that limited Danny Amendola at the end of the 2012 season), Amendola was signed to a five year contract with $10 million guaranteed by the Patriots on March 15, 2013. We'll see if the $2.5 million in per-game roster bonuses contained in the deal help Amendola play through the nagging injuries that often sidelined him while in St. Louis. A report on June 11 indicated that Amendola was building good chemistry with Tom Brady during OTAs; so far, so good. On August 5, head coach Bill Belichick said Danny Amendola has "become a very dependable player for us." Amendola has stood out as the best receiver on the team since OTAs and that is continuing during training camp. However, the team revealed on August 20 that Amendola is dealing with a "minor" injury (unspecified) that is not related to his head. The Patriots are notorious for incomplete injury reports, so fantasy owners should take note that something isn't completely right with Amendola. He missed the third preseason game, but was reportedly practicing fully on August 26.
NE: Julian Edelman was reported in April, 2013 to be fully healed from a broken foot suffered during December 2012. However, he re-injured the foot on May 7, 2013 and has been wearing a walking boot since then. As of May 31, 2013, Edelman has a one-year, no-guaranteed-money contract for 2013 and he's missing time in OTAs due to his latest injury. Reports on June 24 indicated that Edelman has a good shot at the 53-man roster, but only if he can stay healthy during 2013. Edelman was cleared for practice August 1 and has been running with the first and second teams since August 2. Edelman grabbed 4/26/0 receiving during the second preseason game. He managed 3/18/0 receiving on three targets during the third preseason game.
Ex-NE: Donald Jones (signed by New England March 15, 2013) was placed on the non-football injury list by the Bills (his former team) on December 18, 2012. In the course of announcing they weren't going to re-sign him (February 7, 2013) the team said his illness was "a medical condition that he's had since college". Neither Jones nor the team have given specifics about what the medical condition he's struggled with actually is. He was waived by New England on July 19 and is still looking for another job.
NO: Marques Colston (foot injury) was removed from the physically unable to perform list and returned to practice for the first time since training camp began Monday, August 5. On August 20, Colston (foot) said he's not 100 percent healthy despite practicing for the second straight day Tuesday, August 20. "That's OK," Colston said. "I'm working towards it. I still have couple of weeks yet (until the regular-season opener vs. Atlanta). I'm still taking my time with it." Colston didn't play in the third preseason game.
NO: Joe Morgan was forced out of the Saints' lineup for the season on August 7 (he had corrective surgery on the seventh) after diagnosis confirmed a torn meniscus and partially torn ACL in his knee.
NO: Nick Toon was placed on IR August 31, 2012 due to a nagging foot injury that dated back to his days in college (two left foot surgeries have been performed to correct the injury). He is expected to fight for a backup roster spot in New Orleans this year, though - he said on April 12, 2013 that he is ready to go for 2013. As of June 9, reports out of New Orleans indicated that Toon looked comfortable in the team's offense despite sitting out last season. Toon has created a lot of buzz during training camp - on July 30 members of the local press stated that Toon has consistently stood out during practice sessions. He posted 1/56/0 receiving in the second preseason game, and had 1/11/0 receiving in the third.
NYG: Victor Cruz injured his heel during the second preseason game. On Tuesday, August 20 Cruz said he expects to be ready for regular season Week 1. He said he had an MRI that didn't reveal anything serious. On August 27, Cruz said he wants to return to the practice field Monday, September 2, and get a couple of days of practice in before being ready for the team’s week one game. “Absolutely. That’s definitely a date that, a target date for me," Cruz stated. "I want to come out get some days of practice in as well, once the doctors let me and the training staff lets me do so. We’re just taking it one day at a time."
NYG: Hakeem Nicks struggled to stay healthy during 2012 due to a left knee injury, which he finally had arthroscopically repaired in February of this year. "I think not having Hakeem 100 percent for most of the season, really the last 10 weeks, can hurt," Eli Manning said on January 4, 2013. "And he's out there playing hurt, and you love that toughness about it, that he wants to be out there. But it just made it tough when you're starting a receiver who's gotta win one-on-one matchups and your deep threat and your playmaker all of a sudden kinda isn’t making the deep plays and the big plays. It can be tough to adjust to that. And I think just our timing was off." Nicks has avoided participating in voluntary OTAs so far this year, so the stability of the knee is still to be determined. On June 11 he was partially participating in a mandatory OTA - he is reportedly expected to be limited until training camp kicks off. On June 27, Nicks said he will be ready for training camp. Nicks said he has been running full routes. Nicks was working with Eli Manning after the end of OTAs to help sharpen Nicks' game after he missed practice sessions earlier in the offseason. Early in camp Nicks strained his groin, leading to partial participation in the first week of training camp. On August 6, Nicks stated that his recent groin injury is 100% healed and that he anticipates practicing on August 7. However, Nicks was held out of the preseason opener - as of August 13 he is expected to be available for the second preseason contest on Sunday, August 18. Nicks saw five targets for 2/40/0 receiving during the game vs. Indianapolis. Nicks eked out 1/34/0 on six targets vs. the Jets in the third exhibition.
NYJ: Clyde Gates was knocked out of the final game of the 2012 season due to a head injury - he had missed time earlier in the year due to a concussion, so there is a troubling pattern emerging for this player, especially given the NFL's high level of sensitivity to concussions/post-concussion after-effects in recent years. Players who have suffered one concussion are often more susceptible to repeat injuries of this type. Reports on August 5 indicated that Gates has been "one of the stars" of training camp so far. He saw two targets but zero receptions in the second preseason game. He had one target for zero receptions at the Giants in week three of the preseason.
NYJ: Stephen Hill had surgery to repair a LCL injury to his right knee on December 21, 2012. He has participated in the recent OTAs during early June, but the teams' medical staff pulled him out on June 5, 2013. "I was (expected to be cleared by now)," Hill said Wednesday, June 5. 'I was going through some team workouts. At first it kind of swelled up on me a little bit and (the trainer) was like, "we don't need this to happen at all.'' The team hopes Hill can participate in the mid-June minicamp, but the knee is clearly not 100% as of June 5. Hill did participate in the mid-June minicamp, but struggled with drops and inconsistency. According to a report on July 12, Hill has not had any setbacks with a knee issue, but the team will likely ease Hill into training camp when practice begins by monitoring his snaps. A local report on July 28 indicated that Hill was having a "nice" training camp. He appears to be set for the slate of preseason games. Hill saw two targets for 1/11/0 receiving in the second preseason game, and followed up with 4/56/0 (four targets) in the third preseason game.
NYJ: Jets head coach Rex Ryan said on June 5, 2013 that there is a chance that Santonio Holmes (foot/Lisfranc injury) could start training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list. Holmes has had two surgeries on the Lisfranc injury since week four of the 2012 season, and he is looking iffy for at least part of training camp as of early June. On June 16, Holmes indicated he hopes to be ready for the start of training camp. However, speculation is that Holmes may not be ready for camp because he had not started running or cutting as of June 15. Holmes said on June 17 that his foot injury was diagnosed as a Grade 4 injury (the most serious kind), meaning a muscle tear and joint separation in his mid-foot. He had screws and a plate removed in a March surgical procedure, but he will have two screws in the foot permanently. On August 5, Holmes was reportedly expecting to miss at least the first four games of regular season - he may wind up on the PUP list and sit out the first six. Holmes is looking like a very risky fantasy wide receiver as of August 6, 2013. As of August 13, Holmes was reported to be striving to return to the field - but no timetable for his return was mentioned in the report. Holmes worked out with QB Geno Smith before the team's preseason game Saturday, August 17. Holmes appeared to be going at around three-quarters speed while running routes and sprints. Holmes participated in practice Monday, August 26 but his availability during regular season is still unclear.
OAK: Jacoby Ford had Lisfranc surgery on his left foot on September 12, 2012 and was subsequently placed on IR. He was out of his walking boot on December 4, 2012 and as of April 18, 2013 was reported to be 100% healed from his most recent Lisfranc fracture (Ford has suffered two such injuries so far in his short NFL career). On August 5, Ford was reported to be agile and impressive at training camp, but he missed the first two preseason games due to a strained knee. He is back at practices as of August 19. Ford had four targets but zero receptions in the third preseason game.
Ex-OAK: As of June 11, Joshua Cribbs was not participating in OTAs - he is recovering from a knee injury and may not be in practice sessions until training camp. As of August 3, Cribbs was participating in training camp sessions: "It feels great. I'm still knocking off the dust, running around trying to get 100 percent, but it feels great to just be out here with the guys, sweat with them, work out with them, knowing that I'm working out and earning my paycheck just like anybody else." Cribbs has not impressed as a returner since the preseason games started, and as of August 19 he may be on the roster bubble. Cribbs was subsequently cut and hasn't caught on with another team as of August 28.
OAK: Raiders head coach Dennis Allen said Rod Streater suffered a concussion during the team's preseason game Friday, August 23. Streater will have to pass the NFL concussion protocols before resuming football activities.
PHI: Arrelious Benn realizes he needs to stay healthier if he's going to have a chance at a roster spot with the Eagles - he stated on March 22: "I'll be honest with you, I don't like my career (to this point). I got to stay healthy. I haven't stayed healthy... And when I was healthy and out there, I made plays, and I was consistent." We'll see if the change of scenery helps Benn play more consistently during 2013. He landed on IR November 22, 2012 due to a MCL sprain that nagged him throughout the 2012 season and also a shoulder injury suffered early in the season. Benn was temporarily sidelined by the knee injury on July 31, but began to practice on August 5 - unfortunately, Benn was diagnosed with a torn left ACL on August 6 and was officially placed on IR August 7 - his season is over.
PHI: Jeremy Maclin has been lost for the season due to a torn right ACL - he was placed on IR July 31.
PIT: Plaxico Burress suffered a torn rotator cuff (in his shoulder) in practices and had surgery on Monday, August 12. He was placed on IR August 13, ending his NFL season before it began.
SD: Danario Alexander was diagnosed with a torn ACL on August 6 - his season is over. He was placed on IR August 17.
SD: Keenan Allen fully participated at the May 10, 2013 Chargers rookie minicamp - it appears that he is almost fully recovered from a left PCL tear suffered in October 2012. On April 26, 2013 Allen referred to the knee as "90%" healed - he appears to be on pace to fully participate in training camp later this summer. Allen is fully participating in the Chargers' training camp. With Danario Alexander out for the season and Malcom Floyd probably sidelined until regular season Allen has an opportunity to crack the starting lineup. However, on August 13 we learned that Allen left practice to get treatment on a posterior cruciate ligament injury that Allen suffered in 2012, according to head coach Mike McCoy. McCoy said the team wants to stay on top of the issue. Note that the PCL injury is the one dating back to October 2012. Allen did practice fully on August 14 and played in the second preseason game on August 15 (three targets for 2/27/0 receiving). He eked out 2/8/0 during the third exhibition.
SD: Vincent Brown missed the entire 2012 season due to a broken ankle suffered during training camp in August, 2012. As of May 20, 2013 Brown was declared 100% recovered from the broken ankle, and as of June 3, 2013 he was getting rotated in the Chargers' starting wide receiver rotation during organized team activities. It appears that the ankle injury is a thing of the past as of early June. Unfortunately, Brown suffered a hamstring injury early in training camp and as of August 4 he's missed six practice sessions - Brown is not expected to participate in the preseason opener. Brown caught one pass for nine yards on Thursday, August 15 during the preseason game against the Bears. He was back in action heading into the pivotal third preseason game, and handled one pass for nine yards in that contest.
SD: Malcom Floyd was carted off the field on Monday, August 12 due to a knee injury. A MRI reportedly showed no ACL tear, but as of August 13 Floyd was getting a second opinion on the knee diagnosis. In all events, Floyd is expected to miss (at least) all of preseason due to the knee injury. He returned to practices on August 26 and is expected to be ready for the first game of regular season.
SD: Chargers head coach Mike McCoy said on August 19 that Eddie Royal (bruised lung, concussion suffered last week in practice) was at the team's facility Monday, and that he is doing well. McCoy did not mention any timetable for Royal's return to action.
Ex-SEA: Early Doucet was cut on August 7 by the Seahawks after only being able to practice once due to an undisclosed injury. He doesn't look like a good late-round "flyer" pick as of mid-August.
SEA: Percy Harvin sat out organized team activities the first week of June due to what head coach Pete Carroll said was "a little bit of a hip flexor" issue that has been bothering the receiver. However, Carroll doesn't seem concerned, and said Harvin's fitness was good. "We're trying to get him back next week, so we rested him a couple days. He's done tons of work and looks great. We have no question what he can do and where he's fitting and he understands the offense," Carroll said. However, Harvin actually had been nursing a torn labrum in his hip, and he elected for a surgical repair on August 1, 2013. He's out indefinitely (the earliest Harvin can be expected to return is week 13 of 2013 - he may miss the whole season). Harvin is out for the foreseeable future, fantasy owners. He was officially placed on the PUP list as of August 27 and will miss at least the first six weeks of regular season.
SEA: Sidney Rice missed the first portion of training camp receiving treatment on his previously-injured knee in Switzerland. On August 2, Rice took part in some drills, but he did not take part in the team's scrimmage. Rice talked about the procedure he had done in Switzerland, which he said was similar to Platelet-rich Plasma treatment on his knee. As of August 20 the Seahawks indicated that they may keep Rice out of the entire slate of preseason games while his knee heals. He didn't appear in the third preseason game.
SF: Michael Crabtree tore his Achilles tendon during OTAs and is out for the 2013 season (he might return to action if the 49ers are in the playoffs again this winter, but for fantasy purposes Crabtree is out of commission for 2013). As of July 2, Crabtree was planning to return to exercises in the gym as the next step of his rehabilitation.
SF: Mario Manningham tore his left ACL and PCL during week 16 action last season, and was placed on IR Friday, December 28, 2012. He is expected to miss training camp this season, and may end up on PUP to begin regular season, though Manningham insists that he is targeting week one of regular season for his return. As of June 22, the team was expecting Manningham to be out until at least "late August". As of July 25, Manningham is still expected to be out of practices until late August. On Sunday, August 18 Mario Manningham was placed on the reserve/PUP list, meaning that he'll miss at least the first six games of the 2013 season. Manningham's value in redraft leagues has been severely compromised by the roster move.
SF: Rookie Quinton Patton is missing time in training camp due to a broken finger, and Ricardo Lockette and Kassim Osgood also missed practice Friday, AUgust 2 due to unspecified "minor injuries". On Sunday, August 4 three injured wide receivers back were on the practice field Sunday. A.J. Jenkins (hamstring injury dating back to July 30), Kassim Osgood (leg) and Kyle Williams (hamstring) all returned to the field. Patton shone in the third preseason game with six targets for 4/35/1 receiving - he may make the final roster.
SF: Kyle Williams (knee injury) is expected to receive medical clearance for the start of training camp, according to reports on June 20. However, as of August 3 Williams had participated in just one practice session - the 49ers made multiple signings of wide receivers on August 2 (Austin Collie, Lavelle Hawkins) as most of their wide receivers' corps is banged up entering the second week of training camp. Williams' most recent injury concern is a pulled hamstring. He returned to practice sessions on Sunday, August 4. As of August 16 reports from 49ers camp indicated that Williams is still the #2 wide receiver though he hasn't played during preseason - Williams also sat out of the third preseason game.
TB: Chris Owusu suffered a high ankle sprain of unspecified severity during the preseason opener on August 8. He missed the second preseason game due to pain in the sprained ankle, and didn't record a catch in the third exhibition.
TB: Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano said on August 3 that WR Mike Williams (hamstring strain) should be able to practice Monday, August 5. Williams wanted to practice Saturday, August 3, but was held out.He didn't record a target in the second preseason game, but the Tampa Bay first team only played one series. Williams had seven targets for 2/33/0 during the third exhibition game.
TEN: Kenny Britt struggled to produce during 2012 as he returned from a right ACL/MCL reconstruction, a follow-up procedure on that knee, and then a meniscus cartilage injury in his left knee. However, as of June 2, 2013 he has reportedly looked explosive during OTAs. On June 2, fellow wide receiver Kendall Wright said "Kenny is healthy and he’s doing good. He looks way different. He took his offseason serious and went and got his knees right." Reports on June 22 indicated that Britt participated in most of the organized team activities this offseason even though the team was willing to give him a few days to rest his knee. Britt told the trainers he was OK to practice even though he was offered a day off. As of August 3 Britt was off to a great start in training camp: "I'm feeling back to my old self, not weighing 230 that I was last year lifting weights," Britt said. "I'm out there running routes and making catches and making plays because I'm not worried about my injuries. I'm more focused on the moment of catching the ball." Britt missed practice on Sunday, August 11 due to a sore knee. He also missed sessions on August 12 and 13, despite asserting that his swollen right knee feels "great". Britt's ability to participate in the second preseason game is in doubt as of August 14. Britt had four targets but just 1/13/0 receiving vs. Cincinnati during the second preseason game. He saw four targets for 3/42/0 receiving in the third preseason contest. Britt will not play in the team’s final preseason game, according to head coach Mike Munchak on August 27.
TEN: Kevin Walter started training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list due to a back injury/a surgery to repair a disk in his back. Walter was expected to be out 4-5 weeks (basically all of training camp) as of July 24. He will be placed on PUP to begin regular season and miss the first six regular season games.
TEN: Nate Washington (ankle) suffered an ankle injury in the team's preseason game Saturday, August 24. He didn't suffer a major injury (reports indicate he rolled it but didn't do significant damage) - he's expected to practice as usual going forwards.
TEN: Kendall Wright limped off the field during the second preseason game, and then was carted to the locker room with a knee injury. Wright said he was pretty worried about the injury, but a MRI on Sunday, August 19, revealed no ligament tear, so while he’ll miss the rest of the preseason, he also has a shot of being healthy enough to play in Week 1.
WAS: Pierre Garcon elected NOT to have surgery on the torn ligaments during the offseason (there was no guarantee that the surgery would fix the problem), and as of June 6, 2013 Garcon is planning to wear special shoes designed to protect the affected portion of his foot. In short, Garcon is going to try and manage the pain of his injury. "I have to learn a lot about my foot and how I run and things like that with all these injuries, but it's getting better." On August 4, local reports indicated that Garcon is doing well in training camp, with no problems cropping up with the foot. He is said to be running well and catching just about every pass that comes his way. Garcon had one target for 1/3/0 during the second preseason game. He saw two targets for 1/7/1 during the third preseason game.
WAS: Josh Morgan had operations on both of his hands (to repair ligament issues) and a surgery on his right ankle (reportedly to clean up fragments left in the joint from a severe break suffered in October 2011) during the early months of 2013. Morgan said on May 26, 2013 that he felt the "best I've felt since about 2009." On August 1, Morgan was forced out of practice due to a hamstring strain. Morgan had one target for 1/19/0 during the second preseason game, and two targets for zero receptions in the third contest.
Ex-WAS: Donte' Stallworth has a sore hamstring and reportedly tried to play through it in the first preseason game. He didn't record a target during the second preseason game. He has since been cut by the Redskins.
Tight Ends
ARI: Rob Housler is expected to be questionable for the regular season opener September 8 against the St. Louis Rams after suffering a high ankle sprain in the team's preseason game against the San Diego Chargers. High ankle sprains are notoriously hard to rehabilitate so exactly when Housler will be back in action is unclear as of August 28.
BAL: As of June 13, Ed Dickson had not participated in practice the previous two days because of a groin injury. The injury is not considered serious, and Dickson is expected to be ready for training camp. Unfortunately, Dickson partially tore his hamstring during the first week of training camp and as of August 5, he's out of practices for a "week or so". Hamstring injuries are notorious for causing ongoing issues for NFL players - Dickson's recovery is very important to the Ravens, who've gone from good depth at the position before training camp to no depth now, given Dennis Pitta's season-ending hip injury and Dicksons' injured hamstring. "I can't make any predictions [about playing in week one of regular season], but I'm working hard to do that. It's one of those things where it was really sore and I tried to prevent it by doing other things," Dickson said of the injury on Sunday, August 11. Dickson started partially participating in practice on August 19 and stated at that time he's hopeful he'll be ready to go full speed by the first game of regular season. While Dickson was out injured, the Ravens signed Visanthe Shiancoe and Dallas Clark to bolster their TE roster. Shiancoe has been released, perhaps a sign that the Ravens are pleased with Dickson's rehab.
BAL: Dennis Pitta is out for the season after injuring his hip - the injury was severe enough that Pitta went into surgery shortly after he was hurt on July 28 (his hip was both fractured and dislocated).
BUF: Scott Chandler tore his ACL in week 16 of the 2012 season, and had reconstructive surgery on January 10, 2013. The injury was described as a "straight forward" ACL tear, and his rehabilitation has gone well. Chandler believes he'll be ready for the first week of training camp (which my be too optimistic) but all indications out of Buffalo are that he'll be ready for week one of regular season. On July 5, the Bills' website indicated that "all signs" point to Chandler being a full participant in training camp on the heels of his "remarkable recovery." We'll see how Chandler looks in the upcoming preseason games. As of July 31, Chandler was being held out of team drills, as he recovers from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Chandler was expected to play in the second preseason game, but he didn't record a target, and the same was true in the third exhibition.
CLE: Browns TE Gary Barnidge has a sprained AC joint in his shoulder and will miss a few days of practice as of August 16. He's questionable for the next preseason game. A MRI was scheduled for Friday, August 16 - the results of the MRI haven't been reported.
CLE: Jordan Cameron appeared to injure his left hamstring during practice Wednesday, June 5. He had his left leg wrapped after the injury occurred and sat out the rest of the practice. As of June 9, Cameron (hamstring, groin injuries) was expected to be ready for training camp but could be limited at the start of camp. The Browns are reportedly counting on Cameron to be their starting tight end. Cameron has been practicing in training camp and has reportedly seen passes "early and often" during sessions. He looks locked in as the starter in Cleveland. Cameron had three receptions for forty-two yards and two TDs in the second preseason game, and followed up with four targets for 2/7/0 in the third contest.
DEN: Joel Dreessen underwent arthroscopic surgery at the end of May to clean up his knee. Coach John Fox termed it "just a little knee procedure, scope, done, just to clean it up." Dreessen is expected to be ready for the start of training camp. However, the left knee didn't respond well to the clean-up and Dreessen will need a follow-up surgery on the joint - he is out for the rest of training camp as of August 4 and there is no clear time-table for his return to action at this time.
DEN: Jacob Tamme has missed sessions during the first week of training camp due to a quadriceps injury, opening the door for Julius Thomas to work as the Bronco's receiving tight end in training camp. Thomas led the team in receiving during the first preseason game, with four targets for 4/35/0 to his credit. Thomas also led the team in receiving at Seattle in the second preseason game, with 4/70/0 receiving. Tamme appeared in the third preseason game and posted four targets for 3/21/0 receiving.
DEN: Julius Thomas has struggled to get his right ankle healthy again since his April 2012 surgery to repair ligaments in the ankle. On May 30, 2013 head coach John Fox indicated that Joel Dreessen's recent arthroscopic procedure on his knee would allow Thomas a chance to get on the field and show what he could do - we'll see if Thomas' ankle will stand up to the stresses of practicing. As of July 6, reports are that Thomas has looked good in OTAs and seems to finally be past the ankle woes that plagued him early in his career. Reports on August 5 indicated that Thomas has been playing extensively in the receiving tight-end role during training camp. Thomas also led the team in receiving at Seattle in the second preseason game, with 4/70/0 receiving, and had six targets for 4/18/0 in the third.
DET: Brandon Pettigrew was hobbled by a sprained ankle during the final weeks of the 2012 season, but was active for the season finale after his ankle "responded well" to treatment. He's the lead tight end for the Lions entering the summer practice sessions. On July 30 head coach Jim Schwartz said: "Brandon looks as good as I've ever seen him physically,". Pettigrew saw four targets for 3/20/0 receiving in the second preseason game. He had four targets for 3/29/0 receiving in the third exhibition game.
IND: Dwayne Allen has an injured foot - he is expected to miss most or all of preseason as of August 11, but head coach Chuck Pagano indicated that Allen is expected back for week 1 of the regular season. On August 27 the team let it be known that both Allen and Coby Fleener are expected to be in the lineup for the first week of regular season.
IND: As of August 13, Coby Fleener has been diagnosed with a concussion and has begun the NFL concussion protocols. Fantasy owners should note that this is the second concussion of Fleener's NFL career - once a player has suffered a concussion, repeat injuries become more common. Fleener participated in practice on August 14 - he saw two targets for zero receptions at the Giants on Sunday, August 18. Fleener tweaked a knee during the game, but an MRI August 19 on Fleener's injured knee did not show any significant damage. Fleener could return to practice later this week if he does not have any setbacks with his knee or head injuries. On August 27 the team let it be known that both Dwayne Allen and Fleener are expected to be in the lineup for the first week of regular season.
JAX: Marcedes Lewis missed the second preseason game at NYJ on August 17 due to a strained calf suffered during warmups - his backup, Allen Reisner, caught the only TD of the game in place of Lewis. Reisner snagged one of the two TDs that Chad Henne threw in the third preseason game, with 1/8/1 on one target, while Lewis was sidelined again due to his ongoing issue with the sore calf.
KC: Tony Moeaki had arthroscopic surgery on a knee after the conclusion of the 2012 season, and he has been ruled out of OTAs this summer as a result. He is considered questionable for the start of training camp - Moeaki has a history of knee troubles and this is just the most recent of multiple knee surgeries (he's also had his ACL reconstructed during his NFL career). The Chiefs signed Anthony Fasano to a four year, $16 million deal during free agency (a signal that Moeaki's knee is a real concern for the team). As of May 25, Moeaki was considered "questionable" for training camp. On July 23, Moeaki was medically cleared to participate in training camp. He had one catch for two yards in the second preseason game on August 16. Unfortunately, Moeaki hurt his shoulder in the third preseason game (fractured the shoulder) - he is out indefinitely while his shoulder mends.
MIA: Dustin Keller suffered a gruesome knee injury in the second preseason game, and reports on Sunday, August 18 indicated that he may face a career-ending situation due to nerve damage in the knee. Keller is certainly out for the 2013 campaign in any case. A new report on August 22 indicated that Keller actually avoided nerve damage so he may be able to return to football next year.
NE: Jake Ballard is about 16 months removed from his ACL injury/surgery and as of May 31 he was reported to be near 100% healthy. Reports on June 20 reiterated that Ballard is near 100% recovered from his knee injury. However, since the opening of training camp, Ballard has not impressed observers. He was reportedly still having trouble with the knee as of August 5, and speculation is that Ballard may be cut before training camp is over. He continues to struggle with the knee as of the second week of training camp - indications are that Ballard is being overtaken by Zach Sudfield on the depth chart and Ballard is now considered to be on the roster bubble. Reports on August 9 reiterated that Ballard is looking stiff and uncomfortable during practices. As of August 14 Ballard was on the sidelines while Sudfield worked with first team - Ballard is contesting the #3 tight end slot with Daniel Fells as of August 14.
NE: Rob Gronkowski is recovering from forearm surgery and had back surgery on June 18 - he is looking iffy for training camp, and perhaps even the start of regular season. There is a lot of uncertainty about Gronkowski's status for 2013 entering training camp. He is expected to start training camp on PUP but may come off at any point during preseason. As of July 9, Gronkowski has resumed light workouts and has made significant progress in his rehabilitation, which is a good sign for his availability for regular season, but Gronkowski hadn't begun running yet as of July 11. So far during training camp, Gronkowski has attended sessions but been in street clothes (he was placed on PUP to start training camp on July 23) - some local reports speculate (repeat, speculate) that he may open the season on the PUP list but the Patriots' staff is being very close-mouthed about Gronkowski's status. As of early August there is no definitive information about when Gronkowski may return to action. Reports on August 19 indicated that it is "not realistic" to expect Gronkowski to be ready for week one - there is even some concern that he may start the season on the PUP list (and therefore miss the first six games). Tread carefully here fantasy owners. As of August 26 Gronkowski was participating in individual drills, and local reports on August 27 indicated that he may be ready to return to action by the end of September.
Ex-NE: Aaron Hernandez has been cut from the Patriots and is currently in jail facing multiple felony charges, including first degree murder.
NO: Jimmy Graham underwent wrist surgery in January, 2013. He is reportedly fully recovered from the procedure, though - as of June 4, he was participating fully in OTAs and looks set to go for training camp. On June 9, Graham stated that the wrist feels like it is back to 100 percent after the injury lingered for most of the 2012 season. He was reportedly wearing a small brace on his wrist during offseason practices to make sure nothing happened. On July 29 Graham was reported to be in top condition for the start of training camp - he appears to be 100% healthy as of early August. Graham saw four targets for 2/22/0 receiving during the second preseason game. He saw three targets for 1/10/0 during the third preseason game.
OAK: Raiders head coach Dennis Allen said August 19 that David Ausberry (shoulder injury) likely will not play again before the start of the regular season. He was hurt on August 17 and at that time coach Allen indicated that the injury could be "significant". A report on August 25 indicated that the team was "hopeful" that Ausberry would return in time for the first game of regular season.
PIT: Heath Miller tore his right ACL, PCL, and MCL December 23, 2012 and had reconstructive surgery on December 27, 2012. As of May 22, 2013 Miller didn't have a timetable for his return, but he stated on May 22 that there was a chance he'd be ready for week 1 of the 2013 season. "I’m running now. I'm doing everything. I'm not at full speed, but I've been able to do everything that they’ve asked me to do. So, I'm pleased and encouraged. It's been a long process... But I'm going to keep taking it one day at a time and get better every day." As of June 17, Miller was considered out indefinitely following knee surgery, and there is reportedly a strong chance he will not be ready for the start of the regular season. As of August 2, Miller is expected to start the season the PUP list, which means he'll miss at least the first six weeks of regular season. However, a contrary report on August 20 indicated that Miller is likely to return to practice before the team opens up the season. It is possible Miller could return to game action in the early part of the season, according to the latest news on Miller. There is a good deal of uncertainty about exactly how healthy Miller is heading into the third preseason game. A report on August 27 indicated that the team was going to take Miller off the PUP list before Saturday, August 31 so that Miller won't have to sit out the first six games of regular season - this seems to indicate that Miller is getting close to returning to action as of late August.
PIT: Matt Spaeth had arthroscopic knee surgery on January 11, 2013. The procedure was considered minor, and Pittsburgh signed him to a two-year contract on March 15, 2013 - he is expected to be ready for the first day of training camp. As of August 2, Spaeth is considered the starting tight end for the Steelers as Heath Miller is expected to open regular season on the PUP list. However, Spaeth suffered a Lisfranc injury and had surgery around August 11 - he is expected to be out 8-10 weeks as he recovers from the latest injury. On August 13, the team had not yet decided if Spaeth would be placed on IR outright or on IR/designated to return - in either case he won't help fantasy owners for at least the first half of the NFL season (and would likely be marginal if he returns for the second half of 2013).
SEA: Zach Miller suffered a torn plantar fascia in the January 13, 2013 divisional round playoff loss to the Falcons. He should recover from the injury in time for training camp, but as we've seen with Antonio Gates and Pierre Garcon during recent years, foot injuries can become long-term issues. Fantasy owners should monitor Miller's participation (or lack thereof) in the summer practice sessions before training camp. Miller missed the team's mid-June OTAs due to the foot injury. Miller opened training camp on the PUP list and as of August 4 the team is "hopeful" that Miller will be available to play in the third preseason game on August 23, 2013 at Green Bay. Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said on August 16 that Miller (foot) will be activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list on Friday - Miller was activated and continues his rehab as of August 28.
STL: Lance Kendricks (knee surgery) was placed on the Physically-Unable-to-Perform (PUP) list Monday, July 22. He missed the team's organized team activities (OTAs) this spring after having his knee scoped during the offseason. Kendricks was activated from PUP on August 13. Kendricks took part in a full practice session Monday, August 26, and he participated in his first 11-on-11 drills since offseason knee surgery. "I feel really good out there," Kendricks said. "Just trying to knock the rust off and trying to get back to playing shape."
TB: Luke Stocker (placed on PUP July 24) is making progress with his calf injury, according to head coach Greg Schiano on August 5. “Progress is a good way to put it,” Schiano said. “He’s not ready to go, but he was taken off PUP because he was going to do some things with pads on, which is the rule. He’s moving in the right direction.” He has yet to catch a pass in preseason.
TEN: Delanie Walker missed some OTA practices in early June due to a sore knee, but he received good news from the MRI that was performed on the knee - there is no serious concern with the knee and he should be able to participate in upcoming summer practice sessions. Walker participated in organized team activities Monday, June 10. As of July 31, Walker was on the PUP list (he had the bothersome knee operated on arthroscopically) and he didn't anticpate being activated until the third week of preseason practices/the third preseason game. Walker has begun individual workouts as of August 12, but the team anticipates he'll need a few weeks to get back into "football shape" after being out for two months of work.
TEN: Taylor Thompson was unable to practice Sunday, August 11, as he nurses a sprained AC joint in his shoulder. However, he was reportedly hopeful of playing in the preseason game Saturday, August 17, against the Cincinnati Bengals. He didn't record a catch during the game, though. Thompson saw three targets for 2/21/0 receiving in the third preseason contest.
WAS: Fred Davis landed on IR October 22, 2012 due to a torn Achilles tendon. He had corrective surgery shortly thereafter - Davis was re-signed by the Redskins on March 29, 2013. He has partially participated in late May OTAs, and stated at the time he was 90% recovered from the injury. Davis is expected to be ready for training camp, though head coach Mike Shanahan is electing to hold Davis out of early June OTAs. Davis is active in training camp and as of August 1 was reportedly running routes without any limitations. He appears to be healthy entering the 2013 slate of preseason games. He played in the second preseason game (one target for 1/7/0 receiving vs. Pittsburgh), and added one target for 1/31/0 receiving in the third exhibition game.
Place Kickers
Ex-BUF, Now-TB: Rian Lindell suffered a shoulder injury in November 2012, and was placed on IR December 8, 2012. He was re-signed by the team February 3, 2013, but then the team drafted Dustin Hopkins during the annual NFL draft. Lindell will face a camp battle with Hopkins in August. He was cut by Buffalo but signed by Tampa Bay on August 20.
DET: David Akers hasn't kicked much at OTAs as of May 30 and isn't at 100% healthy as of early June. He's had a series of groin/hernia surgeries dating back to 2012, and is trying to avoid aggravating his groin again this year after his most recent groin surgery in March of this year. Akers kicked 2/2 field goals in the first Detroit preseason game, and was 1/1 for 48 yards in the second preseason game. He's competing against Harvard Rugland to retain the Detroit kicking job.
HOU: Randy Bullock missed his entire rookie season due to a groin tear (he landed on IR August 26, 2012). As of May 15, Bullock stated "I feel great. I've been cleared... (I'm) working out and doing everything normal. It feels good." Bullock is handling all the kicking duties for the Texans during preseason.
Ex-MIA Ex-AZ Now-NYJ: Dan Carpenter was placed on IR December 21, 2012 due to a groin injury, marking the second straight season he's been forced out due to a groin injury. The Dolphins drafted Caleb Sturgis in the fifth round of the 2013 draft, and he is reported to be the heavy favorite to win the kicking job in training camp. Sturgis won and Carpenter was released - he says he has work waiting for him but his wife is overdue with their first baby so he wasn't taking a new job as of August 17. On August 21 he signed a one-year deal to kick for the Cardinals, bringing competition against Jay Feely in the desert. He was released on August 25 and then signed by the Jets on August 27 - Carpenter now looks to beat out Nick Folk for the kicking job with the Jets.
TB: Buccaneers PK Connor Barth (Achilles') is out with a torn Achilles' as of July 18. He's likely to miss the entire season. He'll be placed on the non-football injury list. Lawrence Tynes was signed to replace Barth for 2013. However, as of training camp Tynes – who replaced Connor Barth after his Achilles tear – is nursing a toe injury. Tynes has been diagnosed with MRSA, which is a serious staph infection that is resistant to penicillin-type treatment. Tynes had surgery as of August 23 on his infected toe - Tynes' season may be in doubt as of late August. Rookie Derek Dimke played in the preseason opener and kicked 3/3 field goals with a long of 45 yards and also went 1/1 on extra points, for a total of 10 points to his credit. "I think when we started this competition, Tynes was in front because he was the veteran," coach Greg Schiano said on August 5. "But I've never coached either one of them. Where are we today? This isn’t a book about what's happened in the past. It's about the Bucs in 2013. The competition is good, but the injury has definitely set Lawrence back. We have to get him feeling good before we can make a fair judgment." Now the Buccaneers have signed Rian Lindell as well, so the picture at PK in Tampa Bay is confused, at best, as of August 28.
