Buy Low
Giovani Bernard, RB, CIN - It doesn’t take long for perception in a backfield to tilt the scales so that the once overvalued back becomes the undervalued player. Bernard will likely yield to Jeremy Hill in an arrangement that resembles the Bell/Bush split from Detroit last year, but that means a long future of being a PPR RB2 with weekly RB1 upside. He might be cheaper than you think in a trade.
Isaiah Crowell, RB, CLE - Around Footballguys parts, Crowell has been highly regarded for a long time, mostly because of Matt Waldman. However, those not familiar with the idea that Crowell was the most talented back in the 2014 class might see the undrafted rookie as a “sell high” in dynasty leagues.
Cody Latimer, WR, DEN - Latimer is going to get on the field very soon, possibly even this weekend. Pick him up in any redraft leagues and make one last flurry of offers to his owner in dynasty leagues.
Jonas Gray, RB, NE - Gray was probably overvalued in dynasty leagues and at value or slightly overvalued in redraft before LeGarrette Blount was signed by New England this week, and he has swung back to undervalued. I would be fine with starting him as an RB2 in good matchups, and he still has a shot have this role all of next year too - and longer if he continues to impress.
Percy Harvin, WR, NYJ - Harvin’s career has been through the meat grinder this year, but he remains a dynamic talent and the verge of his peak years. He is a good investment at the current price in dynasty, and maybe even in redraft leagues if the will is there to use him in New York.
Chris Ivory, RB, NYJ - Remember me? Ivory has been dealing with a wishy-washy staff that wanted to appease Chris Johnson and a crumbling offense - if not crumbling franchise - but he is running his ass off with his best years likely ahead, turning 27 this offseason. He is a lot cheaper than a running back of his caliber should be in dynasty leagues.
Keenan Allen, WR, SD - Allen didn’t flourish statistically with more competition for targets this year and he was banged up early in the season, but he hasn’t really backslid or stalled out in his development. He might not ever be a fantasy WR1, but he is going to be a very productive receiver for a long time with room to grow. If his owner has cooled on him, Allen might be available for a lot less than you’d expect.
Pierre Garcon, WR, WAS - Garcon didn’t suddenly lose his ability. I can’t buy that he is going to be irrelevant in fantasy leagues from now on. His name value might have kept his price mostly intact in dynasty leagues, but it doesn’t hurt to ask.
Kendall Wright, WR, TEN - Wright is starting to look more dynamic with Zach Mettenberger in there, and there are signs of life in the pass offense. He is just getting into what should be his best years, and despite mostly disappointing in his early season, Wright doesn’t look like a bust. He’ll produce more with better surroundings, and it seems like they can’t get much worse.
Odell Beckham, WR, NYG - This might seem a bit absurd, but I continue to encounter folks that put Beckham in the second tier of rookie WRs from this class and otherwise haven’t been as bowled over by him as the rest of us. If you can turn a Brandin Cooks or Jordan Matthews in Odell Beckham, or otherwise part with anything but top 20-25 overall type names to get him - 2015 first(s) too - get Beckham before everyone accepts that he is one of the elite.
Sell High
Terrance West, RB, CLE - Don’t sell West just because, but I believe he will continue to pale in comparison to Crowell and projects as NFL depth, but not a starter. The release of Ben Tate could make him a more coveted back who can bring some nice commodities in return.
Ryan Mallett, QB, HOU - Mallett looks good, and it’s not like he is red hot fantasy commodity, but quarterbacks are so replaceable in fantasy leagues that I wouldn’t hesitate to flip him for a later pick or a prospect at another position.
Trent Richardson, RB, IND - Richardson has the backfield pretty much all to himself in Indianapolis now, but he’s sure to disappoint. A team in need could pony up a good pick or prospect to get Richardson for the stretch run with hopes of the former bust asserting himself for the future, too. History tells us that is unlikely to happen.
Coby Fleener, TE, IND - Like Richardson, Fleener’s temporary opportunity opens up a temporary sell high window. Jump through it.
Lamar Miller, RB, MIA - Miller has an electric burst at times, but it appears from his usage and appearance on the injury report that he will probably never be a true lead back, and his fantasy value will flounder in the RB2/Flex range for the better part of his career. His sell high moment might have come and gone already, but be open to dealing him as part of a package to get a key piece for the stretch run.
Jeremy Maclin, WR, PHI - If you aren’t a contender, try to offload Maclin for market value in dynasty leagues. Next year brings free agency, and the Eagles seem to have a grasp on the fungible nature of wide receivers in their system if they have to overpay them to keep them. If Maclin draws a big deal on the free agent market next year, he’ll walk and possibly face an Eric Decker-esque loss of value.
Mike Evans, WR, TB - Evans is absolutely a cornerstone of dynasty teams and should be basically untouchable, but if someone does come calling and they are offering a lateral move to an established elite WR like Julio Jones or Dez Bryant, make the move. Don’t laugh, it has been known to happen
