Welcome to the second season of these dynasty player value charts at Footballguys. If you followed this column last year, you'll notice some changes to the format this year. Before we got into the charts I wanted to spend a brief moment talking about what the changes are and why they were implemented.
The first set of changes are all happening under the hood, as I've updated the algorithms used to improve cross-positional comparisons. The 2015 player values were built using fantasy data from a broad cross-section of leagues during the 2014 season. The problem is that every season is somewhat unique. Last year, for instance, was a terrible year for running back injuries. It also featured a lot of upheaval among early-round quarterbacks. 2014, on the other hand, was a very stable year for quarterbacks and tight ends.
Over the offseason I had a chance to extend my research, collecting data from leagues in 2015 and even a few in 2013. Incorporating this allows me to base player values on a broader range of outcomes, and does a lot to solve one of the biggest issues with last year's charts, in my opinion— just how much higher quarterbacks and tight ends wound up ranking compared to dynasty consensus.
The next change is purely cosmetic. Last year, my charts didn't have any scale, the value outputs simply were what they were. A 600 in one chart might be comparable to a 900 in another chart. The numbers were confusing and all over the place. This year, I've indexed all player value on a 100-point scale relative to the most valuable player in that particular format. If someone scores a 32, for instance, that means they are 32% as valuable as the top player in the format.
The final change will perhaps be the most controversial. Last year, I provided value charts for various different mindsets— contenders, rebuilders, balanced owners. I also provided in each chart several different measures of value— value over baseline, value over an average starter, and a combination of the two.
By doing this, I felt like I was giving the process a veneer of objectivity. But this is not at its heart an objective process. I have tried to take a rigorous and quantifiable approach to valuing players, but the end result is still the output of a wide variety of assumptions— Bob Henry's assumptions about player performance this year, and my own assumptions about how that projection relates to their true skill level.
Further, while I ultimately provided 18 different value comparisons, I myself did not feel like many of those comparisons were the best approach. The contender values I provided I personally felt were too short-sighted. The rebuilder values I provided were too far-sighted. It would be entirely possible for someone, using the subjective tools that I created to best reflect my own beliefs, could draw conclusions that I did not think should be drawn.
More than that, I think the result was again rather confusing. I had many people contact me asking me which values they should be using. I had people asking how to compare across charts, such as when one person was rebuilding and the other was contending. The point of a value chart is to make comparisons easier, not harder.
To that end, I've decided this year to eliminate the 18 different value measures and just provide two— one for PPR and one for standard. These are the player valuations that I officially endorse and recommend you use for best results. You can read more on how these values were compiled right here.
As always, thank you to everyone who has contacted me via email at Harstad@Footballguys.com or via twitter at @AdamHarstad. Your input and feedback has helped improve and refine these charts, and any further input and feedback is always appreciated. I'm always striving to make something that is maximally useful.
I'll write more about the process at arriving at these new weights and numbers through the year, but there's been enough delay already. Without further ado, here are the new and improved, easier-to-use, easier-to-understand dynasty value charts.
