As hoped, nearly every injured veteran who was missing preseason practice returned to the field last week.
While we may see some of these players listed as limited in practice mid-week, all of the following critical names are expected to play in Week 1.

Follow Up Appointments
Cam Newton | Left foot sprain | Preseason Week 3 | Day-to-Day | Probable Week 1
Newton participated in individual drills through the weekend and reportedly throwing the ball without any limitation. Ron Rivera told reporters there was "no doubt in my mind" Newton would play this week. Rivera's optimism would also indicate Newton will not be limited and the Panthers will have the full offensive playbook at their disposal. It won't be surprising to see Newton listed as a limited practice participant on Wednesday but expect a full late week practice and probable gameday listing.
Amari Cooper | Plantar fasciitis | Early preseason | Day-to-Day | Probable Week 1
Cooper is expected to return to practice this week after rehabbing a heel injury for weeks. If Cooper's injury involved the plantar fascia and isn't fully healed, it could linger and flare up during the regular season. Cooper has said he's played through a similar condition in the past and does not expect to be limited. A full week of practice would be reassuring here.
***Keke Coutee's Week 1 status remains confusing. Bill O'Brien told reporters early last week Coutee was trending toward playing but every report since has been pessimistic. Don't expect Coutee to have a full workload if he's active this week.
***Jerick McKinnon needs an additional surgical procedure on his injured knee. Multiple episodes of recurrent inflammation are suggestive of a cartilage and/or meniscus lesion and general manager John Lynch told reporters eight weeks was not enough for McKinnon to recover after surgery. McKinnon is ineligible to return this season.
***Theo Riddick, Jake Butt, Derwin James, and Robert Alford are starting the season on injured reserve. All are eligible to return this season.
***Bryce Love (NFI), Cameron Meredith (PUP), Russell Okung (NFI), Jonah Williams (PUP), Jason Pierre-Paul (NFI), Jalen Mills (PUP), and Darqueze Dennard (PUP) will miss a minimum of six weeks and are first eligible to return in Week 7.

DECIPHERING THE ALPHABET SOUP OF INJURY LISTS
Players not ready for camp practices are placed on one of two lists – Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) or Non-Football Injury/Illness (NFI).
Physically Unable to Perform (PUP)
Active/PUP – Preseason only list. Once a player participates in any part of a scheduled training camp practice, they are ineligible for this list. Players can be activated from this list at any time. This list is commonly used for veterans still recovering from injury and those who fail conditioning tests before camp begins.
Reserve/PUP – Regular season only list. Players still on Active/PUP at the end of camp are eligible to move to Reserve/PUP. Players cannot practice with the team until after Week 6. Teams then have six weeks to evaluate the player before moving to the active roster or to season-ending injured reserve.
Non-Football Injury / Illness (NFI)
Active/NFI – Preseason only list. Once a player participates in any part of a scheduled training camp practice, they are ineligible for this list. Players can be activated from this list at any time. Only veterans with a non-football related injury or rookies injured before the NFL draft are eligible for this list.
Reserve/NFI – Regular season only list. Players converted from the Active/NFI list to the Reserve/NFI list are out for the entire season.
Injured Reserve – Return Designation
Each NFL team can return two players to the active roster from injured reserve. Teams are not forced to designate this player at the time of the move to injured reserve. Players designated to return can begin practicing six weeks after being placed on injured reserve and are eligible to return to the active roster eight weeks after being placed on injured reserve. This rule allows a team to continually evaluate the rehab and recovery of their injured players and provides roster flexibility should teams have multiple key injuries early in the season.
