Gameday Injury Expectations: Week 6

What to expect from this week's injured offensive players

UNDERSTANDING THE NFL'S INJURY REPORT

The injury report released by the NFL is actually two reports. The first is the Practice Participation report, which lists which injured players were able to practice and how much. It also includes players who rested or missed practice for non-injury related reasons. The second is the Game Status Report, which gives the probability a player will play, i.e. Questionable, Doubtful, Out. The Practice Participation Report is released every day of the week (Monday through Saturday). The Game Status Report is released with the Friday participation report (Wednesday for Thursday games, Saturday for Monday games).

The NFL has made the practice participation report more complicated this season. Teams are no longer allowed to declare players "probable" to play. The current designations are Questionable (Uncertain to Play), Doubtful (Unlikely to Play), and Out. In our Monday Injury Rounds column, we'll often review how these changes are impacting the injury reports.

In this feature, I'll include the Game Status Listing, my expectation of their likelihood to play, and the player's practice participation throughout the week.

Here's the Key:

PLAYER | INJURY | GAME STATUS LISTING | FOOTBALLGUYS EXPECTATION

Practice Participation Listing by Day

I'll also include a table at the bottom of the article for easy reference.

Here's the latest on every relevant injured offensive player on the practice participation and game status report this week:

QUARTERBACK

CAM NEWTON | CONCUSSION | Questionable | Expected to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - Limited | Thurs - Full | Fri - Full

Newton is listed questionable on the game status report but all indications are he'll return to play this weekend. Newton's consecutive full practices are reassuring; the questionable tag likely means Newton had yet to see an independent neurologist to receive formal clearance to play. Ron Rivera has said the team will not limit Newton's usage in any way. Whether Newton himself will play more cautiously after multiple helmet-to-helmet hits this season remains to be seen.

Carson Palmer | Concussion | Not Listed | Expected to Play

Practice Participation: Thurs - Full | Fri - Full | Sat - Full

Palmer fully practiced through Friday and is expected to fully practice Saturday and receive clearance to play. I'll update this weekend if any unexpected doubts are raised.

Cody Kessler | Chest / Rib | Not Listed | Expected to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - Limited | Thurs - Full | Fri - Full

Kessler is now dealing with a shoulder separation (which did not keep him from playing last week) and injuries to the front of his chest and ribs. He fully practiced on Thursday and Friday and was named the starter, with Josh McCown ruled out. Like last week, Kessler will be at risk of an in-game aggravation if he takes another hit to the injured area.

Others of note: Andrew Luck (shoulder) was back on the injury report midweek with a maintenance day but is not listed on the game status report and will play. Russell Wilson (knee/ankle) fully practiced this week coming out of the bye and his ankle and knee sprains are only minor concerns.

Running Back

Eddie Lacy | Ankle | Questionable | Likely Active / ? Limited

Practice Participation: Wed - Limited | Thurs - Limited | Fri - Limited

James Starks | Knee | Declared Out | Likely Inactive

Practice Participation: Wed - DNP | Thurs - DNP | Fri - DNP

The official line from the Packers is that both Lacy and Starks will be re-evaluated on Saturday. But the tone of Mike McCarthy's comments suggest Lacy is much more likely to be active and play than Starks. Lacy had a full week of limited practice and has made progress while receiving treatment for a low grade high ankle sprain. Lacy wouldn't commit to being ready to play but it's always a positive sign when a player with a high ankle injury is able to do any practice work on Wednesday. While Lacy is likely to be limited in usage this week, I expect him to play. Starks has a knee injury of unknown severity and did not practice on Wednesday. Sadly, he then missed late week practices to attend his grandmother's funeral. While Starks knows the offense and wouldn't necessarily need to practice to play, it's hard to see the conservative Packers' medical staff clearing him without treatment or practice all week.

Saturday Night Update: Starks was downgraded to out on Saturday and Rob Demovsky is reporting the injury is a meniscus tear. Those often require surgery -- either a removal of the torn fragment (3-6 weeks) or repair of the tissue (4-6 months). More on Starks on Monday. The Packers elected not to promote a running back from the practice squad but it's not assured that Lacy will see a full workload. Randall Cobb and Ty Montgomery could again see reps out of the backfield.

Jonathan Stewart | Hamstring | Questionable | Expected to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - Limited | Thurs - Full | Fri - Full

The Panthers expected to get Stewart back this week and the nearly full week of practice is a sign he's near full strength. Conditioning may be an issue and Stewart is still within the window of concern for aggravation but Stewart is likely to play and see his usual workload.

Arian Foster | Hamstring | Questionable | Game-time Decision

Practice Participation: Wed - Limited | Thurs - Limited | Fri - Limited

Foster has reconditioned through two consecutive weeks of limited practices. Beat writers thought he looked fully recovered last week and reported the team likely held him out last week to be cautious. Foster's history of aggravated muscle strains suggests that to be a good idea. Unfortunately, caution isn't always successful with Foster. He's expected to return to play this week, but an aggravation is a risk on every play.

Sunday Morning Update: Arian Foster is a game-time decision per Ian Rapoport this morning. Foster will have to prove he's ready during warmups.

Rashad Jennings | Thumb | Questionable | Expected to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - Limited | Thurs - Limited | Fri - Limited

I have been watching for full practice participation as a trigger the Giants were ready to return Jennings to play. This week's practice participation and game status report looks just like the last three -- with consecutive limited practices and a questionable tag. However, Jennings says he's ready to return and every beat writer fully expects him to play. That's enough for me to change my expectation to "Expected to Play" but there's still a nagging doubt about Jennings' in-game usage and availability.

Sunday Morning Update: Ian Rapoport tweeted the Giants plan to have Jennings active today but will have one final pregame check to be certain.

Theo Riddick | Ankle | Declared Out

Practice Participation: Wed - DNP | Thurs - DNP | Fri - DNP

Dwayne Washington | Ankle | Questionable | Expected to Play | Likely Limited

Practice Participation: Wed - DNP | Thurs - DNP | Fri - Limited

Riddick was ruled out on Friday with a knee injury that held him out of practice all week. I didn't see an injury last week and the team has not commented on Riddick's status this week. I'll hopefully have a return to play projection in Monday's followup article. Beat writers are tentatively expecting Washington to play. But that may be due to depth chart concerns (Zach Zenner didn't impress last week, Justin Forsett has had little time to learn the offense) than a belief that Washington is healthy. I'm still worried about Washington's mechanism of injury -- which wasn't a minor low ankle sprain -- and he's managed just the limited Friday practice in two weeks. If Washington is active, I don't believe he'll be full strength and it would be a surprise to see him healthy enough to get more than ten touches.

Others of note: LeGarrette Blount (hip), Mark Ingram (illness), Ryan Mathews (illness), Matt Forte (knee), Jeremy Hill (chest), and Frank Gore (not injury related) are all expected to play and see their usual role in their team's offenses. Hill is fighting a shoulder sprain and chest contusion and carries the highest risk of limited usage or aggravation of the group. Latavius Murray (toe), Jeremy Langford (ankle), and Thomas Rawls (fibula) have all been declared out. I'll update the return to play projection for these three running backs on Monday.

Wide Receiver

Dez Bryant | Knee | Questionable | Likely Inactive

Practice Participation: Wed - Limited | Thurs - Limited | Fri - Limited

Bryant was cleared to do much more in practice this week. He was running routes in pads and looked comfortable making cuts and jumping to catch passes. However, individual drills are not done at game speed and Bryant was not cleared for team drills or contact this week. Bryant did nothing in practice the week following his injury, has yet to be cleared for team drills/contact in the two following weeks, and has already missed two games with this injury. The level of caution here is notable and suggests the team has no plans to activate Bryant and have him run routes as a decoy. The Cowboys have a bye next week. Resting Bryant this week gives the team two additional weeks to aggressively rehab an injury that would cost him another month or more if aggravated. I believe the team wanted to increase Bryant's work this week but never intended to activate him to play. Multiple beat writers tweeted similar thoughts on Friday. There's an outside chance Bryant convinces the medical staff he's able to play this weekend but I believe he's much closer to doubtful than probable. More this weekend when the local and national media updates this situation.

Sunday Morning Update: Ian Rapoport tweets Bryant will warm up today but is considered a "longshot" to play.

Julio Jones | Knee | Not Listed | Expected to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - DNP | Thurs - Limited | Fri - Full

Jones continues to deal with general lower body soreness. He's been listed with ankle, calf, and knee injuries through five regular season weeks. Jones' practice participation is always helpful here. When he's able to return to a full Friday practice (and isn't listed on the game status report), it means he's starting that week's game at near full strength. That's again the case this week. It doesn't mean Jones won't be limited briefly at times but it's safe to expect him to see his usual workload.

A.J. Green | Calf | Not Listed | Expected to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - Limited | Thurs - Full | Fri - Full

The Bengals have regularly been resting key offensive starters on Wednesday and returning them to full practice on Thursday. Green was seen limping at the end of last week's game and has fought minor lower leg injuries since the preseason. But he's missed very few snaps and the consecutive full practices are reassuring. He's not listed on the game status report and should see his usual workload this week.

Kelvin Benjamin | Knee | Questionable | Expected to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - Not Listed | Thurs - Limited | Fri - Limited

Benjamin was added to the injury report on Thursday with a knee concern and remained limited on Friday. This is likely not a new injury for Benjamin, who has been playing through soreness all season. Ron Rivera told reporters on Friday he felt good about all of the questionable players playing this weekend. That would also include Cam Newton and Jonathan Stewart. Benjamin isn't entirely without concern -- he managed just one target in Week 3. But he's been productive in each of the other four weeks this season and should see his usual workload. The Panthers have an early Sunday afternoon start time; we'll have a good sense of his status prior to lineup lock.

Julian Edelman | Foot | Questionable | Expected to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - Limited | Thurs - Limited | Fri - Limited

You can ignore the Patriots' practice participation and game status report. Unless a player has absolutely no chance to play and it's obvious to anyone older than three years old he will not be able to play, that player will be limited in practice all week and listed questionable on the game status report. On one hand, it's consistent and easy to read. On the other hand, it's consistent and impossible to read. Thankfully, the New England and national media includes multiple writers who know how to read Belichick's locker room. If they show concern during the week, I worry. There's been no concern with Edelman and we've seen him active and effective while playing through whatever foot soreness he may be experiencing. This week should be no exception.

Alshon Jeffery | Hamstring | Questionable | Expected to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - Limited | Thurs - Limited | Fri - Limited

It's fair to wonder if Jeffery's knee and hamstring woes have been affecting his ability to separate from defensive backs. His target counts have been dreadful and suggest he's not been healthy enough to be used as more than a decoy. But Jeffery's body language after many passing downs and John Fox's comments that Jeffery was clearly open after watching the team's All-22 film suggest otherwise. Jeffery's practice participation line reads the same as it has every other week this year and his game status remains questionable. But he's playing again this week. We'll see if the frustration around his current usage prompts a change in offensive philosophy this week.

Eddie Royal | Calf | Questionable | Expected to Play | Likely Limited

Practice Participation: Wed - DNP | Thurs - DNP | Fri - DNP

I didn't expect Royal to play last week after not practicing at all with a calf injury. He tested his injury in pre-game warmups, convinced the medical staff he was healthy enough to play, then caught seven passes on nine targets. His average depth of target was not impressive and he managed only six yards per reception. And he played only 56% of Chicago's offensive snaps. Royal again missed practice all week and is listed questionable. He is again expected to play but it is difficult to project a higher snap percentage or average depth of target this week.

Randall Cobb | Neck | Not Listed | Expected to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - Limited | Thurs - Limited | Fri - Full

Cobb increased his practice participation all week and fully practiced on Friday. He's not listed on the game status report and will play. The Packers have been conservative with head and neck injuries over the years. Clearing Cobb means the medical staff believes the strength and range of motion in his neck is back to baseline and he'll be fully able to protect his head and neck this week.

Will Fuller | Hamstring | Questionable | Likely Inactive

Practice Participation: Wed - Limited | Thurs - Limited | Fri - Limited

We saw a similar practice participation line from Fuller after a hamstring strain leading into Week 1. He showed no limitation and played effectively. There's been no indication from the Texans this strain is more severe. Fuller is expected to play. Watch pregame warmup reports for any surprises but Fuller should see his usual workload this week.

Sunday Morning Update: Adam Schefter tweeted this morning that Fuller is not expected to play tonight. I've changed his status to "Likely Inactive."

Sammie Coates | Hand | Questionable | Game-time Decision | Limited

Practice Participation: Wed - DNP | Thurs - DNP | Fri - Limited

There is optimism that Coates will play this week. I've been skeptical all week and it's hard to argue against the positive trend -- but I'm worried about Coates' effectiveness. Coates has a laceration near the base of a finger -- it's been called both hand and finger. These are not trivial to stitch and the stitches will not be ready for removal by this weekend. It was also revealed late Friday that Coates has a broken bone in his index finger. Coates may be able to play through the pain of this injury. We saw him pad and wrap the hand last week, continue to receive targets, and ultimately catch a touchdown pass in the second half after the injury. The team allowed him to catch passes on Friday and were clearly evaluating him with the intent of activating him.

I spoke with RotoViz contributor and hand specialist Dr. Jeff Budoff, who reassured me that Coates wouldn't be cleared to catch passes if the team was concerned about aggravating an unstable hand/finger injury. But it's clear Coates will be fighting a painful injury. The team has noted swelling in the hand and images show Coates working with a long finger splint. Already known to struggle with his hands, Dr. Budoff notes the importance of the base of the index finger in catching the ball. Coates is always a boom-bust play. Playing through swelling and possibly splinted, it's tough to see him repeating last week's performance.

Saturday Night Update: The Steelers added a receiver from the practice squad Saturday afternoon. There are conflicting reports about what this means for Coates. It's possible the team had planned to add depth with Markus Wheaton also ruled out. But it's easy to see this as a sign the team has decided Coates will sit this week. Adam Schefter tweeted overnight that Coates has a fractured thumb. That's different from earlier reports defining the injury as a fractured finger and images from Friday's practice that showed a splint on Coates' index finger. Regardless, the trend on Saturday was definitely negative and I was already worried about Coates' availability. I've changed his expectation to game-time decision.

Tyler Lockett | Knee | Not Listed | Expected to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - Full | Thurs - Full | Fri - Full

Lockett has been playing through a low grade PCL sprain since Week 1. The bye week was expected to give Lockett the extra time needed to fully recover. He fully practiced this week and is not listed on the game status report. However, his practice line looked the same in Week 4 and he managed less than 25 snaps for the third consecutive week. I'm optimistic Lockett sees more time in Week 6 but the ongoing emergence of Jimmy Graham and Christine Michael make his snap count and target expectation a high variance projection.

Others of note: Steve Smith (ankle) was unable to practice this week and declared out. I'll update his return to play projection on Monday. Brandon Marshall (foot), T.Y. Hilton (hip), Quincy Enunwa (knee), Jeremy Kerley (ankle), Mohamed Sanu (ankle), Terrance Williams (shoulder), Brian Quick (calf), Anquan Boldin (ankle), and Eli Rogers (toe) are all expected to play and see their usual workload this week. Quick was added to the injury report on Friday and listed questionable but has played through a similar late week downgrade in the past and will likely do so again. Markus Wheaton (shoulder) was ruled out on Friday.

Tight End

Rob Gronkowski | Illness / Hamstring | Questionable | Expected to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - Limited | Thurs - Limited | Fri - DNP

Gronkowski caused a stir when he was absent during the media portion of practice on Friday. It was later reported he missed practice due to illness. He's fully expected to play. After looking nearly fully recovered last week, Gronkowski should be even closer to his usual self this week.

Jordan Reed | Concussion | Declared Out | Likely Inactive

Practice Participation: Wed - DNP | Thurs - DNP | Fri - DNP

Washington listed Reed questionable this week. I'm not sure why teams do this. There's no chance Reed will play this week. He wasn't diagnosed with a concussion until Wednesday. It's possible but highly improbable to see a player cleared through the return to play protocol in three days. But Reed's situation is special. He's suffered at least five concussions in his career. Washington has shown extreme caution with him in the past, often taking many extra days to advance Reed through the stages of the exercise protocol. They didn't clear Reed for a limited practice on Friday. I'll be shocked if Reed warms up, much less is cleared to play. He'll be listed week-to-week in my return to play expectation table on Monday and he's much more likely to be doubtful for Week 7 than probable for Week 6.

Saturday Update: Washington ruled Reed out on Saturday.

Jimmy Graham | Knee | Not Listed | Expected to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - Full | Thurs - Full | Fri - Full

Graham fully practiced coming out of the bye and has averaged about 50 snaps per game over the past three games. Graham's snap percentage (67%) and count dropped a bit after experiencing back spasms leading into Week 4 but that's now a non-issue. I think Graham is close to coming off the injury report altogether. He should see 45+ snaps again this week.

Martellus Bennett | Ankle | Questionable | Expected to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - Limited | Thurs - Limited | Fri - Limited

Bennett suffered a low grade high ankle sprain last week but returned to the game and caught multiple touchdowns after his injury. The Patriots' injury report isn't helpful here but Bennett was in the locker room entertaining the media every day this week. There's a chance he'll be more limited this week than last but all indications are that he's healthy enough to see his usual workload.

Zach Miller | Ribs | Questionable | Expected to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - DNP | Thurs - Limited | Fri - Limited

Miller's practice line looks the same as last week when he played nearly 90% of Chicago's offensive snaps and caught seven of eight targets. There's no concern about Miller's availability this week in the local media.

Julius Thomas | Elbow | Not Listed | Expected to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - Full | Thurs - Full | Fri - Full

The Jaguars didn't discuss the nature of Thomas' injury this week. Thomas would only say he was planning to play. Whatever held him out of the Week 4 game seems to be behind him now. He's fully practiced and not listed on the game status report. It's tough to gauge the risk of aggravation without an injury diagnosis but Thomas looks to be in line for his usual workload.

Charles Clay | Knee | Questionable | Expected to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - DNP | Thurs - Limited | Fri - Limited

Clay has followed the same weekly protocol for three weeks. Rest early, limited late, listed questionable, play on Sunday. He's been more effective over the past two weeks and looks to be moving more comfortably than he did earlier in the season.

Gary Barnidge | Forearm/Hip | Questionable | Expected to Play

Practice Participation: Wed - Limited | Thurs - Limited | Fri - Limited

There's been little information about Barnidge this week but the Browns' media often expresses concern for players likely to be inactive. There's been no concern this week, so I'll tentatively call Barnidge likely to play rather than game-time decision.

Clive Walford | Knee | Questionable | Game-time Decision

Practice Participation: Wed - Limited | Thurs - Limited | Fri - Limited

Walford tried to rehab and play last week but was ruled out as a game-time decision. He's still not fully practicing and may not be ready again this week.

Others of note: Jason Witten (chest) and Larry Donnell (concussion) will play this week. Donnell fully practiced on both Thursday and Friday. Tyler Eifert (ankle/back), Eric Ebron (ankle/knee), and Jared Cook (ankle) have been declared out. I still think Eifert is at least a week away from returning. I'll update return to play expectations for all on Monday.
