NOTE: This column is a living document and will be updated throughout the morning. Major changes to the content will be in red. Check back often for additions as gameday inactives are announced and lineup / depth chart changes are reported. I'll also be retweeting those reports with quick bits of analysis, so make sure you're following me at (@JeneBramel) and checking my timeline on Twitter on Sunday mornings.
Jamaal Charles (knee), Calvin Johnson (ankle), A.J. Green (thigh), T.Y. Hilton (hamstring), Marshawn Lynch (back), Sammy Watkins (hip), Mike Wallace (chest), Dwyane Allen (ankle), and Reggie Bush (ankle/back) are all probable to play this week. Their nagging injuries should only be a small part of your deliberations and I believe all of these players can be used as you normally would.
Ben Roethlisberger continues to be listed on the injury report as not injury related and was said to be sharp in practice late this week. He's still a little risky with the hand injury, but should be safe to trust.
Here are today's most critical injury situations and game time decisions.
930 ET Scroll to the bottom for an embedded string of my tweets this morning detailing my gut feelings on these players as we approach pregame warmups.
ARIAN FOSTER | GROIN | PROBABLE
Foster's practice participation line started out more concerning than last week's, with a Wednesday DNP rather than his limited workout last week. Friday's full practice and the probable tag are as reassuring as it gets for Foster, who had looked loose and unconcerned about his injury during some playful banter with the Houston media on Thursday. Foster had 24 touches against Tennessee last week and has a strong chance to get 20+ on the road in Jacksonville today.
Fantasy expectation: Use Foster as you normally would.
rashad jennings | ankle | questionable
Mulitple beat writers believe it's more likely than not Jennings will be on the active roster today. It makes sense -- Jennings was able to practice, though limited, on Friday and made the trip to Tennessee. But Jennings was not practicing as the game plan was installed earlier this week. More importantly, Jennings veered from his consistent optimism to say he was definitely not 100% on Friday and acknowledged he'd have to "fight through" the injury.
Jennings may be active, but he has only the slimmest of chances to see 15 touches today. Art Stapleton told our Sigmund Bloom Jennings might be used only in limited pass protection situations. Such a specific statement from one of the more plugged in beat writers feels like it rings of truth. Even if Jennings were more healthy than he's letting on, there's a sizable risk of an aggravation today.
Fantasy expectation: I don't see Jennings being used enough to hold fantasy value today. If you're stuck and can use him as a flex play, it may be worth the risk. But I'd root for him to be inactive and continue the rehab process.
715 ET: Here's the latest on Jennings from Ian Rapoport.
As of yesterday, #Giants RB Rashad Jennings had ankle discomfort. But he stayed off it this week, hoping to play. Will know after testing it
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) December 7, 2014
It's no surprise Jennings is still having pain in the ankle. My read is that he'll need to convince the team he's able to play during pregame warmups. But he was able to convince them to allow him to practice on Friday and travel with the team. I still don't believe we'll see enough positive news on Jennings this morning to trust him to get more than ten touches, however.
1120 ET: Jennings is active. Multiple reports continue to suggest he'll be used in passing situations early. If Williams struggles or Jennings feeling good, his usage may increase from there. Still suggest extreme caution on Jennings and I'd be nervous about Williams as more than a low ceiling RB2.
justin forsett | knee | questionable
Though he's listed questionable, I can't find any credible source reporting any serious concern with Forsett's availability today. He's banged up but not enough to need the rest as the Ravens push for a playoff spot. If active, it's likely Forsett sees his usual usage. Thankfully, this will be settled by 11:30 ET when the inactive list is released -- at the latest.
Fantasy expectation: After confirming Forsett is active, it should be safe to consider him a borderline RB1-RB2 today.
715 ET: Adam Schefter is reporting this morning Forsett will play.
larry fitzgerald | knee | questionable
He's a game time decision, but I think Fitzgerald is on the probable side of questionable today. If he plays, there are indications he'll be used in less than his usual role, and I can't find any reports that he's ready to play without a brace. Those are two reasonable expectations and two major red flags for Fitzgerald's targets and potential stat line. It's hard to believe Fitzgerald can run a full route tree effectively with only one limited practice and an injury that may need 4+ weeks to heal. Add in the inconsistency of Drew Stanton, and there's lots of reasons to worry about Fitzgerald's effectiveness today
Fantasy expectation: Fitzgerald is a low ceiling, low floor WR3 at best today. And it's possible he'll turn up on the inactive list later this afternoon.
730 ET: Ian Rapoport tweets the Cardinals expect Fitzgerald to play unless he doesn't feel right in pregame warmups.
roddy white | ankle | questionable
Do not forget the Roddy Rule. White has told us he's not likely to be a big part of the offensive game plan if he's not fully practicing on Friday. White told reporters he'd play today after Friday's limited practice. But a single limited practice is not enough for me to buy back into White as a high floor WR2. Expect him to be limited if he's on the active roster and any pregame or in-game setback will likely end his day.
Fantasy expectation: There's too much risk with White again this week, particularly with his Monday start. Consider him a boom-bust WR3 rather than his usual high floor WR2/3.
Isaiah Crowell | hip | questionable
I can tell two equally persuasive stories here. The pessimistic tale would cite Mike Pettine's "hopeful" comment on Monday, the inability of Crowell to get back to a full practice on Friday, and the lack of any specifics about the severity of his injury to set our mind at ease. The optimistic tale would include a discusson of Crowell's two consecutive limited practices, the relative optimism on Wednesday, and the lack of any specifics about the severity of his injury to raise concern for a more serious situation.
It's best to consider Crowell a game-time decision, but I'd lean toward him playing. Without knowing the particulars of his injury, it's very tough to handicap the chance Crowell leaves early or rotates out of the game more often than he would if he were healthy.
Fantasy expectation: If he's active -- which will be known at 1130 ET -- drop Crowell a half to full tier due to the risk of aggravation and smaller than expected workload. But if he's active, he's worth the risk in your lineup as a RB2 with upside.
845 ET: Like many others this morning, Crowell will go through warmups before a final decision is made.
#Browns expect RB Isaiah Crowell to play today, I’m told, but he’ll test it pregame. They’ll ride the hot hand regardless
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) December 7, 2014
I'm getting a little more leery of Crowell here as these reports suggest the potential for a very low floor. It's a risk-reward situation for sure.
julius thomas | ankle | questionable
Thomas was limited all three days of practice this week and continues to look healthier with each successive practice. But the most tuned-in Denver beat writers are still suggesting Thomas is a game time decision and the questionable tag is accurate.
Just as important is the change in the Denver offense since Thomas went down with injury. C.J. Anderson has become a focal point of the offense, which may limit Thomas' usage when he returns. Regardless of his health, I expect to see Thomas take fewer snaps and run a smaller number of routes than before his injury.
Fantasy expectation: If he's active, Thomas will be used in high leverage situations, including the red zone. Thomas is a priority red zone target, but there are other viable options there now, too. I'd avoid Thomas until he shows he's healthy and still a major part of Denver's game plan.
1130 ET: Adam Schefter saying on ESPN pregame show that the Broncos are leaving the decision to play up to Thomas. Schefter says decision has still not been made.
desean jackson | shin | questionable
Jackson didn't practice this week and Washington looks likely to play without him today. Bruises around the lower leg can be very limiting and often look worse 48 hours after the injury. That's likely the case here and I don't think we'll see Jackson against St. Louis. The lone positive is the early afternoon game time. We'll know Jackson's status before lineups lock.
Fantasy expectation: Already the very definition of a boom-bust WR (WR1 upside | WR4- floor), Jackson's set of outcomes would skew much closer to his floor than his upside if he's active today. Avoid him unless you are a very heavy underdog and the value in a potential WR1+ game well outwieighs the risk of a zero.
There's a glut of game time decisions today. There's really no clarity on these guys, but I'll give a gut feeling on each.
— Jene Bramel (@JeneBramel) December 7, 2014
If you're making fantasy decisions today, you (1) understand that all of the game-time guys have a low floor and (2) go with your gut
— Jene Bramel (@JeneBramel) December 7, 2014
Jennings: Gut says he shouldn't be playing today, but will be active anyway. Risk of leaving early, small chance he sees 10+ touches.
— Jene Bramel (@JeneBramel) December 7, 2014
Forsett: Gut says the reports his knee is good to go are accurate. Risk here, but I think his floor is nearly as high as usual.
— Jene Bramel (@JeneBramel) December 7, 2014
Fitzgerald: Gut says he's likely to play. Would bet he's more limited than usual, possibly frustrated. Boom-bust WR3. Stanton also issue.
— Jene Bramel (@JeneBramel) December 7, 2014
Crowell: Gut says he's active, close enough to full strength to trust. But a tweak and hot start for West and things change quickly.
— Jene Bramel (@JeneBramel) December 7, 2014
Julius: Gut says active. But limited and offense different than before his injury. He's not same caliber "red zone only" play JGraham was.
