Week 1 is finally here. The final weeks of the preseason were thankfully quiet on the injury front and there are no critical game time decisions to monitor this morning. However, there are some players with unclear expectations as they return from offseason surgery and training camp practice maintenance plans. This column will focus primarily on skill position players. Check my Sunday AM IDP Notes feature for updates and expectations on injured defensive players.
NOTE: This column is a living document and will be updated throughout the morning. Major changes to the content will be in red. Check back often for additions as gameday inactives are announced and lineup / depth chart changes are reported. I'll also be retweeting those reports with quick bits of analysis, so make sure you're following @JeneBramel and checking my timeline on Twitter.
Roddy White | ankle | questionable
White was limited in practice all week and the Falcons have him listed questionable with his ankle injury. He's had more than three weeks to recover, though, and there's been no indication that his workload will be reduced today. Gameday aggravations are always possible, but White has played through minor injuries well in the past and has yet to miss a game in his career.
Fantasy expectation: Use White as you normally would. Even if his injury were more worrisome, the matchup against the Saints would be too strong to consider sitting him. He is a fine WR1 this week.
1030 ET: Adam Schefter is reporting that the Falcons are worried about White's injury, which is now being reported as a high ankle sprain. Jeff Darlington reports the Falcons say he'll be active and start. There was always suspicion that the injury was a high ankle sprain and I think it's notable that White is the only questionable major skill position player on today's list for the media to chase and "scoop" on. If you have multiple top 20 wide receiver options, consider sitting White. But if he's active, I wouldn't sit him for a WR3- option. More as it develops...
1050 ET: Multiple sources are reporting that White will be active and start today. I still can't see the mechanism clearly on replay and there's been no report on the grade and severity of the injury. It's worrisome that there's enough concern three and a half weeks later that White needed to convince the team on the field in pregame warmups. And there are both reassuring (Julio Jones and Andre Johnson) comps and worrisome comps (Rob Gronkowski, Matt Forte) for this situation. In the end, it's unclear. If you're nervous and have another top 25 option, use it. But I don't think I'm sitting White in this matchup for a WR3- option unless there's elite boom-bust upside. Even then, I think I dance with White.
Arian Foster | calf | probable
Foster frustrated fantasy owners all preseason with a slow return from a mid-grade calf sprain and then an out-of-nowhere injection to treat a disc problem in his back. He's fully practiced all week and listed probable, but may still see his workload reduced with Ben Tate available and the Texans unlikely to push Foster until he's fully cleared the reconditioning hurdle.
Fantasy expectation: Foster may see just 14-20 touches Monday night, but he remains a borderline RB1 against a San Diego defense that's full of holes in the back seven.
jamaal charles | Trent Richardson | Maurice Jones-Drew | LeSean McCoy
All four running backs had a bumpy training camp and preseason, but they've been back practicing with their respective teams without concern. None are on the injury report and all are expected to get their usual workload this weekend.
Fantasy expectation: Use all as you normally would this weekend.
Danny Amendola | groin | probable
Bill Belichick threw fantasy owners a bone this weekend. It's extremely rare to see an injured Patriot fully practice or be listed as something other than questionable on Friday. Amendola fully practiced on Friday and is listed probable. Though aggravations and reconditioning problems are still possible at this phase of his recovery, his practice participation is a strong indication that the Patriots are not very concerned about his groin injury.
Fantasy expectation: Amendola's matchup against a beat up secondary is as good as it gets. He's a reasonable bet to put up WR1/WR2 numbers in PPR leagues and is a safe play in non-PPR setups, too.
Victor Cruz | heel | probable
Cruz was limited on the injury report this week, but hasn't had any reported setbacks and has been back on the practice field for two weeks. The bone bruise near his heel may not be fully healed, but it is something that can be managed with shoe inserts and pain relievers if necessary. He should see a full workload today.
Fantasy expectation: Keep a hedge on your roster if you're a conservative owner, but Cruz is a safe WR1 / WR2 option against Dallas tonight.
Jordy Nelson | knee | not on injury report
Randall Cobb | bicep | not on injury report
Nelson is fully recovered from surgery to decompress a nerve in his knee. He's been practicing for two weeks and is through the critical reconditioning period. Cobb took a handful of practices off to let his bicep injury cool off and there haven't been any recent reports that he's been limited by his arm. Both players practiced fully all week.
Fantasy expectation: Two weeks ago, it looked likely that both players might need to be managed carefully in practice and in early season games to prevent aggravated injuries. Now, after two strong weeks of practice, both look in midseason form. I'll be watching Cobb more closely for setbacks than Nelson, but both are fully trustworthy WR2+ options today.
Marques Colston | foot | probable
Colston was slowly worked into practice this preseason due to a foot condition. It's not clear yet whether he's suffering from the plantar fasciitis that limited him last year at times, but there's been no report of a more serious issue. Colston fully practiced all week and has been very productive through injury -- last year's foot problems included -- and should see no change in his usual role today.
Fantasy expectation: Colston belongs in your lineup every week as a WR2 with WR1 upside.
Ahmad Bradshaw | foot | probable
Bradshaw practiced fully all week and will play today. That bodes well for his season since Bradshaw was in a walking boot nearly twice as long as expected after his January foot surgery.
Fantasy expectation: The Colts have said that they'll have some packages ready for Bradshaw today but have hinted that his slow return to practice will limit his workload. Vick Ballard has been running with the first team all preseason. Consider Bradshaw a better flex option than RB2, then re-evaluate next week.
Rashard Mendenhall | Knee | Probable
The Cardinals didn't provide a specific diagnosis for Mendenhall, but reports suggested only a mild sprain. He was able to practice fully on Friday and is expected to start. Without a clear threat on the Arizona depth chart, the full practice and positive post-practice reports should mean Mendenhall will get a full workload today.
Fantasy expectation: Mendenhall needs to prove that he can be successful behind the Cardinals' offensive line and on passing downs before he can be trusted as an every-week starter. Consider him a marginal flex play on the road in St. Louis today.
Jordan Cameron | groin | probable
Cameron practiced fully this week after a groin injury limited him late in the preseason. He's on the injury report as probable but is not expected to be limited today.
Fantasy expectation: Cameron had started to see his ADP rise into TE1 territory after a strong start to his preseason. If you drafted him thinking he had a Julius Thomas like effort in him or is your designated transition tight end until Rob Gronkowski returns, use him today. Otherwise, consider keeping him on your bench unless you're in a TE premium or superflex league.
Santonio Holmes | foot | probable
Holmes is listed probable this week, but is unlikely to see a full workload if he plays. His Lisfranc injury was well toward the most concerning end of the spectrum and Holmes has yet to say anything that suggests he's 100% ready to return.
Fantasy expectation: It's unlikely that Holmes plays more than 30-40 snaps. His quarterback situation is a mess. And he may be lined up against Darrelle Revis, who's been much more positive about his recovery from ACL reconstruction than Holmes has been about his injury. Holmes belongs on your bench (or waiver wire) until he shows he's ready to play.
E.J. Manuel | knee | probable
Manuel had an arthroscopic procedure to remove loose cartilage in his knee joint. His recovery progressed smoothly and he had no setbacks as he returned to practice fully this week.
Fantasy expectation: There's an outside chance that Manuel will surprise with top 10 fantasy numbers against the Patriots today, but he should be on your bench unless you're in a 2 QB league.
Best of luck in your fantasy games this weekend. I'll be back on Monday morning with updates on the status of Rob Gronkowski and review the Week 1 injuries. Follow me on Twitter @JeneBramel for breaking news and analysis during the games today.
