Let me start off by saying this article is likely going to ruffle some feathers. Like all things in life, there are winners and losers. And some of you homers are rooting for teams and players that simply suck.
Value-Based Drafting shows you that every player has value. But we all know that really isn't the case. You can't load up with players from Jacksonville, Miami and Cleveland (even if they were value picks) and expect to win your league. Suck In...equals guess what...Suck Out.
In an effort to eliminate the suck from the Top 300 PPR draft list, I have chosen to implement the following rules:
Rule 1: All players on the worst eight offenses have been eliminated. Worst offenses are calculated looking at my team projections using standard PPR scoring. These teams did not make the cut in 2012: Jacksonville Jaguars, Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns, St. Louis Rams, Minnesota Vikings, Kansas City Chiefs, New York Jets, Cincinnati Bengals. The players on these teams are shaded gray on the below list.
Rule 2: Conversely, the top eight offenses (New Orleans Saints, New England Patriots, Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, Atlanta Falcons, and Philadelphia Eagles) keep their players on the abbreviated cheatsheet. These players are shaded green on the below list.
Rule 3: Of the remaining 16 teams from rules 1 and 2 above, the eight with the worst playoff matchups (weeks 14-16) have been given a "Yellow Card" warning. These teams have been tagged for their difficult playoff schedules: San Diego Chargers (@Pit, Car, @NYJ), Washington Redskins (Bal, @Cle, @Phi), Tennessee Titans (@Ind, NYJ, @GB), Indianapolis Colts (@Ind, NYJ, @GB), Chicago Bears (@Min, GB, @Ari), San Francisco 49ers (Mia, @NE, @Sea), Seattle Seahawks (Ari, @Buf, SF), and the Arizona Cardinals (@Sea, Det, Chi). These players are shaded yellow on the below list.
Rule 4: Of the remaining 16 teams from rules 1 and 2 above, the eight with the worst starting matchups (weeks 1-5) have been given a "Yellow Card" warning. These teams have been tagged for their difficult starting schedules: San Francisco 49ers (@GB, Det, @Min, @NYJ, Buf), Pittsburgh Steelers (@Den, NYJ, @Oak, BYE, Phi), Tennessee Titans (NE, @SD, Det, @Hou, @Min), Oakland Raiders (SD, @Mia, Pit, @Den, BYE), Buffalo Bills (@NYJ, KC, @Cle, NE, @SF), Indianapolis Colts (@Chi, Min, Jac, BYE, GB), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Car, @NYG, @Dal, Was, BYE), and the Denver Broncos (Pit, @Atl, Hou, Oak, @NE). These players are shaded yellow on the below list.
Rule 5: Any team flagged for two "Yellow Cards" is "Red Carded". These players are shaded red on the below list. Players from the San Francisco 49ers, Tennessee Titans, and Indianapolis Colts meet this criteria.
Rule 6: Old players suck. They get hurt a lot and offer minimal upside. Go ahead and cross off Terrell Owens (39 years old), Matt Hasselbeck (37), Peyton Manning (36), Tony Gonzalez (36), Tom Brady (35), Randy Moss (35), Reggie Wayne (34), Dallas Clark (33), Steve Smith, Car (33), Santana Moss (33), Fred Jackson (31), Willis McGahee (31), and Ronnie Brown (31) from the remaining players. Some are still pretending to have game, but many will likely disappoint. These players are shaded a lighter gray to match their hair color.
Rule 7: Unless you are in a league that does not allow transactions, you should not be drafting multiple kickers and defenses. Go ahead and cross off kickers and defense outside of the top 12. These defenses and kickers are shaded gray. The top 12 kickers are ranked as players based on rules 1-8 above. The top 12 defenses are marked as green.
Rule 8: The first 20 players are exempt from the other rules. By definition they can't suck and be in the top 20. These players are shaded green if they are not on the 8 worst offenses list and don't have bad starting and ending schedules. If they are on one of the other lists they are shaded yellow.
Rule 9: These rules will be done in the order they are listed. That will reverse some previous color combinations.
Rule 10: Any player not impacted by these other rules will be shaded light green.
Understanding the colors:
Green - These players either play in the eight best offenses or represent the best 20 players in fantasy football. Draft these players with no fear.
White - These players play in average offenses and have good to great starting and finishing schedules. Draft these players with little fear.
Yellow - These players play in average offenses and have either a hard starting or hard ending schedule. Try to minimize the number of these players you draft.
Red - These players play in average offenses and have difficult starts (weeks 1-5) and finishes (weeks 14-16). These players are sure to disappoint when you need them the most and are best to avoid.
Light Gray - These guys are OLD. Only draft one of these players when it represents exceptional value. Most of these players should be avoided.
Dark Gray - These players either play on the 8 worst offenses in the league or are kickers or defenses you will not be drafting. Unless you can get substantial value against ADP, you should look to minimize these players.
