Draft Slots Study - 14 Teams / Pick 1.10
By Chris Smith
August 29th, 2011

Every new NFL season there is much discussion on the positives and the negatives for each of the draft slots in a fantasy football league. While it is possible to win a league no matter where you draft from, it is obvious to veteran fantasy owners that there is some advantage to drafting in certain positions as opposed to others. This series of articles will take an in-depth look at some of the interesting slots in a 14-team league and outline the positives and negatives of each slot. In addition each separate article will showcase a mock draft compiled using the Draft Dominator.

To make things more interesting, I have used a unique turn in scoring as all positions will score 6 points per touchdown. That included touchdown passes from the quarterback position. This will certainly change the strategies throughout the draft.

This particular series is based on...

  • 14-team redraft league / 18-round fantasy draft
  • Must start 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 FLEX (RB/WR), 1 TE, 1 DEF, 1 K
  • Scoring is as follows:
  • 1 pt every 20 passing yards
  • 1 pt every 10 rushing yards
  • 6 points per passing touchdown
  • 6 points per rushing / receiving touchdown
  • 1 point per reception
  • 3 points per field goal / 1 pt per extra point
  • 2 points per interception, fumble recovery and safety
  • 1 pt per sack
  • 6 points per defensive touchdown
  • This study is performed using the mock draft function within our own Draft Dominator software. The program gives you the ability to draft for one team and have the other teams taken over by computer control using different ADP lists. For the purpose of this study, I will use David Dodds' projections found within the Dominator. The mock draft ability of the Dominator is a nice way to prepare for your fantasy draft. Running the same draft several times will help you to anticipate all possible scenarios when your own draft arrives. Check it out today.

If you would like to see a particular study this season, please send me an e-mail at smith@footballguys.com, and I will do my best to cover your scoring rules, starting lineup requirements, etc. before the end of training camp.

    Onto the article.

    Drafting 10th overall (14-team re-draft)

After tackling the 1st and 7th draft slots, I have moved on to the 10th spot of this draft. This is an interesting spot to draft from in 2011 using these unique rules. The top running backs are all going to be off the board here in all likelihood as is WR Andre Johnson. Now of course you will take a top running back or Andre Johnson if they fall to the ten-spot but what if they do not. What is the best plan of action from this slot. A second-tier running back like Steven Jackson, the next-tier of receivers such as a Calvin Johnson, Hakeem Nicks or Roddy White. It is good to have options but in a fourteen team league, going in the incorrect direction will be terrible for your team. Let's get to it.

Possible strategies to incorporate into your draft

    Examples

    1. League that goes RB heavy in first two rounds: Many leagues out there still feature running backs flying off the board in the first two rounds. If this happens, RB/WR/WR is certainly the play here.

    Possible squad through five rounds

  • WR Andre Johnson 1.10
  • WR Calvin Johnson 2.05
  • RB Mark Ingram 3.10
  • RB Shonn Greene 4.05
  • QB Matt Ryan 5.10
  • There appears to be some interesting running backs available in the third and fourth rounds If you can secure two top receivers in the NFL to go along with a running back tandem of Ingram and Greene in addition to a potentially great fantasy quarterback this year in Ryan, the foundation is put in place for a real run at the title.

    2. League that has more flexibility in first two rounds: If your league has more flexibility in the top include the best quarterbacks and receivers off the board, then a more conventional approach is in order. I can see going RB/RB/RB to begin a draft where a FLEX player starts each week.

    Possible squad through five rounds

  • QB Matt Ryan 5.10
  • RB Chris Johnson 1.10
  • RB LeGarrette Blount 3.10
  • WR Larry Fitzgerald 2.05
  • WR Steve Johnson 4.05
  • This is very similar to the first example except for the running back talent is improved and the receiver talent weakened. Fitzgerald and Steve Johnson however is a formidable duo at the receiver position. Having a running back pair of Chris Johnson and Blount will provide excellent fantasy output throughout the season. Finally in a league with 6 points per touchdown pass, you want a quarterback who can put up some good numbers. Matt Ryan looks like he is capable of elevating to a top-five quarterback and he is surrounded by weapons in 2011.

    Positives of the draft slot

  • Can take the draft down multiple paths and still success
  • Not much wait between odd and even round picks make it easier to project player availability
  • Will even have running back talent slide to you in round one or have a top receiver or quarterback to begin your team
  • Negatives of the draft slot

  • Likely this owner will miss out on the top-six running backs on the board
  • Owner could miss out on top-six running backs, top quarterback and top receiver putting him behind the eight ball everywhere
  • Long wait between even and odd round picks makes it very difficult to project the direction the draft will take
  • Final Draft Table

Breaking down the mock draft from the 10th draft position

    Round 1: WR Calvin Johnson

The easy choice here would be to take Aaron Rodgers and if you do you'll be getting an excellent quarterback and fantasy weapon at six points per pass. However I still believe that there are quarterbacks down the rankings some that have potential to match Rodgers and company this year. The player I am targeting at QB later on is Matt Ryan who is surrounded with explosive weapons on offense. Not lovely any of the running backs I see here, I take the 2nd best receiver on my board in Calvin Johnson. He may not be as attractive as Rodgers but I believe taking him here will make my squad stronger later on.

Rounds 2/3: WR Larry Fitzgerald / RB LeGarrette Blount

Starting a fantasy draft with a WR/WR combo is gutsy but with a point per reception, have a Johnson / Fitzgerald combination will be sick. I do not see a running back that I really love here so taking a risk may pay off in a huge way. To do this however it is important to have a good read on your league. If you feel all the running backs will be gone in the third round, take one of the running backs still on your board as it isn't a bad pick. Having a Gore or Mendenhall on your team will still enable you to be in good shape. It's fun to do the study in a different way though and I love the potential of both these players.

Rounds 4/5: RB DeAngelo Williams / QB Matt Ryan

Waiting until the fourth round to take your RB2 and still landing a DeAngelo Williams is pretty sweet. Even better news is that there are several backs here I am comfortable in selecting as my 2nd back including Michael Turner, Daniel Thomas, Cedric Benson and Ryan Grant. Of those players though, Williams has thse best chance to leap into the top-ten even with his sharing time in Carolina. I do not usually grab a quarterback in round five of a draft. However with 6 points per touchdown and the huge upside I see for Matt Ryan this season, he is a no brainer for me. I scoop him up eagerly here.

Rounds 6/7: WR Chad Ochocinco / TE Jimmy Graham

Having two running backs, two receivers and my starting quarterback in place and feeling good, I decide here to get the final two pieces of my starting lineup requirement of the main positions. Ochocinco is a risk at receiver but coming into a wonderful situation in New England he could surprise with a top-ten fantasy season. Worth the risk in round six due to that upside. Round seven comes and I'm delighted to add Jimmy Graham of the Saints whom I believe could be a monster this season after a nice first season in 2010.

Rounds 8/9: RB Willis McGahee / WR Jeremy Maclin

I now have the luxury to simply add pieces to the puzzle. I add Willis McGahee as he will catch some passes and maybe vulture touchdowns at worst. At best, he'll become a starter in Denver. Jeremy Maclin but the cancer scare slid him down the rankings. I doubt he'll be available here in the real draft but you never know and he is a no brainer here.

At the halfway point of the draft, our team looks like this...

    Quarterbacks

  • Matt Ryan
  • Running Backs

  • LeGarrette Blount
  • DeAngelo Williams
  • Willis McGahee
  • Wide Receivers

  • Calvin Johnson
  • Larry Fitzgerald
  • Chad Ochocinco
  • Jeremy Maclin
  • Tight Ends

  • Jimmy Graham
  • Place Kickers

  • none
  • Defenses

  • none
  • I cannot be more pleased with how this draft is going. I have all the pieces in place to make a real run here. I have two good running backs with a nice depth piece in McGahee that will do a good job. Not as flashy as many of the teams in this league but I make up for it with a receiving quartet that could be absolutely incredible in 2011. If Ochocinco gets his head on straight the sky is the limit here and I'll crush with fantasy points on a weekly basis. Finally I have a good quarterback, I believe will be exceptional and a tight end in Jimmy Graham I believe will be top three. That isn't a bad start at all. The only area of concern is depth at running back but I hope to address that in the rounds ahead.

Rounds 10-13: RB Shane Vereen / WR Jordy Nelson / RB Pierre Thomas / DEF Chargers

I am able to add a pair of running backs here that have the ability to be the starter for the team if given the opportunity. Shane Vereen is the more interesting of the two as the Patriots drafted a pair of running backs this year knowing there is a huge hole in their backfield. He will get every chance to step in and get lots of touches. Pierre Thomas on the other hand has had good success but Mark Ingram looks like the real deal in New Orleans. Still Thomas will get touches and can start in a pinch. Finally I land a starting defense will scoring potential in the Chargers.

Rounds 14-18: WR Brian Hartline / QB Kyle Orton / K Billy Cundiff / TE Todd Heap / RB Montario Hardesty

Rounding out my roster, I select Brian Hartline who is on the verge of contributing in a big way in Miami. If Brandon Marshall struggles with mental health issues, Hartline may step in with good numbers. I do not need a backup quarterback for much on this team but Orton can get the job done if needed. Todd Heap is a nice second option at tight end if I need him and Montario Hardesty has as much upside as any 18th round pick I've seen. He was the starter heading into last season but injured himself and now is struggling to get healthy. If he does, he may get more work as the year goes on. Oh and I drafted a kicker. He should be solid.

  • Final thoughts on this roster

Adding to my thoughts after the first nine picks, I am very happy with how the final squad looks. I added three capable running backs that may significantly outperform their draft selection this season and a pair of receivers I really like heading into this season. I see no real weakness here and this squad looks good heading into the season.

Last thoughts on the 10th draft slot in a 14-team league

This is actually a fun place to draft from. If you do not see a running back worthy of the 10th spot in the draft, do not be afraid here to buck that trend. In a point per reception league combined with 6 points for all touchdowns, there are multiple paths to take this team down and most of them can result in a good team with wise decisions as the draft goes on. If possible try to get a quarterback you believe capable of 25+ touchdown passes and as much as possibly in the first couple of rounds, do not lock into a position. Analyze the best players on your board and take the best one. Flesh out the squad rounds three through nine and try to have the starting group in place (1QB, 2RB, 3WR, 1TE). Do that and you'll be in great shape. Best of luck and happy drafting.
