Draft Slots Study - 14 Teams / Pick 1.07
By Chris Smith
August 29th, 2011

Every new NFL season there is much discussion on the positives and the negatives for each of the draft slots in a fantasy football league. While it is possible to win a league no matter where you draft from, it is obvious to veteran fantasy owners that there is some advantage to drafting in certain positions as opposed to others. This series of articles will take an in-depth look at some of the interesting slots in a 14-team league and outline the positives and negatives of each slot. In addition each separate article will showcase a mock draft compiled using the Draft Dominator.

To make things more interesting, I have used a unique turn in scoring as all positions will score 6 points per touchdown. That included touchdown passes from the quarterback position. This will certainly change the strategies throughout the draft.

This particular series is based on...

  • 14-team redraft league / 18-round fantasy draft
  • Must start 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 DEF, 1 K
  • Scoring is as follows:
  • 1 pt every 20 passing yards
  • 1 pt every 10 rushing yards
  • 6 points per passing touchdown
  • 6 points per rushing / receiving touchdown
  • 1 point per reception
  • 3 points per field goal / 1 pt per extra point
  • 2 points per interception, fumble recovery and safety
  • 1 pt per sack
  • 6 points per defensive touchdown
  • This study is performed using the mock draft function within our own Draft Dominator software. The program gives you the ability to draft for one team and have the other teams taken over by computer control using different ADP lists. For the purpose of this study, I will use David Dodds' projections found within the Dominator. The mock draft ability of the Dominator is a nice way to prepare for your fantasy draft. Running the same draft several times will help you to anticipate all possible scenarios when your own draft arrives. Check it out today.

If you would like to see a particular study this season, please send me an e-mail at smith@footballguys.com, and I will do my best to cover your scoring rules, starting lineup requirements, etc. before the end of training camp.

    Onto the article.

    Drafting 7th overall (14-team re-draft)

In the attempt to get through as many studies as possible, I am only highlighting a few areas in this series. The first one I took a look at was the first overall pick. I see six running backs (Adrian Peterson, Chris Johnson, Arian Foster, Jamaal Charles, Ray Rice and LeSean McCoy) that can go within the first six picks and really while the players change from the first study the concept behind the article stays somewhat similar. If there was more time I would do a study from the four-slot as well but we are running out of time here as the season breaths down our necks so I will skip to the 7th pick. This is the first difficult choice to make it you usually start the draft selecting a running back.

The owner drafting 7th definitely has a decision to make here if the first six owners begin the draft with a running back which is often the case. There appears to be a drop here in regards to the next running back available so the wise move would be to buck the trend and look towards the receiver position. However in a 14-team league, starting the draft with a receiver having the 7th pick could prove to be quite tricky. Let's see how it plays out.

Possible strategies to incorporate into your draft

    Examples

    1. League that goes RB heavy in first two rounds: Many leagues out there still feature running backs flying off the board in the first two rounds. If this happens, RB/WR/WR is certainly the play here.

    Possible squad through five rounds

  • RB Mark Ingram 3.07
  • RB Daniel Thomas 4.08
  • WR Andre Johnson 1.07
  • WR Larry Fitzgerald 2.08
  • WR Miles Austin 5.07
  • I took value at receiver in the first and second round, added a third great option in the fifth and have the best receiving core in the league. I also have a pair of rookie running backs capable of big things. The problem is that the talent at running back has disappeared significantly. My third running back, if I select him next round will be a player like Michael Bush or Ronnie Brown. Still in a 14-team league, this foundation looks strong.

    2. League that has more flexibility in first two rounds: If your league has more flexibility in the top include the best quarterbacks and receivers off the board, then a more conventional approach is in order. I can see going RB/RB/RB to begin a draft where a FLEX player starts each week.

    Possible squad through five rounds

  • RB Adrian Peterson 1.07
  • RB Rashard Mendenhall 2.08
  • RB Mark Ingram 3.07
  • WR Miles Austin 4.08
  • WR Mario Manningham 5.07
  • I was shocked at the running backs that were available in the first three rounds when I ran this mock draft. In this scenario, the team is stacked at running back with three young, talented players and a good pair of receivers to boot.

Likely selections in first seven rounds

  • Round 1: RB, possibly WR Andre Johnson if best running backs are off the board
  • Round 2: RB/WR unless exceptional value at QB
  • Round 3: RB/WR unless exceptional value at QB
  • Round 4: RB/WR unless exceptional value at QB
  • Round 5: RB/WR unless great value at QB
  • Round 6: RB/WR/QB
  • Round 7: RB/WR/TE/QB
  • Should have a quarterback and six total running backs and receivers by the end of round seven. If you see exceptional value at tight end, possibly you'll hold off on quarterback or a receiver. With six points per touchdown pass though, you may want to secure the services of a top quarterback sooner rather than later. That will be up to you though.

    Positives of the draft slot

  • Not a long wait between picks (sandwiched between slots in both even and odd rounds)
  • Will either get one of the top running backs or the best receiver on your draft board. Heck you can even look at quarterback getting six points per touchdown pass
  • Negatives of the draft slot

  • May miss out on the top running backs on the board with the 7th pick arrives
  • Difficult to project the picks in both odd and even rounds (easier when you at the top or bottom of draft board
  • Final Draft Table

Breaking down the mock draft from the 7th draft position

    Round 1: WR Andre Johnson

I could go with a running back here and still build a very good fantasy squad. However, sometimes it is a worthwhile venture to buck the norm and go in a different direction. Andre Johnson in a PPR league is a man amongst boys at the receiver position. He'll give me a huge advantage most weeks and I'm delighted to have him here. I also consider going with a quarterback here and that isn't a bad play as well. At six points per touchdown pass, it could really pay off to have a top quarterback. However there are many quarterbacks I like later in the draft and I find the receiver position dries off quicker than the quarterback one. In a 14-team league this does mean I better get 3 running backs in the next 5-6 rounds or it will be difficult to put together a strong running back stable.

Rounds 2/3: RB Mark Ingram / RB LeGarrette Blount

I am very pleased to add Mark Ingram to my team in the 2nd round. Sure that may be a little higher than his ADP indicates but I don't think it is a sure thing he is there in round three and I like him to have a huge rookie campaign. Getting players you believe in is a pretty big part of fantasy football success and I am happy to pick him here. Round three comes and I'm blessed to have a great, young starting running back there for the plucking again. Blount, teaming with Ingram and Johnson gives me a wonderful foundation to begin my draft. I do consider taking Drew Brees here and it is certainly an option. However running backs will dry out in a 14-team league and I like some of the quarterbacks later on in the draft.

Rounds 4/5: RB DeAngelo Williams / WR Marques Colston

When round four comes and I see Williams available, I am a very happy owner. Great to lock up my third consecutive back following my pick of WR Andre Johnson in the first round. Now my running back stable is one of strength and not uncertainty. I pick Colston with my 5th round pick and if healthy, he is a major steal here. However his injury woes are well known and only time will tell if he can get healthy and play a big role on the explosive Saints offense.

Rounds 6/7: WR Chad Ochocinco / TE Jimmy Graham

I add a second talented, yet questionable receiver here in Ochocinco. There are several others I can look at here as well but Ochocinco in New England may be money and worth the risk of a 6th round draft pick. The reason I decided to wait on tight end was the depth at the position this year. I am thrilled to add Graham to my roster.

Rounds 8/9: QB Sam Bradford / QB Kevin Kolb

I had a plan heading into this draft to wait on quarterback as there are many I like in the mid rounds this season. I almost pulled the trigger on Drew Brees earlier on but did not and now I must implement my strategy and grab a pair of quarterbacks with different bye weeks. Both guys are young, talented players that could elevate into top-ten production levels in 2011.

At the halfway point of the draft, our team looks like this...

    Quarterbacks

  • Sam Bradford
  • Kevin Kolb
  • Running Backs

  • Mark Ingram
  • LeGarrette Blount
  • DeAngelo Williams
  • Wide Receivers

  • Andre Johnson
  • Marques Colston
  • Chad Ochocinco
  • Tight Ends

  • Jimmy Graham
  • Place Kickers

  • none
  • Defenses

  • none
  • Through the first nine picks I am very happy with the breakdown of my team. I have a good core at both running back and receiver, a possible stud tight end and a pair of young, talented quarterbacks capable of throwing the ball all over the field. Put it all together and it is a very strong start. I need to stockpiling RB and WR depth in the next several rounds.

Rounds 10-13: WR Jeremy Maclin / RB Shane Vereen / RB Montario Hardesty / WR Steve Breaston

As I work my way through these four rounds, I find a potential steal in Maclin, a young, rookie running back in Vereen capable of 20+ carries per game, another young running back in Hardesty capable of putting up nice numbers if he gets a chance and WR Steve Breaston who could catch 60+ passes for the Chiefs in 2011.

Rounds 14-18: WR Brian Hartline / K Neil Rackers / DEF Buccaneers / RB Stevan Ridley / WR Jerricho Cotchery

These five picks are just to flesh out your roster. I find another pair of receivers in Hartline and Cotchery capable of elevating past their draft position. Hartline has a nice blend of skills while Cotchery has had success before and entering better system. I add a decent kicker and defense and the rookie compliment to my earlier pick Shane Vereen. Both of these running backs have a chance to succeed so it makes sense to hold onto both and see what happens.

  • Final thoughts on this roster

This squad has turned out very well. It is almost impossible in a 14-team league to not feel a little short in an area or two of your roster but actually, breaking down my team, I'm feeling quite confident. I think I have a nice duo at quarterback, three nice fantasy football starting running backs with three running backs with plenty of upside. I also have the best fantasy receiver in Andre Johnson to go with tons of depth. I am confidence my receiver group will score points for me and could be elite depending on how Ochocinco and Colston actually do this season. Add in a great tight end and I'm looking good. Areas of concern are the lack of experience at quarterback, possible questions marks at receiver two and three and no backup tight end / defense. Those are minor concerns that are easily rectified however.

Last thoughts on the 7th draft slot in a 14-team league

Obviously getting the first overall pick is a nice way to begin the draft. However there are several running backs available to begin the draft that I believe can lead the position in fantasy points this year. Because of that, I would rather draft 3rd to 5th slot this season to maximize the talent pool in your second round. That changes however if you have one running back ahead of the others. If that is the case, the value of first overall intensifies. It is an extremely long time between picks in this format so do not fall in love with a particular player. Be patient, look ahead and try determine who will be picked when as much as possible and when you're pick arrives, make the right decisions. Do that and the hardware will be coming your way.
