Draft Slots Study - 14 Teams / Pick 1.01
By Chris Smith
August 18th, 2011

Every new NFL season there is much discussion on the positives and the negatives for each of the draft slots in a fantasy football league. While it is possible to win a league no matter where you draft from, it is obvious to veteran fantasy owners that there is some advantage to drafting in certain positions as opposed to others. This series of articles will take an in-depth look at each of the twelve draft positions in a 12-team, redraft fantasy football league for the 2009 campaign and outline the positives and negatives of each slot. In addition each separate article will showcase a mock draft compiled using the Draft Dominator.

I have switched the format up slightly here for the second series to keep it fresh. In this study, there will be a FLEX player to start (either WR or RB) as well as an extra one point per reception. This will certainly change the strategies throughout the draft.

This particular series is based on...

  • 14-team redraft league / 18-round fantasy draft
  • Must start 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 FLEX (RB/WR), 1 TE, 1 DEF, 1 K
  • Scoring is as follows:
  • 1 pt every 20 passing yards
  • 1 pt every 10 rushing yards
  • 4 points per passing touchdown
  • 6 points per rushing / receiving touchdown
  • 1 point per reception
  • 3 points per field goal / 1 pt per extra point
  • 2 points per interception, fumble recovery and safety
  • 1 pt per sack
  • 6 points per defensive touchdown
  • This study is performed using the mock draft function within our own Draft Dominator software. The program gives you the ability to draft for one team and have the other teams taken over by computer control using different ADP lists. For the purpose of this study, I will use David Dodds' projections found within the Dominator. The mock draft ability of the Dominator is a nice way to prepare for your fantasy draft. Running the same draft several times will help you to anticipate all possible scenarios when your own draft arrives. Check it out today.

If you would like to see a particular study this season, please send me an e-mail at smith@footballguys.com, and I will do my best to cover your scoring rules, starting lineup requirements, etc. before the end of training camp.

    Onto the article.

    Drafting 1st overall (14-team re-draft)

In the attempt to get through as many studies as possible, I am lumping in various draft positions in which the strategy is quick simple. That is the case for this study in which picks five through seven are relatively comparable this season. There are little differences but really when it comes down to the brass tacks, The strategy I communicate here will be doable with all three of these slots.

The challenge with drafting sixth this season is the lack of a clear cut running back to target. Now sure, if Adrian Peterson, Arian Foster or Chris Johnson is available with the 6th pick, this is an easy selection. Even Jamaal Charles should be scooped up without thought if he slips to the six hole. However in reality is not likely that any of those four players will be there when the pick rolls around. So an owner in this draft position has a decision to make. Take a running back as conventional wisdom declares, even if the running back is a definite notch down from those taken in the first four picks or buck the trend and start the draft with a stud quarterback or receiver. I am 100% telling you here that the 2nd option is the correct one. Targeting a 2nd-rate running back with your first pick will not only put you behind the first four owners of the draft but will also hurt your chances against the teams that are drafting in behind you as they WILL scoop up the top talent at other positions.

Start the draft by selecting an elite player, whether it is running back, quarterback or receiver. That is the key to building a strong team.

Possible strategies to incorporate into your draft

    Examples

    1. League that goes RB heavy in first two rounds: Many leagues out there still feature running backs flying off the board in the first two rounds. If this happens, RB/WR/WR is certainly the play here.

    Possible squad through five rounds

  • RB Arian Foster 1.01
  • RB Mark Ingram 3.01
  • RB LeGarrette Blount 4.14
  • WR Mike Wallace 2.14
  • WR Anquan Boldin 5.01
  • Without question, unless absolutely sick quarterback value is on the board (like Aaron Rodgers in the 4th round), it is important to target running backs and receivers through the first six rounds. You will need to start six players at these two positions and the key to a strong draft here is certainly going after value in those spots. Receivers are drying up by the end of the second round and it becomes more tricky to put together a strong receiver core. The 28-pick wait between selections make this extremely difficult to project out so if you feel there is a chance for a position to completely dry out before your next pick you may want to pick up the player even if his value is somewhat questionable (such as an Anquan Boldin).

    2. League that has more flexibility in first two rounds: If your league has more flexibility in the top include the best quarterbacks and receivers off the board, then a more conventional approach is in order. I can see going RB/RB/RB to begin a draft where a FLEX player starts each week.

    Possible squad through five rounds

  • RB Arian Foster 1.01
  • RB Ryan Matthews 2.14
  • RB Mark Ingram 3.01
  • RB LeGarrette Blount 4.14
  • WR Anquan Boldin 5.01
  • In this case, the best available talent is at the receiver position. I have managed to stockpile four good, young running backs here, a great thing in a FLEX league in which I can start three each week. Anquan Boldin is scary as my WR1 although he does have the talent to put up good fantasy numbers. Looking ahead in this scenario, I can add receivers such as Steve Smith of the Panthers, Chad Ochocinco of the Patriots and Roy Williams of the Bears in the 6th and 7th rounds so there is a chance to put together a strong receiving core (although there is a risk it could implode as well). If I go WR/WR in that spot though, the quarterback position is going to dry up.

Likely selections in first seven rounds

  • Round 1: RB
  • Round 2: RB/WR
  • Round 3: RB/WR
  • Round 4: RB/WR unless exceptional value at QB
  • Round 5: RB/WR unless great value at QB
  • Round 6: RB/WR/QB
  • Round 7: RB/WR/TE/QB
  • You should have a quarterback and six total running backs and receivers by the end of round seven. If you see exceptional value at tight end, possibly you'll hold off on quarterback or a receiver.

    Positives of the draft slot

  • Best player on your draft board
  • Back to back picks can always have an impact on the draft
  • Three of the top-25 players on your draft board is a nice thing
  • Negatives of the draft slot

  • Ridiculously long wait between picks can have position completely dry up
  • There are several running backs all capable of leading the league in 2011, giving advantage to owners directly below this pick (earlier 2nd rounder)
  • No easy answer here when to draft your starting quarterback

Breaking down the mock draft from the 1st draft position

    Round 1: RB Arian Foster

Take the best available running back and move on.

Rounds 2/3: WR DeSean Jackson / RB Mark Ingram

In the 1st draft slot of a fourteen team league, tons of talents leaps off the board between your picks. There is nothing you can do about it so relax, have a few sips of your tasty beverage of choice and try not to fall in love with a certain player while waiting for your next turn. In this case I scoop up the top receiver and running back still on my board. Both have some risk this season but have top-ten capability and are nice additions to my team.

Rounds 4/5: WR Anquan Boldin / RB LeGarrette Blount

I am pretty pleased here to add Anquan Boldin as my WR2 in addition to Blount as my RB3... I will be able to use three running backs in most weeks, helping to maximize my possible points. For the first time I considered quarterback here but there is not one that really leaps out of my in this position. I also consider taking a top tight end but the value simply wasn't good enough to pull the trigger.

Rounds 6/7: WR Chad Ochocinco / QB Matt Ryan

Ochocinco is my swing for the fences sixth round pick. If his head is in the game, he is headed to an offense that can put up tons of passing yardage and he has the potential to be outstanding. Due to his quirks however, there is a chance to he ends up a non-factor. Still as a 6th round pick, I can afford to take a risk on him this season. If he pans out as my #3 receiver, this squad will be tough to knock off. Finally I add a quarterback here in Matt Ryan whom I believe I got with good value. I'll gladly take him as my starting quarterback in the seventh round.

Rounds 8/9: WR Lee Evans / TE Zach Miller

I decide to guarantee points at one receiver slot by picking up veteran Lee Evans, formerly of the Bills and currently of the Ravens. He has the ability to put up nice fantasy numbers and he should receive plenty of looks in this offense. He provides nice insurance for Boldin. Next I decide it makes sense to grab my starting tight end. Miller has top-ten potential or better.

At just past the halfway point of the draft, our team looks like this...

    Quarterbacks

  • Matt Ryan
  • Running Backs

  • Arian Foster
  • Mark Ingram
  • LeGarrette Blount
  • Wide Receivers

  • DeSean Jackson
  • Anquan Boldin
  • Chad Ochocinco
  • Lee Evans
  • Tight Ends

  • Zach Miller
  • Place Kickers

  • none
  • Defenses

  • none
  • Rounds 10-13: RB Michael Bush / WR Jordy Nelson / QB Kyle Orton / RB Montario Hardesty

I happy here to draft two young running backs with upside in Bush and Hardesty. I also find a good QB2 for my team and a young receiver in Green Bay that may emerge as a legitimate 2nd option at receiver for the Packers. He is in a battle with Donald Driver for playing time.

Rounds 14-18: WR Donald Driver / DEF Ravens / DEF Chargers / WR Brian Hartline / K Dan Carpenter

I draft Donald Driver here in case Jordy Nelson does not beat out him for the WR2 job. Having both of them should secure nice points at the receiver spot. I also scoop up Brian Hartline who is an improving receiver with the Dolphins. I land a decent kicker and two solid defenses to call it a draft.

    Final Roster (Draft Slot #1)

  • Matt Ryan
  • Kyle Orton
  • Running Backs

  • Arian Foster
  • Mark Ingram
  • LeGarrette Blount
  • Michael Bush
  • Montario Hardesty

  • DeSean Jackson
  • Anquan Boldin
  • Chad Ochocinco
  • Lee Evans
  • Jordy Nelson
  • Donald Driver

  • Dan Carpenter
  • Defenses

  • Baltimore Ravens
  • San Diego Chargers
  • Final thoughts on this roster

This team is definitely set to contend. I love Matt Ryan at quarterback and he was great value in the seventh round. Backup Kyle Orton is capable of filling in where needed. I have five good running backs and seven serviceable receivers. The weakness is probably the receiving position hence the seven picks there throughout the draft. If Boldin and Ochocinco can re-discover past forms, It could become a team strength. Securing both Jordy Nelson and Donald Driver of the Packers as well as Lee Evans and Anquan Boldin of the Ravens should guarantee some nice points from the position. The overall talent top to bottom is very nice including two good defenses.

Last thoughts on the 1st draft slot in a 14-team league

Obviously getting the first overall pick is a nice way to begin the draft. However there are several running backs available to begin the draft that I believe can lead the position in fantasy points this year. Because of that, I would rather draft 3rd to 5th slot this season to maximize the talent pool in your second round. That changes however if you have one running back ahead of the others. If that is the case, the value of first overall intensifies. It is an extremely long time between picks in this format so do not fall in love with a particular player. Be patient, look ahead and try determine who will be picked when as much as possible and when you're pick arrives, make the right decisions. Do that and the hardware will be coming your way.
