Draft Slots Study - 12 Teams / Pick 1.03
By Chris Smith
August 15th, 2011

Every new NFL season there is much discussion on the positives and the negatives for each of the draft slots in a fantasy football league. While it is possible to win a league no matter where you draft from, it is obvious to veteran fantasy owners that there is some advantage to drafting in certain positions as opposed to others. This series of articles will take an in-depth look at different draft positions in a 12-team, redraft fantasy football league for the 2011 campaign and outline the positives and negatives of each slot. In addition each separate article will showcase a mock draft compiled using the Draft Dominator.

After this series is complete, I will try to break down many other styles of leagues (10-team, 14-team, 16-team, 8-team, FLEX options, etc.)

This particular series is based on...

  • 12-team redraft league / 18-round fantasy draft
  • Must start 1 QB, 2 RBs, 3 WRs, 1 TE, 1 PK, 1 Def
  • Scoring is as follows:
  • 1 point every 20 passing yards
  • 1 point every 10 rushing yards
  • 4 points per passing touchdown
  • 6 points per rushing / receiving touchdown
  • 3 points per field goal / 1 point per extra point
  • 2 points per interception, fumble recovery and safety
  • 1 point per sack
  • 6 points per defensive touchdown
  • 10 points per shutout
  • This study is performed using the mock draft function within our own Draft Dominator software. The program gives you the ability to draft for one team and have the other teams taken over by computer control using different ADP lists. For the purpose of this study, I will use David Dodds' projections found within the Dominator. The mock draft ability of the Dominator is a nice way to prepare for your fantasy draft. Running the same draft several times will help you to anticipate all possible scenarios when your own draft arrives. Check it out today.

If you would like to see a particular study this season, please send me an e-mail at smith@footballguys.com, and I will do my best to cover your scoring rules, starting lineup requirements, etc. before the end of training camp.

    Onto the article.

    Drafting 3rd overall (12-team re-draft)

Due to the constraints of time heading into the preseason games, I will be selecting certain draft slots to break down this year. The reality is this season that the 2nd, 3rd and 4th draft positions are all quite similar this year. There are four running backs to target with the first four picks, you take whichever one is available and then allow the draft to come to you. The difference is determining which players to take when the next picks come. There is a long wait between the odd and even round selections so you'll sit back, cross the players off the board and wait for your turn. When that pick comes however, it is very doable to predict what the picks will be behind your selection. It is critical to take a little time to analyze what your opponent will likely do and which players will fall to you. That is the difference between the 2nd, 3rd and 4th slots is simply reading the picks. I split the difference here and I will breakdown the 3rd draft slot.

Drafting third is a wonderful place to be in 2011. You will get one of these three players (Arian Foster, Adrian Peterson, Chris Johnson) and each of them has a terrific shot of being the top fantasy performer of this season. Sitting back and waiting here is nice because you'll get first dibs on the 2nd round player while these owners wait behind your selection. You also get to analyze what they are likely to do and with wise decisions can pull away from the 1st and 2nd slot owners by the end of the draft.

Possible strategies to incorporate into your draft

The first pick is always the same in standard scoring leagues. Take the top running back on your board. After that you need to target the best player on your board over the next few rounds regardless of position in order to dominate your opponents.

    Examples

    1. League that goes RB heavy in first two rounds: Many leagues out there still feature running backs flying off the board in the first two rounds. If this happens, RB/WR/WR is certainly the play here.

    Possible squad through five rounds

  • QB Michael Vick - 2.10
  • RB Adrian Peterson - 1.03
  • RB DeAngelo Williams - 5.10
  • WR Vincent Jackson - 3.03
  • TE Antonio Gates - 4.10
  • I drafted a quarterback and a tight end here to show that you can buck the norm and still put together a wonderful foundation. Here I have a top running back, receiver, tight end and quarterback all as the cornerstone of my team. Add a capable running back in DeAngelo Williams to start for my team and the sky is the limit.

    2. League that has more flexibility in first two rounds: If your league has more flexibility in the top include the best quarterbacks and receivers off the board, then a more conventional approach is in order. I can see going RB/RB/RB to begin a draft where a FLEX player starts each week.

    Possible squad through five rounds

  • RB Adrian Peterson - 1.03
  • RB Michael Turner - 2.10
  • WR Larry Fitzgerald - 3.03
  • WR Marques Colston - 5.03
  • TE Antonio Gates - 4.10
  • In this example, the top quarterbacks and receivers are off the board in round two. I pick up a nice 2nd starter at running back and then fall into nice players at receiver and tight end with Larry Fitzgerald, Antonio Gates and Marques Colston all available for value. I haven't taken a quarterback here which means round seven and almost certainly Matt Ryan. The two owners behind me already have their quarterback so I can pick a RB or WR in round six and still go quarterback the next round.

    Positives of the draft slot

  • You secure one of the top three running back talents
  • You get the early pick in the 2nd round over the 1st and 2nd slot guys
  • Can really get a good read on what those two owners will do behind you
  • Negatives of the draft slot

  • Long time between picks (odd rounds to even rounds)
  • Guessing wrong on you believe slots 1 and 2 owners will draft can be disastrous

Breaking down the mock draft from the 3rd draft position

Round 1: RB Adrian Peterson, Vikings

Drafting 3rd overall this season is a wonderful place to be. No matter who is picked in front of you, a great running back will be there to pick up. Peterson is an elite fantasy weapon and starting with his is a perfect beginning to the draft.

Rounds 2/3: WR Vincent Jackson, Chargers / WR Larry Fitzgerald, Cardinals

Going into the draft, I figured I would probably two RB / WR / RB to begin the draft. Much like I had imagined, receiver is definitely the direction I am going with my second pick. There isn't great running back talent available and getting an elite receiver on the squad is a great decision here. When my third round pick rolls around, again I find myself staring at a receiver on the draft board. Having an elite running back already on board makes this pick an easy one. I scoop up Fitzgerald and talk some smack with my league mates for allowing me to start with three fantasy gems.

Rounds 4/5: RB LeGarrette Blount, Buccaneers / TE Antonio Gates, Chargers

I know I have to pickup a running back with the fourth round pick and having Blount sitting there for myself makes this an easy pick. I scoop him up without another thought and now have a strong running back tandem to go along with my superb receiver dual. I plan on picking up a running back in round five but I cannot ignore the fantasy value of Gates in the 5th round. He gives me yet another advantage most weeks over my opponents.

Rounds 6/7: RB Brandon Jacobs, Giants / WR Chad Ochocinco, Patriots

Without question, I have to target at least one running back here. I am also looking to secure my third starting receiver. Having Jacobs available in the 6th round is a nice surprise. He is sharing time but will be a valuable back up for my running back stable, capable of filling in where needed. I feel really blessed to secure WR Chad Ochocinco with my 7th round pick. He teams with my first two receivers to give me the finest trio at receiver in the league. Without question, I consider quarterback here but I see several guys I wouldn't mind playing quarterback for my team and decide to roll the dice and wait it out to see what happens.

Rounds 8/9: Sam Bradford, Rams / WR Pierre Garcon, Colts

Waiting on quarterback works out just fine as Bradford is a 2nd year quarterback with tons of upside. He could emerge as a fantasy star this season. I think about scooping up a fourth running back here but nothing leaps out at me as fantasy value so I hold off.

At the halfway point of the draft, our team looks like this...

    Quarterbacks

  • Sam Bradford, Rams
  • Running Backs

  • Adrian Peterson, Vikings
  • LeGarrette Blount, Buccaneers
  • Brandon Jacobs, Giants
  • Wide Receivers

  • Vincent Jackson, Chargers
  • Larry Fitzgerald, Cardinals
  • Chad Ochocinco, Patriots
  • Pierre Garcon, Colts
  • Tight Ends

  • Antonio Gates, Chargers
  • Place Kickers

  • none
  • Defenses

  • none
  • I have to admit, I am very pleased with myself after the first nine selections. I have one of the top running backs in the game and two other decent options at the position. Blount has the potential to elevate his fantasy worth this season. At receiver I am blessed with a trio of possible top-ten receivers and a fourth option in Pierre Garcon who has Peyton Manning chucking him the rock. Can't beat that to begin a draft. To add to the gluttony of riches, Antonio Gates gives me the top receiving tight end in the NFL. When healthy, he cannot be stopped. Quarterback is a little scary with Bradford but he'll be better in year two and the Rams have receiving depth to get the ball to. I am in good shape and need to address running back depth in the rounds ahead.

Rounds 10-13: QB Kevin Kolb, Cardinals / RB Delone Carter, Colts / WR Braylon Edwards / RB Bernard Scott

I am thrilled when my 10th round pick arrives to add Kolb to my roster. He will become a tandem fantasy quarterback with Sam Bradford and Kolb may get the majority of the starts despite being drafted later onto my team. Playing the matchups is a nice way to maximize fantasy points at the quarterback spot. Adding Delone Carter in the 11th round gives me an interesting fantasy prospect at this point in the draft. He may emerge as the top dog for the Colts and at worst, provides some depth for my team. I cannot ignore the potential of Braylon Edwards and he may emerge as trade bait for my team if he becomes the go to guy in San Francisco. I am very pleased to add Bernard Scott with my 13th round pick. He has the potential to emerge as the man for the Bengals this year and at worst should see more action in 2011.

Rounds 14-18: Ravens Defense / RB Montario Hardesty / K Mason Crosby / WR Terrell Owens / 49ers Defense

To round out my team, I land two serviceable defenses and a kicker with these picks. All three of these selections should be decent fantasy options this year. I land a 6th running back with potential in Montario Hardesty. Hardesty has a lot of upside for a 15th round pick. I take a flyer on Terrell Owens in the 17th round. Why not really? My team is stacked and he becomes excellent trade bait if he signs on in the right situation. If not, he becomes the player I released when I make my first free agent move of the season.

  • Final thoughts on this roster

This team is in excellent shape to make a run at the title. While not an elite quarterback group, the pair of Kolb and Bradford gives me two young stars to play the matchup game each week. The combination of the two should give me a strong fantasy showing at the position. Running back may be my biggest worry due to some of the question marks in my depth area. Adrian Peterson will help to mask some of those areas and LeGarrette Blount will be a decent 2nd option but after that there are some question marks in my four backups. Still the upside of that particular group is pretty high as well. I am stacked at receiver and if Edwards / Owens pans out, I will have plenty of opportunities for trades during the season. I have the best starting group in the league and along with Antonio Gates I am in good shape. All in all, this team is poised for a real run at the title.

Last thoughts on the 3rd draft slot in a 12-team league

Drafting 3rd this year is a good spot to be in. You will land a top running back, giving you enough flexibility in the next few rounds to pick up the best available talent and really hit the ball out of the park. Do not be afraid to start a draft RB / WR /WR or even RB / QB / WR if the best player available fits that direction. You will have a foundation that will be the envy of your league and you will be on the way to being a champion. Just draft for value in the first few rounds and then adjust your strategy going forward. You will know the right time to take those backup running back, receivers and starting quarterback depending on the owners in your league and direction the draft takes. Read what is happening and draft accordingly. Good luck and happy drafting!
