Draft Slots Study - 12 Teams / Pick 1.01
By Chris Smith
August 7th, 2011

Every new NFL season there is much discussion on the positives and the negatives for each of the draft slots in a fantasy football league. While it is possible to win a league no matter where you draft from, it is obvious to veteran fantasy owners that there is some advantage to drafting in certain positions as opposed to others. This series of articles will take an in-depth look at each of the twelve draft positions in a 12-team, redraft fantasy football league for the 2011 campaign and outline the positives and negatives of each slot. In addition each separate article will showcase a mock draft compiled using the Draft Dominator.

After this series is complete, I will try to break down many other styles of leagues (10-team, 14-team, 16-team, 8-team, FLEX options, etc.)

This particular series is based on...

  • 12-team redraft league / 18-round fantasy draft
  • Must start 1 QB, 2 RBs, 3 WRs, 1 TE, 1 PK, 1 Def
  • Scoring is as follows:
  • 1 point every 20 passing yards
  • 1 point every 10 rushing yards
  • 4 points per passing touchdown
  • 6 points per rushing / receiving touchdown
  • 3 points per field goal / 1 point per extra point
  • 2 points per interception, fumble recovery and safety
  • 1 point per sack
  • 6 points per defensive touchdown
  • 10 points per shutout
  • This study is performed using the mock draft function within our own Draft Dominator software. The program gives you the ability to draft for one team and have the other teams taken over by computer control using different ADP lists. For the purpose of this study, I will use David Dodds' projections found within the Dominator. The mock draft ability of the Dominator is a nice way to prepare for your fantasy draft. Running the same draft several times will help you to anticipate all possible scenarios when your own draft arrives. Check it out today.

If you would like to see a particular study this season, please send me an e-mail at smith@footballguys.com, and I will do my best to cover your scoring rules, starting lineup requirements, etc. before the end of training camp.

    Onto the article.

    Drafting 1st overall (12-team re-draft)

Drafting first overall is always a nice luxury. You have the benefit of starting the draft with your top running back and then you can draft for value in the following rounds. Don't lock onto a position within the first five rounds, instead try and target the best player on your board. It is perfectly acceptable to begin your draft RB/WR/WR/WR or RB/WR/WR/QB etc. if the talent left on the board justifies it. Don't over think things at the beginning of the draft and definitely never reach for a position. If running backs are going off of the board fast and furious, it will make perfect sense to go WR/WR in rounds two and three.

Possible strategies to incorporate into your draft

The first pick is always the same in standard scoring leagues. Take the top running back on your board. After that you need to target the best player on your board over the next few rounds regardless of position in order to dominate your opponents.

    Examples

    1. League that goes RB heavy in first two rounds: Many leagues out there still feature running backs flying off the board in the first two rounds. If this happens, RB/WR/WR is certainly the play here.

    Possible squad through five rounds

  • QB Drew Brees - 3.01
  • RB Arian Foster - 1.01
  • RB DeAngelo Williams - 4.12
  • WR Roddy White - 2.12
  • WR Jeremy Maclin - 5.01
  • Picking the top player regardless of position here created a really nice looking squad. A top quarterback, the best running back on your board, a decent 2nd option at running back and two outstanding receivers give you a leg up on your opposition. It even makes sense if available to have a three receiver monster on the roster after five rounds if exceptional value presents itself. Remember it is alright to leave yourself a little bare in regards to the running back position to be dominant elsewhere. If you do follow that strategy however keep no more than five receivers on your team and load up at the running back position on the mid-rounds, looking for players that could elevate in this season.

    2. League that has more flexibility in first two rounds: If your league has more flexibility in the top include the best quarterbacks and receivers off the board, then a more conventional approach is in order. I can see going RB/RB/RB to begin a draft where a FLEX player starts each week.

    Possible squad through five rounds

  • RB Chris Johnson, 1.01
  • RB DeAngelo Williams, 2.12
  • RB Chris Wells, 3.01
  • WR Anquan Boldin, 4.12
  • WR Michael Crabtree, 5.01
  • Having great running backs available at the turn (round two and round three) is impossible to ignore. Starting the draft RB/RB/RB will give you plenty of depth and talent at the most critical spot on your fantasy roster. If I do follow this strategy however, I WILL not take a quarterback until round seven as it will be important to find some talented receivers in rounds four through six to round out the roster. Following this through to the next two picks, I can land QB Matt Ryan and then have a choice between rookie RB Daniel Thomas to finalize a dominating backfield or go with A.J. Green or Julio Jones as my WR3.

    Positives of the draft slot

  • Top RB on your draft board
  • Back-to-back picks really allows you to dictate direction of the draft
  • Negatives of the draft slot

  • Long time between picks can empty a position out if you draft poorly
  • Final Draft Table

Breaking down the mock draft from the 1st draft position

    Round 1: RB Arian Foster

Simply take the best running back on your draft list. Using the projections from David Dodds, Foster is the player to scoop up here.

Rounds 2/3: RB Shonn Greene / WR Larry Fitzgerald

Love having these two players available. Green is capable of 300 carries running behind one of the best run blocking offensive lines in football. He is a super RB2 in fantasy circles. Larry Fitzgerald being available here is criminal. He is a clear cut WR1 and gives me an excellent foundation to begin my draft.

Rounds 4/5: WR Jeremy Maclin / WR Marques Colston

There are so many different ways you can take these picks. I can scoop up a great RB3 in DeAngelo Williams, a good starting QB such as Matt Schaub or a top tight end like Vernon Davis. However this league starts three receivers and getting two strong starting receivers to join with my excellent WR1 is a great move. Now I have a starting five that will be very tough to beat most weeks. Obviously I am going to need to target a quarterback soon before the well dries up and I need to take a flyer on one. However I am very happy with how this team is shaping up. Looking ahead to my next two picks, I am thinking quarterback almost 100% for sure and then RB or TE depending on how is available.

Rounds 6/7: RB Daniel Thomas / QB Matt Ryan

Well it has worked out wonderfully well as I have two great players available to draft here. Matt Ryan is at worse a good fantasy option in 2011 but he has the potential to elevate this season with elite weapons to get the ball to. Daniel Thomas will get tons of carries and is a valuable backup running back for my team. Looking forward, I need a starting tight end and more depth at receiver. We will see what the draft brings.

Rounds 8/9: WR Chad Ochocinco / WR Mike Sims-Walker

I cannot be happier here. I definitely think about going TE but I see a number of players I like at the position and feel pretty confident one of them will drop to my next spot. Landing two receivers capable of putting up 1200 yard receiving seasons in rounds eight and nine is criminal. I may have put together the strongest receiving group in the league to go along with three excellent running back talents. I have to draft my tight end with the next pick.

At the halfway point of the draft, our team looks like this...

    Quarterbacks

  • Matt Ryan
  • Running Backs

  • Arian Foster
  • Shonn Greene
  • Daniel Thomas
  • Wide Receivers

  • Larry Fitzgerald
  • Jeremy Maclin
  • Marques Colston
  • Chad Ochocinco
  • Mike Sims-Walker
  • Tight Ends

  • none
  • Place Kickers

  • none
  • Defenses

  • none
  • What can I say about this start? I am very happy with the first nine rounds. A great starting duo at running back, a capable fantasy quarterback and an incredibly deep receiving core means I am in excellent shape to win a title. Areas of concern is no starting tight end on the roster as of yet and minimal running back depth through nine rounds. I will need to remedy those areas in the rounds ahead.

Rounds 10-13: QB Kevin Kolb / TE Kellen Winslow / RB Ronnie Brown / RB Bernard Scott

These four picks cannot go any better for me. Kolb has elite fantasy potential and may be a starter for my team on many weeks. Scooping him will allow me to play the matchups to see if he or Ryan should start. Kellen Winslow isn't an elite fantasy tight end in all likelihood but he is capable of starting and scoring points for my team. I am happy to find two running back options that can put up nice fantasy numbers if given a chance. All I can ask in the mid-rounds is that.

Rounds 14-18: WR Steve Breaston / DEF Chargers / RB Marion Barber / DEF Falcons / K Rob Bironas

Flesh out my roster here. I start with a sixth receiver in Breaston with nice upside, scoop two defenses with good potential to put up points, a sixth running back in Marion Barber and a kicker with my final pick.

  • Final thoughts on this roster

This roster is poised to win a title this season. Two good options at quarterback will allow me to play the matchup game. I have a great starting duo at running back and then four running backs capable of contributing to my team. My receiving core is absolutely stacked with elite talent. The best group in the entire league. I have a good starting tight end, two capable defenses and a kicker. Everything came up roses. My only 'rewind' moment I wish I could use was to pick Montario Hardesty instead of Breaston. I have elite receiver talent on my team and could have scooped up another running back.

Last thoughts on the 1st draft slot in a 12-team league

Drafting first overall is a lot of fun. You get the top player on your draft board and then can really influence a draft with the back to back picks. It is really critical to grab the best player on your board in the first five rounds and then try to look ahead and determine which players will be available in rounds six through thirteen. Draft wisely and you will put together a monster team with this draft slot in 2011. Good luck and happy drafting!
