As you know, the NFL has locked out the players and both sides are currently letting their lawyers do most of the talking. While we do not believe the lockout will impact games this season, free agency has certainly been affected. Normally, we would be over a month deep into free agency, and you'd be reading about what to expect from players in new places. Obviously, with no player movement, there isn't anyone in a new place, so we really can't tell you what to expect. However, rather than sit around waiting for the lockout to end, we decided to be a little predictive.
Below, you'll see a list of probable free agents (and some players that are signed but probably won't be with their current employers). For most of the major names, we've commented on their status and even named some possible destinations.
A note about the comments we have made on the number of years some players have in the league. Last season, any player with six or fewer years in the league was a restricted free agent. If the courts break the lockout, it is speculated that the 2011 season would be played under last year's rules. However, most analysts project that a new agreement between the NFL and the players would move the cut-off back to four years of service. This is obviously beneficial to the players as they could more quickly be on the open market.
Also, a note about the tenders teams have placed on some players. If operating under 2010 rules (or something similar), the offers would be valid. For example, a first round tender would mean another team would owe a first round pick if they were to sign that player. However, if the rules change the years of service requirement, those tenders could be meaningless. However, they are still noteworthy as they indicate how a team has prioritized their potential free agents. For example, a player with a first round tender has been valued at a higher level than a player tagged with a second round tender. If both players were to become unrestricted free agents (under a new agreement), then it stands to reason that their team would fight harder to retain the first round guy.
