Player Round Table (Joseph Addai)

Here at Footballguys.com, we have Spotlights and Faceoffs. Those features are fairly comprehensive, but they are limited to viewpoints from either one or two writers. Well some players need a little more commentary. We have decided open up the dialog and asked our staff to leave their thoughts on these players and what is expected from them in 2010. Here, discussion centers around RB Joseph Addai.

Sigmund Bloom: Addai appears to represent good value: he is coming off his third top 12 finish in four seasons, and is available as an RB2 in the fourth round. The problem is that there is a decent bit of uncertainty in his worth this season based on the presence of 2009 first-round pick Donald Brown. Even though Brown struggled with injuries last year, there was still clear evidence that he has more big play potential than Addai, and he is a more physical runner than Addai. In the five games before Brown got banged up, Addai had 88 touches to Brown's 51, and that balance should only shift closer to 50-50 this season. Addai is also in the last year of his contract, and the Colts need to see if Brown can be counted on to be a lead back, which gives them more incentive to split the workload more evenly. Brown is also a hard worker and exactly the kind of player who should improve greatly from year one to year two. If Addai falls to the 5th or 6th and you can draft him as an RB3, then he is worth a look, but the risk is a little too high for my tastes as an RB2 in the 4th.

Jeff Pasquino: I will admit that I was never a huge fan of Addai - he seems to me to be more of a good running back in a great situation rather than the other way around - but there are many very realistic scenarios under which Addai will be a mediocre fantasy RB at best in 2010. Addai's contract is up at the end of this year, and with Indianapolis looking to throw big money at Peyton Manning before 2011, Bill Polian and the rest of the Colts will look hard at Donald Brown to see if he is ready to take on a bigger role next year - or sooner. Indianapolis has to find out if Brown can be its RB of the future, and that could easily mean more touches for Brown and fewer for Addai this year. Addai's numbers have been slipping since 2008, and despite his large touchdown totals, there is room for improvement in the Colts' backfield. I expect Brown to get at least 40% of the carries this year and that might also be more weighted towards the back end of the season, ruining Addai's December fantasy value. While I understand those who might want to grab Addai at his current ADP of RB20, I see a much lower floor for Addai's value with a decent chance that he becomes nearly worthless at the most crucial fantasy time of the year in December. I would look elsewhere for a RB2.

Jeff Haseley: Jeff and Sigmund, you bring up some good points, but don't forget Addai will be playing for a new contract this year, likely with a different team. From what I saw of Donald Brown (before he was injured), he struggled to get good penetration on the majority of his runs. When he did make big plays, it was more a result of catching the defense off guard - in other words, any RB would've done the same thing. Maybe I'm wrong about Brown, but I think Addai is a much better talent, especially as a receiver. His ability as a receiver and as a pass-blocker will keep him on the field in passing situations. As of now, Brown has underperformed and he's one injury away from being labeled injury-prone. In order for Brown to supplant Addai, he will have to be a more consistent runner, who can make plays and push the pile when defenses are expecting it. As of right now, the better man for that job is still Addai.

Maurile Tremblay: Addai lacks sex appeal because his upside potential is limited by the presence of Donald Brown, but he's a solid RB2 candidate who is being drafted half a round later than he should be, in my opinion. He is the lead RB in one of the more potent offenses in the NFL, and in PPR leagues he can be a beast. You don't always have to swing for the fences in fantasy football. A solid RB2 can be quite valuable even if he lacks strong top-10 fantasy potential. I think there's almost no chance that Addai will be rendered useless by Donald Brown. Addai is a terrific athlete who knows the Colts' offense inside and out. He was a first-round NFL draft pick just like Brown was; he's never been a bust; and it's not like he's over the hill yet. The Colts will continue to use him plenty.
