Player Round Table (Jermichael Finley)

Here at Footballguys.com, we have Spotlights and Faceoffs. Those features are fairly comprehensive, but they are limited to viewpoints from either one or two writers. Some players need a little more commentary. We have opened up the dialog and asked our staff to leave their thoughts on these players and what is expected from them in 2010. Here, discussion centers around TE Jermichael Finley.

Sigmund Bloom: Finley's continuing knee tendonitis dating back to an injury he suffered during the '09 season is worrisome. Yes, he became the apple of Aaron Rodgers' eye as the season went on, and he could finish as the #1 fantasy TE in that offense with that skillset (he's only 23!). The problem is that he isn't really a great value going only a round or two after established studs like Antonio Gates, Dallas Clark and Jason Witten, and going before stalwart stud Tony Gonzalez, and Brent Celek, who arguably has just as much upside as Finley this year. The talent and situation makes him a tantalizing pick, but being risk-averse is probably the best bet when it comes to drafting Finley this year.

Will Grant: I love what Finley brings to the table both as an NFL tight end and as a fantasy tight end. But Bloom's right: The secret is out of the bag with Finley. People know his skill and potential. He's not going to bring super value in the draft, and as Bloom points out, the injury history is cause for concern. His ADP has him going in the late 5th, early 6th round. Probably about right for his skills. To echo what Bloom points out though, Brent Celek has bigger potential/upside and his ADP is about the same. I think, given the choice of Finley or Celek, I'd take Celek.

Mark Wimer: I am the guy least enthused about Finley among the staffers this year, going by our rankings.

Part of my reluctance to slot Finley higher is due to his short track record - he really came on strong during the final weeks of 2009, with four of his five TDs occurring in weeks 13-17, but wasn't a very exciting fantasy player for the bulk of the 2009 season.

Finley has yet to appear in a full slate of 16 games during his career. (Sigmund already highlighted his knee issue from last year.)

In short, there are many proven options with better track records than Finley available at TE this year (Tony Gonzalez, Brent Celek, Kellen Winslow, Visanthe Shiancoe). I'm much more likely to roll with Celek, Shiancoe or Gonzalez than Finley if I have to choose between the four during any given fantasy draft this season. Celek, for example, has never missed a game over three NFL seasons and had 5 or more targets in 16 out of 17 games played last year (including post season).

Maurile Tremblay: Finley is a stud, but I'm disappointed that his ADP is so high. I still think he's a good deal at his ADP of TE5, but I was really hoping the fantasy masses would underrate him a bit more than that. I can't agree with Will about Brent Celek having a higher upside than Finley.

Andy Hicks: It seems like almost every draft will have a "Must have Jermichael Finley" guy.

I do like Jermichael Finley, yes his upside is high, yes he is a talented receiving tight end, but let's look at some of the areas that concern me: (1) He missed 3 games with a knee injury and had problems recently with, you guessed it, his knee. (2) Despite being very impressive when he was on the field, he still failed to finish as a TE1 in 12-team fantasy leagues. If I'm drafting a guy in the first 5 or 6 rounds, I generally want him to have been there and done it. (3) Most elite fantasy tight ends are either option one, two, or three in their team's offensive plan. Finley has Greg Jennings, Donald Driver and Ryan Grant definitely seeing the ball more than him, and James Jones and Donald Lee weren't far behind last year, either. Jordy Nelson also shows signs of being able to take a larger workload. (4) Another area of concern is his maturity - numerous times missing a curfew, numerous agent changes, etc. Not a huge deal, but still on the negative side of the ledger.

I need to see more sustained production from Finley before I draft him at his current ADP. If he drops to TE7 however, then sign me up.

Jeff Pasquino: Finley has gone from dynasty sleeper last year to over-hyped second-year tight end in a hurry. Sure he's good, but the fifth tight end? How can you take him above a Dallas Clark, Jason Witten or an Antonio Gates? Even Vernon Davis is more of a sure thing than Mr. Finley. For me, he's a bit more hype than substance right now, and I'll likely look elsewhere for my starting TE. I don't see a ton of upside for him at TE5.
