Fool's Gold - Week 7
Posted 10/21 by Clayton Gray, Exclusive for Footballguys.com
Greetings, Footballguys, and welcome back to another season of gold digging! Wait, that sounds bad, doesn't it? Because we all know this column has much more to do with football than marrying some rich old dude. For now. But hey, if you want to become one of those old rich dudes by playing fantasy football, I wouldn't bank too heavily on any of these surprising results from Week 6.
QB Tom Brady - NE
Fool's Gold: throwing six touchdowns on a snow-covered field
This is a no-brainer - there's no way it will snow in Tampa. Six scores might though - it is the Buccaneers, you know.
RB Thomas Jones - NYJ
Fool's Gold: 22 carries for 210 yards and 1 score
While he has been fairly solid scoring the ball this year (only two games this season without a touchdown), Thomas Jones' 210 rushing yards are quite the anomaly. Before crushing the Bills in Week 7, Jones has failed to pass the 55-yard mark in the four games prior. He might find some success against the terrible Raiders rush defense, but he is not going to be a consistent threat.
WR Robert Meachem - NO, WR Lance Moore - NO
Fool's Gold: combining on 8 catches for 148 yards and 2 scores
Everything went right for the Saints offense in Week 6. While Robert Meachem and Lance Moore will certain have more good outings this season, it is completely unreasonable to think you can count on either as a consistent fantasy option right now. There are simply too many weapons available for Drew Brees, and he has the ability to find the open guy. The open guys were Meachem and Moore against the Giants, but it could easily be Devery Henderson and Jeremy Shockey in Week 7.
RB Lawrence Vickers - Cle
Fool's Gold: 1 catch for 1 yard and 1 score
Break up Lawrence Vickers!! The sad thing here is that Vickers was actually picked up in one of my leagues.
WR Steve Smith - Car
Fool's Gold: 1 catch for 4 yards on 5 targets
Granted, the Panthers are a run-first team, but Steve Smith is far too talented to completely ignore. He is only three games removed from a huge 15-target, 8-catch, 131-yard effort, so we know he is capable of being a viable fantasy option this season. However, the reason he is on this list is his words from a early in the week where he claimed he was "no longer an asset to this team". While that has been the case lately, he is obviously playing the role of the squeaky wheel. Most often, when a star athlete makes statements like this, he has a nice showing in the following game.
RB Cadillac Williams - TB
Fool's Gold: 16 carries for 77 yards and 1 score
Cadillac Williams has defined streakiness this season. So far, he has had three games with more than 75 rushing yards and three games with fewer than 10 rushing yards. He has yet to post back-to-back games with good ground games, and it won't happen this week with the Patriots next on the schedule.
TD New York Giants
Fool's Gold: this group being terrible
Sure, the Giants defense could do no right in Week 6 as Drew Brees and Co. were allowed to do anything they wanted. The Saints ended the game with 493 yards of offense, no turnovers, and a single sack allowed. Well, that buzzsaw is in the rearview mirror, and the Giants defense will bounce back. Of course, there are issues in the secondary and injury woes, but this proud group will turn in good showings in the coming weeks.
