Week 2 Game Recap: Seattle Seahawks 10, San Francisco 49ers 23

Seattle Seahawks

QB Seneca Wallace, Pass: 15 - 23 - 127 - 1 TD / 1 INT, Rush: 4 - 1 - 0

The injury to starter Matt Hasselbeck meant that Seneca Wallace played Sunday and played quite well.  He completed 15 of 23 passes for 127 yards to go with one touchdown and one interception.  His first pass was a touchdown to Julius Jones. Wallace passed a lot in the 2nd half as the Seahawks were trailing. He had a snap go over his head to kill one drive and his interception was on a deflection when he tried to force a pass to Nate Burleson.

QB Matt Hasselbeck, Pass: 10 - 18 - 97 - 0 TD / 0 INT, Rush: 3 - 12 - 0

Hasselbeck was injured on Sunday when he cracked a rib in the 2nd quarter. He was briefly admitted to the hospital. Initial reports said X-rays were negative but today (Monday) brought reports of the fracture. There is some concern that he may miss a game or two.  What's worse, Hasselbeck was inefficient before the injury completing 10 or 18 passes for a pedestrian 97 yards.  The Seattle offense does not appear to be as strong as expected, at least not yet.

RB Julius Jones, Rush: 8 - 11 - 0, Rec: 3 - -2 - 1 (3 targets)

Jones had 8 carries for 11 yards and was fairly ineffective on the ground.  He did add a touchdown on a pass from Seneca Wallace at the goalline, one of three receptions, but does not appear consistent enough to be counted on each week.  The emergence of Justin Forsett (5 carries) and Edgerrin James (2 carries) may keep Julius Jones' value suppressed throughout the season, even if Seattle can fix its offensive woes.

RB Justin Forsett, Rush: 5 - 35 - 0, Rec: 6 - 57 - 0 (6 targets)

Forsett gained 35 yards on 5 carries and had 6 receptions for 57 yards in Sunday's loss to the 49ers.  If Julius Jones isn't able to carry the load by himself -- and it appears he isn't -- then Forsett is the likely beneficiary.  Forsett displayed excellent vision, particularly in the passing game, and even showed improvement as a pass-blocker against San Fransisco.

WR Nate Burleson, Rec: 4 - 46 - 0 (10 targets)

Burleson had 4 receptions for 46 yards on Sunday and appears to solidly be the Seahawks second option among receivers.  Impacting his production, however, is the Seahawks use of running backs and tight ends in the passing game.  His low yards per catch were a result of not being sent on deep routes once Seneca Wallace entered the game. Burleson had a team-high 10 targets in he passing game (to go with 11 targets in week 1).

WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Rec: 4 - 62 - 0 (9 targets)

Houshmanzadeh had 4 receptions for 62 yards on Sunday and should continue seeing plenty of targets regardless of who is under center.  Houshmanzadeh had 9 targets in the passing game. His long reception was for 22 yards.

WR Deon Butler, Rec: 1 - 15 - 0 (1 targets)

Despite the preseason excitement surrounding Butler, he appears to have a way to go before being a consistent fantasy threat.  Butler caught one ball for 15 yards on Sunday.  Butler only had one target against the 49ers.

TE John Carlson, Rec: 6 - 46 - 0 (8 targets)

Carlson had 6 receptions for 46 yards and was targeted often by both Matt Hasselbeck and Seneca Wallace.  For the season he has 12 receptions for 141 yards and two touchdowns.  Carlson had 8 targets in the passing game and contributed significantly as a run blocker in the first half.

San Francisco 49ers

QB Shaun Hill, Pass: 19 - 26 - 144 - 0 TD / 0 INT, Rush: 1 - 17 - 0

Hill was efficient in the 49ers victory but did not throw a touchdown pass.  The San Francisco offense appears to run through Frank Gore more then through the passing game.  Hill completed 19 of 26 passes for a very efficient 144 yards.  His low yards per attempt was more of a result of the success of the run game and the fact that they will rely on his passing more for short, drive-extending tosses instead of deeper, game-breaking throws.  Hill appears locked in as the 49ers starting quarterback after a strong start where he has limited turnovers and kept drives alive.

RB Frank Gore, Rush: 16 - 207 - 2, Rec: 5 - 39 - 0 (5 targets)

Frank Gore had another monster game, totaling 246 yards from scrimmage with two long touchdown runs of 79 yards and 80 yards.  The 49ers appear committed to letting Gore serve as their bell-cow and as long as he stays healthy, he should be in for a great season. Gore had 5 targets in the passing game. On both long touchdown runs (including one up the middle) Gore was untouched on his way to scoring. He did suffer an sprained ankle in the second half. It probably won't keep him out of the showdown with Adrian Peterson next week, but it might limit his effectiveness.

RB Glen Coffee, Rush: 9 - 13 - 0, Rec: 2 - 16 - 0 (2 targets)

Coffee would have gotten a chance to show more in this game, but he missed a lot of the second half with a hip pointer. He wasn't impressive at all in the first half, and it looks like he is not going to live up to his preseason hype. Frank Gore's ankle injury reminded Gore's owners of Coffee's value to them.

WR Isaac Bruce, Rec: 4 - 35 - 0 (8 targets)

Bruce had 4 receptions for 35 yards on Sunday.  The team's offense took very few chances downfield as they didn't have to against the Seattle.  Bruce had 8 targets against the Seahawks (the same as last week).

WR Josh Morgan

Josh Morgan did not register a catch but was on the field for most snaps and contributed significantly to Frank Gore's big day with his blocking on running plays.

TE Vernon Davis, Rec: 2 - 32 - 0 (6 targets)

Vernon Davis caught two early balls for 32 yards on Sunday and continues to have a role in the passing game.  Most importantly, Davis has been able to stay out of coach Mike Singletary's doghouse this season, which should allow for him to put up middle-of-the-road fantasy numbers at the tight end position all season long.  Davis had 6 targets in the passing game.
