Week 6 Game Recap: Kansas City Chiefs 14, Washington Redskins 6
Kansas City Chiefs
QB Matt Cassel, Pass: 17 - 32 - 186 - 0 TD / 0 INT, Rush: 6 - 16 - 0
Matt Cassel did not look bad against Washington as a passer, which is a double-edged sword. The fact that he completed over half his attempts and looked average is actually an improvement, but the other side of the argument is that this was the Redskins and Kansas City should have looked good or better against a struggling team. Cassel had just one pass completion over 20 yards, a 32-yard catch and run by Dwayne Bowe very late in the game where Bowe really helped him out on the play. Cassel does not have enough playmakers outside of Dwayne Bowe, who had well over half of the passing yards in Week 6. You should be able to do better for your fantasy quarterback, even in bye weeks.
RB Larry Johnson, Rush: 23 - 83 - 0, Rec: 3 - 12 - 0 (4 targets)
Larry Johnson looked arguably his best this season, running hard and finding space in the offensive line (and Redskin defense) for several yards before first contact. Johnson had his biggest run of the season (17 yards) and good burst to the hole and around the corner, but with so many lapses by his offensive line on other plays he still averaged under four yards a carry. Johnson is the feature back for Kansas City but he is no better than a fantasy RB2 and likely more of a flex starter -- but given the tough year for RBs in fantasy his value is higher than expected.
RB Jamaal Charles, Rush: 4 - 6 - 0, Rec: 1 - 2 - 0 (1 targets)
Jamaal Charles had only five touches (four carries) in Week 6 against Washington for a combined scant seven yards. Charles is no better than a handcuff to Larry Johnson and has no fantasy value with Johnson healthy and starting.
RB Mike Cox, Rush: 1 - 2 - 0
Mike Cox had one short carry of two yards in Week 6's contest against the Redskins. He has no fantasy value.
WR Dwayne Bowe, Rec: 6 - 109 - 0 (14 targets)
Dwayne Bowe was the top wideout once again for the Chiefs in Week 6, dominating the yardage, targets and catches for yet another week. Bowe had over 100 yards for the first time all year, thanks in part to his 32-yard catch and run late in the game to set up the final field goal for the Chiefs. Bowe had the three longest plays for the Chiefs (catches of 32, 20 and 18 yards) as he remains the dominant offensive force for Kansas City. If anyone else ever steps up as a secondary option, Bowe would be a more consistent fantasy value but right now he is the best Chief to own for fantasy purposes.
WR Bobby Wade, Rush: 1 - 3 - 0, Rec: 3 - 25 - 0 (4 targets)
Bobby Wade started for Kansas City and had three short catches for the Chiefs in Week 6 against Washington, highlighted by a modest 16-yard gain in the second quarter. As with any wideout not named Bowe, he has no fantasy value.
WR Mark Bradley, Rec: 2 - 22 - 0 (5 targets)
Mark Bradley started along with Bobby Wade in a three-wide set in Week 6, but it all went downhill from there. Bradley was targeted deep early (incomplete) and then grabbed two short balls for a combined 22 yards. Neither was that remarkable and his fantasy value can be characterized the same way -- minimal at best.
TE Sean Ryan, Rec: 1 - 11 - 0 (3 targets)
Sean Ryan started for the Chiefs in Week 6, catching two passes but with all of his yardage coming on his 11-yard grab in the fourth quarter. He also had a 12-yard catch but that was nullified by penalty.
TE Leonard Pope, Rec: 1 - 5 - 0 (2 targets)
Backup tight end Leonard Pope caught one short pass for five yards in Week 6 against the Redskins. Backup tight ends rarely have fantasy value, and in Kansas City this is certainly true -- do not bother with Pope.
Washington Redskins
QB Jason Campbell, Pass: 9 - 16 - 89 - 0 TD / 1 INT, Rush: 2 - 6 - 0
QB Jason Campbell played only one half against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 6, getting benched at halftime. This seemed a little odd, as Campbell was not the problem on offense, completing 60% of his passes before throwing a desperation toss to the end zone that was intercepted on the last play of the half. Head coach Jim Zorn is desperate to save his team and his job and get a victory, but this move was not a good one. Look for Campbell to start next week on Monday Night Football against Philadelphia.
QB Todd Collins, Pass: 6 - 14 - 75 - 0 TD / 0 INT, Rush: 1 - 0 - 0
Backup quarterback Todd Collins, a veteran player with little upside, stepped in for a benched Jason Campbell after halftime. Collins struggled aside from one very nice deep ball to Santana Moss early in the third quarter, but that strike accounted for 42 of his 75 yards. Collins connected only five passes after that pass, fumbled twice and was sacked for a safety in what should be a guest appearance before Campbell is back under center next week.
RB Clinton Portis, Rush: 15 - 109 - 0, Rec: 3 - 15 - 0 (4 targets)
Clinton Portis ran hard and with decent speed and power, but you would never have known it on most plays as the Redskins blocked poorly on rushing calls in Week 6. Portis broke a big 78-yard run that was his career best, but as with most things in Washington this season it was just short as Portis did not wind up in the end zone despite the big gain. Portis amassed only 21 yards on his 14 other tries as Kansas City bottled up the Redskin ground game. Expect even tougher matchups going forward so if you own Portis now might be a good time to "sell high".
RB Ladell Betts, Rush: 1 - 1 - 0, Rec: 2 - 11 - 0 (3 targets)
Ladell Betts had minimal contributions in Week 6, getting just three touches and eight total yards. With Clinton Portis dominating all of the workload, Betts has minimal value at best. It should be noted that Betts was supposed to see more action this season and if Jim Zorn gets fired, Betts may benefit and see more action.
WR Antwaan Randle El, Rec: 2 - 23 - 0 (4 targets)
Randle El started as the second wideout for the Redskins in Week 6, but he did little to help the offense. Randle El only had four targets against the Chiefs, all short tosses, but he did manage to snag one and break it for 17 yards for one of the longer plays of the day. Randle El also contributes as a kick returner, but both he and the Redskins are not doing enough to give him much fantasy value.
WR Santana Moss, Rec: 1 - 42 - 0 (4 targets)
Moss snagged a beautiful deep ball in the third quarter that was good for a 42-yard gain. That highlight was all she wrote for Moss' day, as he dropped a deep strike from Jason Campbell that would have added at least 35 more yards to his day and could easily have been a 59-yard touchdown. Moss is tough to start with Jason Campbell and the Redskins struggling, and now an angry Philadelphia Eagles team heading their way next week.
WR Devin Thomas, Rush: 1 - 2 - 0 (2 targets)
WR Devin Thomas had one carry for two yards on a reverse from Clinton Portis in the fourth quarter, but his biggest play came in the first quarter. Thomas was open enough to go deep for about a 50-yard pass play but caught the ball out of bounds and it was ruled an incompletion. Thomas is not doing enough consistently to be more than a third receiver for the Redskins, which has zero fantasy impact right now.
TE Chris Cooley, Rec: 5 - 57 - 0 (9 targets)
Cooley led all Redskins in Week 6 with the pass receiving trifecta -- most targets, catches and yards for Washington. Cooley snagged a five yard out late in the first quarter, broke two tackles and went up the sideline for a season best 25 yard gain for Cooley. Cooley added 32 more yards on four grabs, mostly over the middle, as he remains a strong fantasy tight end option for a Redskins team that has little else to offer as far as receivers after Santana Moss.
TE Fred Davis, Rec: 1 - 12 - 0 (1 targets)
Davis caught one short pass along the sideline for a first down, but that was all for his day. He has no fantasy value with Chris Cooley firmly entrenched as the starter.
